📹 Lisa Miller, PhD On The Neuroscience Of Spirituality | Rich Roll Podcast
Recent research in neuroscience, genetics, and epidemiology now establishes that through spirituality our brains become more …
As a 12 year old kid in Quebec, i once got lost in the bush. I wandered for about 3 hrs and was becoming really scared, when I looked up and saw this dead stand with 1 branch still attached to it, pointing in a direction. In my mind a voice said follow that direction. Thirty min later, I came out of the bush in the exact same place I entered. Now I live in the bush full time with no guns. I have lots of friends now, but I need to focus more on developing friends that walk on two.
I’ve never left a comment here before but was totally compelled to before the episode was even finished, and saw a number of others all saying the same thing; that this talk is one of the best I’ve heard in a long time, & Lisa Miller’s work is super important.. especially as someone who’s clearly sought awakened awareness at that young adult stage, & dealt with multiple periods of suicidal despair. I’m looking forward to engaging further with her work once I do finish the episode 🙂 Thank you Rich & Lisa!
The exercise where you imagine yourself surrounded by love, guidance, and community is incredibly emotionally powerful. I felt an immediate sense of relief—that my problems were shrinking and that I knew exactly what I needed to do to be happy and fulfilled. Also, the idea that the heart should make big life decisions, while the head should figure out how to get there is such a beautiful and clarifying idea. That is, when we know what our higher self needs to be truly fulfilled and how we can make the biggest positive impact on other conscious beings, then we can devise clear, stepwise, logical plans of how to get there. I loved this episode and immediately bought Dr. Miller’s book. Thank you.
Rich, I think you nailed it when you mentioned spiritual trauma being problematic for many people within the context of 12 steps. I grew up with 10 others kids in a religious cult where we were all severely abused. Because all the forms of often very violent abuse were constantly and thoroughly justified through spiritual and religious dogma, it shouldn’t be surprising that the underlying premises of powerlessness and the unmanageability of our own lives in 12 steps could feel super disempowering and confusing for us. When I tried 12 steps as a last resort for my own struggle with addiction, the need for the admission of powerlessness to be the precursor to further healing felt a lot like another attempt to convince me that my suffering is not only my responsibility, but also my fault. I immediately knew that neither that premise nor identifying as an addict without also identifying fully as a child of God, was not helpful for me. That said, I feel extremely grateful to have also quickly recognized that the sense of connectedness to a loving community and the principles of total honesty and service embedded in 12 steps would be crucial takeaways for my own journey toward spiritual wholeness and sobriety. I’m not sure that everyone who develops addiction does so because of trauma. However, because SO many people who struggle with addiction and severe mental illness in their adult lives have developed them as a means to survive the psychological and spiritual devastation of abuse in childhood, it isn’t helpful to discount the unique problems that 12-steps’ modern methodology still presents for them—especially if they can benefit so much from many other spiritual principles of the program.
I take my hat off to this lady, who is actually attempting quite the difficult feat and seems to be succeeding at it too… What a wonderful and touching conversation, that makes a glimmer of hope rise up inside of me. Thanks Rich for bringing her on, cause this is maybe the major issue we face in our time. If we don’t deal with the spiritual barrenness we find ourselves in, the end of the line is death and suffering for many, many more humans and other living beings….
This was a great episode that I will listen to multiple times. That brief exercise felt very empowering in what feels like will be a long-lasting kind of way. It builds upon other recent influences and practices and suddenly I felt like I had broken through the surface of the water after being held under for a long time. I had been blaming this on anything other than myself but it turned out that it was my own beliefs that were holding my head underwater. It feels like a weight has been lifted.
This is one of the best podcasts I’ve heard in a long time. Incredibly inspiring in so many ways. As someone who wanted to be a scientist as a child but became disillusioned by science not recognizing those deeper feelings and knowings. This new era of understanding is synchronistically kindling my ambitions for both. Thank you so much for what you are doing.
Oh my goodness! when she tells the story of the person suffering from schizophrenia, I also asked a direct question of a dear one who was similarly diagnosed, at the age of 17, and he spoke directly and lucidly to me that yes, he does choose that other world we label schizophrenia because it made more sense than our shared world as it is. He was sober, clear, and answered me directly – this is the FIRST story I have heard from a doctor since that moment in 1997 that has validated that experience. Powerful opportunity to choose awakening from our trauma.
