Which Might and Magic is the easiest?

The modern set of games, including MM4: Clouds of Xeen, is relatively easy to get into due to its compact story and areas. However, players should be prepared to explore and talk to people to find things. MM4: Clouds of Xeen is the best entry point, as it has a gentle start, a competent default party, and an easier difficulty setting. It also lacks the archaic gameplay and complexity of the skill point system found in later games.

To fully enjoy MM4, players should not use pyramids until they defeat Lord Xeen, as they can easily earn enough XP in MM5 and make MM4 too easy. Overall, MM4: Clouds of Xeen is a more accessible and enjoyable game to play.

Will there be a Might and Magic 8?

Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer is a role-playing video game in the science fantasy genre, developed for Microsoft Windows by New World Computing and released in 2000 by The 3DO Company. It is the eighth game in the Might and Magic series and received middling critical reviews, citing the game’s length and dated game engine. The game was later ported to PlayStation 2 in Japan and published by Imagineer on September 6, 2001.

Unlike the previous two games, Might and Magic VIII introduces a new party management system that allows all but one player character to be hired, dismissed, or re-hired at any time during gameplay to vary the party composition.

The character class system used in the previous two games has been overhauled, with only the Cleric and Knight classes remaining and the Sorcerer class re-tooled as Necromancers. The experience, spells, levelling, and skill system present in both previous Might and Magic titles are retained, with only minor updates.

Is Might and Magic 6 turn-based?

Heroes VI is a turn-based strategy video game for Microsoft Windows, developed by Black Hole Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. It is the sixth installment in the Heroes of Might and Magic series and was released on October 13, 2011, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the franchise. The game follows the five heirs to the Griffin dynasty in their quest to repel a demon invasion and assist or impede Michael, a legendary Archangel general plotting to revive an ancient war.

Players can choose between single-player or multiplayer modes and control a number of heroes and towns associated with various factions. The game has altered some of the series’ long-standing conventions, overhauling its chance-based skills system and removing the old “magic guild” spell system. It also reduced the number of resources from seven to four in its economics model and introduced new mechanics, such as a points-based reputation system, army-less hero travel, and increased area control by faction-affiliated towns.

Heroes VI received “generally favorable reviews”, praised for its replay value, visuals, and improvements to the Heroes formula. However, critics criticized the release version’s numerous bugs and glitches and its intrusive DRM system, which requires players to maintain a connection to the Internet for several features.

  • It looks like the MM feel is alive and well with this game 🙂 I am beyond happy that the devs finally got this game finished and released. I have been playing the MM series since 1984, and I have loved every release (some more than others). One question though. Can the movement smoothness be altered for preference? Like MM8 with the 8x, 16x, 32x and smooth settings?

  • Jesus christ, people, not every fantasy game needs to be Skyrim. This is, by the looks of it, an awesome, challenging, and genuinely, unapologetically old-school gem of an RPG. I actually like the relatively low production values: triple A blockbusters tend to have so much money tied up in them that they can’t afford to take too many risks with game design lest they risk alienating potential players. You end up with boorish, samey games. I’ve never played a M&M game before, but some reviews and especially gameplay articles have convinced me to give it a shot. Look genuinely incredible. I’m surprised big publishers are still releasing games like this.

  • The game looks great, reminds me of MM 4 and 5 which I played a lot back in the day. Why are people complaining about graphics, the older games had more text than graphical representations and you had to use your imagination which apparently gamers nowadays lack. Thats why we now have games with good graphics and zero gameplay, everything gets casualized.

  • aside from its story and fas world, one of the charm of most might and magic games are the fact that we can dress up our heroes. it’s regrettable for me that Ubisoft can’t add that one cool feature of might and magic games…instead they just use one fixed look for each class no matter their equipments.

  • I see a huge amount of people defending this game based on the assumption that the detractors are children. Like I said in my post I was happy with the fallout series in its early years. Bethesda decided it was ready to bring up to speed with today’s tech. It did great and kept it’s humor and spirit. Oh yeah and that was what over 20 years ago that the put out fallout 1? Let’s avoid talking about wasteland 1. This series hasn’t and likely won’t do that. But then if you are targeting a tiny (and angry/rabid it seems) market of people then more power to all but your budget. For me and my wallet I plan to buy games that won’t play on my phone, I have one of those and buy different games for it.

