Fun Fact for the youngsters: (rockstar) Courtney Love insulted (rival rockstar) Gwen Stefani by calling her a cheerleader, which then lead Gwen Stefani to write this March/Cheer in reply. In an interview, Stefani is quoted in saying, “You want me to be a cheerleader? Well, I will be one then. And I’ll rule the whole world, just you watch me.” Upon the songs release it did very good in the charts placing at #1. The song is noted for teaching a whole generation how to spell the word, “Bananas”. A shortened edited version is still used at football games, using a combination of the Marching Band and Cheerleaders. Usually, the Marching Band will play the tune while the Cheerleaders cheer the word, “Bananas”. In case no one understands what a “holla back girl” is, in the beginning of this article the girl calls out to Gwen and instead of Gwen hollering back she turns and laughs meaning she’s not with the back and forth bs. And this song was actually a diss to Courtney love calling Gwen “a cheerleader” which Gwen was nothing like growing up. Plus, it has double meaning in this case meaning “I don’t holler back, I’m gonna beat your ass instead.” And basically the lead cheerleader shouts something and the cheerleaders holler back by repeating what the lead cheerleader says. “Give me a B, Give me an A, Give me an N” etc.
In order to fully understand what a “hollaback girl” is, one must first understand what it means to “hollaback.” When one hollas back, one responds to a verbal insult with their own reciprocal verbal insult. This in itself is not necessarily a negative thing, however to become a “hollaback girl” is something to be avoided. A “hollaback girl” is a girl who responds only with these verbal insults, without ever actually taking it to the next level and kicking some ass. In other words, a hollaback girl is all talk and no walk. That best explains as to why Gwen Stefani wrote this song in response to Courtney Love’s insult on her. Courtney insulted her by calling her a “cheerleader”. And the rest is history.
Unprovoked, Courtney Love picked on Gwen Stefani saying, “Being famous is just like being in high school. But I’m not interested in being a cheerleader. I’m not interested in being Gwen Stefani.” After that quote Gwen recorded her first solo album with the cheerleader anthem, “Hollaback Girl”. So after 17 years I think I know what a “holla back girl” is…. it’s a girl that doesn’t resort to “talking trash” in response to disrespect. She will just straight up whoop some ass. Im 27 years old and been hearing this song since I was like 10 lol. It’s now 1/11/2021 and I think I finally figured it out.
The debate over why Gwen made this song gets more comments than the actual song lol And imo this seems the most logical explanation: it’s a diss to Courtney Love for talking sh*t. But it goes way deeper than just calling Gwen a cheerleader. Courtney Love told Howard stern she slept with Gavin Rossdale while he was with Gwen. Nobody in their right mind makes an entire song over being called a cheerleader. But when Hollywoods hottest mess (Courtney Love) goes on H. Stern claiming she got with ur husband… yeah u bet there’s gonna be retaliation. this song was Gwen’s response, ironically a holla back girl is a “all bark no bite” type of btch in a argument. Excellent song from my childhood and one of the best of 2005. I have never seen a 34-year-old woman (currently 53) like Gwen Stefani wear those youthful outfits, she even looked 20. Nowadays, gentlemen over 30 years already use without people judging it. At first it was very strange to see them like this but in more modern times I no longer see anything strange.