“Trauma is a catalyst for growth!” Indeed, as suffering often is for future opportunity and personal strength. Unfortunately it’s exaCtly what you say,…unless you were so very fortunate to have been shown/taught by example and communication in your family home or per unusual circumstances, you might feel very alone. This ephemeral truth of connection is within all of us when we ‘arrive’, it’s the true nature of our Being. Looking back on our lifetimes and others, we see over and over again, how challenges and suffering will guide you back to that if you listen and surrender to what you innately know to be true. Our minds can be an endless chatterbox of our fears and past failures, so loud that we miss the perfection of our daily breath, warmth of the sun, that we have a glass of water. I’m new to RR’s podcast, but the 3 I’ve listened to have been enlightening, and have passed along to family and friends. It used to be word of mouth, a letter or phonecall,…to share something special, but how generously wonderful to press ‘Forward’ and Send such news as this. It’s a stirring, awakening time. Feels like we’re on such a precipice of change, after a long hike uphill. I sense many people embracing compassion and unity. As a grandmother, I am grateful to be patient in learning this new tool of technology, attaining the ability to access the hearts and minds of those that care, and taking the time to help others. 🙏
During the exercise, Lisa asks to invite 5 people, living or otherwise, who are there for your greatest good. I can’t find 5, maybe 3 and they’ve all left this physical plain. I never really thought about that before. I feel blessed, but come short of my true potential. Peace and Blessings! ♥️♥️🙏🙏♥️♥️
I can teach a lot about spirituality in simple elementary language for everyone to understand. I’ve been reaching out for 5 years but no one will listen because I don’t have a degree or anything. All it would take is 5 minutes. Not a message.. not a article. An actual conversation. I’m saying this from the heart and with nothing but Love. I have a real message for humanity and find nobody that takes it seriously.
I just wanted to say thank you for this. As a 32 year old who is making a significant career change (vegan baker to software engineer) and beginning my journey to motherhood, I have been delving deep into what it truly meant and currently means to walk my path. I have a strong urge, like many, to reverse the generational trauma that has persisted for decades amongst both sides of my family and within myself. This has also come with pushing myself physically (bodybuilding) and expanding my spiritual life (left the Catholic Church when I was young). I’m so grateful for you all for putting this work out there. My day has already started to become a peaceful one because of this episode. Thank you.
This was your best podcast! Dr Miller is beautifully articulate! I have shared this link and will continue to do so! This has helped me to see things differently in my own experience, as well as, giving me a new perspective in helping my almost 20 year old out of everything Dr Miller described. Thank you!
I’m surprised by the hypocrisy and inconsistency in this podcast. How can one preach about spirituality, the awakened brain, and cultivating deep human connection whilst simultaneously supporting military practices… which essentially, is the antithesis of all these concepts? I think this discussion lacks intersectional awareness. Teaching the US Army that working on their spiritual core to develop spiritual readiness to help develop their grit and perseverance for military success is ridiculously inharmonious to me. Her yearning for love and connection does not seem to extend to those in countries that the US defines as enemies who need to be killed/destroyed.
While I enjoyed this podcast, I found it counterintuitive to speak about the pentagon and US military, knowing what these institutions are inherently responsible for, while speaking of deep connection, human love, and bonding…that is the “glue in the army family” (49:50). Well what about the other side then? If these qualities were indeed embodied, is there a need to have a military stuck in a cycle of endless war and perpetual “othering” in the first place? 🤔
The Buddha found the purpose to relieve suffering 2500 years ago. It’s not complicated but the business side of all this has to be in order to generate income and sell mumbo jumbo. Meditation daily will allow one to see our minds more clearly in order to realize compassion and kindness towards others and ourselves. Living in the now w/meditation is the key to peace and happiness. Buddhism is also science however unlike science it has ethics.
I appreciate the subject matter. It’s somewhat of a stretch to believe Dr. Miller doesn’t see the connection between the military, militarism, and climate change in the angst young adults are feeling about their future. The military has a problem rooting out extremists that may very well be hiding behind their religion/spirituality.
Maria Montessori was working on this before the word “cognition” was a thing. She was chronologically ahead of Piaget and Vygotsky. I wish more people would read her work The Absorbent Mind, which is precisely about the “spiritual child”, and take her pedagogy seriously. But this is an amazing synthesis of a broad range of ideas about conscious awareness. Thank you Dr. Good luck with your work!
Tremendously useful, dare I say a synchronous gift. My next book is the Awakened Brain and my own quest is to become a useful “trail angel” and to be alert to the voice and knowing of my heart as I progress along the way. I hope to meet you both in person at class down or upstream as the metaphor unfolds! Thank you both – well delivered!
I was deeply disturbed by this interview… here I feel is a deep manipulation of spirituality. Firstly she is not a pioneer, there are literally thousands of teachers all over the globe that teach the power of spirituality. She might be matching the ‘science’ or ‘scientific’ jargon to explain the biochemical process of an spiritual practice, but her work with the military lacks a profound understanding of the effects of violence on humans. In other words, what she is doing is what for thousands of years Churches, such as the Catholic Church, has been doing. Give their members an exclusive sense of wellbeing IF one is willing to belong to their particular group, that essentially lacks an understanding of what is known as UNIVERSAL love. Love for all sentients being, not only for those that belong to ‘your’ group. Dangerous jargon. It is elitist, and it excludes many.