  • yeah, you are right there. it is two camps. I was being rash in my statement, but it was hard not to be when every single comment was saying grid based -turnbased combat is bad, and how “MM was like MM6+”. Personally I like both the earlier games and newer ones, but to me they are all M&M. Saying grid based is not m&m is what was wrong from people. So if I offended anyone, apologies.

  • to the people complaining about combat system, movement “animation/system” and all other stuff which is caracteristic for an oldschool game; seriously, GET THE FUCK OUT. i bet none of you is even older than 18. this kind of game with its movement and combat etc. is fucking epic. it’s like complaining in rts games why you ahve to move every unit itself or why you have to reload manually in fps games etc. this game is very good so far, i really enjoyed it a lot.

  • Yep, that’s all I needed to see. Spiders. No thanks. And before anyone starts cracking jokes, let’s just say I played Skyrim. First time playing it, and I entered Bleak Falls Barrow….you can pretty much guess what happened….I shut the game off, uninstalled it and haven’t touched it since. If I can ever get over my arachnophobia I would very much like to play Skyrim. It looks like a beautiful and well thought out game. * sigh *

  • Messed up all the kiddies in who complain that this isn’t like Might and Magic. It is… the original 5 games.. Play isle of terra on the genesis/snes, or load up dos box to play MM4 and 5 world of xeen and its a grid based, thinking game. I didn’t like when MM went real time and it ruined so much of the strategey and became a click fest. This game rocks and you people should research the series before making assumptions on gameplay! This is bringing back the OG gameplay and that’s great!

  • So I went to the android store and tried to find this amazing looking game for my phone. When is it coming out? Or do those nasty TI-82s get it first again?! Oh wait its a PC game. Jokes aside lets look at the Fallout series that was completely destroyed by making it real time in Fallout 3. No wait that was a best seller. I loved and played the first two but bringing it into the present was just what an old game needed. Of course telling old fans that is probably harder than a salem witch trail defense. I would ask that if you disagree please do not throw any Atari 2600s at me I have to many to recycle now.

  • Honestly, I hope this game does not add too much to the story what we follow in the Heroes franchise. I first wanted to buy this but… nah. The idea is good but what I miss and like most about this franchise is the building, the huge variety of creatures you can have in your army and fights need strategy. This is not the same and I do hope that the story of this game will be added to the next Heroes game that hopefully will be made in the same style we are used to. According to what I see, not many like it and not many play this one. So I am not the only one who is disappointed. I did expect a first person stuff but I thought they will leave at least some of the usual features intact, sigh

  • Can’t say I’m surprised seeing Ubisoft recycles stuff from previous Ubi-M&M titles. For example the battle theme is from M&M Dark Messiah(as is the Heroes VI Inferno theme). Music obviously isn’t the only thing recycled.. It seems that they’ve used the already limited bestiary from Heroes VI. I sure hope the bugs from H6 haven’t infected this game yet.

  • But I’m not merely dissatisfied with one measly detail, I’m dissatisfied with a lot of details, and while aesthetics may not be the focus of this game, it plays a big factor in keeping my interest. At least monster & character design in M&M 3-5 were somewhat unique compared to the usual fantasy fare.

  • just as duke nukem revival was an atrocity that disenchanted reasoning fans and repulsed the skeptics, this game would be equally disastrous if released in a similar state. the original might and magic series has always been about overwhelming swarms and legions of enemies, even if vastly inferior, at the very beginning of the game; goblin mobs and dragonfly hordes showed no mercy. this scattered few spiders, even if comparable to characters in terms of health, show how the very core differs.

  • It’s not that I’m old but I’m old. I’m old enough to remember why games designed like this were left behind in favor of games with better controls and graphics engines. I’ve played everything from the Atari all the way up to things most people can’t imagine ( stereoscopic skyrim projected onto a 110″ screen with a HD25LV 3d projector through a GTX 780 FTW ) and I’m not sure why “real” gamers would think it’s “better” to take several steps backwards….

  • Hmm, nope; it can handle relatively simple games like maple story or diablo 3, resource-hogging games like Battlefield 3 or Crysis will probably crash that rig though (unless you game on the lowest settings). That looks more like a budget comp for basic needs. Invest in a intel i5 desktop cpu and grab yourself (at the very least) a HD7850 or GTX660 gpu and you have a somewhat decent gaming comp. If you have the budget to spare, go for a HD7950 or GTX760 gpu.

