The lesson is supported by a weekly tab lesson bundle and can be found on PRS Guitars. The guitar solo is also covered in an electric guitar lesson, with an intro and guitar solo lesson. I am 70. I stopped playing guitar to raise kids for 35 years. Started again when I was 60. When I first looked at these two solos, I thought I could never learned them, but with some time and your “expert” lesson, I am getting it down……I am very happy. Thank you very much for the best lesson on Youtube by far.
I have loved this lead all my life (now 54) and always wanted to learn it. As you say, it’s all about the feel and you play and teach it so well. You have given me many hours of pleasure learning each lick, then slowly putting it together. I am truly grateful that people like you (and YouTube) for sharing your talent and allowing others to benefit. I may only be able to play a few songs, but I enjoy feeling as though I could one day play as cleanly and with such feeling as you do and the masters like Carlos. Many thanks!
I started getting into this song and realized how great a guitar player Carlos is……I have been away from guitar for a bit and just started taking lessons after a 15 year hiatus…my instructor is great and finally all these scales/modes are making sense…what happened 15 years ago is beyond me……at 72, I’m making progress ;-))Thanks for the article !
This is absolutely fantastic instruction and technique! Thank you so much for taking such care, patience and time to walk us all through the details of this awesome, iconic piece. I’ve been playing since 10 years old, now 56, and always love this song… and now (after much study of your excellent instruction), I can play it nearly flawlessly at speed. Thank you again for the investment of your time and skill on this. What a great feeling to play this now!! : )
The way you teach is so awesome. I appreciate how you stay true to the album. And the speed at which you go is perfect…I’ve learned so much from you. I trust you to show me the right way. I’ve seen others who show you their way. Can’t just trust anyone to show you how it’s really done. Many thanks….
Here’s the real deal. You are the ONLY guitar teacher that is actually playing each note and chord in exactly the right place. Note tones are dictated by what string the note is played on. You are the ONLY one who gets it right!!! That’s called LISTENING to the music. That’s what truly makes an instructor in this kind of teaching. Good Job!!!
Tremendous. I have to completely retool the way I’ve approached this for 20 years but it will be well worth it. Thanks so much for sharing. And you are so right about Carlos. He is not just a great player but a “stylist” and he communicates so well with economy. I true innovator and creator, in a league with Hendrix, EVH, Billy Gibbons. Abraxas is a true timeless masterpiece. I saw him 4-5 years ago at Foxwoods in CT and they killed. Started with a big band/percussive Latin fusion instrumental segment for about 20 minutes and then played the entire Abraxas album without interruption. 8000 people went absolutely nuts when he finished, sounded like a stadium full of 50000. His wife Cindy, who played drums with Lenny Kravitz for many years, sat in on a few numbers, and she can really hit ’em too!
Oh lord – nothing like realizing you played this iconic intro in the wrong position for 20 years. The opening G>F pulloff/trill, the D>E slide and the descending figure sound much better down where you play them around the 7th fret than up at the 12th where I did it – maybe I figured I was going to wind up there eventually. No one ever mentioned it. At 90 decibels maybe it didn’t matter. Great tone – nice control of your bends. Thanks!
Excellent!!! Thank you so much! There are so many “wanna bees” out there that are OK but you take instruction to another level. You know what you are talking about and teach in a way that is easily understood. I couldn’t agree more about “feeling”the music” and expression. Anyone can play notes, but you have to be able to “feel” what your playing to be great. Thanks again!
I love how you can duplicate the styles and tones of other guitarists. I play myself, although nowhere near your level. I’ve always appreciated true guitar-playing talent…..and you are definitely that, my friend! Keep up the good work, ’cause it’s a lot of fun perusal you play and show everyone how it’s done. Cheers!
I will say nothing, as every single thing i thought of saying ? has been said all ready., in your comments you are indeed Worthy, and in truth Due Sir, every single positive and nice thing that has been said..So I can say no more. I believe that expression is only truly possible when It is FELT. and the feeling encapsulates expression. Especially with Guitars/Music..Carlos himself is a very expressive guitarist, As are you, I end ith….You have been weighed, you have been measured and are most certainly NOT found wanting ..