I totally agree I wrote a spiritual book called ” Remember Who You Truly Are ..love unlimited ” from 40 years of observation on many levels . I was a teacher .I spent 20 years teaching tens of thousands of children to meditate I was blown away with what I saw Children who were adhd etc com0letely calm.again The smiles and just the energy in the room would calm down instantly, other teachers in the room who may have llaughed joined in Children l as young as 7 saing I taught this to my mother and brothers etc ..I did so much circle time with children ..Yes inner awareness is profound We have lost the connection lost the heart centre in society I used to see everyone hugging where I live connecting the heart energy, we need that back again..When we have children we nurture the heart of our chld instinctively.Depression is often the liver energy push down movement dancing singing ..etc are needed back..We thrive through heart connection.Wonderful interview I hope we listen to her and to ourselves we know what we need Be the light in a world full of madness and chaos and ripple it to your neighbour I have coached thousands of adults by connecting to the heart and my intuitive mind Wecare so much more when we realise we are not just data driven humans. We cannot switch off our living hearts Intuition is the highest form of intelligence love is the highest power unconditional love. Deep connection is the way we survived ancestrally. Not everything is modelling animals and nature do not thrive through logic they just know.
You can’t go back “and get your lover on the same spiritual path” UNLESS (s)he wants to. It’s not our job to wake other people up and it’s very hard to live together with a partner who is no longer a vibrational match. We’re not talking about a minor detail here. We’re talking about energy. Everything is energy. It’s not something you can cast aside with a shrug. I don’t think we’re meant to stay together with the same partner our entire life either. That might work for soulmates but not everyone is in a relationship with a soulmate. I’m not surprised she’s so in tune with birds. Birds are messenger and she’s one too.
Spirituality has a connection to a big happiness. Happy people are less hurtful. More friendly too. Now this world spirit, the short of spirituality, is the inter connectedness of the world. Lets put aside the connection to other living beings for a brief bit, you are uplifted by the non living beings too, we feel it some days more than others, there is one perfect breeze that feels so good, you feel the high of life. Life is a gift in that zone. One day you feel the benign warmth of the sun, you are in heightened awareness of the sun than on normal days, it is bliss you want to last. This spirit connection is real. Now living beings are inter connected too, most animals can honor humans, they can sense it when we mean no harm. Human to human spirit connection is fulfilling too. You go to a counsellor to talk and heal, but underneath that dialogue is a trust, each case discussed has no similarity, now if we have healed and wise elders we would be less likely to visit a therspist. These healed people have no formal approach, their spirit is resilient. One big spirit heals the troubled, it attracts the suffering and less fulfilled.
This is a masterpiece, Lisa Miller has captured the essence of our dilemma succinctly and now her message is ready to be delivered to the whole planet. If we as a species take on board what is being shared by Lisa Miller and Rich Roll to the world, then we will rise up and seize the day — everyday. This understanding can be a spark to reignite our hearts❤️🔥 and be a light for all of life. I was riveted by this wonderful exchange of ideas between these two radiant human beings…..Alhamdulillah 🙏🌏🌍
I smoked DMT once in nature and when I was coming out of it I heared what I thought was some people walking behind me. I stayed in meditative position for a few minutes longer and turned around to see what the people where doing, but to my suprise it was a group of ravens, about 20, mostly walking on the ground perusal me. DMT is something the body itself makes at certain times, like birth and death.
100 percent truth: I have been helped SO TREMENDOUSLY through counseling but more so cured of my depression with the sacraments and especially anointing of the sickbut 1st of all, Eucharist and confession. Jesus cures and sacraments are God reaching us physically through His servants. It works. Amen 🙏
When scientists get around to studying many things thousands of years old, people love to say that they have pioneered or discovered it. The way many people in the western world think is just so comical many times. It’s a good thing that some scientists are looking further into the subject though, that many people thousands of years before them did.
Thank you both for sharing this beautiful and loving conversation. I whole heartedly agree with everything Dr. Miller expresses here, and I am in the process of writing a children’s book to remind our little ones of their unique and inner guidance. It took me well into my 50’s to truly love myself, which happened once I became a student of quantum physics, law of attraction, epigenetics, and wanting to understand my spiritual connection. Now I see the world through the lens of love and compassion, and I no longer need another to behave a certain way…I love unconditionally and embrace everyone’s differences…and life has never been better. I long to share what I have learned, and am passionate in helping others connect to their innate inner guidance. Perhaps some of my articles can help others as they reawaken their inner voice. Thank you for spreading the love and opening up the world to the power of our heart, for the heart is how we express our true being.