  • Is it just me or does anyone else wish they reverted to the classic MM6-8 graphics and gameplay? this game visually looks confusing as hell. Could basically run the VIII game engine, update the graphics slightly and make a bigger world with more and new quests. Completely chop down the cost of graphics/development and then add in a ridiculous amount of weapons, armor dungeons monsters etc.

  • Maybe back in 86 this kind of movement worked, but why do we have the whole 1 square at a time movement still? The old style was due to programming limitations so theres no reason to keep the old style to attempt to keep it looking nostalgic. Sure turn based combat is cool but frame by frame movement just makes it too time consuming. Like ok this dungeon that takes 20 mins is now gonna take 2 hours cus just to move up a hallway takes 5 mins due to only being able to move one square at a time. I expect this style back in the day but dont see why they still make games like this. Doesn’t look like it isnt fun, just the movement alone would just piss me off too much.

  • I have got to say, compared to earlier games this one looks like it won’t be as fun, and why? because of tiled based movement and looking only in 4 directions, it will be breaking immersion and be really frustrating to explore world like that, it is especially unbelievable why they did that because they made world fully in 3d, they would get so much more publicity and money if they only implemented system like in MM 6 to 9 did. It is really breaking heart that they would do something like that

  • Yet Malevolence was based off games just like this, if you didn’t know. Hell, they even say that on the webpage. They stole their thunder from games like Eye of the Beholder, Might/Magic, and Dungeon Keeper. That’s like the pot calling the kettle black. You need to learn to pick and choose your battles.

  • …those had something in them, some juice that these new ones lacks, anyone can complete me? Really wish from the bottom of my heart this would be just GREAT, AWESOME, A NEW CLASSIC!!! But no, I’m highly skeptical after the release of M&M 6. I was one of those who got tricked by the Marketing rubbish claiming that Heroes 6 will be Heroes 3 in new clothing, UGH! Nope, unfortunately. If anyone have played this pls let me know your thoughts, still want to believe it MAY be ok, Thanks 🙂

  • while the comment is far from adequate, as someone who’s been with the original 6~8 as well as the more recent d&d mechanism driven games such as dragon age (while 2 is insidious about the underlying workings and features jrpg style damage figures, the system still falls within d&d category), I can see the reasoning behind the comment and see its limited merit.

  • Sigh… The sounds reminds me of the golden age of M&M 6, remember those times guys? Open world (in real sense!), the inventory, items, monsters. Been thinking to go back to it even though I played it many times before and immerse in it once again for a while. Really miss NWC & 3DO. Both series of M&M and Heroes died for me ending with M&M 8 and Heroes 3 and I really tried hard playing M&M9 Heroes 4-6 but no avail, just left it after little while with no interest. Wish it would be otherwise!…

  • I kind of regret buying this. Like many others, I got it for nostalgic reasons but this is more like M&M 1 to 5 than 6 to 8(which I preferred). The whole style of moving one square at a time and wait for the rest of the world to make their move kind of kills the world experience. My pc is by no means slow but it’s unnatural to walk through town like you have messed up legs. I much prefer the pause/turn for combat and real time movement of the 6 to 8 series.

  • People that complain about the way the game move or “inferior” graphics are kiddies that grew up with 3D accelerated graphics and gigs of ram and have no idea and should go back to playing Sky Rim (not that it’s a bad game) and call of duty. this game is a throw back to the style of old school M&M / and Eye of the Beholder style RPG. this game seems not bad comming from an old school PC rpg player.

  • I think there is something wrong with the game concept. Game has evolved since Eyes of the Beholder and it seem to me so far that, to be nostalgic, i would rather play EOB1-2-3 again than give this game a try. The problem with this type of game is you do not control your characters apart…might has well be one character with 4 differents aspect…. this is why game has evolved to final fantasy for a better visualisation and use of each characters (that i do not enjoy) but also one character; the entire Elder scroll serie as a first person shooter view, Neverwinter night and diablo for a 3rd person view….not to mention World of Warcraft….because afterall, you’d rather play 1 character as if it was you to go play with your friends online…… but even then you had games like Realms of Arcadia that came out just after EOB that was a turn base which gave you a better control of multiples characters for better combat strategy…..anyone who speaks of one player controling multiple characters, you have to go turn based…. such today you’ll find in Bloodbowl (different type of game but still)….otherwise you end up with a game like warcraft

  • Back in the day, i loved these games. However, games are evolving, and this old style of gameplay seems really outdated, and frankly, doesn’t look very exciting. I think it is the worst thing Ubisoft can do with the series, for one, i doubt they’ll get much income from it. but then again, it doesn’t look like it took a lot to make it.

