Should I First Use Mystic Hair Coloring And Then Bleach?

Bleaching and dyeing hair on the same day can cause significant damage to the hair, so it is best to give it a break after bleaching to heal and regain its shine. Colorists are careful not to leave in any hair lightening products for too long or use high volume developers that can cause damage. If you are doing a color retouch, only apply the bleach to the area of regrowth and try to avoid excessive overlapping.

To get bleached and damage-free hair at home, make the right preparations by mixing a lightening agent with a developer like hydrogen peroxide to open the cuticle and pull pigment out of the hair. Section the hair into four quadrants and apply the bleach to smaller segments within each section. It is generally recommended to bleach highlights first before applying a dark dye, as the bleach will lighten the hair and create a base for the dye.

You can do the same day, but only semi or demi permanent color on bleached or color treated hair. First decide how many levels you need to lift your client’s hair by, then use bleach first, then tone. Before rinsing the color, sprinkle a little water on your hair and massage your hair and scalp for a few seconds, including around your hairline.

To dye your hair any custom color at home, you will most likely need to bleach your hair first to decolorize your hair. If you have very pale blonde hair naturally and are dyeing, start applying color from the bottom section, starting from the neck, continuing at the crown, and working your way through to the front. Hair bleach is best applied on dry, unwashed hair, as it contains natural hair oils that help protect the hair during the bleaching process.

What happens when you put hair dye on bleached hair?

Bleach hair can be difficult to dye due to its natural pigments being stripped, resulting in darker results. It may be necessary to use a protein filler and consult a stylist for the right color and products. If using an at-home kit, ensure you are satisfied with the color and read the instructions carefully. Once the base color is back to an even, darker shade, you can continue to evolve your look with new colors.

However, hair health may not be at its best after two intense colouring rounds. It is recommended to give your hair a break and receive proper care, such as moisturizing hair masks and limiting heat styling exposure, to allow it to recover.

Can you use hair color remover after bleach?

The color remover is ineffective in removing bleached hair because it only lifts out artificial color molecules that are darker than the individual’s natural shade. This is because bleaching has already removed those molecules.

Can I bleach over dyed hair?

Bleaching is a simple method to lighten colored hair at home, especially for those with previously colored tresses. It does not lift color, but it plumps up hair shafts, giving the appearance of fuller, thicker hair. To prepare your hair, use a deep conditioning treatment like ULTRA BOND™ No. 2+ Deep Treatment or ULTRA BOND (™) Overnight R and R Leave In Treatment. Lay off hot tools, avoid shampooing and conditioning two to three days before lightening, and conduct a strand test to perfect processing time and see how your hair and scalp react to the lightener. Gather your supplies well-organized and understand the products to avoid mistakes. If you have any pre-bleaching questions, consult a professional for assistance.

How to bleach hair before coloring?

To repair bleached hair, divide dry, unwashed hair into four sections and apply the bleach mixture evenly, starting one inch down from the roots. Sweep the bleach onto the roots last. Allow the bleach to sit for a certain amount of time to avoid overprocessing, as some formulas may work faster or slower. Refer to the instruction label for specific directions and set a timer.

After washing the bleach, shampoo your hair with lukewarm water to remove any remaining bleach. Some kits come with an extra nourishing conditioner, but L’Oréal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free Bond Strengthening Conditioner can be used to strengthen hair from the inside out. This fortifying line is perfect for repairing bleached locks.

Should I bleach my hair before dying red?

To achieve a bright red hair color, you don’t need to bleach your hair, but you might need to lift your current shade using a permanent hair color. Before choosing your desired red color, check your current shade. For dark hair, choose a permanent shade two levels lighter than your natural shade, or try Natural Instincts Bold shades. For light hair, start with a shade closer to your natural color, such as Nice’n Easy 8R Medium Reddish Blonde. You can always choose to go a few shades darker next time. Before applying your color, it’s recommended to do an allergy test, even if you’ve colored your hair before.

How long should I wait to bleach and dye my hair again?

