Is Beelzebub A Favorable Omen For Girls?

In the first season of Good Omens, Beelzebub, a high-ranking demon and Prince of Hell, appeared as Crowley’s boss. According to Neil Gaiman, Beelzebub uses ze/zem/zir pronouns. In season two, Beelzebub’s changing face is cleverly addressed on-screen with a throwaway line. The show’s writers can easily explain the recasting by having Beelzebub casually address her new name.

As Good Omens returns next week, fans of Prime Video’s Neil Gaiman-Terry Pratchett adaptation will notice interesting things about the supporting cast. Anna Maxwell Martin, an English actress, plays Beelzebub in the Amazon series Good Omens. She is also known for her roles in the BBC TV series Line of Duty and the comedy Motherland. In Season 2, supreme archangel Gabriel and Hell’s leader Beelzebub unexpectedly fell in love, but they never kissed on-screen.

In the show, Beelzebub is played by a female, but shows no definitive masculine or feminine features, and we hear no pronouns in reference to her. The tv companion refers to the character as “she”, while the script book says “he”. Beelzebub is one of the few, if not the only demon or angle who doesn’t have a preferred gender.

The Zzzzir comes from the fact that Beelzebub uses ze/zem/zir pronouns, but since then, she has called she/her pronouns, even on panels with you. Beelzebub is an agender queer character from Good Omens, and the demons like Beelzebub (Anna Maxwell Martin) and Dagon (Elizabeth Berrington), who are played by female actresses, are given the same vile design. In the first season, the demon Beelzebub was portrayed by Anna Maxwell Martin, and now the part is being taken over by Shelley Conn.

What is the gender of Beelzebub?

Traditional demons in Christianity, such as Satan, Beelzebub, and Asmodeus, are often assigned a male gender in religious and occultist texts. This is also true for succubi, who despite taking a female shape to copulate with men, are often thought of as male. The Testament of Solomon presents the demon Ornias, who assumes the shape of a woman to copulate with men. King Solomon asks Beelzebub if there are female demons, suggesting a difference between male shapeshifting demons (incubi/succubi) and genuine female demons.

Angels in Christianity also have masculine genders, names, and functions. John Milton in Paradise Lost suggests that although demons may seem masculine or feminine, spirits can either seize or both, as their essence is pure. Satan is the father of Death with Sin, a female spirit. In Paradise Lost, Adam explicitly states that all angels of heaven are masculine.

What is Beelzebub’s pronoun in Good Omens?

Neil Gaiman once joked about Beelzebub’s pronouns being “probably Zzzzzzir”, but later suggested it’s “Lord Beelzebub”. Beelzebub is a main character in the Prime Video series Good Omens, the leader of Hell’s forces and the archangel Gabriel’s equivalent. In the first season, Anna Maxwell Martin portrays Beelzebub, while in the second season, Shelley Conn portrays them. Their altered appearance is explained by an in-universe reason.

Beelzebub’s significance in the series is evident in “In the Beginning”, where Crowley reassures Beelzebub that they don’t suspect anything. In “The Doomsday Option”, Crowley presents Beelzebub on changing the M25’s shape into the sigil Odegra, meaning “Hail the great beast, devourer of worlds” in the Dark Priesthood of Ancient Mu.

Is Helluva Boss LGBT?

Helluva Boss features various LGBTQ characters, including a bisexual demon named Moxxie and a pansexual demon named Blitzo. In Western animation, LGBTQ themes refer to plotlines and characters that are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or otherwise queer in series produced in Western countries, not in Japan (anime). Early examples include Bugs Bunny in drag, wearing a wig and a dress, as a form of comedy, or episodes of Tom and Jerry under restrictive moral guidelines like the Hays Code. Some argue that animation has always had a history of queerness.

This evolved into gay-coded characters in Disney films like Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid, as well as animated series such as The Simpsons and South Park. Later years, other series would more prominently depict same-sex characters and relationships. However, series creators have encountered roadblocks, with some companies attempting to make their programs “more welcoming of different characters” and ensure all-ages animation is no longer “bereft of queer characters”.

Gender has always been a component of animation, with scholars Harry Benshoff and Sean Griffin writing that animation has always “hint(ed) at the performative nature of gender”. They specifically cite the example of Bugs Bunny wearing a wig and a dress, acting as a female rabbit in drag. Some argue that the Walt Disney Company played with gender stereotypes in the past, with Disney’s cartoon Ferdinand the Bull being “not necessarily gay, but it’s definitely queer”.