  • I only wait for them to say they release it on ipad or other kind of device like that, same story as with blizzard and diablo 3, trying to get fans to buy game clearly projected towards different market, and then after some time announce that it will be also sold on consoles/tablets. It just sells on pc first cause they want to milk this market first/it is harder to make it work well on tablet, and there is no point announcing now that it will get there too and make some fans curse them already

  • Once again Might and Magic 1- 5 were grid based… are all you complainers young kids? Is anyone else out here in their mid thirties who played the originals back between 1986-1994? I played them in highschool and loved them… i hated, hated what they did to MM in 6-8 and it seems you all are blasting this for not being like 6-8…so I guess none of you played 1-5? 4 and 5 was a massive world that joined togeather to make one massive game. It rocked and 3 was also SNES/ genesis.

  • hmmm nooby..that explains it all, as you obiviously never played MM 4 and 5 that you are refrencing.. MM 1-5 all played in a gridbased gameplay. MM6 -8 turned it realtime and those came out in 1998 -2000. The game this is going back to were from 1988 – 1994 and all played in a grid like this. When you got hit the portrait had a blod spot and different faces would be replaced… Thats the mm i remember playing when I was 12-16 back in the early 90s or on the Snes/genesis or vga 386 pc.. Classic

  • Its just sad to see the lot on here getting all hung up on the graphics-part. Id rather play a never ending complex story of 8 gigs than one hour of repetetive handsome looking crap of a game.. Just started playing Might and magic X, its tricky as fuck, and i guess the big deal about it is that it takes some brain to play.. No its not Skyrim, No its not Diablo with loot 2.0. Maby cuz its not a hackndslash? Maby cuz its not a pure grinder? I remember me playing might and magic waaaaay waaaaay back in the days and i didnt start to enjoy the game until i started to READ about the lore and quests. I guess that part kinda rules out about 90% typing here and is prolly also the reason why you arent enjoying it. And always, if you dont enjoy it, then dont fucking play it.. simple huh?

  • while the visuals are vastly improved over the original releases, they are no match for the new elites such as dragon age and witcher…no fan, no matter how die-hard, can deny the insurmountable chasm of a difference. when it comes to controls, the camera control, while inheriting the steadfast traits of the original, seemed outdated compared to contemporary niche occupants…with such explosive growth and advancement in technology, more titillating effects are now available but unused.

  • the comments below this article make me sick, should be 18+ . seriously, reading stuff about “TES” has evolved a lot and is close to perfect as it is right now (which represents general opinions here about game evolution)?? fucking kidding me. even tho it still is a good game, skyrim is very likely the worst TES out there.

  • honestly people are idiots, instead of encouraging the devs who decided to go old-school you are bringing everything down with negativism…why’s everybody complaining, doesn’t look half-bad to me?…sure I liked free movement instead of grid as well and sure I liked inventory instead of icons as well and sure the character portraits might not be awesome….but heck this still looks like a balsam for my souls after 10 long years, its either this or NOTHING, I’ll go with this thank you…

  • IMO. The game is fine. But it is too simplified. Since we can not see our characters in action during combat, its quite a disappointment. Like the classic final fantasy 7 would be suffice i think. The graphic and lightning average. The music background is not interesting for me. No voice during conversation seems to be a big NO for today’s gameplay. I would read its book version (if available) rather than playing the game.

  • Kiddo? Really, so we are down to insults now? Mature. I wouldn’t have bought MM legacy if I cared about graphics… however, being that MM 6 is one of my all time favorite games, I bought this without researching it first. The grid based system really, really makes this unplayable for me. We are allowed to have our own opinion, don’t we? I get that some people prefer the grid, we don’t. We are allowed to voice our opinion nontheless, without having idiots insult us.

