The biggest frustration to me is auto cloud sync. These phones do not ask for your permission but just do it by default. When I got my phone, stuff was syncing to 3 different cloud services without my permission. I am all for cloud storage, but it should be OPT IN and not opt out. Remember, you have zero control over what Google, Samsung, Apple, Microsoft do with your private data.
Hey guys, I really appreciate this article. The biggest concern I have is “ask everytime” it makes me think, “WHY” do they need this permission and sometimes I don’t know. Therefore, I don’t really know if it’s good or bad in that moment (in order for me to make the right decision about it). For example, why would Facebook need my mic? Is it to “go live” on their site from your phone? I guess it would tell you this if you tried to go live without mic permission turned on- right? Some apps are more cryptic about why they need permissions than others (especially when installing it versus when you’re using the app use in the moment)- At this point I usually delete the app altogether or disable it (at the very least). Not every app is a must have or must use the way they make you think it is.

A question I had which wasn’t addressed is how concerned I should be about dire warnings (your phone may not work, etc.) if I remove permissions for core apps. For example, gmail, which I do not use (I check non-gmail email addresses in a 3rd party email app), and Google, which I have disabled on my home screen, and is not not the search engine in my primary browser (which is not Chrome – I do use Chrome occasionally as a secondary browser, and Google search still seems to work fine in it). It seems there is still a way to go in requiring Google to specify under what circumstances disabling such apps will – and won’t – impact an individual configuration, rather than being allowed to give these vague warnings. Unfortunately, my phone does not always seem to notify me when permissions need to be enabled – I have had apps that just didn’t work correctly for weeks before I discovered that I had disabled a necessary permission.

We are given the option to turn a lot of these settings off, BUT they still get access through other apps in the background, right? I have also done the .5 animations reductions in developer mode, and, although it makes things snappier, as soon as you close the developer mode, as is recommended by Samsung, the settings go right back to 1. I’m not sure why you guys characterized data usage in the background as a privacy issue. The app can still communicate when Wi-Fi is on, and it can still communicate whenever you open the app, even if Wi-Fi is off. so if it’s collecting data, then it has plenty of opportunity to send that data back to the mothership, regardless of this setting. this particular permission is all about conserving your mobile data and your battery, nothing to do with privacy.

Hello, I’ve been a subscriber for some time and am a subscriber. I own a few Samsung Galaxy Tablets and a I-phone 12 Ultra. I wish you would do a Android “what to disable” especially for tablets. Help getting rid of bloatware and bloatware system apps on a tablet would help as well. I have a Samsung “A” Lite SM-T290 8″ and a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite 10″. Both use Android and both DO NOT have a sim card or a slot for a sim card. So in these two versions a phone can not work period. YET, the tablets have all sorts of phone related apps installed, such as “Phone”and “Contacts” to name a few. There is no phone but these are running in the background using memory and storage space and they cannot be force stopped, disabled or uninstalled. The same applies to Bixby Home, Siri and many more. I’ve also found that in “permissions” Apps that have access to the Phone, “Contacts”and “Myfiles” plus others need phone access, cannot be denied and there is no phone? Can you possibly do a article to help all of us that use these devices and are stuck with useless apps and even more useless phone apps? I have two “Cleanup” 3rd party apps, ccleaner pro and AVG cleanup (paid). These apps try and force stop, disable, uninstall etc. and are always blocked from achieving that goal. I’ve watched many of your Android “help” articles most of the Android Phone menus aren’t in a tablet. I’m so glad I found your articles I’m not to good at knowing what to keep and what to remove on my phone. So I’m literally going to each app that is already pre installed on my phone and removing all permissions, turning off supported links, also turning off allow background data usage. I am even not allowing change system settings. One more not allowing any app to preinstall unknown apps . Mostly all the apps let me do it if I really need it then I will turn on what I feel I might need. For now I’m doing this because I have seen unknown apps being installed on my galaxy s21 ultra . I’ve tried removing it but it won’t let me my phone has been very laggy,, dropped calls or calls go straight to voice-mail which should not be happening with such a new phone. Please help!!! My wife for some stupid reason got my phone and chose Duck Go Go as my default browser. I enjoyed when the system was asking me which browser to use every time, because I could choose case by case to Use Chrome or Duck GO GO. On my Sony Xperia 5 II on the same page as “opt out of ads personalizatiion” there is a setting for “enable debug logging for ads”. Under that setting it states “instruct apps to write debugging information (such as network traffic) to the system log”. Do you have any idea what that may be? Hi can anyone please help me with my question I’m without service with my cellphone carrier because customer service mess up my sim card I need a Verification code number but since I don’t have service no text message go through the only way to get a verification code number is sent to my Gmail account but each time simple mobile sends me a verification code number to my Gmail account it never goes through and i don’t have them blocked they do send me some annoying ads like how my plan works or ads to buy a new phone but a Verification code number never goes through that’s weird to me. Didn’t you know our phones do not belong to us, they belong to Google, and Apple. You have any idea how many times I’ve disabled settings, told my phone or individual apps “You do not do this ever again! You leave this setting disabled!” Only for Google and Samsung’s software to defiantly turn them back on and tell me to get bent. My galaxy even alows 3rd party apps to change their settings back. Like the official NASA app refusing to leave it’s notifications disabled. They will never change. The courts have ruled the software is their intellectual property and they have the right to do pretty much anything they want against our will. In other words the law says It’s not really your phone. Just because you bought it doesn’t mean you have any right to control it. Even if settings stay disabled does that mean the apps and OS are actually obeying? How could I possibly trust they are when those function make them more money?