The recommended waiting time for a color treatment is 4-6 weeks, as this is generally enough to reduce hair damage risk. Consult a hairdresser or stylist if possible to ensure the best treatment for your hair. The frequency of hair coloring depends on your natural hair type, color, and the shade you are changing to. Hair grows about half an inch per month, so those with faster hair growth may require more frequent coloration. Darker hair dyeing to lighter colors may also require more attention to avoid their natural color showing through at the roots.

Why do we bleach hair before coloring?

The retention of color in bleached hair is superior to that of natural darker hair, which may be dyed but will appear as a tint on top of the natural color. This phenomenon is analogous to the process of painting with watercolors, wherein the dye color remains discernible.

Can you use hair dye right after bleaching?

The use of bleach can result in uneven or intense hair coloration due to the porous nature of the hair strands, which absorb the dye at a faster rate. It is recommended that a minimum of 48 hours be allowed to elapse before dyeing in order to achieve optimal results. In the event that the recommended waiting period is not feasible, it is advisable to exercise additional caution during the application of the dye and to conduct a strand test prior to commencing. Through the application of patience and care, the objective of achieving a beautiful and long-lasting hair color can be accomplished.

Is it safe to bleach and dye hair in the same day?

Hair dyeing in a salon typically involves a double process, which takes multiple days to complete. Bleaching and dyeing in a single day is not recommended and can cause additional damage. Box hair dye is less strong but should be re-dyed at least two weeks before re-dyeing. However, it’s not professionally applied, making it more susceptible to user error. If you’re at home, read the instructions carefully for a smooth dyeing experience.

Should I bleach or dye my hair first?

If you have never colored your hair and want it to be a few shades lighter than your natural color, you can use permanent color with a higher developer to bump your level up a few shades. Your hair should not need to be bleached before coloring. Before starting any hair color process, assess the condition and health of your hair. If your hair has been colored or bleached several times in the past year to 18 months, wait until it has had more time to heal from the stress.

If your hair is experiencing issues like frizziness, dryness, or breakage, wait or leave the bleaching to a professional colorist. They can assess your hair’s ability to handle the bleaching process without causing damage.

  • So let me start by saying I am 43 and have been dying my hair for 30 years. For the last 20 I have been doing it in different colors like blue, pink, purple and every other color there is. I was doing it before it was cool. hehe Anyway, I am about 90 percent grey and got my first grey hairs at 18 (pretty sure its cause I was pregnant thanks kids hehe). So I decided a couple years ago I would just dye it to grey/silver so when my hair grew back in naturally it wouldnt look so odd. I tried a few different times with having horrible results. I saw your article yesterday and said what the heck I havent tried this yet let me get everything Kristi is saying and we shall try it. Well let me tell you its perfect. It is a beautiful grey/silver color. Its really stunning and I wanted to tell you thank you so much. Now I have been wondering if I should put a couple streaks of pink. lol Guess its hard getting away from the fun colors when you been doing it for 20 yrs. I was worried it would make me look my age having this hair since I typically look 10 to 15 years younger than what I am but my husband said last night that the grey not only looked really good but it was extremely sexy and didnt make me look any older than having the fun colored hair. I came to work this morning and was hoping other people would think the same thing and it wasnt just my husband being a wonderful loving man. To my surprise everyone so far has giving compliments and says they agree with my husband that I still look like I’m in my late 20’s early 30’s.

  • Awesome tutorial! I have spent thousands of dollars over the past 4 years at salons trying to get this look, never once have I been satisfied. I made the plunge today and went to Sally beauty. It turned out wonderfully, a beautiful slate grey, although I should of bleached right to my roots prior to this, I have 2 inch roots that are golden brown in colour. I have extremely thick hair so I ended up using a full bottle of t14 and t050. Thank you so much for making this article!

