Just a little context: So pretty much planeswalkers were godlike beings that can travel across the multiverse onto different planes. Nicol Bolas is the dragon planeswalker that you see in this article, one of the elder dragons who also happens to be a planeswalker (Double OP). A lot of books later (like literally like 20 books later), an event called the Mending happened that had planeswalkers sacrificing their planeswalkers spark to mend rifts in the multiverse that were caused by them jumping around reality a bit too hard. During the Mending, it weakened all existing and future planeswalker sparks everywhere, rending these gods into simply gifted wizards. Liliana is a necromancer and a planeswalker from the new generation who, centuries ago, made a pact with demons to gain immortality, since planeswalkers were no longer godlike. Unenthusiastic about being a servant to the demons, she tries to break the pact while keeping the immortality by killing all the demons who signed the pact, but here’s the twist, when the last demon dies there’s a fine print that transfers the pact to NICOL BOLAS. During this time Nicol Bolas has been waging a war against numerous planeswalkers, trying to regain his former godlike spark since the Mending. The roster includes a plethora of great characters, but our main protagonists in the recent books are the Gatewatch, a group of planeswalkers sworn to protect the multiverse against the biggest threats led by Gideon Jura who you can see getting his ass pummeled.
I hope the people behind this trailer see all the love of it since its launch. The animations, the choice of music, the timing, writing of the script and Liliana’s scream – These people did an awesome job. What a wild ride of emotions they managed to put into three minutes, especially the climax at the end!
I’ve watched this an unhealthy number of times. Liliana is my favorite Planeswalker and necromancer in general fantasy. She’s devastatingly beautiful, her power is her own, and she’s ambitious enough to make deals with demons to preserve that beauty while having the audacity to destroy them to free herself from the contract (or so she thought). At it’s core, the story of Liliana Vess is a tale of an amoral, power hungry, objectively bad person learning the value of sacrifice and service before self, becoming a good person. Gideon’s sacrifice changes Liliana forever. “Is it better to be born good or to overcome one’s own evil nature through great effort?” – Party Snax
I love this. I don’t know jack about MTG, the game, its characters, its lore and generally don’t GAF about it. But this is so well done I come back and watch it every so often. The way the animators managed to tell a story with no dialogue and limited CGI human animation… It’s a masterpiece of show, don’t tell many movies would envy.
Easily one of the most beautiful digital female faces ever rendered. The artists responsible for Liliana’s face should get a bonus. A gorgeous trailer overall with perfect music. I wish the talent behind this trailer would be commissioned for a full movie in the MTG universe. Man would that be legendary.
Liliana has always been an interesting pick for the poster child of black. Inherently she has been a character who has done whatever it takes to amass the power to prevent what happend to her family, and in doing so has done considerably more and more heinous acts. All in the name of her freedom. Now that her mission has been ‘completed’ and now her leash is tighter than ever from Bolas’ claws, she now digs deep into a quality that is themetically integral to black: Self-Sacrifice. Paying life as a resource has always been a part of black as a color and now it’s being well represented with Liliana’s likely final act in a blaze of glory, fighting for the freedom she has always wanted, the power to protect her friends.
This…this was a hell of an epic trailer. Standard was still strong, sets and additionals were releasing at a reasonable pace, lockdowns didn’t happen, and Hasbro’s wasn’t trying to overmilk the cash cow. This is the reminder of how magic should be, impressive storylines with well thought-out sets. It’s disheartening seeing what’s come of the game in the last few years. I’m keeping a sliver of hope that WoTC will make things right with the community and not try to brush off the people that make this game great (like what was done at the ‘fireside’). Please wizards, bring back the old feel that I enjoyed as a kid (7th edition) and don’t oversaturate the market nor target specific formats per set. Secret lairs and masters/jumpstart sets are great but you’re releasing them too quickly to appeal to a majority crowd of people that probably don’t even play the game much. This game has helped me with a lot emotionally due to the GATHERING portion. Don’t kill the GATHERING in MtG. Please acknowledge your customers concerns and make things right.
