The tradition of gifting tarot decks has sparked debate among practitioners, with some people believing that it is necessary to receive their first deck as a gift. However, this practice has no effect on the potency of the deck and can be done without gifting.
One common myth regarding the Tarot is that you need to be gifted your first deck to avoid bad luck or incorrect readings. However, this myth comes from various factors, including real consequences. Before mass printing, the Tarot superstition suggested that if someone tells you that the first deck must be gifted, that person must purchase you your first deck and a new house.
According to tarot experts, this is a myth and is “total rubbish”. If your first deck was a gift and you love it, you are lucky. If not, don’t let this become a limiting belief preventing you from learning.
In general, a gifted deck is unlikely to be a problem, as you are likely already infused it with your own energy. However, if this deck was gifted, it may not be a problem.
A longstanding myth exists within certain circles in the tarot community, suggesting that tarot decks should be received as gifts and not bought for oneself. In my personal opinion, receiving a Tarot deck should be a gift, preferably from the Master who teaches you Tarot.
In conclusion, the tradition of gifting tarot decks has sparked debate among practitioners, but it is essential to start learning right now and not wait for a prince or a prince-like figure.

Should you shuffle a new tarot deck?
When acquiring a new tarot deck, it is essential to thoroughly shuffle the cards to ensure they are in order. The most common method is to place the deck on the floor and smoosh them around, then pick them up and start shuffling. Some experts suggest keeping the cards with you for a week to tune them into your energy and vibration, while others prefer spending extra time shuffling them. One common technique is the overhand shuffle, where you place the deck in one hand and release a section of cards at a time into the opposite hand until the cards are mixed up.

Tarot cards can be a helpful tool for interpreting your emotions and thoughts. If you pull a card with positive connotations or intentions that you want to dream about, sleeping with it can be beneficial. However, some people may find the energy distracting for sleep. If you feel pulled to sleep with a card, go for it. If you are constantly stirring, remove it and try to fall asleep again. How to pick a tarot deck for someone?
The representation of people in tarot cards is a topic of debate, with traditional decks like Rider Waite Smith often leaving little room for people of color (POC), queer people, and those with rebellious bodies. This lack of diversity can be beneficial for personal development and for those planning to read for others. While there are growing numbers of diverse decks, it is still not the norm to see a wide diversity of people in cards. Some readers prefer “people-free” tarot decks, such as those with animals or other beings as characters.
Asali’s Tarot, on the QTPOC list, is a good resource for those seeking decent POC and/or queer/genderqueer representation. The Little Red Tarot Shop offers collections of diverse tarot decks to explore. It is important to be aware of who is visually represented in your tarot deck to make an informed choice.
What tarot deck should beginners get?
Naude recommends the Rider Waite Smith tarot for beginners to familiarize themselves with the foundation of tarot practice. Rachel True, a longtime tarot reader, offers “True Heart Intuitive Tarot” with beautiful illustrations and a personal guidebook. This deck connects moments from True’s Hollywood life to tarot concepts, and astrologer Lisa Stardust calls it a great way to connect to the cards. For Taylor Swift fans and aspiring tarot readers, a Swift-inspired deck is recommended, featuring each card pairing a song lyric with a tarot concept. For example, the Tower card symbolizes falling apart, while the Lovers card represents the song “Paper Rings”.

📹 Should Your First Tarot Deck Be Gifted? LET’S DISCUSS!
Hey friends! Let’s have a discussion in the comments!! ☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀ AS OF 1/2021 ☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀ JOIN MY NEW TAROT …
I have to respect the tradition behind a first deck being gifted, especially as another commenter mentioned with hereditary witch families, but for those of us who didn’t have the privilege to grow up in a witchy family, waiting to have our first decks gifted to us would be a barrier to getting to experience tarot for ourselves. There is no one in my life who would gift me with a deck, so I had to buy my own. Again, that’s not to say I don’t respect the tradition! I think it’s a sweet way of building an almost immediate bond with a deck, and I wish that was something I could have experienced. But I also appreciate that I live in a day and age where no one can dictate whether or not I get to choose to experience this for myself. 🥰
I do not think it is important whether a deck is gifted or not .. for me I brought my own deck and continue to work with that deck today 20+ years later. (had not heard of the gifted aspect at that time ) I have given tarot decks to friends as gifts to get them started on their journey.. but I do not think it is necessary, with the options we have today with the stores selling decks plus the online availability…I think this is very personal
So I do not think your first deck has to be gifted. I do think that some hereditary witch families have it as a tradition and that’s why this is still such a touchy subject in the witch community. All that being said I was gifted my first deck but it was by total Devine intervention! Lol. I had preordered myself a deck but wouldn’t receive it for a while.I then ordered some crystals from a different shop on Etsy well the item I ordered ended up selling so fast that Etsy glitched and she had to order more from her vendor so I had to wait a week before it would be sent to me. She decided to send me a tarot deck and some additional crystals as a thank you for waiting. That’s how I ended up with my first deck. She didn’t even tell me she was doing that. I had been arguing with myself on if my first deck should be gifted or not. I was so surprised and amazed when the box showed up. I have gifted other first decks to people and it’s just fun to give and see the happiness in people!