So….how and by what means am I to ‘go back and bring my lover with me into higher levels of conscious spiritual living’? I don’t claim spiritual authority, but I see that he is still very asleep (childhood truame). I’ve tried, shared, shown, explained, asked, encouraged and waited. It would be nice to have a fulfilling marriage but apparently that’s not part of the plan in this life. So for now, I accept that we are on different paths in all areas of our lives……
I’ve re-listened to the week’s previous coaches’ corner and coming straight to this INCREDIBLE discussion from a PR Swim this morning after being back for only two weeks from a seven year swim break…. Rich you are changing my life sir. I appreciate you and your team so much for bringing guidance, vulnerability, and curiosity to your podcast that expands my own mind in your own growth with incredible people that challenge and fuel my own growth, again!! I am thanking life for answering my prayers of a solid bad-ass, male role model for this lad spearheading his path. Thank you Rich. Truly (of course this includes the team <3).
Deep bows Rich + Dr. Miler. This speaks the language of life (and of the heart) I understand. Been sober for 9 years and in a doctorate program in clincial psychology. My dissertation topic is : Death of Ego, Rebirth of Spirit : A Phenomenological Analysis of Psychic Pain giving Birth to a Spiritual Awakening
in the world I saw chaos, so I sought to turn it around but the world wasn’t working right, and so it spiraled down what was happening? I stopped, sat, and let it be the world was just fine, this chaos was in me I sought to help others, but it was me who suffered more from another who came, and left chaos at my door they too, tried their best, to foster my way through but at that time, I was fine, the world created me anew in the world I saw fury roar, but now I stayed quite still all the people needed, was a space for chaos to fill until it unwound and became clear again, I’d listen as it rose and slowly music formed itself, nature’s sound composed years passed before a friend requested my humble advice, she’d been confused at my reaction; our world was in strife we’d grown apart over new changes, so I decided to say goodbye so I said it clear, here’s my acceptance, and this is the reason why: “I love myself, so myself I keep; I love you too, so I set you free.” and with that, the day settled, and the world was within me.
Resonated with most of what Lisa was saying but as an ex paratrooper Vietnam bet i felt incredibly conflicted about her work with the military Having spent a lot of time in various ashrams trying to reconnect with being a whole human being. Being a soldier is a total antithesis to all that. How can we be conscious spiritual beings and pull the trigger on another human being. It is easy to have meaningful visualization excercises but what if you pull the trigger in real life.
Wow. I am perusal this now for the 3rd time, have sent it to a dozen friends and people I have met on the journey, and feel like this whole podcast and these 2 people are “trail guides” for us all…maybe not now for all of us as it is for me but everyone should tuck this away for those times when you need it most. I needed it most now and it has helped me in this transition phase (and thanks also Rich for your conversation with Chip Conley! Transitions!) more than I can describe. Amazing and thank you for this! Wow again.
What a beautifully life affirming, articulate, accessible, and real conversation this is. I’m perusal in small segments and will watch again, just to fully absorb the wisdom shared here. Dr. Miller, you are a wonder and a gift to the world, and Rich Roll, your voice as the interviewer is perfect in tone, question, and response. Thank you both for your work.
Love you interviews Rich, I don’t agree that a plant-based diet is for everyone I actually tried it in college and it did not work for me, and I work with many patients who need to eat some animal protein, yes we need to eat a lot of vegetables and that should be half our plate however there are many people who cannot survive on a plant-based diet. I cannot eat legumes or dairy or grains.
Science, spirituality and religion doesn’t need to be different realities. We need to stop believing in religious leaders, seek the truth independently, and find the balance between science and holy scriptures. None of God’s Messenger Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Mohammed, Baha’u’llah,… wanted us to make business of their Messages. They, all of them, wanted us to understand the meaning of The Oneness. Oneness of God, the oneness of religion and the Oneness of humanity. Religious leaders and their interpretation of scriptures their dogmas, rituals and ceremonies, their fanaticism did confused us, divide us and didn’t allow us to investigate the truth independently. They used and abused humanity, and still they do!
I just went through the practice at 35:30 to reawaken the spiritual brain. She seems to assume that a higher power is a person with the capability to love. Her assuming a higher power is a person and/or “loves” appears to be a carryover from deep religious or cultural indoctrination. As an atheist with a science degree in zoology, my higher power is nature. Nature is more powerful than I, but it doesn’t have the capability to love…it just exists. Although thrown a bit by her assumption, I’m very intrigued by this podcast and welcome it and will continue listening. Maybe I could substitute the word “love” with something else when applying it to my higher power, nature. “Energy” could be a possibility.
I am amazed to hear such incongruity on this show. To be expounding the universality of the awakened mind, the connection and preciousness of all life in the same breath that she describes an overwhelming understanding, comprehension and support from a military complex whose sole purpose is managing our young people to murder and possibly die in the name of capitalism. Incomprehensible. I am very disturbed by this interview.
Minute 28 to 30 or so —>> how one is protected against future depression once you get out of earlier tragic or a bad event. It’s like you are vaccinating yourself. Other topic: Dare I say — USA or west’s depression is a side-effect of “individuality or individualism”. A good thing taken too far? The human is made to interact and being in a community, serving the community!