  • “I absolutely love Zala products! I have purchased a 5 pc clip in set from them a couple of months ago, and I was so happy with the product that I bought a thick piece clip in as well last week that is a little shorter to add volume to my hair instead of length! Not only are the products amazing, healthy human hair that are easy to care for and style, but the colour range is excellent, and the shipping time is quick! Couldn’t recommend this company more! I am so in love with it. “

  • Thank you SO much for this article. My 14yo has been wanting to try grey hair and I’ve been racking my brain and researching how to make that happen for her. We’re lucky enough that our Sally’s carries T050. I was wondering if you applied it to your hair while it was damp or if you dried it first? The toner directions on Wella’s site say towel-dried hair, but I don’t know if the color would deposit better on dry hair.

  • this is a fantastic article extremely helpful and I loved the tip of using wella t14 prior to 050. Haven’t seen that in any other vid and it’s a great tip. your hair and make up look fabulous hope I can get mine to look half as great. and I love the effect the darker blonde in your ends made in the finished look. it’s like ombre

  • This grey hair struggle is SO REAL! I can’t wait to try what seems to be the magic formula. My hairdresser uses Pravana Vivids and honestly it fades after about 3 washes and then I’m just left with blonde. uggh!! Quick question: does this wella tend to fade fast? are you using anything special to keep it from fading as fast?

  • Hi Kristi, I’m so so thankful for this article!!! I recently let my hair dye from a toffee brown to a (darker) grey and I had similar problems as you had. After the first time bleaching and dyeing it looked almost perfect (my profile photo was shot directly after) but there were still some renitent strands in the lenght which lost the color very quickly. So I got bleached and dyed all ends again (this time with olaplex). Everything worked out pretty fine and I was then looking for a product to maintain the grey color. After perusal hundreds of YouTube articles I bought the Clairol Shimmer Lights Shampoo. But what it did, it took out all the grey from my ends! So I was blonde again! Since then I’ve been using the Roux Fanci Full Rinse (silver lining) after each washing. It works but it is a hassle! After perusal your ‘Grey Hair article’, I instantly ordered the Wella 050 and it arrived yesterday. Yay! Now I just need to buy a developer to start it by myself. I hope it’s gonna work out as it does on your hair… Just in case you have any plus advice which isn’t mentioned in the article, it would be great. Thank you so much! Corinna from Hamburg, Germany

  • Holy shit thank you for sharing this! I’ve literally done the same things that you did prior to the 050 “additive” and it’s always friggin brown/gold! Thanks for posting this, you’re hilarious and I love that you don’t go overboard with over explaining shit that none of us care about, you just go right in to telling us how you got your result. Right on!

  • Hey Kristi! Thank you sharing this article! I got my grey hair done at the salon before and got it touch up last Saturday but hairdresser messed my hair up and turned out the brownish grey! Do you think I can use the T14 toner to put it back to grey or do I have to use T14 and 050? Thank you so much in advance!

  • Girl can u imagine ur article is life saver. This is the exact color i m looking for in 2019 itself 😬 and i went from all the way dark black to somewhat blonde now and right now my hair is quite close to golden blonde and my hair dresser wants me to have one more sitting to get platinum blonde before she can get me silver grey but i ve told her i do not want silver so i want exactly like urs want to keep that dark cool tone to my hair so do u think I should use the exact technique as u to achieve this dark grey hair pls help me out.

  • I am soooooooo glad you did this article. I am 37 and I am mostly white in the front and salt and pepper in the back. I dyed my hair blonde and have been blonde for 2 years but I want to grow out my natural hair and don’t want it to look funky or chop off all my hair. I did the wella t14 and it did tone down the gold in my hair but I want what you have 😉. I will be going tomorrow to get the color. Thank you ❤️

  • This is great!! I wish I had seen your tutorial first. I used T18 instead of 14 and added half a bottle of the 050 to it. I used 10 vol, so as just to front is ok, but the back seems like it didn’t grab the toner at all, still seems a little beige. Do you recommend I start over using your method, and one question – did you put the 050 over the T14 or rinse the T14 out first and then apply the 050? Thanks in advance and great job!!!!!!