thank you so much for sharing this short article ~ i now can play the solo with my guitar ~ feel so so great ! cant believe i can play this in my life…….this is my dream to play this song “black magic woman”(with intro n solo guitar) i learn this song almost 30 years since i was young..finally i did it..once again thanks so so so much…^^
Its a shame you didn’t do the Peter Green version. Maybe even compare and contrast the two. After all, most people aren’t even aware that this song was written by Green as a bluesy riff and played by Fleetwood Mac first. I love Santana and his version but Green was truly the creative one and should have been the one honored here! 😉
I haven’t done D Lydian but I know the mixolodyians and the the D pentatonic. This was an amazing lesson as I been trying to learn the second solo especially for 2 months and I just had to cave in. Oh well, learning the minor blues and diving deep into that I’ll eventually know how to play all blues songs just by feeling
You got that 100% right….fewer notes but all total feeling….and that’s what it’s all about….expression and feeling…an unbelievably great musician and song….his guitar work tells a story….about a black magic woman When you look at Santana, Gilmour, Blackmore….all unbelievably good guitarists but not truly recognised for their talent, accomplishments and contribution to some of the best music ever written recorded and heard…incredibly good…not thrash artists, but ARTISANS ….and that’s the difference
Thank you so much for these articles,, and for me not having to endure introductory speaches, you are are the best instructor in the whole of Utube! Thank you so much for our excellence, my friend! I am a better guitar player because of your quality teaching! You rock, please stay here and show me more, you are the best at this craft for sure, my friend!
You have good feel for this music. The ’75 Les Paul was $500.00 bucks straight out of the store then. Boy, it’s worth a lot more now, huh? Love the way it jus sits on your knee waiting for instructions. Anyway, you’re right about Santana’s expression. The solo sings like some great singer, say Judy Garland, who’s full of emotion and longing.
Yeah good article thanks for taking the time.Good base for perfecting the solo.I listen to the Santana track just to perfect the loose ends.I have one up on Carlos I can sing as well as play all the bits of this great song.Remember folks the earth is not a ball it’s as flat as some of the notes I play.
First of all, your youtube articles are far and above some of the best tutorials anywhere. Your patience and detailed explanations are simply amazing. You have over 70,000 thousand subscribers. We should all send him a dollar of month. That’s less than a cup of coffee a month for the best tutorials on the planet by some of the greastest song every written. He should be able to sit home and devote his time to more articles. 12 dollars over the course of a year is meaningless to us for all we get back. I am headed to paypal to give him 12.00 now. I challenge all of you to do the same. Let the man do what he does!
So, after wanting to learn how to play since I was in grade school, I finally started learning guitar at the age of 50. Your articles are easy to follow and your instruction is on point. Your talent and attention to detail is second to none! Thank you so much and Keep Rocking Brother!! p.s. I stumbled across another guy here on Y/T that goes by SHUT UP AND PLAY YOUR GUITAR……were you aware? Anyway, thanks for the great articles and keep them coming! New Subscriber here and I put the word out here in SoCal!!
maybe I’m just bad, but i couldn’t learn from this. it was like asking someone how to solve a rubiks cube and they say: “just get a cross going, do some F2L, oh look at that! you get an OLL skip, solve PLL and DONE!” . it really felt as tho you were teaching as if we already knew how to play the song(which i don’t). this was my first article of yours. maybe im just tone deaf too.
OK today I wasted about 8 hours of my life that I will never get back learning the wrong way to play this song! I was thinking well this sounds pretty good and then I clicked on this tutorial……… I felt like Charlie Brown getting the football yanked from me!! ARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH Man you are one accurate player!
Your transcriptions show a profound and sincere respect for the artists you cover. Every inflection is given the utmost attention. Thank you. That being said, please do a transcription of another of my faves, Jeff Beck. “Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers” would be my choice. Heck, you’d be giving a nod to As Roy Buchanon, Les Paul and Stevie Wonder at the same time! Please, give it some thought. You da man!
Man, being able to sit here and watch someone playing with Santana’s accent in slo-mo, is awesome. You really nail his sequential (oops, not “sequencial”, isn’t that special! 🙂 multi target descending chromatic bends and that steep bends with trill sitting on top. Have you done any tutorials on Trower’s Bridge Of Sighs? If not, could you? He’s got some trippy phrases that are too hypnotic for me to sync into. People should also note How Santana’s wrist snaps to attention on his vibrato on the ’71 article. He makes these conquistador licks into a martial art! It’s like sparks and fireworks flying!
G’day. Thanks heaps for your tutorials. Love your playing too. A quick question which keeps confusing me: You mentioned that this solo is mostly Dm pentatonic but also makes use of Dorian mode for some of the extra notes. Is it not actually Dm Aeolian mode? Which would mean that the relative major is F Major – which means the Gm is the IIm and the Am is the IIIm and the Dm is the VIm? Which would mean that all of the chords and notes fit the scale with the only exception being the color added by the major 3rd when the passage ends on the A major or A7? These modes are caving my head in!
this song is my lesson for this week. i’m using a 90 LPS with .010s through a 65 reissue black face. are you using a ibanez Tube Screamer TS808 to get the slight distortion? and my .010s the high E and B don’t seem to bend as freely as yours. for the E and B strings did you replace them with ones from a set of .09s?