  • first pircen vew point that the bigest problem in my eyes you go in a straight line left or right and so on the camera looks stiff as hell id much more prefer if i can have a third person view point with this big graphics of the environment i definitely expected a lot more from this game … sry but as much as i like games like this its a fail in my yeas from the beginning :/

  • WTF happend to regular movement from MM IX? this grid movement turns me off a classic game that should have been kept alive in some way if it werent for the GRID MOVEMENT or the “LINES” around everything i would buy and play MM IX was the last ditch turn effort i believe on MM series and i loved it but lots hated it it had its flaws but wasnt grid based like this crap…. I am disappointed looking at it with grid based how can you have free roam like in might and magic ix? Dissappointment 🙁

  • Nice. A 90s Flash-player game, as a corridor RPG with better grpahix and twitched movement. Welcome to the new age.. Even “Dark Messiah Might And Magic”, take that, and make it actual Might And Magic game. overall : Who the FUCK will play this shit??? Just take the old pixelated game and make a new strory, it will be 100 times better than this crap.

  • consistently outsourcing entire games to newly-rising companies, as seen in homm6 deferral to black hole, may be a way to cut cost, but such arrangements simply result in too many bugs and too much poorly thought-out and poorly designed content. I don’t know how can ubisoft come out of this looking good…chasing after the current vogue alienates existing fan-base, but maintaining tradition won’t draw in many new customers. Revival has historically been treated as miracles and providence,

  • Uhm.. so, me being 22, makes me a kid? I’m sorry, but every generation after yours are not “kids”. We are adults, and we’ve grown up with, and loved, 6 though 8. You may have hated it, but it’s part of my childhood, it’s what i connect with “might and magic”. So, I’m just as upset to see him do this to the series, as you were, when they went away from it. Understand?

  • Might and Magic X: Dark Messiah edition seriously, fucking DM models?? THE SAME MUSIC?! “Oh, but we kept some sounds from the original game in! That makes it legitimate.” It does absofuckinglutely nothing. 3DO would run circles around Bioware if they still existed today. Grid based?? Wow, way to degenerate back to MM5 and below. I think I’ll stick with MM6 & 7, thank you.

  • WHYYYYY why have you done this to the inventory?! Please, can we get back to the real inventories, where you could see that the new sword is better just from the way it looks, when you had to move spears to one corner and plate armor to another.. How I hate contemporary inventories when everything is just an icon – F*k that

  • Why shoot a HD article of something with procedural (aka really crappy) textures? This thing looks like it was made for the mobile market, given a few extra post-procedural shaders, and pushed onto the PC market. Most ‘nostalgic’ games fail miserably. They think they can just make them as cheaply as they did back then, when we did not have the tools or code to make anything better than this. Today, this is a Kickstarter quality game, nothing more. Epic quest? Not from the reviews I read. Keep spinning Ubisoft. You are nearly at EA’s level of BS.

  • this looks more like an action game than like a rpg … poor text, poor quest design (go kill this-get that kind of quest), inninteresting quest rewards, just like in Wow, non original intro, irealistic loot location … Plus they change the gameplay style every year, now returning to the style of MM 6 … maybe in a hope to sell more after seeing the return to this genre in the game Legend of Grimrock

  • this looks really fucking boring, the fact that this is first person AND! turn based is ridiculous…you can’t watch your character shoot the bow or cast the magic? how stupid and boring, i can not believe they think this game is going to make it…all you see is your 4 characters pictures, an arrow flying from your screen to the monster and you can’t move while you fight the creature, how stupid is that…how boring it will be running around and having to take 3 to 10 minutes of just standing there clicking on character pictures and an attack to use only to watch no animations of your character shooting, slashing a weapon or casting magic…and hearing some shitty sound effects while the creatures move towards you and ends up having half the creatures body under your UI ( HOW FUCKING RIDICULOUS IS THAT! ), this game looks fucking terrible, the graphics suck and the fact that its a first person turned based RPG with no animations and only a picture of your four characters is just terrible game making and a terrible idea…this game will have no quick thinking or stratagy, NO! dodging, and no strategic combat like maneuvering your character and aiming for a weak spot or aiming for the head AND NO COSMETIC THINGS FOR YOUR CHARACTER WHAT SO EVER!. the creators should be fired and ashamed for making a game that is going to embarrass the name and franchise of Might and Magic…how the hell did might and magic let the creates of this “might and magic” franchise too publish a game that is this terrible and boring?
