Who is the boy in Magic Mike?
Magic Mike is a film directed by Steven Soderbergh, based on a screenplay by Reid Carolin. The screenplay is inspired by Channing Tatum’s experiences as a male stripper in Tampa, Florida, when he was 18 years old. Tatum wanted to capture the atmosphere and energy of his past as a male stripper but chose to create their own scenarios. The project was co-financed by Soderbergh and Tatum after getting fired from Moneyball.
In 2010, Tatum told an Australian newspaper that he wanted to make a movie about his experiences as a male stripper. After casting Tatum and Pettyfer in the lead roles, Carolin spent time revising the screenplay, writing the first draft in a month. Soderbergh suggested showing two points of view in the film: seeing through the eyes of young Adam and of his mentor Mike.
Dance numbers were choreographed by Alison Faulk, Christopher Peterson was in charge of costumes design, and Frankie Pine supervised the music. The dance sequence featured the ensemble for the first time together without The Kid, with spray glitter on umbrellas and raincoats for a wet effect. The Kid’s first strip did not purposely have any choreography, and it was Pettyfer’s idea to show his bottom.
The five-stripper group performed the song “Sound Off (The Duckworth Chant)” with lyric changes on the military-themed number. The scene during which Mike and Adam arrive at a sorority house dressed as cops was not in the original script but was Peterson’s idea. Music supervisor Pine initially planned to use Kid Rock’s “Cowboy” for the cowboy-themed number featuring The Kid, but Big and Rich’s “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” instead.
Tatum was given permission to freestyle for Mike’s last solo dance on the dubstep song “Calypso” by Excision and Datsik. McConaughey requested a stripping scene, which became the last dance number, during which he first sings “Ladies of Tampa” and then strips. The song was written in three hours by music supervisor Frankie Pine, Matthew McConaughey, and Martin Blasick, McConaughey’s guitar coach.

Tatum’s friend demanded a full month’s rent, which Pettyfer refused to pay.
Pettyfer later admitted that this was the wrong move and should have paid it. Tatum eventually stepped in to resolve the issue, sending Pettyfer a negative email, which Pettyfer responded negatively. Pettyfer denies the rumors that he is difficult to work with and claims the difficulty comes from the film’s promotion later because he hates the flying required for media appearances.

This was literally the most awkward and uncomfortable Graham Norton episode I have seen so far. Sadly enough it wasn’t even just Mickey Rourke’s very inappropriate behavior. I feel like most of the content here–i.e., the wrestling dress-up game, the “fat guy” story, the dogs and cats pictures, the prank call–almost everything felt really awkward and unfunny to me. Glad I’ve seen plenty of better episodes to make up for it.
I was here feeling abused and uncomfortable, I can’t imagine how Jessica felt having her personal space invaded constantly and the sexual remarks. Such an awkward show to watch. I don’t even know how Graham was able to keep control of the situation and lightened the mood with such density in the air. I bet both Jessica and Graham were glad once it was over. I would have snapped at him eventually. Mickey changed the way show typically feels and flows. It was a one man show for sure. This was so painful to watch and like grinding teeth. Graham carried this one on his back, what a host!
Anyone else notice that at 34:17 Jessica Biel looked really peeved off. I know that looks so well, it’s where you’re sitting there feeling angry, awkward and shocked all at the same and not being able to do anything about it because of where you are. Happened to me years ago at an ex’s parents house. His parents and his brother started this really bad racist rant about their new neighbours. This was my first time meeting them, and it happened during dinner. I just went silent and gave a fake smile now and again. Jessica’s also put a huge distance between herself and Mikey her body language is also being protective. She’s leaning forward in her chair in almost a part fetal position and she has her arms across her body. Feel for her… must have been really awkward sitting there after Mikey’s comments.
It’s a shame, because Mickey had some really insightful things to say about the industry and his own failings in the beginning. Jessica handled things with aplomb. Had they not been in a very unique situation, she probably would’ve told him to piss off. I cannot stand when a stranger (a man) decides out of nowhere to touch me at every opportunity. Irritating and presumptuous power move, drunk or no. Graham’s keeping-it-together skills en pointe as per.
This is just wonderful…he’s a great actor and I don’t know what’s wrong with people in these comments. …GN gets the most natural interview out of ANYONE – what do you want want? The saccharine schmaltz in the U.S. and Canadian shows? Scripted and arselicking? Love you Mickey !!!! and Graham!!!! (who is a neighbour of mine) Just a phenomenal show!!
I like that from the get go I felt Graham was letting Jessica know and he wasn’t laughing with Mickey, Graham’s face when he says ‘yep’ when Mickey talks about the pub where heavy hitters would go ‘pick up pussy’. When Mickey said ‘I’ve nothing in my house who looks like this’ – Graham comes across as your pal who’s with you when the creepy guy hits on you and you’re both cringing and laughing about how friggin awkward it is…the ‘here’s to big dogs, got my point?’, ‘I got it’ – Graham’s face! I think this shows why celebrities enjoy his show so much, he keeps it moving, he checks Jessica’s comfort level, he shows he doesn’t condone and join in Mickey’s behaviour or being creepy sexualising Jessica.
