What do Christians believe about tarot cards?

Many Christians object to tarot cards due to their association with divination and fortune-telling. However, some are using them for self-directed spiritual contemplation. Gil Stafford, a retired Episcopal priest, incorporates tarot cards alongside the Enneagram and Myers-Briggs. Brittany Muller, author of The Contemplative Tarot: A Christian Guide to the Cards, uses tarot cards with the Book of Common Prayer for visio divina. Carl McColman offers an online course on Meditations on the Tarot, a classic Christian mysticism text with an afterword by Swiss theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar.

What kind of people read Tarot?

The tarot is a universal tool that can be read by anyone, regardless of age, profession, or background. It is not a tool that can be used in conjunction with other practices like spellcraft, astrology, crystal work, or divination. Instead, the tarot’s magic lies in its narrative power, which invites questions and self-reflection, empowering individuals to make their own decisions about their future.

The interplay between different cards can offer new perspectives, challenge old ways of thinking, or even force individuals to acknowledge hidden aspects of themselves. While the tarot can be helpful in making decisions and thinking about the future, it is not as effective as popular culture has led us to expect. The tarot’s narrative power allows for self-reflection and enables individuals to make their own decisions about their future.

In conclusion, the tarot is a universal tool that can be used by anyone, regardless of their background or profession.

What not to do with Tarot?

Reading Tarot cards can be a powerful tool for self-discovery, but it’s important to avoid making mistakes. Some common mistakes include pulling out the deck immediately after a challenging encounter, choosing the wrong spread, adding too many clarifiers, looking up too many card meanings, and reading about others’ feelings or motives. Additionally, doing multiple readings on a topic in one sitting can lead to frustration and confusion.

Tarot cards and other divination techniques won’t work if you aren’t in a clear state of mind. While it’s possible to read for yourself if you have a preferred outcome, it’s crucial to be in a neutral, calm space to accurately read for yourself. The worst time to do a Tarot reading is when you most want the answer, as this can lead to a more confusing and frustrating experience. Therefore, it’s essential to be in a neutral, calm space when reading for oneself.

What does Strength reversed love mean?

A reversed Strength tarot reading may indicate a small amount of codependency in a relationship, as insecurity can hinder independence and hobbies. It is crucial to build trust and establish a solid foundation of trust in the partnership. Force and strength may emerge in a reversed love reading, with one spouse becoming controlling rather than sympathetic. If you are single, a reading may reveal poor mate choices due to lack of self-control or unresolved self-esteem issues.

Bad relationships can negatively impact self-esteem, leading to a vicious cycle. To solve these problems, find inner strength and self-assurance, and recognize that you deserve better. In a reversed finance reading, avoid obsessive spending, as it may exacerbate your financial situation. Exercise caution when spending money, as you may feel insecure regardless of your current financial situation.

There is also a step-by-step outline.

Is tarot card reading true?

Is tarot card reading true?

Early French occultists claimed that tarot cards had esoteric links to ancient Egypt, the Kabbalah, Indic Tantra, or the I Ching. However, scholarly research reveals that tarot cards were invented in Italy in the early 15th century for playing games, and there is no evidence of significant use of them for divination until the late 18th century. The belief in the divinatory meaning of the cards is closely associated with a belief in their occult properties, which was propagated by prominent Protestant Christian clerics and Freemasons.

From its uptake as an instrument of divination in 18th-century France, the tarot went on to be used in hermeneutic, magical, mystical, semiotic, and psychological practices. It was used by Romani people when telling fortunes and as a Jungian psychological apparatus for tapping into “absolute knowledge in the unconscious”, a tool for archetypal analysis, and even a tool for facilitating the Jungian process of individuation.

Do tarot cards predict the future?

Tarot can help make big decisions, but it cannot predict the future. Michelle Tea suggests beginners start with a three-card reading from the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck. Growing up, her family often relied on tarot for tough decisions, such as discussing a brother’s breakup or deciding whether to drop out of school. The deck’s iconic Rider-Waite-Smith cards can be used to guide readers through these situations.

Do tarot cards go against the Bible?

The Bible warns against sorceries, divination, soothsaying, fortunetelling, mediums, and spiritists. Tarot cards can be used for divination and fortunetelling, but they can also be used for meditation or exploring archetypes. The modern Tarot began as tarocchi, sets of playing cards and learning devices, and fortunetelling was not involved. Early Biblical mentions against such practices include not eating pork, trimming beards, getting tattoos, cutting hair, eating oysters, going to church within 40 days of giving birth, working on the Sabbath, eating fat, touching a goat, or selling land permanently. Some scholars believe these rules were put in place to prevent women from having an active role in spiritual leadership.

In modern American churches, an attitude against astrology is common. Genesis 1:14 indicates that God’s people are meant to use heavenly bodies as signs, guides, and portents. The practice of astrology involves using stars as signs, as the three wise men used this practice to follow the Star in the East.

  • Yeah, because of the Tarot movie I just watched today. Although the movie was a bit off. I still was very curious about the crossover with astrology and tarot cards. Didn’t understand why that was considered something of not good or divination . I’m trying to figure this out because to me it’s the same but maybe there’s something that I’m missing. So I’m learning here now. Thank you.

  • As I’ve studied the houses and got more familiar with this spread, I’ve become absolutely fascinated and am having a lot of fun with it! I used it a couple of weeks ago for my step dad, his daughter has got a new boyfriend and several folks have said he’s bad news! He’s known to be abusive :/ So I turned over the 5th house for his daughter, the 11th house for the boyfriend (as its the 7th from the 5th), and the 12th to get a sense of his values. Then he mentioned he’s a drinker so then I turned over the 1st house to see how he drives at the moment (his 3rd house – short distance travel). I did another card too, I think it was the 7th house for his philosophy (9th from the 11th). I know that wasn’t the happiest example lol but just wanted to demonstrate what you can do with this spread once you get the hang of it for anyone who sees this who wants to delve deeper 🙂 I use this spread very often, depending on the question you ask before laying the cards, you can get so much out of it. Btw I love your articles, you helped me so much with learning back in lockdown <3

  • OK, I’m still learning. And again, I am here because i just watched the Tarot card movie. I was a bit confused because they made it seem like they were something weird about astrology and tarot cards being read together. I was a bit confused because the girl kept saying she’s reading their horoscopes. And I kept saying, how are you reading their horoscopes if you don’t have their birth chart, so I was kind of confused of what was going on . I was like, but how are you reading their zodiac sign through tarot cards without the verb charts🤔it didn’t sense to me. I was really confused lol some kind of professional lol. But now I understand . You clarified it thank you so much. 😊 good job now I get it. I got my birth chart out with all my planets and placements in my houses got my astrology book with the houses in it and I’m preparing everything and I totally get it.. and again this is why I like horoscopes, astrology, and tarot cards. I think they are a great significance to life and I learn a lot about my own self because I have been such a great thing for me. Thank you so much. You clarified what was going on in the movie Tarot, thank you.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾😄❤️

  • Hi! Thank you so much for the simple tutorial! Other instructions have been very confusing. I just have one question: is starting at the 9 o’clock position required? Every tutorial I’ve seen starts in that position and layout, but they never go into detail about why that is. Would starting the first card, Aries, in the 12 o’clock position for instance, change anything?
