The Shield Charm, also known as the Shield Charm, is a powerful personal defense spell that shields the caster and bounces minor jinxes back to their caster. It is used to protect the spell caster with an invisible shield that can deflect a spell back at an attacker or weaken stronger spells. Protego can be used to protect individuals and can be used for a wider area and individuals within it.
In the movies, wizards are shown blocking spells by intercepting them with their wands themselves. This idea suggests that experienced swordsmen can quickly detect the beginnings of a particular move and prepare counters. However, there is no way to block the spell or counter-curse, as it can only be dodged. Harry Potter is the only known survivor of the Curse, having been able to use the yellow levitate spell to catch its tongue and combo it with a specific red spell to cut through it.
The Blocking spell is a non-canonical spell mentioned in The Family Clock, used by aurors to keep people from entering crime scenes during investigation. The Shield Charm is a useful tool for protecting the caster and preventing them from entering crime scenes. It can be used in various situations, such as blocking a large Expelliarmus or preventing Lord Voldemort from attacking.
In summary, the Shield Charm is a versatile and effective personal defense spell that can be used in various situations. It is particularly useful for protecting individuals and preventing them from entering crime scenes during investigations.
📹 How Did Dumbledore BLOCK Voldemort’s Avada Kedavra to Save Harry? – Harry Potter Explained
While battling inside of the ministry atrium in the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore saves Harry from a vicious casting of Avada …
📹 How Expelliarmus Beat Voldemort’s Avada Kedavra – Harry Potter Explained
Hey guys, In this video we’ll be discussing Harry & Voldemort’s final showdown in the Deathly Hallows where Harry ultimately …
In the book, Dumbledore clearly held an advantage over Voldemort during this fight and had him nearly incapacitated with the Water Orb until Harry decided to venture in to the fight scene and Dumbledore had to cast Harry back to safety which resulted in his lapse of concentration with the Water Orb that allowed Voldemort to free himself.
This scene was perfect in the book. Imagine how epic it would’ve been to see Dumbledore use a golden statue block Avada Kedavra?? Or when the Phoenix used her own body to block the killing curse to protect Dumbledore…would be too epic if this scene from the movie was more like what we got in the book
The CGI and choreography for the iconic fight scene in OotP between Dumbledore and Voldemort was outstanding. However, it needs to be viewed purely as entertainment and not canon. I didn’t like how they decided to use a priori incantatem type effect between the duelists. That was a special synergy reserved for the protagonist and antagonist.
Voldemort suffers the same kind of foils as most who are power-hungry. Like Palpatine, he was also a charismatic, educated person, but over time, they both became overconfident and convinced they knew everything they needed to. In Voldemort’s case, the secrets to undermining his plans were literally hidden in a children’s book, that most people were aware of, but he thought it was of no value and not worthy of his time.
I feel like anyone can block avada kedavra if they understood the concept of blocking with physical objects (and had the magical proficiency to move objects fast enough) but it seems like wizards are exceptionally short-sighted when it comes to practical solutions (which is the same reason why potion masters are uncommon and celebrated as well, since it’s not all about fancy magic)
there is also a thing in the book, that you missed, is that when you’re not powerful enough to kill someone with avada kedavra, the curse just ain’t gonna work, and the target simply won’t die. I think Moody says something like, someone could have a nose-bleeding as a result effect, or you might faint, when someone’s giving you the ‘kedavra, but you will surely survive. there is a thing like “magical power”, and if you are unexperienced, or young, or simply not strong enough, your kedavra won’t be powerful, and you can’t just easily one-shot kill someone. and as Voldemort says in one part of the book “you need to mean it” so even you are powerful as f*ck, if you don’t really mean to kill that exact person, and your head is not filled with murderous-killing-destroying thoughts, you WILL NOT kill the person. it has to be 100% intentional by you, you can’t just spray green lights everywhere like an idiot, that’d have no affect at all. (unless you’re Voldemort, and ur on a serious killing spree :P) there were also some examples like this in the books. (:
Excellent commentary. Keep in mind the dark lord uses his mystique and reputation as much as any other weapon. Confronted with Voldemort in person most witches and wizards would be terrified. One of the main reasons Voldemort hates Dumbledore so much I think is because Dumbledore knew Tom Riddle as an orphan boy, not a scary dark lord. Without his “street cred” Voldemort loses a lot of his potency. Dumbledore just wasn’t terrified of him, as a result he could better defend himself.
I love the fight scene in the movie, it’s so amazing and exciting. However, I prefer it in the books much more because of how one sided it was. You can tell how Dumbledore was Literally toying with Voldemort, the most feared dark wizard of his time, like he was nothing. I like it this way more because it shows you why Dumbledore is feared by Voldemort, and how powerful the elder wand actually is. In the movie I feel like Dumbledore lost, or at best it was a draw.
There is another way to defend youself against the kill in curse. Like all the forbidden curses, you need to concentrate your hatred and anger, otherwise the spell would have no effect. So if you cast a spell to make the other person feel happy and loved, then the killing curse would have no effect. Voldemort: “AAUVAADAAA K-” Dumbledore: “nasus reparatus” Voldemort: “I am so happy, I can not concentrate my hatred anymore.” Dumbledore: “Game Over, Tom.”
