What is the oldest school uniform in the world?

School uniforms have a long history dating back to the 16th century in England, with charity schools like Christ’s Hospital being among the first to adopt uniforms. The Archbishop of Canterbury ordered the wearing of the cappa clausa in 1222, marking the first documented institutionalized use of a standard academic dress. The practice has been adopted by many countries and is now common worldwide. Uniforms promote social equality and an esprit de corps among students, but have also been criticized for promoting uniformity characteristic of militarism.

The decision to implement school uniform policy is controversial and polarized in societies and countries. In countries like the United Kingdom, South Africa, and several Asian nations, school children must wear approved uniforms that conform to their school’s policy. In modern Europe, Britain, Malta, and Ireland are the only countries where school uniform is widely adopted by state schools and generally supported by national and local governments. Some independent schools and state schools do not have uniforms, allowing students to dress appropriately.

  • The one man feels its offensive and to have that opinion is fine. However he based that opinion on his misconception that there is no positive history to the Word? How about we talk facts. The term Redskins is a literal translation of an Algonquin term for warrior. The term was later adopted as a self identifier for Natives all across the US uniting us as a collective. That is a pretty darn POSITIVE history from a Native American’s stand point. If you want to hear more of that history I am glad to share. Thank you