Important book and wonderful discoveries worth knowing more about and studying (and living!). I just wonder why so many podcasters manage to turn interviewing an important guest into discussing their own personal opinions&journeys rather than letting the expert speak about their area of expertise. Nothing against the interviewer’s life-experience but why not get someone else to interview himself and, while interviewing one’s guest: let the guest speak and answer the questions in full (as that’s who we wanted to hear from in the first place anyway).
I had been wandering alone in the assumption that Spiritualty, or my EXPERIENCE as it relates to it, was delusional. This idea almost always met with dismissive and maladaptive diagnostic feedback (prescriptions, DSM marked psychological defects, alienation, gossip, on so the list goes); and was invalidating and lonely. What I couldn’t articulate verbally, my deepest sense of wholistic survival knew. Science, the method and Spirituality, the 6th sense I guess you could maybe call it are not infinitely separate, but linear, rather they overlap and intertwine. Is real! My life’s highest belief isn’t worthless nor is it delusional!💫 This podcast probably did, rephrase that; DID save my life. Suicide or some terminal end was at most 6 months away (to my core I could sense it coming). What indescribable prophets you BOTH are to all living beings! I celebrate you, your passions and your time on earth. A legacy of deep understanding of oneself in relation to all things living has been interrupted by human ego. It’s been tragic and far too lengthy. THIS is a MOVEMENT and I think millions, if not billions of people feel in tune with it. Thank you endlessly! 🩵🪻🫧🪶🪳⏳🗝️♾️
Is it just me or did they not even mention Psychedelics? 🤷🏻♂️ When used with intention in the right Set & Setting Psychedelics are the most Effective & Efficient tools for experiencing and knowing God/Source and one’s true inherent self, which is Love. It’s not enough to just Believe, we need to FEEL it and KNOW it via Direct Experiences 💖
Quantum Integral Transformation (QIT) major cornerstone is the eternal integration of Science and Spirituality, the marriage of science and spirituality. This is the Yin (Spirituality) Yang (Science); the Principle (Yin) – Process (Yang) eternal inseparable relationship of Eastern thought, the two complementary forces that make up all aspects and phenomena of life. Yin is a symbol of earth, femaleness, darkness, passivity, and absorption. … Yang is conceived of as heaven, maleness, light, activity, and penetration. Western thought, which took its origin from Eastern thought, taught us otherwise. It taught us the separation consciousness, that matter and spirit, God and creation are separate from each other. The principle of Yin and Yang is that all things exist as inseparable and contradictory opposites, for example, female-male, dark-light and old-young. … The principle dates from the 3rd century BCE or even earlier and is a fundamental concept in Chinese philosophy, Chinese medicine, and culture in general.
People aren’t buying it anymore. Many souls have awakened. We are discovering again that we live in a deeply sacred and mysterious environment full of coincidences and synchronistic encounters that are no accidents, but destined for souls who believe in soul evolution. As more of us awaken to this sacred mystery, this is now an opportunity to create a completely new world — individually and collectively — to redefine the YoUniverse and Life as energetic, sacred and realizing we live in a world where everything is connected. We can not longer think in terms of us and them when it comes to the consequences of the way we live. Today it’s all about “WE.” No more them or I, just we, a “consciousness of responsibility for the whole.” We’re not buying the official explanation of everything. Many now mistrust the media, their politicians, the government after so many years of deception and manipulation. The genie’s out of the bottle, and it’s not going back. From this perspective, we can see that humans have always felt insecure and disconnected from this sacred Source, and have tried to take energy by dominating each other. This unwanted struggle is responsible for all human conflict. It is time to help each other collectively and/or by a one-on-one mentoring and coaching psycho-spiritually to awaken sleeping souls from their manipulated ignorance — ignorant of one’s ignorance. Our current situation – calls for a new paradigm, a new vision subsuming our old assumptions and values.
The topic of alchemical spirituality. Jesus Christ and his body ; representing the human skull as it relates to facial recognition, eye lock, voice control and robotics in general. People have historically been paying homage to the house of robot for over two millennia. #Hoping They Fail #Conquistadors & Spaceships #Europeans & small spaces #Africans and wide open places #Asians & Americans #looking and listening #CHEAP TALK Y’ALL
So many things to say about her little stories: ¿Qué ruido hace un león para dejarte saber que te va a devorar? What a craziness! For sure she makes her big bucks this way.