I only have the 2 options “allow” and “deny”, for example when choosing permission for camera by WhatsApp. – how do I even get to have the option ‘ask me every time’ ??? – If I’ll choose “deny”, does it mean that I won’t be able the share or get any pictures ?, or even worse, would it mean that if I would choose the “deny” option, would pictures that I shared or recieved so far would be deleted from my correspondence messages ??

I Did not want a A14 but I got upsaled by some greedy Cricket retailers who had no more free” phones. And I hate it! I want simple regular phone with Gmail bcuz I’m used to it. Looks like maybe you need another update to the article, mine is Android 11 (on a Moto G Stylus 5G) and is just not like what you show here, the names of things are different, the locations in submenus are in different places than what you show, and half of it I just cannot find, although I suspect they are just in different locations than what you show here.

I have an A32 5g. I was texting back and forth with my neighbor that live right beside me. Her messages the time stamp was 7 hours ahead of me. This morning at 1:30am messages were coming through all at once from different people. This is a major problem when my boss text and I receive it 2 damn days later. T mobile sucks

Very useful article much like the one a year or so ago. Missing option. “Opt out of Ads Personalization” is not there. I have the option to delete my advertisement ID or to reset it but not to opt out of personalization. There’s also a toggle for “Enable debug logging for ads”. So I deleted my advertising ID and all I can do is get a new advertising ID and when I do all of the options appear except the “Opt out of Ads Personalization” which is still absent.

Hello fellas, here is a hint for anything related to Google, do this on your desktop, log into your Gmail that you sign up for with android and go to the “Manage your Google Account”. Once you’re in, go to the various setting within and change the various setting here, this will also reflex the same setting you changed in Gmail onto the android devices, system-wide, this worked for me on Huawei Mate 9

Are the settings for each brand of phone that uses Android different? I had trouble following you along with you guys. Even when I did a search everything looked different. Now I’m an old guy so here’s where some empathy starts. I have a Google pixel 7 pro and perhaps I shouldn’t have it but I do. I have a real techie son but sometimes he’s just not available. But the settings on it are different and I could not find even with search the settings you were alluding to. The names were different. I think I found two. And Google likes to tell you that the world will end if you turn this off or on or whatever. So that’s my story. Help!

Irrespectively, it’s been indispensible in proving my whereabouts when questioned, or retracing my steps. When I caught covid two months ago, location history helped me pinpoint where.
