Magic is a crucial skill in God of War: Ascension, available in the “abilities” section under “champion” in the multiplayer main menu. There are four types of magic to choose from, with each having unique properties and dealing massive damage, steal health, or freeze opponents. To activate magic, press the triangle button to activate your currently equipped weapon. To use magic, find a blue magic well and walk over it, which will give you 50 magic, denoted by the blue bar underneath your health bar.
Ice gives red orbs, electricity gives magic, and the other gives health. Use your magic to soften enemies’ magic orbs and weaken them for faster execution. After clearing all enemies, release the artifacts, which unlock special cheats like infinite magic. Each magic has unique properties and must be filled with the required amount before being triggered.
To use magic, press the R2 button and fill the second bar beneath the health bar with the required amount. For example, vaporizing an enemy using lightning will reward you with magic-restoring blue orbs, while the Soul of Hades and green health will reward you with magic-restoring blue orbs.
To use magic, build up your rage meter first and hit your enemy with the L3 + R3 button. Level 5 in each element is required for other spells. Fire is the only element that requires level 5 abilities.
To use magic, use the Amulet/Stone, followed by using your Magic twice in a row, then the Amulet/Stone combo. This will quickly reveal the magic attack.

In God of War, players can unlock the ability to fast travel by working through a few hours of the campaign. They can use a small rock from Brok to access Mystic Gateways, which appear as collapsed doorframes with an ethereal blue fog. To fast travel to these gateways, press the Circle button at one and the map will appear. Each region typically has at least one Mystic Gateway, making navigation easier.

Runic Attacks in God of War Ragnarok can be used by holding L1 and pressing R1 for a Light Runic Attack or L1 and pressing R2 for a Heavy Runic Attack. These attacks take time to recharge, and can be reduced by improving Kratos’ Cooldown stat. Players may select from three available enchantment options, each of which necessitates a distinct level of experience and lapis lazuli, with the result being an enchanted item.
How do you use enchantments in God of War?
God of War, a PlayStation exclusive game, features an emotional story set after Kratos, a man who left his homeland after killing the Greek pantheon, is killed by his son Atreus. The game follows Kratos and his son Atreus on a journey to spread the ashes of their loved one in her home realm. The game has been well-received for its emotional story, stunning visuals, stunning soundtrack, and compelling gameplay.
Unique enchantments, which are not unlocked by normal enchantments, can provide added benefits not unlocked by normal enchantments, as well as helpful stat boosts. Players can equip enchantments by pressing the Options button and going to the Armor tab. They can also remove enchantments to use on different armor pieces or swap them to experiment with builds at no additional cost.
How do you activate Kratos rage?
Spartan Rage is a powerful ability that can be activated by pressing the L3 and R3 buttons simultaneously, allowing Kratos or Atreus to enter an empowered state. Enraged Kratos’ fists appear on fire, his muscles and veins become more prominent, and his eyes emit a yellowish glow. He can also roar and see red. In God of War, the Rage meter drains over time and when damage is dealt or taken, depleting Rage instead of Health. Kratos can exit Rage at will by pressing L3 and R3 simultaneously, but the Rage meter must be fully charged before use.
Enraged Kratos can fight bare-handed, using swift, aggressive punches, haymakers, jump attacks, earth-shaking stomps, and massive boulders. He also recovers Health proportional to the damage he delivers to foes.
How to activate rage in gow ascension?
The Rage of the Gods Meter is a powerful weapon that can be activated by pressing L3 and R3 simultaneously. It grants Kratos increased power, greater damage, and unrestricted enemy attacks. The meter can be refilled by successfully fighting and defeating enemies. As Kratos levels up the Blades of Chaos, the Rage of the Gods gains new abilities and can only be activated when the meter is completely full. It cannot be turned off, so it must be used wisely.
In God of War: Ascension, the Rage of the Gods has a different mechanism. Instead of slowly charging, it fills the meter by hitting enemies, which is faster but loses charge quickly if Kratos stops fighting and killing enemies. Additionally, being hit by enemies makes the meter lose charge with each attack.
How to use magic in Ascension?
Magic is a unique power granted to a champion by their chosen god, and it is used in all multiplayer modes. It can be selected in the “abilities” section under “champion” in the multiplayer main menu. Four types of magic are available per god, each with unique properties such as massive damage, steal health, or freezing opponents. Magic is triggered by pressing the R2 button and requires filling the second bar beneath the health bar with the required amount.