  • yes the Wella 050 works perfect! the first time I used it in did as on the back of the box. I was disappointed and left it sitting under my sink for a few months. So a few days ago desperate I said f@#k it! I poured it in the bowl just as u said and BAM! 25mins my hair was grey🤗😄😆😃FINALLY!!!! I was so happy but it does have some green under tone to it in fluorescent lighting. I think it’s because I didn’t tone it out with the T14 like I should have. I was being impatient but now know what to do for next time, Thanks…😉🖒You look Great Girl!

  • Holy mug you’re the second article with way better advice than the chicks at Sally’s (I know they’re not pros so I’m thinking of getting a job there cause I’ve messed with my hair a lot haha). My question is: Did it dry your hair a little? Cause I’ve seen someone mixing it but got lighter results vs you got cool ass grey. But before toning and adding just wanted to prep.

  • I colour my hair with 050 have been doing it for a few months now. Hard colour to maintain but when you find the right products it’s easy, fanci full in true steel is brilliant & a really blue toner, not purple a blue toner! Directions silver toner it’s dark blue an keeps the colour looking fresh! It’s a gorgeous colour I love it! Xxx

  • thanks so much for this. I tried dying my hair silver a couple months ago with the pravana silver and was so excited but then it turned out more blue that silver and only took to one side of my head, I was so disappointed but then I found your article and decided to try this. I did it last night and omg my hair is such a pretty shade of gunmetal silver so really, thank you so so so much for posting this!

  • I have been waiting for someone to finally specify between silver and gray hair I’ve been looking for the perfect gray gunmetal hair and I am so happy that I came across your website. thank you so much now I know what I will have to do in order to achieve this. I also had a question if you had thick fine or thin hair xo

  • Thank you so much for this article Kristi!! I did exactly what you did and I actually ended up getting my hair more grey than my hairstylist did, so now I don’t have to pay a ton of money just to go get my hair toned that will last until one wash. For me, this toner lasted for about 5 or 6 washes and there was still quite a bit of ashy tone left to my hair.

  • Cooling violet toner is what I use. I’m 15 now and have been dyeing my hair myself since I was like 11 or 12 and when I was 13 going on 14, I decided to try and go silver from purple-pink hair. Not a good idea since I waited long enough till it was a very pale pink with some purple in the root area, but since I dye my hair all the time and I wasn’t expecting having to bleach my hair as many times as I did and my mom refusing to buy me a lower developer I fried the Fuck out of my hair. The bleach didn’t work in my favor, and then using the toner I literally fried my hair. It was awful. I had already just cut my hair short so I had to cut it even shorter. Worst year of my life. I’m 15 now and my hair is still recovering from it, and is still sort of damaged, but in a way that’s reasonable for someone who changed their hair color every other month. The toner I originally used was the t14 cool ash blonde, because I had seen some article tutorials on people using it and it turned their hair a gorgeous silver. Well, it literally turned it like an off grey brown color. I started with really pale blonde hair too. So I was quite upset. Ended up trying several times and trying to look for some hair stylist help but then I gave up and decided to just go red. So I decided to buy the cooling violet toner to change it before going a fire truck red so it wouldn’t be as orangey. Well I left the toner on a little longer than usually and low and behold I finally got my grey color… But since I just got my red it was a little late for that so I just said screw it, and went for the red and it turned out lovely (it was wildfire by manic panic).

  • Ok so I did bleach my hair to a good blonde (not platinum) used T050 and my hair still looks blondy- browny-orangy something. Some of the strands have picked the grey perfectly but the whole color has become patchy. Do you recommend doing it again? Or I dye my hair grey and thn tone? What would u suggest?

  • I just want to make sure I got the steps right: you got it to a workable light blonde then use 2:1 developer and Wella 050 to get to the darker grey/silver that you have? Did you see your hair fading quickly after? How frequently did you wash your hair? Did you see it turning any green/blue colors over time? I’ve had some run-ins with other color products (like your suggested maintenance from your stylist) and these were issues I faced. I’m looking for the best product solution.