The more and more that I read and watch the Harry Potter movies, the more I feel JK Rowling could have written current Voldemort. She did a great job setting him up, leading up to his revival; however, once he was reborn, he really was a one-trick pony. He never did any magic that was notable really, you only hear of his feats before his revival, like creating the horocruxes, or possessing people as to cling onto life. Once he was reborn, just just reclaimed his past followers and threatened people with Avada Kedavra. It would have been nicer to see more dark arts performed by him like we’re seeing Gellert Grindelwald do.
I would submit that when Crouch-Moody stated his bit on the curse, he meant it for each of the students as if THEY were deflecting a blast directed at THEMSELVES, as would normally be the case. This is especially true given the nature of wizard combat being mainly based on dueling. The idea isn’t all to alien that another wizard, whom the curse was not directed at, could defend against it. The curse pierces all of the intended defender’s deflections because they are the target, but it would be useless against those of another’s. If a grounded solid object that even muggles can work with can deflect magic, then why not clothing, or armor? What’s the point of magic? But in the books, Dumbledore used magic to knock the gold, meaning it was under influence of some alternative magic power, giving it the ability. In the movie, it’s the raw energy itself, not of the intended target, that deflects Voldemort’s attack. I think it’s a matter of the target; whomever is selected cannot defend and must rely on allies.
I mean, I always assumed the killing curse could be easily blocked or deflected. Its a instant kill curse, but as long as it won’t hit you, its just a green lightshow and nothing more. It would be weird that in a world of nearly infinite magical possibilities, it would be impossible to create a countermeasure for this spell. Sure, back when Voldemort was at his prime, and the killing curse was considered something “new” then this was a problem. But a lot of time has passed between his “death” and “rebirth”, its only natural to assume the Ministry and other groups have spend large amounts of time and effort on examining the killing curse, and means to render it impotent. Dumbledore who always knew Voldemort would find a way to return, likely spend a large deal of his own time on finding countermeasures too, with relative success.
Another nice article! Not all witches and wizards are good with transfiguration so making objects leap in front of you on the spot can be difficult. Same with having fast reflexes if you’re terrified. Not to mention Voldemort never fought fairly with anyone (using dark magic, manipulation, fear and numbers).
Sadly, Fawkes shielded himself from killing Harry against one of those Avada Kedavra curses from Voldemort and swallowed the whole blast causing him to die and burst into flame. I was so relieved when he was born again from the ashes and Dumbledore picked him up and put him in his pocket. Poor Fawkes! And a very loyal pet companion literally willing to take a bullet for you.
Rewatching the series, super frustrated at the lack of duelling between wizards we see. Obviously there is a relative amount. However, I’m referring to a Dumbledore versus Voldermort duel with multiple incantations, blocks and creative spells being used rather then the killing curse and Disarm spell colliding. Would’ve been a lot more fun to see Harry have a real duel with Voldermort with creativity involved. Understandably, Harry’s not near the same level as Dumbledore but it would’ve been captivating to see Harry parry some of Voldermorts curses and strike back with some creative spells. After all he is meant to be one of the most powerful wizards of all time and probably edges in most peoples lists as the 10th most powerful wizard of all time
It kinda makes me think there are technically a few ways to avoid the killing curse. The three ways listed in the article, blocking with a large object, apparating away, or using a living thing as a sacrifice. Heck maybe even the avifors spell could be used if the killing curse is only a single target spell. If the killing curse can be block with physical object why not just continuously summon cobble stone blocks or something. Avada Kedavra is light based spell which makes me think maybe you could summon a mirror to reflect it back on the user.
What I would like to know is how exactly did Voldemort get his original wand back? If he lost his body in Godric’s Hollow, one would assume that his wand was left behind. Hagrid says that he rescued Harry from the house before the Ministry arrived, so if Voldemort’s wand had been left behind, why didn’t they take it? If it somehow had been left behind by the Ministry, how did Pettigrew get it?
In reality, I think the director just thought it’d be a cool visual. In canon, I think Dumbledore hit Voldemort’s spell with one of his own, creating an artificial, less potent version of the wand connection Priori Incantatum, instead of the natural version that happens between brother wands. He was flexing his enormous skill at precise aiming, and his knowledge of wandlore IMO. From what I can gather, Voldemort had more raw power than Dumbledore, and they cast at about the same speed, but Dumbledore had more knowledge and experience, which is why he always came out on top.
If I remember the books correctly, Harry blocked Avada Kedavra several times. In the Goblet of Fire in the cemetery he used expelliarmus to block Voldemort’s curse which resulted in the wands connecting and Priori Incantatem from Voldemort’s wand and in the Deathly Hallows when Harry was with Hagrid (in the motorcycle sidecar). Hedwig died blocking one curse, but Harry’s wand acted on its own to block Voldemort’s curse using Lucious’ wand.