Magic can be obtained by moving over blue fountains found in multiplayer maps or taking it from enemies. Some enemies, like Fire Talos and Wraiths, provide magic upon death. Each magic requires a “cost” that is the amount of magic required to trigger its use. There are three costs for magic: 50, 75, and 100. It is crucial to use the magic that suits your game play style and at advantageous times. Magic can be ranked up twice, unlocking new properties such as higher damage, new stats, duration, and reduced cost.

Redeemed Warriors are humans who align with gods like Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, and Ares, who grant their champions unique magics. These magics are element-based and have unique quirks, as seen in Kratos’ use of Fires, Lightning, Souls, and Ice. Kratos can give himself an indefinite magic supply by empowering himself with his rage. I love all the Elements this game has to offer equally. And I really think they are more than just “Color Change” of the blades. Here is my understanding of the game so far: Fire – > Tartarus rage is going to slam and bounce enemies. Its probably the only moveset of kratos that does that. > Rage Mode Fire Plumes very good for interrupts > Cyclone of Chaos is actually OP in this game. For a game that has few moves with interrupt potential. Cyclone of Chaos in this game is the most consistent way of crowd control. I was surprised that even stopped charging enemies, even bigger enemies dead on its track. And I think it has certain amount of invincibility frames laced on to it. Although you are not invincible throughout the attack. Lighting – > Great for Shock interrupting plumes. > Any plume stagger from other weapons can be quickly followed up with Lighting element L1+triangle (hold) for greater effect. Breaks through blocking enemies and pushed them away. > L1+square (electric projectile) great option for ranged combat and setup. > Coolest Rage mode, just makes kratos like a walking lighting tank Ice – > The Icy plumes are also a great option if you want to knock enemies away or send them flying. While all the other plumes (square mash, triangle finisher) have a staggering effect these send them flying > L1+ traingle, although it has too many startup frames but if you land it, it can stagger even heavy enemies or clear out bunch of small enemies ahead of you. Making it a great Stagger and Crowd Control option.
Combat of this game was so underrated. Sure it was a bit different from the old ones but doesn’t mean it was bad. The way you could chain all these elements, pick up weapons and the parry system, plus the graphics, it made the game really fun to play. Also the multiplayer was really fun and underrated, it was essentially like an arena hack & slash. You could make your own character and choose which God you wanted your champion to be of which is also what influences their attacks and magic (which Hades was the best imo) and had lots of different unlockable armors and there would be weapons you could pick up around the arena and also traps set. It involved quite a bit of strategy and skill, learning how to get good at the block and counter, and grapple and learning to use the environment to your advantage and figuring out when to use your magic.
Hot take, ascension has the best implementation of the blades combat in the entire series. The tethering mechanic made it feel like you had even more control over the blades than just whirling them around. It also helps that the sound design is the best imo too. I thought they would reintroduce the tethering mechanism back in Ragnarok which would make it equally as fun as the leviathan axe. (But the camera wouldn’t do it much justice but I think the tethering mechanic is the natural progression on top of just hacking and slashing)
I struggled with the combat of this game as to compared to gow3. It takes much more to master, but once you get the momentum of the weapons, you’re good to go. Only problem is its hard to get momentum when enemies start blocking everything or when you start doing a combo you’re immediately hit. Great combat, but takes much more mastery.
I really recommend perusal the “Taking an Axe to God of War Gameplay” GDC talk. The combat designers worked hard to make the close camera angle work, but it’s not even close to this combat. Action games don’t need expensive cinematics or storytelling especially if those will get in the way of good combat/action.
Okay I know it’s off topic but good lord you have written over 1k comments on your website. I do get it why but still damnn it’s my first time seeing someone with over 1k comments on a website. I gotta say though it’s really nice to see someone reply to most of the comments like that’s seriously really really nice. I guess this proves you are a nice person.
Hopefully some day they do a remaster of this like they did for the other games, because it’s the only one that doesn’t have one and it’s kinda jarring in that regard. It would also be cool to see more people go back to it as it’s the most underrated of the main console games. The combat is super good and the game overall played to a lot of the series strengths while being new in a lot of ways that didn’t feel disconnected from the first 3. Really cool game.
I honestly think Ascension got the bad response it did because people came off of the high of literally destroying the Greek Pantheon and were then thrust backwards in time and made to use the powers of said gods again. People went into it super skeptical and salty about that and as soon as a couple buttons worked differently, many people just already decided “it sucks.” So unfortunate, because the combat, level design and enemy variety were incredible- and the multiplayer was badass!
