Threat Plates is a powerful addon in World of Warcraft that allows users to customize their nameplates with ease. It offers extensive flexibility and customization of their appearance and behavior. To set up the Threat Plates settings guide, users can use the default ThreatPlates UI, which contains a long list of spellIDs. In the “threat system” tab, users can choose the “scale” menu. Threat Plates allows users to change colors, fonts, sizes, and more.
Scripting is a new feature of Threat Plates that will be introduced in a future version, allowing users to extend the functionality with custom Lua scripts. Users can also filter away debuffs that they don’t want to see above the nameplate. To increase the size of icons with time of cds, dots, or other items, users can go to auras > widgets > debuffs > filter, select “block” and type in the names of the auras they don’t want to see.
The Threat Plates addon allows users to specify nameplate styles, scale, color, highlight/glow, and threat based on NPC names. However, the dynamic nameplate modification based on the spell being used can be broken, with unkickable spells showing up as kickable and kickable spells showing up as unkickable.
In conclusion, Threat Plates is an excellent addon for customizing nameplates in World of Warcraft. It offers a wide range of customization options and can be customized to suit specific needs.

Mad late to this article but im 9 months into wow, got to heroic raiding in DF, but was basically on default UI when it came to nameplates and targeting cause all articles I watched just made it confusing. This article was amazing especially for a semi new WoW player. Im excited to use it especially when Im overwhelmed as a dps and sometimes dont know what im targeting lol. Thank you man!
I learned so much more about this addon then I thought was possible. Thank you so much for the time and effort that went into making this guide. You Cleared up a lot of questions that I had. I have 1 issue that I cannot resolve. When I target something, there is a white border around the nameplate. I just can’t figure it out. Btw I just subscribed, I really like your content. DISREGUARD: I watched your article again and figured it out. I missed it the first go around. Thanks again.
Thanks for this. got my plates sorted. Somehow it was hard to find a good setting for the spacing of these plates. i ended up testing for an hour for tanking. ended up on 0.01 75% and 68% under blizzard settings in general tab. Under threat system textures i removed that as it is very annoying on your screen. If green good, yellow slap some tps on it. green you tank it. All fine! perfect. Thanks again
hey man, appreciate the article. i’ve been trying to set up threat plates but for some reason when i enter a raid group or party the default blizzard nameplates come up. when i’m not in a group all friendly nameplates are set up perfectly as I want it to be through the addon. is there a setting in threat plates to keep the same nameplate configuration in a group? sorry if you answered this at some point in the article, might have missed it due to the length of the article >.<
March 2, 2024 the “copy from” or “import” from one character’s profile to a new character does not work. I have tried a thousand times to get my settings from my hunter to my DK but nothing works. Help please. Current TP version is 11.1.39 and is the must up to date offered on Curse. I don’t want to have to manually go through everything for every single character I have.
Not sure what your goal is with your presentation. I am interested in the addon but I turned off your presentation 15% in. I can see that this article is 34 minutes long and, possibly you are trying to keep it short which is not a bad thought. Unfortunately, some things just take more time. So, I simply do not like your presentation. You run through this as fast as you possibly can. I see many YouTubers doing the same thing and I always turn off the article. I am 80 years old and that might be my problem but I like things presented to me at a moderate speed so that I have time to process the information being imparted. You seem to jump from item to item and I can’t deal with it so my only choice is to look elsewhere for the information. I thank you for making the effort and wish you well. BTW, this is not the first of your articles that I have watched with the same result.
Hey Coach! This guide is awesome, but I had a question! Currently playing classic SoD, and trying to use ThreatPlates to show friendly name plates in dungeons, but no matter what I do it only shows default blizzard nameplates. I made “show blizzard nameplates” was off in visibility, but still no luck! I’m playing heal mage so i want to see the buffs and things i’m putting on friends to manage my heals! I heard that blizzard made some sort of ban or something that prevented friendly (only friendly) nameplates from being modified by addons in dungeons/instanced areas back in legion, but I don’t know if that’s true. Any help? Super frustrating!
Excellent guide! I had been experimenting with different nameplate addons trying to find the one I liked best and this one is so great! My setup is pretty similar to yours, but under automation I have it set to show healthbars instead of headlines on friendly units in combat. I ended up leaving neutral NPCs to healthbar view because on attackable NPCs/creatures I’d prefer to see their healthbar– and the headline “force view by status” option takes care of the other ones. There’s so many options it’s really easy to tweak it the way you want.