I mean the elder wand alone would be enough. I mean that thing can fix other wands, I’m pretty sure it would be enough to block even that. That being said, Voldemort did not know about the elder wand existing so I’m betting that’s why Dumbledore didn’t just straight up block it cause Tom would have noticed that something is way off after that
You must also remember it possible for him to kill Harry anyway with him being relative(horcrux) and of the same blood(Goblet of Fire) Dumbledore answers this when Harry asked about his wand in their walk when Harry was “dead” that his wand recognized him and the strain would always remain until the one died.
I guess everyspell can be deflected … Remember how Grindelwald reacted to the spells in the Fantastic beasts .. he almost seemed unkillable as he deflected every spell casted by the ministry. I think it’s about the knowledge and experience how person becomes powerfull and strong ….. This is just my opinion.. Do reply respectively
So while you can’t block it, you can just dodge it or use something as a shield. Which raises a bit of a question in what you could use as armor against it, if the important element is whether it physically connects with your body or clothes. Magic has a lot of uncomfortable oversights if you probe too long.
A whirling of a cloak, it could mean he solidified his cloak fast enough and lifted it to block the killing curse. Absorbing its energy. Also to those who are confused about how Harry could block the killing curse, the owner of wand (The Elder Wand) cannot be used to kill it’s holder. Therefore, all of those attempts weren’t fully successful Killing Curses.
3:25. That moment when you use an image of Avada Kedavra being blocked by a spell, to illustrate the notion that Avada Kedavra cannot be blocked by a spell. In the book (Deathly Hallows, hardbound edition, page 733-734), during the final battle at Hogwarts, Harry uses Shield Charms to defend first Neville Longbottom, then Seamus Finnegan and Hannah Abbott, against death curses fired off by Voldemort. Later, on page 737, Harry casts Protego to save Molly Weasley from Voldemort. Finally, at the climactic moment, Harry uses Expelliarmus to block Voldemort’s Avada Kedavra, as shown in the scene from Goblet Of Fire, above. So, it’s alpha canon that Avada Kedavra can, in fact, be countered by spells. But more interestingly, it’s also alpha canon that Voldemort fears death, that he doesn’t fully understand it, that he created multiple horcruxes to cheat it, but that the spell to instantly inflict it was his creation. We get all of that from Dumbledore between Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows. So the question remains, does Avada Kedavra inflict true death? In Half-Blood Prince, Harry wins his vial of Felix Felicis by successfully brewing a potion called Draught of Living Death for Slughorn. The potion produces every outward appearance of being dead, without actually killing the taster. (One needn’t mix a complex potion to inflict real death. A few drops of hemlock in a glass of pumpkin juice will do. Or strychnine. Or bleach.) Lord One-trick Pony may very easily have crafted his signature curse to mimic the effects of the Living Death potion, because understanding an illusion is a lot less challenging than gaining a true understanding of the real thing.
The main reason Dumbledore bested Tom’s AK is, simply: Practice! Having spent time with Gellert AND Tom, Albus eventually learned the need to deflect the AK strategically rather than as one blunt force against another. (Wouldn’t it be ironic if Albus learned these defenses direct from Gellert himself…)
He says there’s no way to fend off the curse, as in it’s instant death once you’re hit by it. It’s never stated anywhere that it cannot be blocked or deflected, this may sound pedantic but I’ll give examples; other curses can be fended off, such as the curse on the ring that was slowly killing Dumbledore. Or removed like the cursed necklace that Draco used in the sixth book. So while some curses can be fended off, as in slowed down or reducing the effect of the curse, and some completely countered. The killing curse, has no way to counter it nor slow it’s effect, once it hits the target, they die, instantly.
Priori incantatem. The wand reversing effect/ Charm (its an effect when its done unintentionally during a duel, and a charm when done intentionally with the incantation). When spells from two wands collide a bubble of magical energy forms between them. Its then a battle of wills between the 2 participants to force the bubble into their opponents wand. When this happens the wand that receives the bubble will show the last successfully cast spells in reverse order. In the grave yard we were shown the souls voldemorts wand had reaped with the killing curse. This can also be achieved outside of a duel by touching the two wands together and intentionally casting the magic with the incantation Priori Incantato. In the books they determined that harry’s wand had produced the dark mark after the quidditch world cup by doing this. In the books its only wands with cores from the same magical animals that can do this during a duel. Warner Brothers Ruined this important piece of wizarding lore to make wizarding duels more dramatic and colorful.
Avada Kedavra is unblockable, unless you’re Dumbledore, then you can do whatever 👀😂. Seriously though, I bet someone as powerful as Dumbledore could find a way to magically counter that curse. It’s in no realm of your average wizard, but I have a feeling that Dumbledore could’ve really surprised us if that battle lasted longer.
Trying to make sense of magic in harry potter is so pointless, there was never any consistency or logic to it. He was still casting expelliarmus right up until the end, even using it to blast snape away in 3rd movie (its a fuken disarm not a KO spell). If hes not using that then he just shooting a random lightning beam and somehow having the same power output as the strongest magician in the world.