Ascension is a wonderful game! The combat system, with innovations and additions, is even more dynamic and allows for greater alternation of combat strategies! The graphics and soundtrack are impeccable, as usual. Its weak point is definitely the story, as we usually have great and engaging plots in the Kratos saga, while in Ascension, we have an average and unsatisfactory story.
Best combat in the series because of how easy it is to position yourself and your enemies at any given moment. The amount of set ups, mixes and different combos you could do is off the chain. Best combat of all games I’ve played so far are as follows! 1. Earth’s Special Forces 2. Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition 3. God Of War: Ascension 4. (PROTOTYPE) 5. Batman: Arkham Origins 6. Jet Li: Rise to Honor 7. Middle Earth: Shadow of War 8. Soul Calibur 4 9. Shinobi(PS2) 10. Armored Core: For Answer
I beat this game before playing Ragnarök on the Hard difficulty, and that alone was enough to almost get me to rage quit because of how hard some enemies can be especially the Trial of Archimedes towards the end as you are on this elevator like platform, but somehow I managed to best it through the sheer combat and skills offered in this game, which is quite a lot actually! Definitely enjoyed playing Ascension and it’s story for the first time and that too on the Hard mode! – TheBudaPower
I still don’t understand why they’re saying in social media that this game sucks, I mean the gameplay is really solid and satisfying to swing the blades of Chaos. and I Know that the multiplayer no one asked for and the marketing was centered around the multiplayer. I guess it’s human nature, even when you eat everyday your favorite food at some point you’ll don’t like it anymore. But the Reboot Games are not enjoyable for me, not as much as I enjoyed the older games
Ascension’s combat felt fresh and fun for its time, almost all of the greek GOWs played the same except for Ascension. This game was ambitious enough to make something different for the franchise back then and it was looked down by the fans as a sub-par entry. But then GOW came out trying exactly the same premise of being different and everyone thought it was the best of the franchise because it took influences from Dark Souls, BOTW and Last of Us. I’m not buying it bro, GOW gameplay and story was already rich and immersive, I see no need in underestimating the old games just because most people only played GOW III and the norse ark. I wish the greek saga got more love
I recently replayed gow 1-3 and played Ascension for the first time. Ascension might not be perfect, but it felt like a breath of fresh air because they tried to do something different, and I really welcomed that. The combat system was difficult to get into, and I couldn’t understand some creative decisions (which I don’t remember in particular) with regards to that, but it definitely didn’t suck. Maybe difficulties arise from it being similar to the previous games but not quite the same, and some players bot being able to forget the old system and to adapt to the changes. I also liked that the graphics didn’t look quite the same as in previous games. Tldr: Ascension might not be the best in the series, but it is not bad by any definition. Edit: great article by the way. It was nice to see what was possible in this game because I certainly wasn’t that good on my recent playthrough 😅
The combat in this game is quite balance at some move set. But I kind of dislike the new rage meter in this game – it required build damage (which appeared in God of War 4 and 5 as Frost or Burning build up instead using rage meter). If it had seperate meters from rage and build powered damage, it could be cooler for me
Ever since I watched Gow Ascension gameplay I wanted to play it,but Alas there is no way to play it except buying an old PS3, which won’t have any warranty. And Buying a PS5 means playing through PlayStation Plus premium which again not available for all regions and needs very high Internet Speed…..sheessh… Are they never going to make a remaster of Gow Ascension for new platforms??..
God of war 4 and Ragnarok combat make Ascensions look like a danm masterpiece. Ragnaroks is made only for 1 on 1 encounters which is why the bosses shine, whenever you have tk face anymore than 1 it turns into a shit show. If you don’t believe me, get this, the worst fight in the game is a boss fight where you have to deal with 3 of them at the same time and players universally agree that shit isn’t even play tested.
