The Mystics, a race of natural wizards, lived during the Age of Division and were offshoots of the Skeksis. After 1,000 years, they gathered around Thra’s Crystal to reunite with the Skeksis and become Urskeks once again. The Mystic Archer sacrifices himself to kill the Hunter, and in his place is a Skeksis.

📹 The REAL Reason Why the Mystics Remained Hidden (Dark Crystal Topic)
Darkcrystal #mystics Quite possibly the most fascinating Dark Crystal topic, is the fact that the Mystics needed to keep not only …
Where are the Mystics in Dark Crystal Age of Resistance?
The Mystics, after leaving the Castle of the Crystal, settled in a valley beyond the Dark Wood. The valley, a spiral of powerfully shaped stones, was transformed by centuries of urRu occupation, creating homes in caves and tunnels shaped by trans-mutative powers and powerful chants. The spiral path leading up to the complex of caves ends at the cave of urSu the Master. The Standing Stones, arranged by urTih the Alchemist, protected the valley by creating a net of protective energy around the region.
This technique is similar to the trapping of suns and crystal energies in a web of mirrors, as performed by skekTek the Scientist. The valley’s protection is owed to the Standing Stones, which were arranged in patterns that formed spirals and circles of stones.
Why did the Skeksis and Mystics split?
Two thousand years ago, a new race of beings, known as ‘urSkeks,’ arrived in Thra. They were drawn across the universe by the Crystal of Truth, using it to purge their darkness. However, the experiment ended in disaster, and the urSkeks were split into two new species: the cruel Skeksis and the gentle Mystics. The Skeksis seized control of Thra and established themselves as the all-powerful lords of the Crystal.
They are now two halves of a greater whole, living separately but with intertwined hearts and minds. The Skeksis reside in the Castle of the Crystal, where they rule over Thra and hold the Crystal of Truth captive. The Mystics have scattered to the winds in search of greater wisdom.
Why was The Dark Crystal banned?
The movie “The Dark Chrysalis” was banned in several Islamic countries due to content considered sacreligious. Jim Henson’s plan was to return to the darkness of original Brothers Grimm fairy tales, as children enjoyed the idea of being scared. Pre-production work revolved around Brian Froud’s designs without a finished script. Henson misunderstood Froud during early production conversations and intended to call the movie “The Dark Chrysalis” to refer to Skeksis dominance.
Henson loved the concept art and integrated the idea of the crystal into the storyline. Early drafts of the script featured Jen and Kira traveling through the underworld, encountering a race of underground mining creatures.
Are any of the Skeksis female?
SkekSa, also known as the Captain, is a major character in the J. M. Lee novel Tides of the Dark Crystal, despite being gender-less. SkekLi the Satirist, a Skeksis who wrote satire stories for the enjoyment of the Skeksis, was the main antagonist in Song of the Dark Crystal. In Tokyopop’s OEL manga Legends of the Dark Crystal vol. 1 and 2, two more Skeksis are introduced, but they are no longer canon.
SkekEer the Spy-Master, an ally of skekVar and the Mariner, is revealed to have been skekNa’s before the Skeksis needed slaves. SkekCru the Mariner, an ally of skekVar and skekEer the Spy-Master, is retconned as female and renamed SkekSa due to the novels.

Why did Dark Crystal get Cancelled?
Netflix has announced that the first season of the TV series, Age of Resistance, will not be returning due to the high viewership and cost involved. The decision suggests that the initial viewership was not enough to offset the time, expense, and effort required for another set of episodes. However, Henson Company CEO Lisa Henson has stated that the team is hoping to conclude the season one cliffhanger in some way, though it is unclear whether this means selling the series to other broadcasters or if they have a book or graphic novel spin-off in mind.
Will they ever continue The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance?
Netflix canceled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance after one season, despite its critical acclaim and well-received, winning an Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program. The prequel series, created by the Jim Henson Company, was a thrilling tale of three Gelflings sparking a rebellion against their Skeksis overlords. The show, which had an 89 critical score and 94 audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, was a testament to the overwhelmingly positive response and won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program.
However, Netflix canceled the series in 2020 due to high production costs and the challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic. The cancellation left many storylines unresolved, including the cliffhanger involving Deet and the future of the Gelfling rebellion. Despite the business reasons behind the cancellation, fans cannot forgive Netflix for canceling one of their all-time best original series.
Who is the most powerful Skeksis?
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a Netflix series that serves as a prequel to the 1982 film The Dark Crystal. The series is an imaginative and rich adaptation of the original film, with a blend of cutting-edge puppetry and technology. The villainous Skeksis, who are both grotesque and magnificent, are a fascinating part of the story. Each Skeksis has different strengths and presents a viable threat, and their motives and manipulation hold compelling real-world parallels.
The most powerful Skeksis in the Netflix series are ranked based on their actions and traits, as the most powerful from the original film should be a different list entirely. The series’ visuals and cutting-edge puppetry make it visually stunning to behold.
Why do Skeksis hate Gelfling?
The Wall of Destiny predicted a Gelfling would lead to the downfall of the Skeksis Empire. SkeksSo ordered the complete extermination of the Gelfling race, initiating the Garthim War. Skeksis created five false Shards to confuse Gelflings and unleashed their army of Garthim soldiers. They selectively bred Crystal Bats to act as spies, locating hiding places for Garthim. SkeksUng led the war, rooting out resistance and draining survivors to the Castle.
As Skeksis’ paranoia grew, they slaughtered their prisoners, preferring safety over pleasure. All Gelfling were exterminated, except for Jen and Kira, who were fostered by urRu and Podlings. The Great Conjunction comes, and they will live forever.
Who is the most evil Skeksis?
Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance has sparked a renewed interest in puppetry, Jim Henson’s fantasy worlds, and Gelflings. Fans have grown affection for the Skeksis, an unlikely group of creatures who are elaborate, bombastic, and charming. SkekVar, the General, is the worst of the Skeksis, enjoying hurting Gelflings the most and actively wanting to start a war to bathe himself in Gelfling blood. However, the best Skeksis will be determined through a hybrid judging system based on fan-favoritism, personality, and actions.
SkekVar, the General, is the worst of the Skeksis, as he enjoys hurting Gelflings the most and wants to start a war to bathe himself in Gelfling blood. SkekMal, the hunter, only enjoys hurting things for the thrill of the hunt, not just to end lives left and right.
Are Mystics and Skeksis the same?
The urRu, peaceful, passive counterparts to the Skeksis, were created during the Second Great Conjunction when the Crystal of Truth divided the urSkeks into two beings. The Skeksis were rapacious, whimsical, and cruel, while the urRu, dubbed “Mystics” by the Gelfling, were creative and healing creatures. Each was linked to a Skeksis opposite, and their fate was the same. After the division, confused fighting erupted, and two Skeksis were murdered.
The Mystics took on the world’s sorrows, but were unable to use their mystical wisdom outside their valley. After the Skeksis settled into their roles as Lords of the Dark Crystal, the Mystics traveled to a nearby valley to contemplate their fate. They used their magic to etch spirals on the valley’s stones, creating an impenetrable ward that the Skeksis and their maleficence could not penetrate.
📹 The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Ending Explained + Season 2 Theories
Netflix released it’s long-awaited series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance yesterday. If you are a fan of the original 1982 Dark …
7:34, the General is not the same character you cited from the movie. In the movie that’s “SkekUng, The Garthim Master”. There’s a bit when the Hunter is dying and the other Skeksis suggest recalling all their other members back to the castle, and that characters name is mentioned along with a few others. They’ve also got some different features if you look closely, like movie-guy has vestigal wings. There are a few other movie Skeksis that haven’t shown up in AOR, like the “Treasurer” and “Slave Master”, and there might be even more than that depending on how they play with the stories/background they set up in the various book series.
The moment I saw the General I said “This isn’t the General from the movie.” The character presented to us in the Netflix series has smoother brows, a thicker neck, wider set skull and even some teeth that jut out towards the corners of his mouth. If any of the other skeksis had looked different from their movie counterparts I wouldn’t have questioned it, but all of the returning characters look near identical. Even the Emperor looks like he did minus how crusty and close to death from the original. Still that same narrow beak lined with teeth jutting outward, the high cheeks, etc… So I initially thought Hunter would have become the General when I first saw him, but when they mentioned others, I knew the General we know from the movie just hasn’t made his way onto the show. I do hope to see him because his wit was the only that seemed to match Chamberlain’s
I was initially confused by what happened to the general in the final episode too, but after doing some online research it turns out that “the general” in Age of Resistance was skekVar, while the general in the movie was skekUng…see darkcrystal.fandom.com/wiki/SkekVar and darkcrystal.fandom.com/wiki/SkekUng for info on each, the wiki claims skekUng was briefly namechecked in the series as an absent skeksis who would be useful to recall to the Castle of the Crystal for his skills as a warrior (I couldn’t find that scene, but the wiki talk page mentions the general in the series is referred to as skekVar episode 4 when he’s interrogating Gurjin and the emperor interrupts him, and the other skeksis also call him skekVar in episode 10 after he’s stabbed by Rian). So, apparently skekUng took over the title of “the general” by the time of the movie, there’s no need for resurrection or alternate timelines.
I dont forsee them leaving Deet to just become evil. True shes slowly being corrupted, I dont think this rules her out completely as a heroine. She might even be able to use those powers against the Garthim. If I’m not mistaken, in the original film, there aren’t a lot of Garthim left. They have some but not an ‘army’ anymore. Plus, the Grunak are used to make them and they were wiped out as well. The last two were slaves to the Scientist and they were killed :/ also, we all just jumped on this ship of Deet and Rian being a thing so…they better not leave her out as a bad guy. Also, his name isnt pronounced like Ryan it’s pronounced Ree-ann.
As far as the vision with Rian on the crystal with the shard, one theory I’ve heard elsewhere is that it’s a fake. We see in the film, Aughra has a collection of shards, perhaps crafted by the Skeksis to trick anyone trying to reunite the crystal, perhaps even confusing SkekGra, the Heretic when he fashioned the Dual Glaive. Either way, Rian ends up with this fake and attempts to heal the crystal. But, without the true shard, his quest will fail.
I feel that Age of Resistance is the perfect replacement to fill the void that Game of Thrones has left. Furthermore, Lisa Hansen has succeeded in making the Dark Crystal universe so much more rich in mythology than the movie. Great show that I binge watched in one day and loved it so much that I’ve watched it in a second run.