Well, Harry is protected by his mom’s spell, and as was explained, it’s much deeper and more complicated level of sorcery (btw. Voldemort never understood it). It can explain both why it countered the avada kedavra (using Dumbledore) and why they don’t teach it undergraduates at Hogwarts (moreover, it likely can’t be explicitly taught at all).
Before I even watch this im gonna state that the killing curse was blocked by several witches and wizards in the movies and they aren’t supposed to be able to do that. For example Bellatrix blocked Molly’s killing curse in deathly hallows with her wand and you see wizards doing finite incantatum on each other when someone fires the curse.. That was not the case in the books and idk why they did that in the movies . In the books you aren’t supposed to be able to block the curse with a spell ( in the book Dumbledore used physical objects to block the curse in his duel against voldemort) so I guess a offensive spell could work . But Finite incantatum was a unique situation for voldermort and Harry’s wand sharing the same core and thats why harry was able to beat it, and it was by complete accident so it makes no sense on why other wizards were doing that in the movies. Like they were doing it just like Harry x Voldermort and Dumbledore x voledemort. Dumbledore doing finite incantatum against voldemort makes zero sense either but I could see how the elder wand could pull it off considering it is the king of wands . If anything I think the long jets of lights used in this scene were used for cinematic purposes and ig its possible to block the killing curse like that, but the long jets of magic should’ve been kept for Harry and voldeemort ( infinite incantatum) amd dumbledore and voldemoer bc they can produce bigger versions of the spells simply bc of their prowess.
i think a lot have to do with the fear factor and how they react to beeing a mortal danger. some people just freezes completly and that is if not facing the most dangerous dark wizard in the country. there is other people that have faced him and survived encounters with him. exampels of that is both harrys and nebols parrents that either faced him 2 or three times and survived. (part of the prophecy)
I think people tend to forget because the movies did such a great job at building up Voldemort as a powerful villain they forgot that Dumbledore not only is so much more accomplished but Dumbledore is actually considered one of the top 5 most powerful wizards ever in all of the history of Harry Potter lore. Put some more respect on Dumbledores name.
Except Wand lore, of Harry Potter, states that through Prior incantato would also block it and remember Fawks is on more than one occasion infered to be the phoenix that gave his two feathers and only two feathers, making it impossible for Voldemort to hurt Harry with his own wand. Aside from that, the elder wand the wand presented to the eldest Peverell by Death, the from Deathly hallows would be strong enough to defend anything if Dumbledore wanted to.
I always figured it should be relatively easy to evade this curse. During a duel, people are generally able to react quick enough to a spell to throw up a counter or shield spell. Why, therefore, do their reflexes suddenly fail them when someone starts to shout one of the longest worded spells in the franchise? These are people who can teleport around, dodging a spell should be no problem. His overuse of the spell therefore could still make Voldemort a little tricker to deal with than others, but ultimately dodging his spells should be no different than dodging any others.
This duel is one of the best examples that Dumbledore is a lot more powerful than Tom. Dumbledore is over 100 years old during this duel and tom is less than half his age. At over 100 years old Dumbledore not only talks during the entire duel, but Tom doesn’t even have his entire focus he only has one eye on Tom and the other on Harry. Dumbledore also handicaps himself by not really trying to defeat him he’s just stalling and protecting Harry during the entire duel.
I am not sure Barty Crouch Jr was necessarily telling the truth either. Considering he was the defense against the dark arts instructor, and considering he knew the end goal, it would have been in their best interest to not teach how to defend against it. I am assuming it probably would be one of the harder curses to block, but not impossible.
A lot of the times they didn’t really see or have time to react, that’s the whole point, it’s a sneaky and deplorable way to kill someone, because it is so fast and easy. You would simply cast and before the wizard or muggle could think or do anything they were gone. If you really think about it, it just takes skill to build your reflexes to be fast enough to either dodge or (if you’re the greatest wizard of your era, like Albus) you can animate a statue to block the spell. Even the implications of casting protego would take so much skill and reaction speed to speak the spell and do the required hand movements to cast. All in all, it’s really not easy to “just dodge bro” the killing curse lmfaoo
No.. you don’t deflect it as it’s completely undeflectable and you can’t block it as it’s completely unblockable. You can’t use shield charms or protection spells against it as it’ll just pierce through. Though it can be countered by clashing it with another offensive spell just like harry was doing and it’s a battle between forces and wills.
Idk I’m kind of split on this and feel like it’s a plot hole in the movies because, Voldemort casts Avada kedavra against Harry in the goblet of fire in the graveyard and he deflects it with an expeliarmus spell… in the movies… and I feel like since you see a green beam come from Voldemort’s wand most of the time in the films, which avada kedavra is inherently green, he casts that a lot and yet again it seems like it gets deflected or blocked multiple times by Harry and Dumbledore
Why isn’t Avada Kedavra used flippantly? Because you need to 100% want to KILL the person you use it on … and that’s why you only really see a handful of people that use it, because you have to be that evil and corrupt to use it. Which is why even though Malfoy Needed to kill Dumbledore … even if he cast it, and it hit Dumbledore… it likely wouldn’t do Anything, because he says “I have to do this” … not “I want to do this” … Intent.