You attack those stupid 🐐 enemies and your blades of chaos and it does not even phase them…and they’re not even blocking your attacks, it’s as if the attacks never even register with them. I hate that so much dude Square Square, dodge Square triangle, magic attacks Triangle triangle, enemy is still coming at you and nothing phased them 🤨 Still a great game and story
The combat was not teller it was the weapons diversity, each game you gain new weapons like 1+…….this game is just the changes with different abilities so it seemed lazy on the creativity side of things…….with how crazy gow3 was this just couldn’t compare even the boss battles were trash…. just the opening prisonbreak and the boss battle to get to the oracle was hasn’t door awesome…… the rest felt like a dlc to gow3
I won’t say that the combat is bad but it wasn’t what the people expected like before you do most combos with the chains with triangle and square bottom and sometimes grapple enemies and if you want a change they add a weapon with it moveset which everyone liked and every game did the same with slight changes which I think is good and “”PERSONALLY”” like it more. What I hated in ascensions was the enemies always coming in the middle of my combo and attacking (that’s what enemies are for yes but those are annoying) they don’t get staggered expect at the start and they fly at you attacking and with the annoying Rage Meter I can’t get my blades stronger so I can beat the enemies they take sooooo long to kill. I see myself always just grapple back off and attack and repeat. Maybe I’m bad yes understandable but you can’t tell me those enemies aren’t annoying as hell and you can’t focus on anything they attack and attack and don’t care of u attack them they don’t get stunned or anything at all.
It was not the best of the God of War games but I was excited when it came out because it was another God of War game. Yes, some of the mechanics were not that great, but it was a NEW God of War game and I had fun with it, and really that’s all that counts, not reviews by some asshole somewhere or articles from some asshole somewhere.
ABURRIDISIMAS
Ascension shouldn’t have ever even been created. I don’t mean that in the sense that we couldn’t have had another God of War, but the story they chose to go along with it was stupid. This story was just fine being fragments of Kratos’ history sprinkled about, but why did they think it was a good idea to make a whole ass game out of it? It felt lazy, contrived and honestly just like a cash grab. Whether the combat was fun or not is irrelevant when this game just looks and feels like a slap in the face. NOW, if you’re going into this game naive to the story or giving absolutely no fucks about the franchise as a whole, then yea, it’s a great game and you’re gonna have a great time. I myself loath the existence of it though…along with the new God of Wars as well.
Now that I think of it the power of fire through out all the games of Gow always seemed to be better fuelled when kratos is in Rage or When he’s cooking the blades up you can usually hear sometimes even see him look at the blades while screaming at them & they get crazy hot like he’s focusing his infinite rage to charge them completely passed they’re regular boiling point or is it just me?
The only things I dislike about ascension are the parrying and the useless elements. The parrying in this game is a pain in the ass compared to the previous ones, very difficult to pull off. And I felt the other elements were kinda useless. Most of the game Ijust used the fire of ares and I felt no need of using the other elements
This game is why I think they nerfed tf out of the Blades in the Norse era. Hope they bring it back, especially considering Freya and Atreus won’t be around as much as the elemental sidearms. Heck, they could add the alt elements to both Draupnir and the Blades, if they really aren’t thinking of adding any more weapons beyond the axe, the blades, the spear and the anime sword.
Ascension screams “NEED REMAKE !!” so bad man . . . Imagine remake this, while also further polished the combat (pls add more enemies and removed that damn invincibility phase on the hammer golems), polished the story (maybe add Apollo since he’s so prominent, Artemis his sister, or maybe a separate campaign that adapt “The Warrior” graphic novel), polished the multiplayer as well (STEAM release maybe ?), and irons out some bugs and glitches (like how in 1 cutscene the Hecatoncheires name were blurred and changed to {{No Identification}} or something)
This part have more air time than any other part of gow that’s what I like about this some people say this is worst part of the series cause locations are very low and you doesn’t get any extra weapons and all those enchantment on his blades are non canon other than this game cinematic camera angles are fricking amazing
Combat in Ascension is not bad; the enemies are just too annoying, and there is no arena for testing. I would say Ascension combat system is nice but extremely flawed. Even though Kratos only has one weapon in this game, he can’t switch weapons mid-animation like in GOW 3. There is always a delay, which makes the experience not as nice as in GOW III or even II and I. The parry system is heavily butchered in Ascension; you have to make an extra input to parry, which, on theory, is not bad, but the execution is horrible. Once Kratos gets hit once while he is blocking, you cannot parry. (I try to spam L1+X as much as possible, but it doesn’t work at all.). Finally, enemies in this game are the pain in the ass; they all have horrible grabs that you need to spam button to get out, then just to get grabs like that again. Why do some enemies have a long and horrendous QTE? For example, in Gorgon, you need to spam Square and Triangle instead of one click like in earlier games. You can’t perform air grabs with a lot of enemies, which makes the experience even worse. Siren, Wrath, and Gorgon are some of the worst enemy designs I have seen in GOW. Finally, the game is quite short
