The decal quantity setting in Skyrim can make runes appear invisible, but they can still be set off by setting it to “Medium” or higher. To activate runes, shoot any destruction spell at them, even a quick burst of one of your dps spells. You can also use Telekinesis to launch an object or throw an object onto the rune.

To manually set off runes and other traps, sneak into the area where the target is, cast an offense rune (Fire Rune, Frost Rune, Shock Rune), or cast poison runes using any Restoration projectile spell from a distance. Some enemies are immune to these spells, such as dragons, Ash Spawn, and others.

This mod corrects the rune spells from vanilla and Dragonborn, making them work in a standardized way with each other and the rest of the game. Runes can also be set as traps for enemies in another room by casting the rune in a doorway or hall and getting the enemy’s attention via Throw Voice or projectiles. You can use a ward to walk over it, but only another spell can set it off.

Disabling rune traps with a magic spell is a late discovery, but spamming the runes will detonate the instant they hit a valid target and raise your destruction skill much faster than any spell. When done with melee, hit the 1 button again and sheath the weapon with Fire Runes in both hands ready.

This mod will change all six runes available in Skyrim, including the Dragonborn DLC. To be an effective mage assassin, unlock and acquire the perk in the Illusion skill tree called Quiet Casting. Certain traps can be activated or disabled by casting spells like Magelight and Courage on them. Pressure plates do not have to be stepped on to activate them.
