Oklahoma lawmakers have approved a bill to decriminalize low-level possession of psilocybin, the psychoactive component of magic mushrooms, and promote research into its therapeutic potential. Psilocybin is considered a Schedule I substance by the federal Controlled Substances Act, making it illegal in Oklahoma. However, magic mushroom spores are legal to purchase in the state, as they do not contain any psilocybin. House Bill 2107 would allow colleges and research facilities to study the effects of psilocybin on Oklahoma residents who struggle with mental health issues.
The psychedelic decriminalization train continues in the United States, with Oklahoma moving one step closer to passing a bill that would decriminalize psilocybin, the active ingredient in “magic mushrooms”. The actual drugs in question are psilocybin and psilocin, the psychoactive compound in mushrooms. Psilocybin is thought to disrupt negative emotions and is considered a non-traditional mental health treatment.
Oklahoma lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow medical researchers to look into psychedelics to treat mental illness. State Rep. Daniel Pae said more evidence has come to light that micro-dosing mushrooms in a physician’s office can help anxiety. If positive results are found, widespread decriminalization and legalization could occur in the coming years. The lowest law enforcement is currently in place. A bill to conduct a study on the benefits of psychedelic mushrooms, also known as “magic mushrooms”, has passed the Oklahoma House.