Man, so sad to see Rourke here. He’s trying really hard to be charming and back in the game, but when he recounts his past 15 years, it just comes off sad. It’s not a nice story. At all. How Jessica Biel looks at him – he just looks broken. You can just see that he is a troubled human being and it is unfortunately awkward to have him around when Norton of course is all cheery and his guests are exclusively people who have great and successful careers. you know – happy people. I wouldn’t blast Rourke like some commenters do here – there are a lot of people like this in the world. Troubled, who failed at one thing, or another. I’d actually say most people are like that.

I don’t think anything shown here was all that bad, except at the end with Martha, but there was clearly editing that happened and things before the show perhaps. Graham pulled Biel aside before she sat, then he made comments from the get go about chaperoning, when he went into the audience he checked on her, etc. Clearly he knew Rourke was drunk and had already crossed the line, would’ve been nice to get the full backstory though. The only thing Graham ever said about this was that Rourke got out of his car with a Jack Daniels bottle and that he kept smoking during the interview which was exhausting
I beg to differ on who the worst person on the show is. The scene where Graham is exploiting the largest man in the world who unfortunately had no choice in his life but they suffer probably large amount of pain being like that. Pretty disgusting really. Put Ur glasses on people and see the real picture.
Mickey did an interview and during that interview he discussed how his childhood was and how it has messed him up. He adored his dad but his mom left his dad taking him and his siblings away. She married another man who physically abused Mickey in the way of beating him. I’m not making excuses for him but his childhood was so bad he couldn’t continue to talk about it during the interview. Stuff that he had to endure as a kid can really messed him up. He never got to c his dad again. Heartbreaking
Now that I can see this episode I can see that there’s been huge progress in the show regardless of the human and empathetic values. As other people here mention, and just to summarize, the show is depressing. I’ve seen the most recent shows and they are far funnier within boundaries of respect that this episode clearly lacks.
Mickey was wasted, that’s the problem, when you’re the one drunk guy in a room full of sober people it’s pretty hard to judge the atmosphere, his jokes fell flat and because he was drunk he didn’t sense it, so he continued on, making everyone uncomfortable in the process, he’s still at fault though, he should never of gone on wasted
At the end did he say “I don’t mess with married women, if I haven’t met the guy”? That’s a statement right there…but in all honesty, this was cringeworthy but in my opinion you have two options. Play him at his own game, or tell him to stop. He doesn’t seem like he was able to pick up on the negative vibes without being directly told. So Jessica just sort of sitting there and moving away from him wasn’t enough, she needed to actively tell him not to do it. Obviously difficult on a chat show, probably,y not wanting to embarrass him. But Martha was able to do it in a very lighthearted, funny manner, that got the message across.
I read the comments, was preparing for cringe. I start to watch. Uuh okay.. this isn’t too bad, Mickey is talking about his struggles, Jessica talking about her movie…OH WTF why did you just say that Mickey?! What the hell is wrong with you?! That was basically the interview, Mickey Rourke just making bizarre remarks out of nowhere.
Wow! This was hard to watch.Out of all of his shows, this one made me cringe. Poor Jessica, she handled it well despite Mickey Rourke doing otherwise. Mickey Rourke was a jerk and he was creepy all through the show. Graham is such a pro, he diffused it by making jokes and keeping it light. I love this man, he is awesomely talented!!
I know its been said before, but what on earth did Mickey Rourke do to himself. He was so beautiful when he was younger. As for his creepy behaviour (and it was repulsive), I don’t think he’s any creepier than David Attenborough was with Jessica Chastain. But people have double standards: its OK for David Attenborough because he’s cool and an icon, but not for Mickey Rourke because he’s weird and a mess.
I love Graham Norton but one issue with his show is that he lets his guests get drunk backstage – and onstage – and some use it as an excuse to act badly. I still remember Mark Wahlberg showing up wasted, acting messy and belligerent, and being inappropriate with a female guest (can’t remember who it was.) It made for uncomfortable viewing sometimes. I feel bad for Jessica and Martha.