When you want to understand whats happening in this trailen you must know Lilianas story. Long time ago Liliana made a pact with Nicol Bolas which would give her immortality and eternal beauty. I mean Liliana is probably a few 100years older than Gideon. Her part of this contract would be whenever Bolas would return she should be the one who commands his army of undead warriors (the dreadhorde). This contract with Bolas can be seen within the lines all over Lilianas body and now they shine brighter than ever because Bolas has returned gaining more and more power. Now unfortunately Bolas has returned and Liliana has to fulfill the contract if she wants to stay alive. We can see her leading the dreadhord thorwards Ravnica killing every living Planeswalker around. 0:57 We can clearly see Liliana questioning her actions but she goes on because she has no other choice. 1:20 Then she sees two youg childres again (older sister and younger brother). This gives her some seriouse flashbacks to her past. Because when Liliana was a child he also had a younger brother. When they were children they had to face war together and unfortunately her little brother died during this events. Liliana couldnt protect her brother and thats why she started doing all this necromancy stuff. This event should have become the legacy of Lilianas later years. 2:04 At this moment Liliana loses it. She raises her Hand and remembers the Oath she has sworn along side the other Planeswalkers to protect the innocent and fight the evil no matter what is costs.
I love the fact that Liliana personifies the essence of black’s values in the MTG color pie. Her commitment to manifest her destiny may have led to her dark bargains with infernal beings; and she has done terrible things to attain power. Yet in this trailer she shows that black is a lot more complex than the selfish pursuit of self-interest. It’s not evil. Black may refuse moral convention for the sake of ambition, but not because it lacks empathy. Liliana sees the suffering that Bolas inflicts on others, using her as the very tool to complete his master plan. She realizes that she is under his control. She rebels and remembers the oath that she has to fulfill. In a clever way, this trailer demonstrates that black is very much capable of self-sacrifice.
There really couldn’t have been a more apt and powerful song to put this to. Liliana coerced, manipulated, bullied and betrayed absolutely everyone she could to remove the contact-holding demons and be free… only to realize she was making herself the perfect slave, doing exactly what Bolas wanted her to do, and giving him a general worthy of his enhanced undead, spark-hunting army. This song so beautifully encapsulates her dire situation, and the sheer amount of hopelessness she must have felt when she heard Bolas say “Your contact is in default. You belong to me now. Serve, or die.”
I remember around Zendikar and scars when everyone was starting to get annoyed that Bolas was getting too much attention, even in blocks that weren’t supposed to be about him. Wizards was playing the long game. They put the work in and Bolas has really earned “Multiversal big bad” over the years. And here we are.
“When you rule by fear, your greatest weakness is one who’s no longer afraid.” “The moment Liliana defied Nicol Bolas, her contract was broken, and her life was forfeit. But she was free to choose her fate, and she decided it was worth the price.” “To Liliana’s surprise, the cost of betraying Bolas did not fall on her.” “Liliana whispered to whatever consciousness Oketra and Bontu had left. ‘You are the gods. He is the usurper. You know what to do.'” “His triumph came not from victory over his enemies, but from the salvation of those who survived.” “Her triumph came not from escaping her death, but in claiming her independence.” “Kytheon had known war every day of his life. Now he finally knew peace.” … You know, as much as Gideon and Lili aren’t my favorite of the Gatewatch, let alone planeswalkers, WotC still managed to wrench my heart in two with this set and its story. Even if the book hadn’t released and we only knew what we did from the flavor text, it would have still been a pretty emotional thing. I’m interested into what codename “Archery” will bring us in terms of story, since from what I remember we won’t be focusing so much on the Gatewatch crew specifically for a while. New plane? Another return to an old plane? Perhaps a multi-planar set? New characters? I’m excited, to say the least.