I tried Tidy Plates, but I just wan’t happy with it. I think I spent around 3 hours on Threat Plates after perusal your article and I think I’m OK with what I got now. It’s a huge improvement in many respects and just a few minor things aren’t quite as I would like. It’s cool that you can use the (optional) DogTag library to customize all the text labels, so I made friendly names show either the guild or the health under the player name. If the target health is under 95%, then that is shown and colored yellow or red based on the percentage: (PercentHP < 0.3 ? Red ! (PercentHP < 0.5 ? Yellow))(PercentHP < 95 ? Concatenate(Round(HP / 1000), "K ", PercentHP, "%") ! Guild)
In case you’re wondering, ‘localization’ is a technical term specific to translation studies. It refers in general to any changes you might make in translation so that things feel familiar to the reader of a translated text, and in particular to changing formats of date&time, units of measure, and such. You ‘localize’ stuff so that it fits the habits of the target reader. See that, ‘Transliterate Cyrillic Letters’? It’s worth a try if you’re at a loss with all the ‘Russian’ names in the game.
Thank you. I have had this addon for a while and missed a setup option which kind of left me wondering why I even loaded the addon up. I see it now, and when I get back to my PC, I can fix it to make it work like I wanted. (I can also fix the headline look I setup by accident on non-targeted players).
Way to go again! Thank you for pointing out and explaining ‘occlusion’. That fixes my issue of nameplates everywhere 😆 Your in depth walk through of the mob cast triggers etc is perfect. Each time I learn from you, I make more connections and how I can apply the new info to other software, addons overlays. It’s that old saying, “if you Do something for someone, you fix their problem for the day, but if you Teach them how to do it for themselves, you’ve fixed their problem forever” Thank you, Thank you again for stellar work. All the best wishes to you and yours, from me and mine🙂 I can’t wait to find/see your suite of articles on Weak Auras 😆😆😆😆
Hi, thanks for the article, it’s amazing. I was trying to setup Plater going throughout so much pain, but when I saw your threat plates guide I switched to it without any regrets 😅 I was trying to Google custom nameplates for arena, but I always end up finding Plater related stuff. Any idea of where I could find something decently premade?
I know this is an old article, but are you able to have a custom nameplate for simply keeping frames on your screen for a tall mob? For instance, in Ulduar, while tanking Steelbreaker I need to be able to see his nameplate for his Fusion Punch cast and to see if he is standing inside of a Rune of Power, but his nameplate is so high up because he’s so tall, that I cannot see it unless I angle my camera up. If there’s a general setting for tall mobs keep the nameplate on screen that would work as well. Thanks in advance! <3
Does anyone know if its possible in TP etc., to make the groups TANK nameplate bigger? I’m playing Aug Evoker so we need to apply certain buffs to tanks etc., i.e., Blistering Scales. When in a large grp or raid for instance, the Wow Raid frames make all nameplates the same size, making it hard to quickly focus who the tank is (without of course making the tank a focus target)
Hi! Great vid. Just a question, the “Retail Threat Plates” contains both the M+ interrupts and the custom threat plates, right? Because when I try to import both I only get the ArcaneIntellect profile from the “Retail Threat Plates” pastebin. Just making sure I’m not making any mistakes. When I try to import the M+ Interrupts in the Custom Nameplates tab, I get duplicate custom nameplates which are the same as the ones showing in “Retail Threat Plates”
Noob question here. trying to use threatplates in wotlk, at it just doesn’t work in dungeons. Everything works fine in open world, but when i join dungeon plates are becoming totally different, for group members its awfully blue, and enemies plates are green.. despite i have totally different settings. Help please.
hello I’m just a little frustrated at this addon i want it to work but ive installed it correctly and i am able to get the screen to come up../tptp but it seems something has gone wrong. its not showing the name bars at all..is it possible if i have to enable somthing? i would appreciate the help thank you.
I got a question: I made a profile for myself and each time i go into a dungeon the nameplates add an extra Threat glow on the target which doesnt show up on target dummies when i test, why is that? how can i make my template not change in dungeon? is there any dungeon section specific that changes each time you enter a “dungeon instance”? because it’s getting really frustrating each time i go into a dungeon my nameplates change, thanks alot in advance!
Hi!! sorry I just had one quick question!! I really like to move my namplate and my targets name plate to be lower in relative to my actual character. How do I simply unlock the nameplate to move it down lower like you can normally? I cannot FOR the life of me find out how to do it. The normal right click on frame option in the drop down menu is gone now!!! 🙁 please help!!!!
hey brother is there a way to keep the scale of the target while in combat because as soon as you enter combat that 130% scale or 30% increased size tends to go away is there an option to keep that size while in combat with your current target? lIke making it so that your current target that you targeted before combat is bigger, but also when you enter combat it stays bigger?
