Oakland University, established in 1957, was rebranded as the Golden Grizzlies in 1997. The university’s athletics program was moved from NCAA Division II to Division I in 1997, and all aspects of the program were examined, including its mascot, Pioneer Pete. OU alum Charles “Chick” Conklin served as the original Pioneer Pete before the university changed its athletic teams in 1999 from the NCAA.
The university’s motto, “Seguir virtute e canoscenza”, is taken from Dante’s epic poem, where Ulysses tells his men to “seek virtue and”. The current mascot, the Grizz, is a bear who greets fans and takes pictures at home games and events. There are six mascot performers who have been through tryouts and had the opportunity to become a part of the university’s history.
Oakland University is one of the eight research universities in Michigan and is classified among “R2”. When the university changed its mascot to the Golden Grizzlies in 1998, the university rebranded the lake — Bear Lake. The Golden Grizzlies play home games at the O’rena, a sports venue in Rochester, Michigan.
The Grizz was the first mascot Oakland University had, but from as early as the 1950s until he retired in 1999, Pioneer Pete was the one cheering on the team. The Oakland University Golden Grizzlies represent Oakland University (OU) in the Horizon League and Division I.