So if protego doesn’t work then how is it that he’s able to counter the killing curse. I just finished perusal fantastic beasts and I get he is the most powerful wizard. But In those movies vs grindelwald he didn’t have the elder wand and was still able to counter it. So the elder wand sure enhances your magic not that he really needs it. But how is it that he’s able to do that then if it’s supposed to only be blocked by objects
Everyone in here is hilarious, they did things in the movies just a little different from the books you can clearly see all of the class mates and the death eaters shooting green and red and blue lights at each other blocking everyone of them consistently and then you watch Harry blocking a bunch of green lights from Voldemort same thing when Dumbledore was blocking it in the fifth movie but the book clearly states That Dumbledore was throwing objects making things come to life and blocking Voldemorts Avada Kedavras etc. it’s not because Harry was the master of the elder wand, it’s not because his mom had a love spell over him, it’s not because their wands share the same core in this case lol. I will tell you though in deathly hallows part one when Voldemort used the killing curse on Harry at the beginning and Harry’s wand moved on its own when it was in Harry’s hand, that’s because he had a piece of Voldemort living inside of him repelling it back basically saying Voldemort don’t kill me I am you. And the goblet of fire When Voldemort used it against harry and it didn’t work it is because their wands shared the same core. People are right to theorize that when Voldemort used it on Dumbledore in the order of phoenix in the movie, Dumbledore was able to hold it off because he was wielding the elder wand. So I’m thinking it’s safe to say that the movies are just a little different from the books you know lol. I do totally understand the frustration of trying to figure this out though because Avada Kedavra cannot be blocked it states in the books.
No, the weird part isn’t that he blocked the spell: the weird part is that he would want to. The plan all along has been for Voldemort to strike down Harry and unintentionally kill off the Holcrux inside Harry. Harry would’ve survived it just as he did later, only if Dumbledore’s incompetence didn’t get in the way, it would’ve weakened Voldemort far earlier, and made getting rid of him all the easier.
I really think the wand were a factoreach time. Harrys wand and Voldemorts were twins. Priori incantation was the result each time they dualed. Whenn voldemort dialed against Dumbledore, Dumbledore was in possession and full control of the elder wand. When Voldemort had possession ofthe elder wand it’s allegiance was first with Draco then Harry, never with Voldemort who foolishly believed he had to kill Snape to win it.
Moody/Crouch in GoF: this curse is litterally unlockable Harry in the sme book: successfully blocks it with Expeliarmos (yes I know there ws some weird deus-ex machina wand core shenanigans, the point still stands that the curse gets blocked in the same book as its described as unblockable.) Almost like Rowling was writing a book for kids about magic or something….
The simple answer is that that spell isn’t Avada Kadavra. It’s a bluish hue. The killing curse is a deep green this spell Voldemort is using might work to kill but it’s not the killing curse. In the book whenever Voldemort did use the killing curse dumbldore had to pull something physical in the way to block it instead of using a spell
You’d think the old wizards, the ones who originally designed the spells that are now cast using verbal cues, would have left some simpler means of defending against the curse. I’d be really curious to know if there’s actual lore or even Rowling written history on how the Avada kedavra was created and the (surely) political battles that surrounded it. Assuming the ancients worked alongside one another in their efforts and actually had politics.
You forget though, the movies and books are separate canon. In the books the killing curse was said to be unblockable, but that was never said in the movie which showed several wizards using shield charms to block them like Harry, Ginny, Molly, and Bellatrix. Also, Dumbledore used a solid object as a shield or apparate away in the books, met it with his own spell in the movie.
How? Movies logic. Kloves and Yates know nothing about the 7 books. If you read them, you can understand that AK cant be blocked without an object like a material shield or something. Down in the comments here folks are offroad… 1) if Albus know how to block it, why didn’t he told to the members of the Order of Phoenix? 2) The elder wand does not make THAT much difference. If you are powerful, like Albus, you’ll be a little more, viceversa it can’t trasform you in a super wizard that denies any law of magic stated in the 7 books.
I always thought dumbledore deflected it because he has the elder wand, which is the most powerful wand known to mankind, abd therefore should be able to defeat and deflect any spell from a wand such as voldemort’s wand. But then i come to think about the fact that harry’s wand clearly beat the elder wand in the deathly hallows part 2 in his final duel between voldemort. Though harry is the true owner of the elder wand so i dont know.. tell me what you think about this…
I’m glad this scene exists. It shows how powerful and cunning Dumbledore was. Multiple attempts of the most scary spells for regular wizards knowing how powerful it is and showing no fear of it like the majority of wizards. An semi powerful wizard would maybe be able to avoid 1 -2 of them but if you get caught by surprise not ready you’re done for. Dumbledore was just way more advanced and was wise to the tricks he knew that Voldemort used that spell quite frequently. It’s easy and kind of lazy magic. It doesn’t show power or skill
This is all your opinion. And it doesn’t make much sense. In DH2, at the end when Harry is in the room of requirement and Draco shows up with goyle and the black guy…when Hermione and Ron show up and curses start getting tossed, goyle uses the Evada cadavra curse on Hermione but she blocks it using magic. I believe stupify. But I also don’t recall voldemort ever actually trying to use the killing curse on Harry in order of the Phoenix. When Dumbledore and voldemort are fighting, he just kept trying to hit Harry with sparks while fending off Dumbledore. I don’t recall him ever using EC
Most wizards and witches will simply give in to extreme fear after sighting Voldemort,I mean they can’t even say his name aloud, let alone think of duelling him.Dumbledore,on the other hand is a first rate wizard who is scare of nothing (except maybe of too much power entrusted onto him) and so he faces old voldy calmly and uses strategy more than magic.