The old paradigm (eg., newtonian theory) simply said in layman’s language is: “To See Is To Believe”. Examples of paradigm shifts are the movement of scientific theory from the Ptolemaic system (the earth at the centre of the universe) to the Copernican system (the sun at the centre of the universe), and the movement from Newtonian physics to the theory of relativity and to quantum physics. A paradigm shift is a major change in how people think and get things done that upends and replaces a prior paradigm. A paradigm shift can result after the accumulation of anomalies or evidence that challenges the status quo, or due to some revolutionary innovation or discovery. The concept was first formalized by physicist and philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn. He characterized a paradigm shift as a revolution that challenges and ultimately takes the place of a prevailing scientific framework. These challenges arise when the dominant paradigm, under which normally accepted science operates, is found to be incompatible or insufficient with new data or findings, facilitating the adoption of a revised or completely new theory or paradigm. The new paradigm is: “Believe Now, See Later”. For collaborators and members of Integral Transformation Group (ITG-TheGroup), transformation is, literally, a forming over, a restructuring, a re-engineering. By transformation we speak of the transformation of people — specifically the transformation of one’s consciousness. You are keenly aware that you have awareness.
I’m afraid to trust my synchronicity. Because twice in my life i was following synchronicities, and it got me into deeper trouble. Nothing got solved in my life. My problems just got worse. In my experience synchronicities are nothing but reflections of our subconscious. Like if we’re mad… Every now and then anger of some sort pop up in our lives. In my case… I was trying to decide on something… Then the next day, i see a book titled “make your move” i took it as a sign. So i made my move… It made my problem bigger and eventually ruined my marriage. So now, i am really confused. Decision making freezes me…
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS. THANK-YOU LISA MILLER and RICH ROLL. This is spot on, clear, comprehensive, inclusive, inspiring, and ABSOLUTELY necessary. Love can be taught. Everyone gets it/has it/is IT. I KNOW. I had the opportunity to prove it in a giant human lab for over a decade (Wise Practice: Affective Education in the Inner City). Discipline referrals dropped. Test scores rose. One Friday afternoon a guest observed my class. He was a policeman who had spent weeks traveling the country looking for solutions in regards to the ‘over representation of the young African Male Population in our prison system. He observed at when my class ended, he said to me, “I was really upset when the took God out of schools but when I walked in hear today, I felt God.” People love love, especially our young. And when they are taught simple skills of mutual support, respect, and connection, they flourish… they KNOW and they grow strong and happy. Our culture squelches spirit out of us. ‘Ugly’ behavior has become normalized to the point of common acceptance. It broke my heart so I chose to live in another country and culture that supports and aligns with my belief….where LOVE guides the day and a way of life. And I have had a front row seat of suffering to the ravages of addiction, depression, and anxiety. Pervasive. Pandemic levels. It’s time for folks to step up, wake up, and BE NICE.
Also, Rich, as a friend whom you’ve not yet met (but thank you for including my laughter on your “Prophets” episode!), it seemed to me you were not quite settled on the question of psychedelic assisted psychotherapy, from the perspective of one who chooses to be sober. I would be interested in having this conversation with you, personally, should you wish to consider another perspective, and experience (from one who also finds tremendous value in sobriety). I have many thoughts on the subject, for sure. 🙏🏼❤️✨🐾
Hopefully this one has over ten million views in under a year too. Edit: Andrew hubermans “how to hack your behavior” episode should of earned my sub, but here it is😁 This one should be “how to hack your life” lol Ive been spiritual my whole life, After a seven year heroin addiction, i was blessed with rehab and quit in 2015. My father passed days after i entered rehab, I dont know if i would be here if not for that, because it made me really stick to my recovery aswell as awakened me a step more. My sobriety lasted a couple years before falling into alcoholism, and cocaine. My spirit guide, who was alive then, helped me quit those as i picked up meth. She took her own life june sixth twenty twenty. Just under a year prior, i had an experience where i was told by …ill say by angels, “that she has to leave” ….i told her we had to leave the state soon, and told her about my experience. She chose not to leave.Since my spiritual awakening happened 7monrhs prior to her death, it was the strangest, worst experience of my life. Ill say our subconscious pretty much always knows whats coming. Anyway, i am blessed enough to have quit meth almost a year ago. if i dont stay connected, ill be right back out there. Its crazy cuz like…..experiencing spiritually simply put, is being connected to who we are, before physical means. Which is probly why ive quit seeing “religious” as a real thing, for me atleast, i do see that it is a door. More like a metaphorical mask. Its just brainwashing in the way AA is lol.
Robot spirituality. Most things humans gained are steadily and readily sacrificed for the progress and the process of artificial intelligence and thus strange thing I wake up to each day; virtual reality. I’d love to abstain from this ridiculous sounding sacrifice to the robotic God of mathematics. Namaste your heart out
after smooshing a tiny ant( I was taking a bath and didn’t want it’s company) a selfish move, i realize. suddenly, a cavalcade of fellow ants came out through the same crack in the shower fitting, picked up their fallen, gathered around and (i swear) made a sound in unison comparable to the mourning of women long ago. i was sober, and mentally well. it was unreal. Loved the cockroach story!! 😱😉
My kids are/were poorly behaved to their hardworking parents. They were given a choice between family for now and for later and the outside world for the immediate present as it looks good going forward. The whole positive presence of parenthood simply washed away as it rightly should. Parenthood is not a lifelong exercise. This is how parents fail. They simply fail to release their children into young adulthood. Thereby dooming themselves.