I think Jen is the grandson of Rian and Deet because I remember one scene in the last episode where Rian is looking through Brea’s journal and he comes across a picture of what he believes Him and Deet. But Rian Where’s armor and his bangs are shorter and Deet has green skin and greenish whitish hair. The Gelfling in the picture show different features, The Stonewood boy has longer bangs, where armor looking clothes and the girl has light tan skin and very white hair. However the girl looks similar to deet, so maybe That’s Rian And Deet’s Daughter…
Two things to point out, where I think there will be a season 2 (yet to be confirmed by Netflix): 1 – In the ‘Age of Resistance’ title logo, there is a Roman numeral I in the lower-left portion of the title logo (blends in somewhat with the rest of the title logo)… could mean that this is first season was chapter/season 1 of more to come – which doesn’t really mean much, since it has been there since the beginning of the season. That said, even more important is: 2 – In a article put out by Netflix yesterday titled ‘How The Dark Crystal Took 30 Years to Prove Muppets Aren’t Just for Kids | Deep Cuts | Netflix’… at timestamp 10:19, the timeline reads “2019, Age fo Resistance Launch”. ‘Launch’! The second point is really telling, mes thinks… hoping for a season 2 real soon!!!~
I want to see season 2 so bad,. I loved this series so I hope Netflix will renew it for another season. I think she will become evil because of the darkening and will rule. She would be the most powerful being Among the skeksies. But could be good again when the crystal is healed. Season 2 in 2020 who’s with me?😁
My poor baby Deet! I genuinely cried when she was corrupted by the darkening! I hope they save her… and I think they will. It would be much too cruel to have a blooming romance between her and Rian just to destroy her character. I just hope there isn’t a love triangle. I’ve heard some people theorize about Brea and I’m NOT here for it. I thought the idea about there being multiple timelines is quite interesting! Is there definitely going to be a season 2, and if so, when will it be out?
We all know that as soon as the Sanctuary Tree gave all of it’s power to Deet, we saw the visions and future events that lead up to the plot of the Dark Crystal movie and I do believe that Jen is the son of Rian and Kira is the daughter of Brea. As for Deet with her power to control the Darkening I just hope she’ll be on the right path in Season 2 and help the Resistance.
The gelfling hiding the baby definitely looks like Brea; 99% sure she is Kira’s mother. Since we already know the gelfling lose the war I think poor Deet is going to be fully corrupted and either join the Skeksis or the darkening is going to act as a sentient force of nature and contribute to the genocide of the gelfling independent of the Skeksis. I’m hopeful that at the end before she dies she transfers the darkening back into the heart of Thra to be contained. I want my gentle Deet back, even if it’s only for a martyr’s last redemption. 🥺
The General in AoR is SkekVar and the General in the movie is SkekUng. Titles and bositions can change among the Skeksis, as with the Heretic who used to be the Conqerour. Doubly so for SkekUng, as he was something else before becoming the General, he was also know as the Master of Garthim. So he was a mayor power in the Skeksis circle, which is why he and SkekSil the Chamberlain came to blows. But unlike the Chamberlain who is loyal for the sake of convenience, the Generals are (as far as Ican see) loyal through and through, considering how the Emperor let’s him privy to his secrets. The Generals, after what I can gather, are the right hand of the Emperor while the Chamberlain is the other.
I keep seeing theories among fans, mostly young ones, saying that Kira may be the child of Deet and Rian which i think is complete trash. Deet is infected and the darkening consumes all. I think it’s safe to say she will definitely not be anyone’s love interest after this season, even if it was hinted at. A more likely scenario would be that Kira is the daughter of Rian and Brea, but I don’t think this is accurate either. My guess is, Kira is the daughter of Brea, and somebody else we haven’t seen yet, probably another Vapran. While Jen is probably the son of Rian and someone else as well. Jen is more ambiguous. He could possibly be a mix, maybe of a Drenchen or something? But who knows
When Rian (REE-an) stabs the General with the Dual Glave, a bit of The General’s essence is sucked into the crystal shard in the handle of the sword. I theorize, this may be part the way the General is resurrected. Also, in the show, they don’t show the General’s counter-part Mystic die. So, there’s also a possibility the General didn’t really die the way we thought.
The theory that has me thinking the most is if Brea is the mother of Kira lol However, Augra did say Kira had the gift of talking to animals like Deet so Brea could still be her mother but maybe we see new gelfings and Kira’s dad is someone who fights in the war with Brea and they fall in love and have her lol I think her and Rian were too storybook clique, Princess and Warrior, so if anything Rian could of given her the suggestion of Kira’s name to pay homeage but Jen is more believable as his son tbh. Maybe Rian was able to help Deet come back from the darkness and they both died fighting during the war, which makes sense the Ruler of the Mystics would of found the son of the leaders of the resistance. In the vision, it looked like Rian but we haven’t seen an updated version of Rian or Kira yet so maybe that’s why she looked shocked that she had seen her own child putting the shard in.
I’m almost certain that Kira is Rian’s child. The Mira/Kira similarity is likely not a coincidence and it makes total sense that he would honor Mira as the first casualty. Kira is also probably Vapran and Brea/Rian has already been alluded to as a possibility through the journal scene. The general from the movie isn’t the same one from the show at all… There are two skeksis in the movie that aren’t in the show yet and the movie general is one of them.
I don’t think the Darkening is corrupting Deet. I believe that she’ll likely harness it totally but it destroys the landscape like we see in the original movie. But I think she’ll likely die and return/exchange the energy back to Thra peacefully but she won’t be able to be around other Gelfling for extended periods of time because it would corrupt or destroy them.
I would actually be OK with it if it is an alternative time line. They’ve already proven that they’re capable of carrying the torch and bringing so much justice to the story that I’m not even worried. This is the best example that I’ve seen where bringing back something dear to my childhood has been enhanced it spectacularly!
Big fan of the series. But in case of the general if you remember one scene where the skesis are contemplating on what to do. One of them mentions others that are not within the castle, like the heretic. So my theory is that one of the other skesis that was mentioned, but never shown, could become the general. Even the newer general that was shown, he didnt look like the original general from the actual film. So it could be possible.