I don’t think ordinary witches and wizards can stop Avadra Kedavra thats why its so effective. I think it takes really fast reflexes to dodge it and only powerful witches and wizards can move a large object fast enough to block it. If fighting an ordinary witch/wizard it makes sense to blast them with avedra Kedavra but if fighting someone powerful like Dumbledoor you have to be more creative.
So here’s the real wording behind the killing curse: “It’s unpreventable and unblockable” What you need to do, is enter a magical lock with someone else, like how Dumbledore and Harry do with Voldemort multiple times. Harry is able to defeat Voldemort by with his arcane duel with Voldemort and pushing his spell back unto him. So, the spell with go off no matter what you do, but it can be manipulated. Or the user can end the arcane duel like how Voldemort did and turn the energy into something else, like how he made a fire snake. So you can block it or stop it, but you can survive it. When Madeye says “only one person has been know to survive it” he means a direct impact with the spell.
There’s also the possibility that there’s no way to block Avada Kedavra *that we know of*. It’s entirely possible that extremely advanced magic users have found ways to block or deflect the spell, but that they are simply keeping it to themselves for personal defense, or that the method of defending from it is so advanced that a normal magic user wouldn’t be able to do it. Or it’s a possibility that Barty Crouch Jr. (Moody) is just an unreliable narrator. Or in other words, that he’s just lying to make the students more afraid.
The lamest thing about the Harry potter franchise is the ‘ aiming ‘. Like imagine being the most powerful wizard in forever and you can’t kill someone because you just MisSEd? Can’t they do a spell to never miss? Even this dependence on wands is a bit of a joke, ik they say some very powerful wizards can do magic without wands but that’s practically never
Let’s be honest, Dumbledore just used some lateral thinking and used physical objects as a weapon/shield. The books are surprisingly devoid of lateral thinking in weapons and defence technology. Like it would be very easy to conjure up some invisible poisonous gas around your enemy but wizards don’t know any chemistry. And it would be very easy to Apparate a few rocks into the sky above your enemy essentially creating a targeted meteor strike, but wizards don’t know any physics. Or fire an intense beam of light from your wand, i.e. a Lazer beam which a magic shield won’t stop unless it stops light itself which your enemy also cannot see through, this rendering him blind via his own defensive magic and you can do whatever you want to him while he can’t see
I really dislike the fact that we don’t see any power development in regards with Harry’s powers. He is being hunted by one of the most notorious dark wizards of all time and he has as his mentor on of the strongest wizards that the Harry Potter universe has ever seen and yet he manages to remain still in his magic knowledge, spell casting and magic power. He never uses advanced spells, magic or technics. The most advanced spells he uses are Expecto Patronum and Sectumsempra.
The movies are just so bad in terms of accuracy and diverge from the books in quite a lot of places. This fight was on a total other level in the books. Dumbledore single handedly took down all the Death Eaters the Order of the Phoenix was fighting, then fought Voldemort and kicked his ass, and restrained Belatrix as well while fighting Voldemort. One full chapter of full awesomeness, which is not named “The Only One He Ever Feared” for nothing, reduced to a mere few minutes fight in which he struggles and actually kinda looses in the movie…
That’s my problem with the way the Harry Potter saga was handled. Apparently only Dumbledore use his brain to exploit a little bit the magik system. Avada Kadavra is nothing more than a bullet while there seems to have tons of spells that can kill someone in a trickiest way. Why not transforming someone into a bug and then kill it ? Or transforming your opponant or a a part of its body into an object ? Or teleport an object inside someone’s body ? Suck in the air around him ? destroying the floor under him or the roof onto him ? Spraying poison (for which you have the antidote) ? Make appear hydrogen and cast fire on it ? etc. Even Wingardium Leviosa could kill someone if you use it properly. Wizard duel would be much more epic with this kind of use of canon magik, instead of the basic laserbeam vs laserbeam that lack of suspens.
I like voldemorts book death better than his movie death but both deaths leave a bit to be desired in a villains death. In the book we have an actual body but it felt like that could be faked out. In the movie he vanishes completly which felt more like a magic act to go hide but it felt like he could come back in the future. So my solution is voly shoulda just been captured then beheaded 😁
Honestly, why isn’t magical defense more common? Muggles have body armor that can block normally fatal attacks. It seems odd that wizards wouldn’t have developed similar, and even superior, passive defenses, like an enchanted cloak or some sort of talisman that just blocks or at least significantly reduces the effects of offensive spells. But I guess that “oversight” is what it takes to make the books and movies more suspenseful.