I had to look back and check. Granted, I’m a straight woman, but at the time of this appearance, Esquire’s sexiest woman alive was either a 33-year-old Charlize Theron or 42-year-old Halle Berry up against Jessica Biel at 25, which makes me wonder how the heck she got it for 2005 in the first place! It’s not just that Mickey Rourke keeps creeping toward her, there seem to be weird continuity breaks where he’s suddenly at the other end of the couch. Get the feeling there were some breaks with him told, “Back, buddy, back!”
mickey knows the game, he created a situation and used her as his co star, he got her, and played her reactions to a rock and roll type, he played the stereotype, to raise his ratings to still be relevant when directors are looking needle movers…mickey using the industry and their employees…well done mate
Shame it was during a time where she would’ve committed career suicide by just getting up and walking off. If she showed that she was upset all the dudebros esp in the industry would’ve blackballed her career for being “difficult” or some shit when she’s the one being made to feel sooo uncomfortable and gross. Lots of women had their careers cancelled for basically nothing because they didn’t want to be smiley doormats
Mickey Rourke rented my guitar teacher’s house when he was on tour and just let his dogs live there for months without cleaning anything and there was just shit everywhere everything was ruined. Mickey Rourke just does whatever the fuck he wants and wants to control everything. That’s why he put handcuffs on the host and brings a cane and start twirling it around and gets hammered and ask like an animal.
Ok, he was a mess. But he shouldn’t drink like that in public or next to any woman. But besides from that in a sober state I think is a genuine nice guy who was just insecure and needed validation about his looks . I think he is aware about how he aged here, but at the same acts like he is still young and hot. I get that Jessica is uncomfortable, but just give him a compliment and say you have a boyfriend. Graham Norton was keeping it light., but at one point they where like 2 mean girls laughing at him and mocking him on national television. I mean if you attack a man’s ego like that. He’s only gonna try harder girl! Just say something nice and go sit next to graham. Even though he was a bit rude. “Picking up pussy and shit.” that’s really inappropriate. You are in the company of a lady. I hope he never drank again after this. Omg I m so gonna make lemon water now. Jum. .
Man, it’s such a shame. I like Rourke as an actor and thought the chat with him at the beginning was really good, and while there was some awkward flirting with Jessica Biel, it didn’t seem to be out of line. The last half of it was crossing the line into straight up creep territory though (probably thanks to the drinks), and everyone is talking about Biel, but the way he was acting towards Martha Wainwright was just as bad, if not worse.
what a total trainwreck Mickey Rourke was on this episodes, absolutely disgusting that an old man kept making such crude comments to such a beautiful young actress. He should be banned from ever coming back and his movies should be avoided. And to think I actually liked this moron before I saw how this episode and his horrible antics. No respect for him at all anymore.
This was a great show, so entertaining, Mickey Rourke is the most incredible guy, nothing false about him, what you see is what you get, it was not awkward or cringe-worthy, the total opposite, he was the perfect gentleman and did not behave improperly in any way shape or form, Jessica did not look uncomfortable. Give credit where credit is due, that was a great show, Mickey was not even slightly drunk, it’s amazing what prejudiced eyes will see.
Everyones trashing Mickey Rourke.. But he’s just messing around.. You may find him creepy or cringey but he’s harmless.. if you notice when he was being real and telling his story everyone was listening (especially Jessica) whom was very professional and she’s all class.. this man is real and has been through real shit.. Have some fucking hope people.. It’s all you really have… He was a little weird with Jessica but really he’s a good guy.
Its not as awkward or weird as the people in the comment section make it out to be, Mickey was plainly drunk and perhaps felt a little less inhibited. Why are young people so fucking touchy these days? Haven’t they been around friends who have had one too many, plus Mickey has had a dark past and that clearly creeps up into his behaviour and mannerisms.
This entire show is built off sexual innuendos, so there’s that. Plus serving real drinks. Plus Graham still riffing on sex jokes even after some light awkwardness. Rourke was clearly snookered and veered into some douche territory but that’s about it. It wasn’t a proper pairing. He should’ve been on there with a different guest in the first place. Biel isn’t suited for this show. You need people to be loose and ready to have a good time. She was pretty uptight to begin with, and yeah he shouldn’t have touched her, but this was partly the fault of the producers. The guy is already half drunk, and you put him on there with a chick half his age. Mix hat with the style of the show, where Graham constantly invites sexual advances in his little playful way, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.
I only came to this article because I’d heard how ‘bad’ it was…!? Really not. Mickey Rourke was maybe a bit touchy feely but not that bad. The girls weren’t exactly down a dark alley with the bloke and I’m sure if they had been he would have been a gentleman..he was mostly just playing to the audience, his humour is just a bit out of date. Interviews on telly in the 80’s often had a pissed actor on who invariably flirted with the females on the show.. and? It’s a good job that the male stars of the golden age of Hollywood aren’t around today….they’d all be banned from EVERYTHING.
The amount of overwhelming nonsense in these comments are unreal Everyone is so holier than thou it’s hilarious Mickey was clearly tipsy, which is the partly the shows fault for having alcohol as one of its main points And Mickey wasn’t even doing anything crazy! If they truly had a problem I’m pretty sure they’re adult humans and can do or say something about it Man Mickey made advances at a hot girl, unreal isn’t it???? Who could of thunk of such a thing???? 🙄