The mother was Brea, and the baby was Jen, as it’s shown in the movie how while Kira’s mother is in similar robes, we see Jen as a baby when adopted by the Mystics, and Kira as a toddler when hidden and then adopted by the Poddlings. Also, if you pay attention in the dreamfast, baby Jen has blonde hair, which is replaced by his raven colored hair with blue and blonde streaks as he ages. Vapra are partially distinguished by their blonde or raven hair, often with colors streaked in it. I believe that while Kira has the same pale skin and blonde hair like Vapra, her hair is actually too white, with no (obvious) streaks, which seem extremely common if not always in Vapra females, and also her eyes are too large, and her wings are too dull and shaped differently for her to be Vapra. However, these are traits that are dominant in Grottan gelflings. Also, her skin, is pale like a lot of Grottan, yet more pink than gold, which is seen in the Stonewood, Sifa, and Spriton clans. However, this can easily be narrowed down by looking at what clan our favorite Grottan’s love interest is from, Stonewood, a tribe where it seems as if colored streaks are only in males, in which looking at the white hair with no streaks against the hair where streaks are only in males, explains Kira’s lack of streaks. Also, looking at the cast, Deet and Rian (which is pronounced REE-an, not RYE-an) are the only two who are in a budding relationship, while Brea has not met anyone, so it could be possible for Deet to be cured and have a child, Kira, with Rian at the same time that Brea is looking for someone to settle down with as Jen has yet to even be conceived.
I don’t think the Darkening is necessarily evil. It’s energy. Might be Thra attempting to rebalance itself. Also, just because Deet was seen sitting on the Skesis throne doesn’t necessarily mean she was there for a bad reason. We don’t know the reason. All we have is a snapshot in time. I definitely look forward to seeing what happens and where the series develops! I enjoyed listening to your thoughts!
I think it is the right crystal shard, bc Aughrah would not say this is a new age, she knows everything she would tell the gelflings its not the right shard if it weren’t. I think Rian does make it and hopefully stops the darkening and him and deet get the ending they deserve. I think season two will make up its own timeline in the process.
I have a few theories here.1 Rian will transfer the darkening from Deet into the garthim, the reason I think this is because in the original movie their eyes are purple but in the show their eyes are blue so perhaps Deet can somehow release the dark energy into them. 2 Rian and Deet are Jen’s parents, I believe that in the following seasons to come Deet and Rian will confess their love for each other and have Jen, plus Rian and Jen look very simular even Jen has the exact same blue tint to his hair like Rian. 3 Brea is Kiara’s mother, I can’t really give enough information other than the girl in Deet’s vision looks a lot like Brea, she has the same large eyes and smooth facial features of Brea so I believe Brea will meet someone and have Brea. 4 finally my theory about Brea being Kiara’s mother might not be true, instead Kiara might be the daughter of Deet and Rian and possibly Jen’s sister! Maybe Rian and Deet took Jen to the mistics and gave Brea Kiara to hide her, kind of like how Luke and Leia were separated for their own good.
A few things. The General who died because of Skeksil (Chamberlin) is named Skekvar while the one in the movie is the Gartham master named SkekUng. I thought they were the same person but you can hear the Skeksis talk about there being 4 Skeksis away from the castle when Skekmal was being treated and Skekung is named among them. Also, it’s my guess that the vision of the crystal being healed by Rian is going to happen but the crystal they have will be lost or replaced with a fake as it was suggested that the Skeksis made fake shards to keep the Gelfling from healing it. The wiki can answer some of the major plot elements.
Another theory I read, which is interesting is that Jen’s clothing in the movie bears the crest of the Stone-in-the-Wood clan (I haven’t checked myself). It could mean, therefore, that Kira is the child of Brea (it sure looks like Brea in Deet’s vision and Kira looks like a Vapra) and Jen is the child of Rian (given how it looks in the vision, Jen looks a lot like Rian and the point about the crest)…
One idea i have had is that the Mystic counterparts of the Skeksis killed in the series this far (not the Archer since we saw him die) will appear in the next season even though their other halves are gone. Remember the General was stabbed with the Duel Glaive (and the crystal shard) and the Collector got blasted by the Darkening. My idea is that these unusual deaths have made the uR-Ru counterparts absorb their Skeksis half without dying, this wakens them up from their normal apathy and they start playing a larger role. However since this is not a true “two-made-one” they are going to suffer side effects, wild mood swings, remembering their former selves atrocities and attitudes etc. The Mystics tend to get overlooked because their pacifist nature means they do not act much, so seeing some start to go bad, or ponder if their reunion will really bring them peace would be a interesting plot.
I really love your insights on all this and completely agree. Its like Marvel comics.. The multiverse! Its the best way to successfully continue a franchise imo and i find it likely that these days that would be more popular. Oh… So maybe Rian with the crystal shard instead of jen fore-shadows a possible universe/outcome for that to happen. Though maybe, he tries but fails… Maybe Deet stops him and gets consumed by the darkening like you predict. I could see that… I was wondering about the general so maybe the emperor uses his staff and the darkening to resurrect him somehow. I was trying to remember i think its 13 skeksies in the beginning? I believe dark crystal 1982 started with 8 or 9. I know 3 died in the series but if the generalcomes back then thats a lot of story they need to cover already! Anyways this was my fav as a young child perusal on repeat 25 yrs ago and i found the series to be better than i wouldve imagined it to be. Im so happy they made it and hope they make more. I also hope they sell physical copies. A series plus movie collection would be amazing. Id pay so much for that right now lol. Anyways… My fav movie and series all time… So creative…
I’m more curious about how the scientist is going to make more garthim when we now know that they’re made by surgically combining a Gruenaks and an arathim together. They have plenty of arathim bodies to use for the base, but according to the scientist, he was under the impression that his kind eliminated the Gruenaks into extinction. And Chamberlain only mentioned the two he kept. So either they’re all gone or they weren’t as thorough in killing the Gruenaks as they thought.