I wish it was called developing the right brain. Instead of spirituality, its not spirituality, because otherwise people in the middle east would be full of bliss, thats not the way to help. Nepal that has a way of teaching their children with developing the right brain . They are a very happy country. Spirituality, might work for some people but all people have a suppresed right brain
Hi, I have a guest request for your website – The purpose of your show and the content you aspire to create suggests that he will be able to add great value to your audience. It would be so exciting to see you have a deeper conversation with him. Please let me know how can I reach you to share his details 🙏🏼
What about the food chain. I have chickens and I protect them from the foxes and I’ve seen cows surround geese that had wandered into their pasture and destroy them to protect their calves. The birds will pick the calves eyes out to make them defensiveness. Their motherly instinct but so brutal. And then I see baby bees learning to explore and all is right again. Nature is amazing
This was a great talk, but it begs the question, the awakened brain, or the awareness and consciousness that we are spiritual beings, how does this relates or integrates, into what the army stands for which is often fighting corrupt wars, were the soldiers aren’t necessarily just protecting our freedoms, but also perhaps the main agenda of creating a war machine for profit How can you cultivate spirituality in your soldiers, perhaps one class and then in another class show them the most effective way to kill your fellow human beings ?
I like the concept of spirituality being discussed because it represents phenomena that haven’t been studied, however I don’t like anthropomorphism, I get that she is describing her experiences but I hope that the theme here isn’t about how we shut ourselves of from our capacity to communicate with nature as in animals I don’t like this idea because it assumes that the human proclivity to infer other peoples mental states from our own as primary among other organism when we have no direct way of knowing that.

A commercial came on at the third breath, ug. People in the military learn to deal with mind shifts to be able to function in the military and this is one of the reasons it is difficult to blend back into the civilian world. Many do on the surface but among their tribe it is well known. They also have higher risks to social ills (addiction, abuse, assault) and suicide. Thank you for this and all you do on your website.
She says that there is no problem turning the lens of science on spirituality, and I think that that’s somewhat overstated or dishonest. We have no scientific way of accessing people’s internal experiences. We have to rely on their self-reports (which are highly problematic for a whole host of reasons including, bias, issues surrounding memory, reactivity, demand characteristics, priming, unconscious processing, etc.), imaging (which are highly problematic because PET, fMRI, EEG, etc. are not as reliable as people intuitively think they are—they depend on correlations between behaviour and activity which are much lower than people assume), or other biological measures (heart rate, skin conductivity, cortisol, etc., all of which suffer the same issues regarding reliability). Using an experimental design to study something like spirituality is obvious limited (don’t confuse an experiment with a study—they’re not the same thing), and studying spirituality in the wild is obviously made difficult by a mountain of confounds. That’s not to say that progress can’t be made, but it is to say that science on spirituality will always have a giant asterisk attached to it.
I can’t think of anyone that has my best interest in mind. Even from my past. I get solace from being out in nature. Lack of nurturing in my childhood. Sorry Lisa but I find it hard work listening to you. Can’t explain except that so much of your phrasing is unfamiliar or maybe familiar but annoying. Thank you for devoting study to this but please, could you make it less wordy for us non-intellectuals.
This is nothing but eye opening for me. Truely an inspirational conversation. But I’m confused, she is there as a neuroscientist, but most of what she says seems to be her personal experience. Like for example the statement of all animals being part of the same field, does she have MRI scannings of animals as well? Rich starts out with saying that spirituality is anecdotal, but with science we have a method of looking more systematic on whatever topic. Most of this conversation is purely anecdotes, very confusing..
While I started perusal this, three birds outside my window started singing “woo-woo, woo-woo”. 😊 Seriously though, I tried to have an open mind and listen. A few of my thoughts: 1.\tRich asked the good question at the beginning regarding the difference between spirituality and religion. I wish he would have also asked the other question: What is the difference between spirituality and emotional/mental well-being and the practices of psychology and psychiatry? Also, for me spirituality implies a spirir and I would have liked to hear what her definition of “spirir” is. 2.\tI am always uncomfortable with the degree that these kinds of things can be used to manipulate (“brainwash”) people. Some of this thinking and the techniques employed start to border on brainwashing techniques. The fact that Dr. Miller is having success selling this to corporations and the military makes me doubly sensitive to this danger. I have little doubt that there are a lot of people looking for this kind of thing. That makes me even more careful. 3.\tOverall, it came across to me as too ambiguous with too much invented language. I see Deepak Chopra wrote a positive blurb for her book and when I saw it I thought “Yes, a lot of what she says sounds very Chopra-ish (and not in a good way) “.