Animation and popular culture scholar Jo Johnson later described Bugs Bunny as challenging “signifiers of traditional masculinity” and challenging “the conventional notion of anatomy and gender”. He also recounted that Bugs Bunny appeared in drag on at least 45 separate occasions, and his gender ambiguity fluxed, showing masculinity and femininity at different times, even though he is clearly heterosexual.

However, the Hays Code, which banned curse words, forbid depiction of interracial relationships, and had a “puritanical view of sex”, was replaced by a film rating system in 1968, with many of its “arbitrary moral guidelines” persisting for decades. One scholar, Jo Johnson, argued that Jerry in the Tom and Jerry cartoons had an androgynous design, even if feminized, and noted a possible homoerotic subtext between Jerry and Tom, especially when there is cross-dressing.

Cave M. Olmstead, an interdisciplinary philosophy scholar, built upon Johnson’s work, arguing that Tom and Jerry “subverts normalized gender and sexuality structures” through theatrical play and performance, transgressing the normal construction of gender.

Does Good Omens have LGBT?

Good Omens season two is a refreshing departure from the usual LGBTQ+ show, with the cast’s support for the LGBTQ+ community. Tennant, Sheen, and Gaiman have all shown their commitment to queer characters and actors, not only in Good Omens but also in other shows like The Sandman and American Gods. This allyship is heartwarming and necessary, especially in light of JK Rowling’s hateful comments towards the trans community. Gaiman has never tried to retcon queerness into his work, unlike Rowling who admitted to thinking of Dumbledore as gay in Harry Potter books.

The show’s second season is praised for its increased queerness, and if Prime Video orders a third season, fans can expect more queerness and joy for the protagonists. Gaiman has promised to write another Good Omens novel if the show isn’t renewed, but the lesson is to avoid ending a beloved queer show on a cliffhanger before it’s confirmed for another season.

  • Well Azirowley has withstood 6000 years of relationship ups and downs to come out strong and sure after the not-pocalypse. While I feel that Gabeez may have been a newer development started by their respective agencies having to cross check and balance archives to figure out how the holy cow these two DID THAT! Lol. HEAD CANNON: After the debacles at the field and trials both sides agree they need answers. So naturally Gabriel and Beelzebub, being the heads of their departments, spend part of their work shifts at a big table in a neutral zone, HUGE mounds of records stretching behind each. Beez: year ____, at ___? Gabe: sifting through a pile Here, it says “___, ___ ___?” Beez: confirmed stamps record, sighs Gabe: stamps, pulls random record Year ____, at ____? {Fast forward} Decades of this and the occasional “debate” over who’s information is flawed has led to several tumbling matches, several beers and a few long conversations that neither will admit to having ever happened, and they certainly never enjoyed them. And no, their shifts in the archives have not gotten longer. They now sit side by side and lean into each other “to read and verify documents faster” {Fast forward} Apocalypse V2 is nearly upon the world. Standing side by side back at the field is strange. The Bentley pulls up, an angel and demon get out and stand, glaring. Gabriel goes to speak, Aziraphale grabs hold of Crowley’s hand. There is a small sound from beside him, Gabriel’s mouth goes dry, his hand twitches, he understands.

  • After 6000 years of pining over a certain angel, Crowley finally works up the courage to blast this song through a stereo at some ungodly hour into the night outside of Aziraphale’s bookshop. Aziraphale is just confused as all hell and he doesn’t understand what’s going on at all- Well, time to wait for another century.

  • I loved your renditions of Zira and Crowley and if you don’t mind I’d like to suggest an animatic for ineffable husbands using the song Church by Fall Out Boy. Specifically the song centering around Crowley going from angst of knowing that he can’t have his hubby, to grim acceptance of all that he’s willing to give up for Zira such as sacrifice himself during the (seemingly inevitable) fight with satan (cause i think it’d match the point in the song that goes “and if death is the last appointment, then we’re all just sitting in the waiting room. I am just a human trying to avoid my certain doom”), to ecstatic happy fluff after adam saves the day and Crowley getting together with Zira. You ain’t gotta do shit with this but i figured i’d throw this idea around to people making Good Omens animatics just to see if anyone picks it up. I’d do it myself but i can’t draw for shit sooooo here i am.

  • Reads the description Me: Ah geez now I have to do that. At .75x Me: I’m getting hell-hole-highschool vibes. This is really awkward, Imma go hide in a bathroom. At .5x Me: Definitely a pair of murderers finna kill my poor babies. … At .25x Me: Okay they’re just drunk( and/or maybe high). This is fine.