In the Netflix series, the Skeksis general is skekVar. In the film, this role is filled by skekUng. 2 completely different Skeksis. SkekUng is with other Skeksis away from the castle. The others in the castle even mention these Skeksis and the possibility of calling them back to help with the Gelfling uprising.
I have a theory about the General. The General in the series is a completely different Skeksis than the General in the movie, whose title is The Garthim Master in the movie’s novelization, and is named SkekUng. There is a quick line spoken by SkekZok the Ritual Master in the series about calling “the other Skeksis back to the castle” and mentions that SkekUng as a formidable warrior. Also, the series General looks so much different than the movie’s General, which bothered me through the whole series as they got other returning characters like the Chamberlain and the Scientist so spot on. It further solidifies my thought that it is a different Skeksis. I guess we’ll see!
i don’t know if corrupted-deet-on-the-throne is necessarily a hint that she will join the Skeksis. I took it more as a hint that she will/would become a bit of a powerful wildcard, possibly taking up residence in the castle for a time when the Skeksies may have abandoned it, or that she is somehow inside the castle when Jen inserts the crystal shard, and the look she gives is a sort of proud “Good job” or a realization that she’s done her duty in containing the entirety of the Darkening inside herself, and she’s now able to die so the Darkening can be transferred back into the crystal and purified.
Tin foil theory on the vision. The Gelfling on the crystal IS Rian. Notice how the shard doesn’t even go halfway into the hole, leading me to believe its not the true shard. In the ’82 movie Augra has multiple shards and no idea of the right one. So what if something happened to get the true shard and other shards mixed up, or switched, and the shard we see in the vision is a fake one as Rian grabs the wrong one hence why the crystal is still corrupted in the movie. Notice as well in the vision we have Deet sitting on the throne, then Rian failing to heal the crystal, followed by Deet again with her scary face. My theory Rian followed Deet, believes healing the crystal will save her, tries and fails so Deet gets corrupted. To make things easier why not just transfer the Darkening to the crystal. I mean Deet is right there, the Darkening can only be transferred as its energy, and the crystal is already corrupted. This would probably make things worse for everyone but it would depend on how desperate they are to save Deet. Like I said. Tinfoil theory. I’ve watched this series three times already. I watched it when it came out, then I watched the movie, then I watched the series again to try and make connections. I really hope they save Deet. She’s my fave and her and Rian are so cute together! P.S.- Seriously believe that Brea is Kira’s mom, and that baby is Kira. Just throwing my hat into the conspiracy ring.
Regarding the multi-verse theory, I had similar thoughts perusal the series. I thought Aughra’s frequent references to seeing different possibilities and outcomes could be foreshadowing a multiverse arch. I suppose it might just be wishful thinking, I enjoy the characters in the new series and its hard to think that genocide is what awaits them, as depicted from the original movie.
I would say that the mother and child in deets vision is almost definitely brea and kira. Seeing the image of that along with the image of brea side by side, the faces are pretty much identicle, and the clothing looks very vapran. And I suspect that is kira (and not jen) because of the comparison to the scene from kira and jens dreamfast from the original movie, and also because kira is almost definitely a vapran gelfling, based on her appearance, and again, the complexion and clothes of the mother would indicate that she is a vapran.
Well I fully agree that Deet made go the dark path, but the part of the general I don’t think so because of one importand fact that we need to remember: the hereje and his other self said that 18 of them went to thra, in the movie we meet 10 of them in the series we meet new ones ( the badass hunter, the disgusting skesis woman with ulgy nose and the death general) the total of them is 14, leaving 4 leff. Know here is my quastiong what happend to them?? Were are they and what will happend next??
I think when Rian stabbed the general when it took a bit of his life from him doesn’t mean he dead and Maybe after deet gets taken by the darkening Rian and brea might find her and transfer the darkening into the crystal shard and maybe the skeksis is get a hold over the crystal shard and they revive the general and the gelfing take it back and they travel to the mystics and give it to them becuse that was the only place the skeksis is would not look and they can’t fight the mystics becuse if a mystic dies the skeksis die and then you get to see the age of the age of the Were Kira and Jen being born Garth being drained and maybe deet and Rian have a child name Jen and Kylin and brea have a child named Kira they have very identically faces to the characters idk but this is just a theory
i know it could never happen but i wish that during some final battle with the skeksis, Thra just brings all the Gelfling back into the earth. So instead of them being slaughtered and/or drained Thra would spare them that fate and just absorb them back into itself and they become one with Thra again since Thra loves them the most.
I agree that’s probably Kira and her mother, good eye, man! Good eye. 👍 I agree that Deet saw herself possibly turning Evil, and saying, “I won’t!” when she snaps out of her vision. 👍 I agree that it was Jen healing the Dark Crystal with the shard, they just used updated scenes to show the same scene.👍 But, i disagree that there will be multiple dimensions or alternative timelines lol the General died, and maybe somebody else becomes the general by then, or he is somehow brought back. 👍
Skek-Var is not the same Skeksis from the original movie. Skek-Ung, who was briefly mentioned in an episode, becomes the new general in charge of The Garthim. After looking at the still over and over again, I really believe that the baby is Kira and Brea is her mother. Which makes her heir to the All-Maudra crown. That does explain why she was drawn to the throne in the original movie, as well as her telling Jen that she felt like a queen sitting on it in the novelization of the film. With Deet, I am not sure. Perhaps she is the reason why Skek-So, The Emperor, dies in the opening of the movie as a result of unleashing The Darkening on him.