  • Is there a developer that doesn’t have peroxide? All the Wella instructions etc suggest Wellaxocon or whatever it is 20 vol with the toners, but I’ve used this to bleach my hair with the Blondor… If I do this with toner will it damage it or is there a different developer I can get that will work with the Color Charm and the additive? Ugh confusion.

  • I know it’s a vitamin but it can be very damaging to your hair.too much of proteins& whatnots in your hair. may be shocking to see how dry it looked after the vitamin c capsules but it’s bound to happen. I’m so glad to run across this perusal hair dying articles I’m doin mine grey finally. Been waiting almost 5yrs for this

  • Hello, I wanted to ask u this my hair are not that much golden like yours u begin with i have like brassy orange hair going on since I bleached them from very dark hair, can i still put 050 to get dark grey hair, i m not worried about getting silver hair dark grey would work for me so can i put this u think it will work? Pls

  • This came out soo good, i did it myself after trying soo many different ways and it worked well! BUT… it was soo hard to maintain..after 3 days it was fading and the yellow started coming through. If you have any tips, let us know….. i tried re toning and it just messed with the color too much. But great article!!! Thanks!!

  • I love that you jumped right in and started the info, told which toners you used, and volume. And I love the color you ended up with! I was doing gray for about a year, and it was s so hard to get it and keep it, with the new, brunette growth. Ugh… anyway, I’ve always used t14 for mine, but I’m out and only have a tiny bit left of 050, and needed to find on YouTube if it’s blue based, and if it works good to tone, plus a touch of gray. But I thought when I added it before to color with regular color, it went warm. ? I can’t recall exactly. But I love the cool toned color you got.

  • Hey there! I love the grey color you have, for a few months I’ve been wanting to get either a silver/platinum blonde color, so I bought the Manic Panic 30 Volume bleach kit, and then I got the Extreme platinum hair dye. My hair was originally medium brown with the bottom tips looking blondish due to hair color a year ago. My hair is shoulder length now, and so I did the bleach, with LOTS of brown and red tones in my hair. After a few days (since my hair wasn’t as fried) I used the extreme platinum dye then I got strawberry blonde hair. With the roots looking more platinum. It’s alright but when I get the chance I like to dye it a silver/ or a grey color like what you have. I’m asking for what do you suggest I should use for my strawberry blonde hair? Please and Thank you!

  • Wella T18 mixed 050 turned my hair is beautiful light strawberry blonde shade, I went back and did a Wella T14 mixed with 050 and now I have a light sandy blonde with grey undertone which I do like but it’s not what I want and this is the first article that I saw anybody say to use the whole 050 instead of just capfuls. so I will be doing this today . p.s. my hair was a dark black brown a week and a half ago I bleached it, did nothing but coconut oil for a week and then did the second bleach three days ago my hair is amazingly healthy still and my curl pattern is still intact, ladies please use coconut oil on you’re bleaching

  • I just want to say thank you so much for this article!! I’ve been looking for a article on how to do this forever. Everyone else mixed the a few capfuls of the 050 with t18/t14 and got grey but when I did it it just toned my hair and made it slightly grey but not dark like I wanted. (It looks white/silver in the sun. My hair was a pale ash blonde beforehand. All the other articles I watched said just 050 alone wouldn’t work or would turn my hair black. I love your color and this is exactly what I’ve been trying to get so I’m going to just take the leap and try it tonight!

  • This is a great article thank you for posting 🙂 and your hair color is amazing!!! I recently had my hair dyed silver at a salon.. Ive only washed it twice and the silver is almost all gone 🙁 my question is if go to Sally’s and use everything you used will it fade out as fast?? Im really want the silver to last longer in my hair I’m hoping these wella products will do the trick 🙂

  • I know this article is a little “old” but I used the Wella 050 after I bleached my hair and it turned out AMAZING, so thank you!! But out of curiousity, can anyone tell me about touching it up. Am I going to have to do a quick bleach bath and completely redo the gray, or do you think it will work if I use the 050 over the faded still somewhat “silvery” hair?
