How To Use The Magic Mouse’S Middle Click?

BetterTouchTool is a tool that allows users to program responses to various gestures on the Magic Mouse, Trackpads, and other input devices. Middle is a single-purpose app for adding the middle click to macOS for Magic Mouse and Apple trackpads. Users can choose from a few gestures for different actions. Apple Magic Mouse 2 does not come with a middle button, so users can add MiddleClick-Sonoma to their Mac to enable middle-click functionality.

MiddleClick-Sonoma is a free utility that binds the middle-click to a simple three-finger tap. It also offers an option for Secondary click, which allows users to click or tap on the right side of Magic Mouse 2 to perform the Windows equivalent of a right-click.

When using a Magic Mouse or Apple trackpad, users can use gestures such as click, tap, and pinch to perform useful actions. However, there is no middle button on the Magic Mouse from Apple. To add a middle-click feature, users can go to System Preferences > Mouse and check all features.

There are several possible clicks on the Magic Mouse, including wide 2 finger middle click, two fingers spread by half of the mouse width, and any 3 finger click. To perform this behavior, users must use a third-party app that supports this feature.

In Safari, Firefox, and Chrome, clicking on a link using ⌘ + Left Mouse works like Middle Mouse (opens link in a new tab) and allows for a trackpad three-finger click to perform a middle-mouse-down click. This will keep the middle mouse button pressed as long as the user is still holding the middle mouse button.

  • Many thanks for this article and for the link to MagicPrefs. My old USB mouse died today and I shifted to the wireless magic mouse which came with my iMac. But I found the click very hard – like having to punch the mouse. After downloading MagicPrefs, I can now tap on the mouse which is much more enjoyable. Thanks again and greetings from France… :o)

  • Thanks for the vid, man. In a pinch, you can set-up Maya to work with a two-button mouse in the preferences. It’ll allow you to use Com + Option to drag but you’ll lose some shortcuts and it’s not ideal at all. You would think Apple would include more advanced options in the system preferences to compliment the Magic Mouse. I love using it, but it’s a bit boneheaded to charge $60-70 for a mouse and not have an option, built in, for a middle-mouse click.