It’s possible that Rian was the one to put the shard into the crystal in Deet’s vision… BUT, the shard has to be put in at the time of the great conjunction. So maybe.. he puts the shard in, but because it’s not the right time, (maybe the darkening goes out of Deet in this time who knows) the crystal isn’t healed and it rejects the shard or something… the skeksis notice and sent the garthim and in the panic where the gelfling (because I think the other gelfling and Aughra are with him, just not seen in the vision) run away, Aughra picks up the shard which is why she has it in her possession in the movie… but that’s just my theory. I am really so curious for the next season! I don’t mind having to wait long, as long as it’ll come out
I think that Brea is the mother of Kira because Kira looks like she is from the Vapra clan and that Jen is at least the son of Rian (I’m not sure whether it’s Deet and Rian but I would love for that to be canon). Also, PLEASE stop pronouncing Rian’s name as “Ryan”. It’s clearly “Ree-an” in the show.
Jim Henson has created a very rich and complex world in DARK crystal, so I hope the movie and this series remain connected plot wise, even if this means that the characters that Ive grown to care about may come to a bad end. But these prequels will ultimately lead to the continuation of the story after the movie D.C., which I believe will lead to an even more satisfying story arc, even with all the potential death of beloved characters. You have to be willing to sacrifice characters, even popular ones, in order to make a story that people are engaged with. A problem that often happens today with sequel and cannon trapped films and franchises, too frightened to really explore a rich and interesting story, like the one we find in The Dark Crystal. Anyways I hope the writers of this series are willing to build a good story, even if it means popular characters are sacrificed.
If it turns out that your hunch that this series will explore an alternative ending or path to that ending… I am down with it no matter what. True art at its finest. Perfect writing, design, graphics and so much more. I thought for sure someone would mess this up somehow but it stayed true to the original storyline as a prequel. I am so impressed and so in love with this new Netflix series. I hope the world sees this and takes away a little piece of the magic that this series has created.
I loved everything about the series and the movie. With my only critique being why does every prequel or sequel these days have to have a secondary title like “age of blah blah” “resisti the blah blah”. This must be a younger generation thing, but these are two different genres the dark crystal is in. Movie and tv are different, they didn’t need to give it an extended title
The general from “Age Of Resistance” is not the same General or “Gathim Master” from the original film. He is “SkekUng” and they even mention his name before the battle. Something to the effect of “SkekUng is a powerful warrior ” when the skeksies are debating on whether or not to call the other skeksies to the castle. I imagine they will also introduce the Slave Master” who was also absent from the series but was seen in the film. Just FYI.
The general that died in the show is different from the one in the movie. The general in the movie is a different skeksis, they even talked about him being away from the castle and needing to summon him back. Two different characters. Just Google the names of the skeksis and you’ll see the general from the movie and the general from the tv show are two completely different characters.
Good job. I loved the series! I thought the whole voice cast was just totally perfect! Another Jason Isaacs role for everyone to love to hate! Since Jim’s untimely passing, all attempted projects were either hit or miss: this masterpiece was a straight out of the park home run! Everyone involved in this definitely did him and his legacy proud! He’s probably up there, grinning from ear to ear! I also felt that the storytelling part with the Heretic was an homage to famous puppeteer Bruce Schwartz, who appeared on the Muppet Show a few times. I can’t wait for the next season! I’m also on board with those who think Rian is most likely Jen’s father and either Brea or Deet is most likely Kira’s mother. I don’t like to speculate too much because I either end up disappointed or spoiling it for myself.
The movie has been a film I’ve rewatched so many times, even upto this day. I’d love to buy the series, as I enjoyed the first season very much, however I would have much preffered to have watched them for the first time in theater, but not going to hold my breath for that lol. I agree on how I also enjoyed how many things from the movie were explained in the show. I liked how the show is “giant”, because in the movie, they describe “giant” events happening in the past, so it all fits well. I do miss the deep scenes from the movie as well as the music. I found the series doesn’t have that as intense as the movie did, it was almost like they were trying to speed things along instead of taking it all in and just enjoy the moment, but that could be a generation thing. Yes, a lot of the content from the series were dark themed, but none of them felt as intensely scary as the movie because the movie had more ‘grace’ in a way, like the way thunder creeps up on a person in real life, while the series felt more superficial, but I guess that’s because most shows don’t have as much time to spare as a movie, but all in all it’s an impressive and tolerable effort. I’m just glad they didn’t fk it up like most others. Their efforts are noticeable, not perfect of course, but noticeable, and I enjoyed perusal it a lot ^_^
This was the biggest downer of a finale ever. I can’t believe I’ve just invested 10 hours of my life and come away thoroughly depressed. Deet is the one character that has kept the whole thing buoyant throughout the Skeksis propaganda campaign and Gelfing holocaust. Her guileless affability, bravery, stoicism, empathy, determination and warmth have been the guiding light in a series full of vivid torture, assassination, psychological torment and ecological disaster. She supported the bereeaved, offered guidance, cared for her little brother and made Hup aspire to be a be a better Podling. Throughout I’ve always been whispering ‘not Deet’ when she’s in threat. So what happens to her? Is she tragically killed saving her friends and gets a tearful but noble death scene? Is she injured and survives but with physical impairment and a more worldly outlook? Erm, no. She actually ingests the wasting, maddening purple blight energy in its purest form. She’s given a kind of radioactive mind warping spirit numbing inflammatory pestilence that destroys anything she comes into contact with. So she selflessy has to wander off in a distracted state to suffer entirely alone, polluting and killing the natural world she so loves and is a part of. Oh, right… whilst all the people she’s just saved fist bump each other and talk about how good they all are. Seriously, WTF writers? I’m all for dramatic twists and mature themes but this is just awful. Maybe season 2 would have rectified something, but we’re not getting it and I can’t stand to see her suffer any more.