From fantastic beasts we get to know that credence is a Dumbledore hence the phoenix came to him. So as Grindelwald states that only credence can kill Albus Dumbledore that means he has got to be the most powerful wizard. Not just a wizard I believe the whole Dumbledore family members can wield obscurial powers which Grindelwald feared the most. Thats how Ariana lost her mind as well cause she was not able to get through her negative emotions.
If I had the time to block Voldemort’s AK I would try to use Serpensortia to block it. My reflexes are not amazing and I would be dead before I get the chance to block it anyway. Living creatures to take the curse seems to not blow the AK curse to explode in the surrounding environment. One could also use Avis to conjure some birds to take the hit. Using snakes on Voldemort might just be a dubble edged sward but it will insult him which will be worth it.
Having all wizards in trenches or behind corners only peeking around the corner to cast spells during the war just wouldnt have been very cinematic or fun to read, but that would be the way I would expect the military to adapt and teach such a fighting style, also… a shield would be very effective against avada kedavra in that case, block the killing curse with it and block any offensive spells meant to destroy the shield with protego, no?
The most BS thing in the Harry Potter is the fact the good guys use stupid shite like stupify and still win. Alright fine the kids might use it because they don’t know better spells, but the order of the pheonix using it aswell? Aurors? I mean come on, they walked into every battle basically bringing knives to a gun fight. If I’m in some magical civil war fight to the death against an armed insurgency, best believe I’m using every dirty trick and nasty spell in the book to win.
Assuming your in a battle with a wizard or witch and the intentions are to kill, I think if you dodged it, got outta the way, you’d be okay. In the 4th film, Harry turns his back on Voldemort. Voldemort goes: “don’t turn your back on me Harry…” at that moment, I think we might have seen the killing curse casted before we knew what it was. It was a green bolt of lightning and it nearly shattered the object that Voldemort casted it at, the scene in the graveyard in film 4.
the advantage Voldemort has is his reputation. people fear him and naturally assume that when they face him, they will just be killed. in the books and movies, he is incompetent. yea he has followers, but he keeps making obvious mistake to grown up and with people of real life experiences. its a kids series. And it shows when you try to break it down. you can see plot holes everywhere, just like goosebumps and scooby doo and the Hardy Boyz. but they are also for kids so enjoy them for what they are. great mystery stories where the good guys when. I love the books, enjoyed the movies. and I thought JK got it right Showing the consequences of war and fighting for whats right throughout this series.
Its easy to explain why you can deflect the killing curse. Voldemort and other in the line that used this spell, make others believe in there word of propaganda, that people do not even try block the curse, thats why Dumbledore can block it, he know better, therefor he can’t fail the same way as other.
I have a suggestion. I have a theory that not only lilly did protect harry, but also Snape. By making Voldemort promise him he won’t kill lilly but he killed her anyway. So the protection of lilly weakened him and the protection that lilly put on harry ended him. (Is it possible that Voldemort had an unbreakable vow with Snape?)
You could probably create a spell specifically to protect against it, and saying that makes me think that it’s basically just a plot device for when Rowling needs a character to die at the hands of a dark wizard or witch. There are spells that do some really out-there sh*t, and while none of the existing protective spells can block it, I’m sure someone could make one. It might have to sacrifice the ability to block other spells and require advanced knowledge and understanding of the mechanics of Avada Kedavra as to hone in specifically on it, since it seems to be designed to just slip through common protective spells.
Again they did it like this to make it more impactful in the movies. In the books dumbledore enchants the statues on the fountain, one attacks voldemort, one shields harry, one pins down bellatrix and rest run to warn ministry officials about voldemort’s presence. Dumbledore avoids getting hit by avada kedavra, by disapparating from the spot, fawkes twkes one hit for him, and for the third the statue that was supposed to attack voldemort takes the hit. He never matches avada kedavra with any spell. Just avoids it or blocks it using either somethjng physical or his phoenix.
Well if you are learning about harry potter world from movies, i am sorry for you. In the books dumbledore didn’t block the killing curse by any sort of spell. he simply avoided it by apparating and dissaparating and using the statues as a physical obstacle to protect himself from being killed. And also dumbledore didn’t even break sweat dueling voldemort in the ministry. In the movies dumbledore is portrayed much weaker old man with rising temper.
Because Dumbledore was one of few people who knew Voldemort from childhood and wasn’t afraid of him and He had the exceptional skill and most powerful wand still Fawkes had to jump in to save him. Voldemort was a very deadly powerful wizard. He went on to do experiments on his body except for the Horcrux, Dumbledore said once that Voldemort crusade for power he met the evilest and foulest wizards who had most darkest of magic knowledge. But Voldemort lacking remorse or empathy was able to go beyond to make himself unbeatable. All this experiment reflected on his skin some changes were hidden. there are theories like Voldemort improved his senses using some ancient charms well beyond the normal limit of the Wizards. He was able to go months without any sleep as he was super paranoid for his safety. He was able to live without food when he had his body, as he was capable to get the required nutrition directly from air or land. He had the ability to speak to snakes also he was able to possess animals that give him the taste of hightened physical ability and the Sensory ability of those predators. Now combine with those abilities Voldemort returned to the UK to gain power and he was formidable in beginning he had only his school friends followers but when he started to kill the most powerful witches and wizards with very gruesome but easy then people started fearing him his use of infery and Dementors added to his enigma and when people faced him they were so feared by his presence and history some got caught in like deer in headlights.