Thank You, I am 63 and making a Tab for this, I want to play hoping using my Hands and Head will keep me Sharpe Minded . I have played, But Not picking up a guitar in 40 years makes you forget all the Songs you knew and recorded. If you have any tabs made, Please,be so kind to let me know [email protected]
This was the very last song I worked on by myself to surprise my guitar instructor! Sadly, things came up that made that lesson turned jam session my last lesson. Shortly after, my instructor moved away from the area, but that last session, and this song makes a very happy memory for me! Thanks Marty!
Wonderful job as usual. I have a different request. I’ve search all over the internet and can’t seem to find a good lesson on it so I’m asking please sir can you do a full lesson on “purple rain” by Prince. His death was such a loss to the world and you’re the only musician trust worthy enough to properly teach this lesson. This was the first song that ever made me wanna play guitar and I would be forever greatful if you can teach it to all of us. Thank you so much Mr.Marty
I have learned alot of different songs from you You are a kind person I just love you and Jake Reibart.Been taking lessons for Five yrs.I hope you continue to stay on line. Thanks a billion for having the heart and patience to explain everything slowly giving people a chance.♡Why do good guitars sharpen or flatten out?Stay safe Mr Marty.
Damn Marty, You are GOOD !!! You demonstrate everything and it seems so simple (but, of course it’s still a bit hard for me) but, I play it over and over until I catch on. I don’t get frustrated I just do it until I learn it and then move on to the next step ! You are MY favorite teacher and I cannot praise you enough !!!!! Thank you !!
Thank you so much Marty. The biggest challenge to me seems that i cannot get that much of sustain during the play. For example, for the pull-off + slide at 7:29, the slide is barely audible. The same situation for the 2 consecutive bending at 9:50, the sound got dissipated drastically after the 1st bend.
Hey, Marty! I layer it with more blues pent/harm min and add some lyd/mixolyd shred runs in Fmaj (rel maj), gives it that ‘uplift’ for awhile, very soulful and drop back to the Dmin running and riffs…don’t get me wrong, ‘Los still sounds great note-for-note…he’s great but we can all make it our own – also, listen to Pete Greenbaum’s original live versions from 68/69
Hi Marty i lean all my songs through you. But there is 1 thing i found hard. You show how to do the lead perfectly,. The only thing i find hard is trying to do the chords. You don’t break it down and show us how to do them for this song. I hope you re do this clip for black magic women. please consider this, because u inspire me to practice playing. This is on of my favourite song.
Howsit Marty, can you please recommend an all round electric guitar, I had a nice squire but sold it a while back, I have a few aquistic guitars but need the feel of an electric, telecaster or stratocaster preferred brand ect please. I would like to use it for songs from bon Jovi style up tp Bryan Adams and Ed Sheeran type of music. Please advise 😭🙏
I really appreciate your lessons. I continually watch and learn a lot. I relate to your teaching style and you are certainly a worthy music teacher. I would like to see your new material. I aspire to become a music teacher to children using a 3string CBG or Strum stick. well anyways back to Smooth lesson, with the gatar plugged-in!
Damn, Marty….my mouth was agape and fromacross the room my wife says “Who the hell is that??” right up until she heard your famous “HEEEEY MARTY HERE” and she says, “Yeah, only Marty can sound like a rock god and then go straight into being a regular goof.” Thanks for this. I’m learning it but that first lick after the bends is murdering me. It sounds like a cat being beaten with a baby when I play it. Quick question: I’ve got an MIM Strat and I don’t like the tone that much…what kind of pickups are you running on that?
Hey, Marty, great website! First, why didn’t you give Peter Green due credit for this great tune? Hahaha! Second, and more important, can you either add a few minutes to your song tutorials or do a separate series on tips for getting the tones for these great songs? Half of the draw of Carlos’ playing is his great tone. (Actually, Peter Green was a tonemeister, too!) Thanks.
Im sorry but im pretty high while trying to learn this and at 2:42 when he hits that note and does that hand movement it kills me everytimeeee and i keep making that same noise and cracking up. Marty do you also have singing classes? Im joking i love you thank you for literally making a tutorial and pretty much every song in the world you are literally the world of guitarist teacher everyone i know has a guitar knows you hahaha. Im not joking about the high part though
