Project MKUltra was a top-secret CIA project that aimed to develop mind-bending substances, techniques, and medical procedures. It was a series of clandestine experiments conducted by the agency in the 1950s and 1960s to assess the potential use of LSD and other drugs. The CIA used brainwashing, hypnosis, and torture on thousands of subjects brutalized by the infamous Project MK-Ultra experiments.
During the early days of the Cold War, the CIA ordered the creation of a secret program intended to find ways of mind control. They funded an army of psychiatric patients. The US Supreme Court wrote in a 1985 decision on a related case that MKUltra was not one project but 162 different secret projects indirectly financed by the CIA.
The mass destruction of documents relating to MKUltra means that we may never know the full extent of the project, making it a rich source of conspiracy theories and speculation. The CIA’s mind control research program, which ran from 1953 to 1973, has been the subject of numerous conspiracy theories since its inception.
Conspiration theory is a widely used term in today’s society, but it is important to understand what a conspiracy theory is and how it can be labeled. The motivated reasoning hypothesis suggests that people may not wish to label their beliefs as conspiracy theories to avoid the social stigma associated with that label.
