Light is a Level 3 Skillchain composed of Fire, Light, Lightning, and Wind Elements. It can be used at the end of a skillchain to increase damage and attack undead mobs. Shantotto II will close with WS properties like Light, Fragmentation, Distortion, and Gravitation. Mages can magic burst with Light by using Burst Affinity during spell casting or by using it between two skillchains or at the end of a skillchain involving two or more Weapon Skills.
Magic bursts can be performed with any monster-targeted spell, elemental Blood Pacts, and Wyvern breaths, yielding a substantial increase in damage. Effects that can create a magic burst include spells, bard songs, ninjitsu, Blood Pacts from an Avatar, or a Wyvern’s breath attack. The rules for Magic Bursting require the spell to land on the mob between 2-4 seconds after the burst has finished.
If a caster uses a spell of the same element as the skill chain, they would perform a “magic burst”, increasing spell damage and accuracy. In Shantotto II, Dark or Fusion will not be available, but Dark or Fusion will be introduced in the future.

It became the final active server on the PlayStation 2 online service, ending support for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 versions on March 31, 2016. A mobile client for the game was developed in collaboration with Korean developer Nexon, but was cancelled in late 2020. A spin-off mobile game, Final Fantasy Grandmasters, was released in September 2015, and a new, episodic story series, The Voracious Resurgence, was added in 2020, concluding in June 2023.

How do skillchains work in FFXI?
Skillchains are created by successfully performing a sequence of abilities with Skillchain attributes, typically Weapon Skills and Blood Pacts. The order of abilities is determined by these attributes. When a Weapon Skill is performed, the target resonates with the Skillchain attributes for 5 to 6 seconds. If a Skill chain with a resonating Skillchain attribute, a Skillchain is formed, and the resulting Skillchain becomes the new resonating Skillchain attribute.
If a subsequent Weapon Skill has no Skillchain Attributes or misses entirely, the target will continue to resonate with the previous Weapon Skill’s Attributes until a Weapon Skill with Skillchain Attributes connects or until time expires.
The damage performed by a Skillchain is determined by the level of the Skillchain and the damage dealt by the Weapon Skill that completes the Skillchain. Higher-level skillchains are less likely to be resisted, and monsters with a high level of resistance to Skillchain damage are typically more resistant to damage.

Thanks so much for this. I’ve literally attempted to print out the graphs. However, I’m only 7 minutes into your article and I’m overwhelmed. Lol, I’ll get there but I’m still learning a lot. New player since November. Haven’t gotten to 99 as of yet. Still exploring jobs to see which ones I like. But this will certainly make sense to me at some point. Thanks for providing all the articles that you continue to produce. I really watch them and appreciate your hard work.
This was astoundingly helpful! Skillchains were always a bit confusing for me back in the day, this really helped out plan some good weapon skill combos! I did have a question, maybe you can answer: While leveling a dark knight, using a great sword (around level 35-45) I’d use ‘Freezebite’ as an opener, than Shantoto II would use ‘Lesson in Pain’ to close as a ‘Scission’ then magic burst with stone magics. Question is, how does an Ice type opener, with properties of Induration and Detonation, combine with a non elemental to make an Earth based Skillchain? Thanks for an awesome and informative article! Cheers!
Ah the old days, when you would work with others to figure out what chains you could do. Remember lowbie exp parties trying to chain for MB on like ice and fire. figuring out the timing to MB ancient spells to basically quickly finish fights. One of the things that made ffxi so fun to party in was setting up skillchains with the other melees for mages to MB the life outage mobs. Good ol off tanking as drg, voking and double thrust for sata viperbite onto tank for perfect hate. It was the only reason I’d get parties /seek “will provoke for parties”
