I was over the moon as a 13 year old girl from Turkey visiting New York City in 1990. In a music store, seeing how overwhelmed and happy I was, my mom gave me some money and told me to pick out one album from an artist I didn’t know but one that caught my eye. I picked up Johnny Gill’s album. I’ve listened to that cassette so many times for so many years, guessing the lyrics (My English wasn’t so good), dancing to it and simply daydreaming to it. Thank you Johnny, you are such a talented amazing musician. Lots of love from Istanbul!

I recently found a broadcast of MTV from this period where this and “Poison” played in the same hour, airing in between the Knebworth concert and the Headbangers’ Ball, proving that in those pre-Internet, pre-Beavis & Butthead days, the TV was still king regarding music promotion. Ralph would later have his solo top ten hit “Sensitivity” about six months later. Sadly, people under 40, even those in the maturing 25-39 group don’t have to much appreciation for this great, overlooked period of urban contemporary music if it isn’t rap.