Count to ten that helps.I have raised seven kids with my mom and covid she never saw thank god but if she got trough the war waited six yes for my I can get through this too….my.mom always kept busy cooked homade foods.natural xutmres helped me with my asta said she truely believed I could become.e anything I set my mind too. I wanted to be a Dr or a lawyer if I had the most bey I would like to be a Dr.mom was the most spiritual person I knew.FYI on India the head is considered a sacred place. Abd I’m not talking below the waist.
The literature of 12 step programs have taught all of this for eighty years. Unfortunately the stigma of addiction and the intellectualization of spirituality has distorted the beauty of this life saving program. Recovering from addiction is acknowledging the trauma and pain of life, its causes and conditions, and building a daily practice, with a support system, that empowers the individual. I loved that ‘the opposite of suppression is expression.’ These simple jewels are the treasures. I hope no-one is offended if I say, from my heart, may the God of your understanding bless you all and bring you to your inner peace.
If this woman was a black or a Latino person she would be unemployed and probably she would be in a 24-hour locked up supervised facility under close monitoring! I cannot imagine this woman taking the MMPI personality questionnaire! Her results suggesting mental illness would be off the charts! The tale about the cockroach pausing before it left the classroom and lifting its body as if saying goodbye to the students in the class who didn’t kill it is silly and weird! There are psychiatric patients in psychiatric facilities in the USA whose reaction to “Dr. Miller’s claims” about a cockroach saying good bye to the group as “weird shit”!
At 18:20 Lisa started talking about how children do (statistically) when there is a strong spiritual life in the family as related to the statistics of families that had no financial stress, etc. You did not let her complete her thoughts on that which is telling. You weren’t listening. You seemed to have an agenda as the interviewer rather than being mindful of where your interviewee wanted to go.
Spirituality is to walk daily with the great divine. The Bible can not teach the great divine and science cannot deny the great divine. One must go inward to learn spituality. The kingdom is within. Spurituallity is your experience with God. It is a higher consciousness that has nothing to do with science. Broken spirit creates disease that is when science steps in. The soul is consciousness. We are all energy. Christ was pure love and he was at the highest consciousness one can feel. A master healer. As you reach higher consciousness tou connect with the great divine. We are all born with a spirit. Yhe problem is we live in a spiritually bankrupt world. There is no greed amongst spiritual people. God has nothing to do with science he is pure spirit. Science is 3d the flesh which s t arts to die off young. We are all one. All this academia and science is dangerous. We are spirits living a short human life. Many are living higher consciousness and they walk with the great divine most live as broken children longing for the next substance to feed their emptiness. Spiritual dont need any education they go with and are able to ascend by emotional intelligence. We are all born with an innate longing for the great divine. What you should study is why man has not evolved since the beginning of time. Rape murder incest war poverty. Science will never heal that only christ consciousness can heal that. The world is not in a good place. We are all spirit science comes second and most addiction and mental illness are trauma.
The one percent tax loophole. Last word; loophole. Accordingly; this “loophole” consists of more tha, uhm; one percent. What we believe and what we do not want to believe. Either invest yourself further into technology. Or abstain from technological practice altogether. If you keep going, knowing what you know; what do you think will happen ? Reincarnations? Of your own choice, knowing what you know?
Somehow in the past year I stumbled on your podcasts Rich. Thank you for all of the amazing afterthoughts you probably unknowingly have created for your audience. Dr. Miller was extraordinary. Truly, I was not sure at first how I felt about where she was going, but I wanted it to be informative. It far surpassed that. I am most happy that her intelligence, work on neuroscience and spirituality and her place in the science community will give validity to those dealing with internal confusion.
This is why Veganism is such a significant tool of awakening consciousness and making the connection. If you watch any of Earthing Ed’s content you will see he refers to animals as BEINGS, as SOMEONE. The way indigenous elders will call trees, stones, plants, animals their relatives…Once we acknowledge Unitive Consciousness by languaging it, we authenticate it, and an inherent, emergent intelligence & it will arise and transform our collective experience into COMPASSION & WISDOM <3
Fascinating. Rejuvinating. Empowering and beautifully comforting interview. “The knowing of the ❤ points to truth…”: this feels like “being home” to me. Thank you so much. Imo: I ask you to consider leaving your plant based food advert to the end, or front load it. It felt invasive, particularly in the context of this inspiring subject. It was creepy to me. Just a suggestion for you.
I like the first 30 minutes but this went from science to pseudo-scientific necromancy in a hurry. Odd that she says we need something new and in the next breath agrees we need to return to ancient wisdom. It’s called the Bible. Every single thing she reports as novel has been in that book for some 2,000 years. The problem isn’t science it’s sin. People who accept that level of brokenness can be healed. It happens all the time.
Only listened to the first 30 min, couldn’t get over the funny “anecdotal evidence” she was bringing. You can be educated and believe in feel good bullshit at the same time as she clearly proveds. I have nothing against spirituality or meditation and mindfulness, but do you need to believe that animals are directly communicating with you? Totally bonkers.