Loved the show. Can’t wait for season 2. The general from what I read was SkekVar. But in the movie, that was SkekUng. Two different Skeksis. They did say there were a few still elsewhere in Thra. I don’t think there will be a resurrection for SkekVar. I don’t think it’s possible for the Skeksis or urRu to be resurrected as they are each half of one being not from Thra.
I think the mother in Deet’s vision is Brea, definitely. 😀 And if that’s true, that unfortunately ruins Deet’s chances with Rian… Poor Deet. 🙁 As much as I would love to see an alternate universe in which the Gelfling win, I don’t know, I think I might go with the theory of the Skeksis General being brought back somehow. It seems pretty clear to me that the series will follow the timeline of the film, looks like they’ve done a pretty good job of that so far. But who knows? God, I can’t wait for season 2! LOL
If the Emperor has a small piece of the Crystal in his staff would returning the shard to the Crystal truly make it whole again? Some people have pointed out that the shard in the vision doesn’t appear to fit/work. They believe the shard is one of the imposters we see in the movie but I wonder if it isn’t the true shard but won’t work as there is still another small piece of the Crystal out there in the Emperor’s staff.
Personally I feel conflicted. On the one hand I want this series to match the original timeline, for this would give us one of the darkest endings any series has ever had and it matches the darkness that is at the core of the franchise. After all it is alluded, that the Gelfling are all but extinct by the time the original movie begins and so the end of this series would see the genocide of the Gelfling, ending only in the discovery of Gen by the Mystics and Kira by the podlings, to be the perfect setup for the movie and perfectly explaining why the movie feels so empty. On the other hand, the work they have done in recreating this universe is incredible. They have created an entire universe, that begs to be explored further, an universe filled with intrigue, danger, beauty and charm and that is dark enough to rival even Game of Thrones. That does leave many questions unanswered, but at the same time it could lead to a much larger conflict in which the crystal changes hands over and over as the two sides, Skeksis and Gelflings fight for the future of Thra and their own survival. It is a wonderful and beautiful series, dark, complex and vibrant all the same.
To my mind, this story is already different from the original storyline Why? Look at the difference between the “heretic’s” story of the Urskeks division into the skeksis and and mystics and the comics’s story of the event The way the Heretic describes it, Aughra was asleep before and during the great division The comics however shows her present at the event Aughra even said to Jen she was present there in the original movie Furthermore, the shard was in already Aughra’s hands before this resistance movement The comics show her looking for it in the shaft of the castle after the skeksis cracked the gem. She later brought all the shards she could find, including the actual shard back to her home after the great division So, how did the shard end up there in “Stone in the Wood” in the “dual glave”? As for Deet, you know it’s possible the Darkening may destroy her completely, but not before she finds a way to contain it permanently so it does no further harm to the world. In that way, when Jen heals the crystal, the darkening disappears at the same time, but without him knowing
I’d much rather have them make the minor story sin of resurrecting a single character than retconning an entire chunk of my (and many, many others) childhood by “creating their own timeline.” That’s just disrespect, no matter what you politely choose to call it, or how corporate would scramble to sell it.
Um, that was a totally different General. That General will not be coming back. Nor will the other Skeksis or urRu that died. The General is a title, not a name, and the title gets passed along. The name of the General that died at the hands of the Chamberlain (skekSil) is skekVar. The name of the General that becomes the Garthim-Master and then later the Emperor in the film is skekUng. It gets a bit complicated because there were a total of 18 urSkeks which then became 16 after two died. During the series there are 16 Skeksis and 16 urRu that are the two counterparts of what had once been the urSkeks, split apart by their meddling with the Crystal during the Great Division. During the film there are only 10 of each because another six of them have since died. As their numbers dwindle the remaining urRu and Skeksis adopt different roles and titles. Aughra only returned because her essence was intact inside of skekMal the Hunter and when his counterpart urVa the Hunter died and thus killed skekMal the Hunter, it meant that Aughra’s essence was restored, and because Aughra has a link to Thra, she can create a body anywhere so long as her essence/soul is not depleted.
Anyone here know if the Heretic and Wanderer were alive at the end of this? it almost seemed like that when Hup went back inside and found Lore’s crystal that there was also some sort of crumpled pile of cloth and bone and I was actually wondering if the two might have either killed themselves or one of them passed away from something I forgot about.
I’ve had my FILL of dreary, depressing arcs where a previously “good” character is corrupted into a monster. I guess Harvey Dent’s fate in “The Dark Knight” made the trend popular, but enough’s enough. Jim Henson, if you’re somewhere out there, please use your saintly influence to guide Louis Leterrier away from the path of darkness. Don’t let him turn Deet into a villain; at least, not completely. At the VERY least, allow Rian and Deet’s love for each other to remain incorruptible.
I think in the second season of the dark crystal;I think that Rian might save Deet from the darkening inside her by kissing her with true love kiss cause he is in love with her its the only and I think that Jen in the movie might be Rian and Deets son and Kira might be the daughter of Brea. That is my though.