Okay, but can we talk about that shot with the Eternals storming up the steps towards Bolas? It did a great job of making the conflict seem a lot less one-sided. Also, I really like this being something of a turning point against Bolas. He may be a master schemer, but it’s been demonstrated on multiple occasions that his biggest weaknesses are his arrogance and his inability to plan around selfless behavior. The idea of self-sacrifice is something so foreign to Bolas that he often entirely fails to consider it as a possible option for his enemies to take – he simply can’t imagine anyone going that far without expecting to gain from it. This makes sense, given that self-sacrifice is primarily in White, and one of the Planeswalkers who most successfully manages to oppose Bolas is Ajani, whose cards often have a self-sacrificing theme, and whose colors are the exact opposite of Bolas’.
This trailer makes me so emotional. I wish they would have shown the Zombified gods too, but it was still amazing. They did so good and made Liliana look almost exactly like she does on the cards. The dread-horde and Nicol Bolas looked awesome. Replays the story perfectly, so much so I wish that they had added Gideon’s sacrifice as it was a huge deal to me at least. I feel like it would give him the respect he deserves for his compassion, bravery, and boldness. Great effects also on Lily’s Necro-magic.
This is the essence of a good trailer. Show. Don’t tell. You cut out the goofball, badly voice acted, narrated, sit on uncles lap and let me tell you a story trailers and made the best one you’ve ever made instead. You made viewers say “Wait, what does this mean? Show me more!” instead of “Oh, that’s what the next expansion is about…” Great work! More of this. Less of the past.
This is a story they’ve been setting up for several years, every single set having some factor to what’s going down in this set. Minor details like the forming of the Gatewatch on Zendikar, to the almost Infinity War style of collecting all the tools Bolas needed. Zombie warriors from Amonkhet, the Immortal Sun on Ixalan, and the Planar Bridge on Kaladesh.
As a huge fan of Liliana, this article is absolutely perfect. Here’s my deck list for my tier black Liliana deck This took me a little under 2 years to complete. War of the Spark is going to be one hell of a heroic narrative. Powerful sacrfice is rampant and between this trailer and some of the spoiled card flavour I’ve never felt the struggle vs Bolas was quite so real ever before. Kudos, Wizards, for this is a for-fans set and plot in the best kind of way. This is the worthy culmination of all those strings you wove up til now. I hope it plays out as good as it looks.
And just like that, I forgot about MCU’s Spider-Man dissolving into dust. Liliana turning to dust…this meant something. Just…wow…! Finally, she learned what her immortality and her life meant: Nothing. She had stolen it all from others. Now, she was ready to give it all up to do the right thing. She knows she will die defying the dragon, but she will do it anyway, the one act of true heroism pulled out of the ashes!
You know after perusal this more then a few times, I see that this scene symbolizes her internal struggle within herself. She sees who she was, and then what she is doing, which is going against who she really is. She decides to confront the part of her that had protected her in the past, but which is no longer serving her true self. Doing so takes almost everything from her, as she had made it this far, because of this part of herself. But she made the choice to let go of it to become more.
That trailer makes me playing the online game even more. This trailer makes me badly wanna buy the new cards in real even more. This trailer makes me wanna study the lore behind magic even more. This trailer makes me wanna buy the new book there coming out. That trailer keeps me smashing that replay button This trailer makes me addicted to MAGIC xD
Woah, I don’t even play magic, and yet I got chills! Edit: I’ve just watched an hour-long summary of the lore, and now I’m just mindblown by the quality of the story and world-building. HOW THE HELL IS THIS NOT MAINSTREAM YET?! this is most definitely better written than GoT, Harry potter or any other mainstream fantasies out there…
4 years old, still the best cinematic WotC has ever got That’s a love letter to all Liliana players and fans, it’s the most amazing way to evolve her character and yet still be aligned with her backstory and whole purpose to be a necromancer in the first place I still cry every time she unleashes HER full army onto Bolas
