In Pathfinder, a character cannot cast a spell while falling unless the fall is greater than 500 feet or the spell is an immediate action. Casting a spell while falling requires a concentration check, as it is a special activity that takes a variable number of actions depending on the spell’s stat block. A prepared spellcaster can heighten a spell by preparing it in a higher-level slot than its normal spell level, while a spontaneous spellcaster can heighten a spell by casting it.
The falling rules read, “A character cannot cast a spell while falling, unless the fall is greater than 500 feet or the spell is…” However, the core rulebooks do not specify any rules for falling. A character can cast a spell of 1 action if they fall 500 feet and are still falling. If the fall is less than 500 feet, they can cast a few standard actions.
A concentration check of 10+Spell level is called for if the character is undergoing a concentration check. A falling creature’s rate of descent slows to 60 feet per round until the spell ends. If the creature lands before the spell ends, it takes no falling damage.
In Pathfinder, there is a Fly skill, which most people don’t have but has one. To make a fly, a six-second round combined with falling means no full attack. If you start casting a spell but something interferes with your concentration, you must make a concentration check or lose the spell.