I believe Deethra would become a kind of “Darth Vader.” Now, I haven’t looked through all of the comments on your article, but you must know by now that SkekUng is not the same Skeksis General! Shame on you for ever even considering that! Anyway, Deethra would possibly lead the Garthim and Gelthim towards the Skeksis, and Rian would most likely purify her by using the True Shard as a weapon against her. This would be a truly powerful and “Shakespearean” manuever against a subjugated Gelfling! That would be exceptionally Powerful Stuff! Storywise, it is TASTY! In a way, it would lift this story into the level of being Literature PROPER! Now THAT is quite EXCITING! Shivers all around!
i’m not sure that deet would join the skeksis or rule them i think she will just cast herself away to the castle of the crystal so she won’t infect anymore thra, if you witnessed in episode 10 when rian followed her and saw her corrupted by the darkening she turned away without saying a word then everything in her way was infected, so i think she just want to protect the others and may be she will be the vilain trying to do that; however it will be a sad story if it end up by rian perusal deet getting consumed entirely by the darkening and end up dying.
do wonder if the darkening is a minor retcon and pull from the sequel comics to the film. to ppl yes a comic that takes place 100 years later from the film exists and came out around 2017. its still interesting read but some bs like how the sketsis and urrus return despite they merged into the their original selves and return to their world at end of film but comic says they were imrpison DESPITE we see them leave and return to their world.) note the sequel comic was originally a just a leftover draft by jim henson himself. so the sequel comic isnt fully canon. plus beginning of this series when they tell how sketsis offered aughra the observatory in the 2015 comic called creation myths its told differently by her son (the son still not sure if retcon out or still exists) where urseks when they arrived at first conjuction (theres three. first is when they arrived, second is crystal damaged and the sketsis/urrus were born, last one is when jen repaired the crystal.) they wish to share knowledge to her and the gelflings wit hthem teaching gelfings to read and write when they were in their tribal years. so that party maybe retcon. i said maybe cause at second conjuction aughra mind was damaged and started developing amnesia a bit where she slowly forgot her son and the sketsis slowly lie to her so that could explain why beginning of show narrator said sketsis created and offer the observatory to her. little bit back to beginning. so the comic sequel mentions a blight exists where the land becomes corrupted.
Spoiler Talk obviously. If you’ve not seen the 1982 film and the end of Season 1. Read on if you wish but you’ve been warned. I think it’s obvious Rian and Brea are Jen’s parents… I guess they could be Kira’s parents instead, either way it works. If Deet doesn’t die by the end of tDC:AoR then she could be the main antagonist for a potential sequal to the 1982 film. Jen and Kira (or someone else) has the quest to cleanse Thra of what remains of the Darkening, to do so they have to either save and cure Deet who is now the mad Dark Gelfling Sorceress Queen… or kill her.
His name is pronounced “Ree-AN”, not “Ryan”. And you are confusing SkekVar (the “General” who is killed by Chamberlain in the series) with SkekUng (the “General/Garthim Master” who becomes Emperor in the movie). “General” is just a title. They are NOT the same character, it is NOT an alternate timeline. Please don’t confuse your viewers.
I actually want to point out something, you may want to correct yourself when you said that the same general is alive in the movie, I don’t believe it’s true. If you compare them together their faces are very different so the general in the movie was probably a replacement after the events of The Age of Resistance.
I usually dont do theories because its for nerds and a waste of time. And Im pretty sure this is 100% wrong. Remember when Deet takes a look at da future. Fans said that in one of the scenes it has Rian healing the crystal. I know that its Jen that completely heals it, but hold on a sec. Looking back at the movie the emperor’s scepter is different. It does not have a shard when hes in his death bed. Even in the books in the emperors youth the shard is not there. In the series, Age of Resistance, its there and if I remember right he said that he uses the shard to control the darkening. That shard is part of the crystal, and when the crystal craked it did not just break into one little piece, but into two. Rian semi succeed in healing the crystal by using a bit of the shard from the scepter. Jen fully heals it by using the crystal from the dual glave. And im pretty sure its from the dual glave cause its bigger than the shard of the scepter. Thats it. Simple. I see these wild theories from other people. They say how that scene with Rian symbolizes “yada yada yada.” Just dont go so hard into it. God!!!!!
That general is not the general in the movie. If you know the story the first general dies.. If you listen to the skeksi with the glasses he says there are other Skekies out there. They get another general who is which you see in the movie. Yes brea is the mother of Kira. That’s why augra gives herself in exchange for the 3 girls to be released. . Augra even tells brea that she has much to do augra knows she is the mother…. this is only the beginning. Yes the gelflings did win, but they all eventually die.
I couldn’t get past the opening ten minutes because of the visuals. Oh an the script. That deviated so roughly from the gelfling and the skesis being two parts of a whole that also included the dark crystal and the world on which they lived. In the first ten minutes the series entirely missed the point. It would be like if Fern Gully was from the point hexus and his viewpoint was the one that saved the most lives and the earth. Oh wait. This is being produced by corporate interests.
I LOVED THE DARK CRYSTAL 😂I hope they won’t be extinct 😐cause if they do I’m gonna be so mad😡 cause those guy’s are my New favorite characters I Don’t want them to die 😢 my most favorite character is Deet 😃I LOVE Deet even though she’s infected with the Darkening I still love her I bet that Rian and Deet will be together 😄 sorry and plus. …😲 Brea has a child I know that’s Brea I can feel it I can freaken feel it 😅 sorry again I gonna go bye
I would hate it if they did an alternate timeline. I know they want to subvert expirations and all, but that’s why most prequels suck. You either stick to the story that everyone knows the ending already, or you completely change it and say it’s alt timeline. I wish they had gone forward instead. Followed the comics or something like that anyway.
I think they are making their own timeline as the movie felt like it was missing so much. Having a series means they can really flesh out the scenes, characters and everything else! I mean, in the original movie, they had a full scene of the skeksis sat eating, which had no real input to the movie, only that trying to make puppets eat is messy work. Even as I kid I saw no use for the scene and it was wasted film. Netflix series is much better by far
I don’t think she will be corrupted too badly at least not for too long I think Rian will find her and help her and she and him are going to have a baby and it’s going to turn out to be Jen and Brea is going to have a baby with gelfling that gave her a ride on the flying Stingray creature which will be Kira and then they’re going to hide their babies then they’re going to go hide in the caves of grot because Rian tells Deet he wants her to take him back to grot while shes making smoke bombs