Well, I dont think taht other wizards didnt think f these tactics, but it is also said, that Voldemort likes to torture his opponents (physically and mentally) which could be even harder to evade. This sepecially would be the case for his mental torture, which we know from part 5, is very hard to fight of with occlumency.
THis is what to me makes avada kedavra a stupid spell cause if u think about the battle of hogwwarts pretty mutch everyone should have died cause if there is a spell you cant block and you are a death eater they would just throw that spell around all the time killing everything and everyone why bother dueling someone in a war when you can just insta kill them. Like the death eaters do they really care about unforgivable curses. Bellatrix would just commit genocide at hogwarts using her wand as an AK 47 (Avada Kedavra 47).
did barty crouch Jr know anything about the elder wand though? isn’t it supposed to be the most powerful wand in existence for its owner? if dumbledore owned the elder wand (which he did) one would assume the most powerful wand in existence would be able to fend off avada kedavra. And for some reason I doubt Barty Crouch Jr would be aware of it, or at the very least believe it himself, if this is true, this would explain why everyone is clueless about it, for both the students in that class, and most people irl. has anyone even considered the fact that Barty Crouch Jr might not have known about the elder wand, or believed the stories about it to be true? it wasn’t commonly believed in in-universe anyways, so this theory would make sense.
Dumbledore was wielding the Eldar Wand, with the Eldar wand you cant loose a duell, if you are his true master. Also i think that Grindelwald did not really loose to Dumbledore, when it came to Duelling, during their final battle, I rather think, that Dumbledore must have convinced Grindelwald during their battle, that Grindelwald was in the wrong, so that he surrendered to Dumbledore, which would explain why he could be captured, never tried to escape Nurmengrad and also felt remorse for his deeds during his entire time spent in Nurmengrad.
I kind of feel bad for Voldemort. He tried and tried and tried and failed to kill Harry all because of some form of shenanigans or another. First it was Lily’s protection that forced the spell to rebound, then it was accidentally making Harry a horcrux, and finally it was not knowing that the Elder wand served Harry.
Actually you are wrong. They explained it after the scene that when dumbledore died in the tower the one who disarmed him was not snape but malfoy. Thus voldemort’s kill on snape did not earn him power of the elder wand. Instead when Harry disarmed malfoy he unknowingly gained ownership of it and became its true master. That is why voldemort couldnt use the wand to its potential as the one who disarms/kills its master gains the ownership of it as its true master. What you said concerns a different issue regarding Harry’s immortality and is not relevant to the wand and its true master in any way.
Expelliarmus worked for Harry due to 2 reasons: 1. Before Deathly Hallows, he was a Horcrux and the part of Voldemort living inside him granted resistance against the killing curse, this is the real power that was released along with Expelliarmus in preventing Avada Kedavra from reaching him. 2. In their last duel, Harry is no longer a Horcrux, but he was the true master of the Elder Wand and the wand itself retracted power because it didn’t want to harm its master, again allowing Expelliarmus to defeat Avada Kedavra In the book, no one aside Harry actually uses Expelliarmus in attempt to counter Avada Kedavra (even Dumbledore) the common replacement was Protecto, a spell that raises a shield which can deflect smaller spells back to its caster, since it cannot deflect the killing curse, it serves as a single-use defensive barrier because the curse will destroy the shield upon impact In the movies there were so many instances where common wizards use Expelliarmus to fight Avada Kedavra which makes little sense because Expelliarmus is a very basic spell and that ruins the reputation of the Unforgivable Curses, making them suddenly so underwhelming
Harry Potter is the Rightful Owner of the Elder Wand, the wand never truly obeyed Voldemort. The casting of the Killing Curse, while yes powerful didnt function the same as if it would Voldemorts. Harry was his unintentional Horcrux, a Horcrux he destroyed by his own hand with the Killing Curse with the Elder Wand. Harry was the Master of Death at this point. In the HP world one that makes you Master of Death gives you untold power. (I could be wrong on this). The Wand recognized its owner disobeyed Voldemort in the final spell Harry disarms him with Expelliarmus the wand wanting to be with its owner rebounded and hit Voldemort with his own spell. The Elder Wand was a pseudo living being as Ollivander says “The wand chooses the Wizard”. It makes sense this way.
It’s just as simple as this. The Elder Wand were in the possession of Dumbledore. Draco disarmed Dumbledore before Snape killed Dumbledore. With this, Draco became the master of the Elder Wand. Then Harry disarmed Draco and thus became the master of it before Voldemort steal it from Dumbledore’s grave.
