In Elden Ring, mages can be strong but lack good defense and summons to take aggro. Magic is considered the most powerful weapon in PvE, with several standout sorceries and incantations that offer pure damage, versatility, and ranged builds. Players cast magic spells in the form of Sorceries and Incantations, from conjuring glintstone pebbles to invoking the power of dragons. Intelligence-based sorceries and faith-based incantations are powerful tools in the Lands Between.
Eternal Darkness is one of the best sorceries for fully built mages who want to defend themselves from magic attacks. This Night Sorcery draws in all other spells being fired at you, making it an effective choice for fully built mages. Magic builds are viable, but they still require a good melee weapon.
Magic has always been OP in Dark Souls and Elden Ring, but there is a drawback in using magic due to the stat investment compared to melee. It does more damage than melee, and most enemies and bosses have no counters or move too much. Magic does more damage than melee, and players may use bad spells, bad gear, or be underleveled.
For those wanting to use magic, pure Faith or Intelligence caster builds are the best Elden Ring builds. Hybrid characters can wield these sorceries, which offer a diverse range of useful options to fit any play style. Sorcery is more about direct damage than incantations, which have a support vibe despite some flashy offensive spells.

Is magic a good build in Elden Ring?
The Elden Ring offers a unique approach to tackling bosses with magic without feeling weak. A Sorcerer build requires a significant investment in Intelligence stats, allowing players to turn themselves into the moon. The best Elden Ring builds include the Intelligence build, Sorcerer build, and Intelligence build.
Is magic or weapons better in Elden Ring?
Magic is a powerful option in Elden Ring, with Intelligence fueling sorcery and playing a significant role in the game. Players have limitless options when it comes to selecting a primary weapon, with various weapons that scale well with Intelligence, including quick-hitting swords, daggers, and powerful colossal weapons. While an Intelligence build typically wants a Glintstone Staff, personal choice is key.
In the DLC, players have two new powerful weapons for Intelligence builds: the Star-Lined Sword and the Staff Of The Great Beyond. The Star-Lined Sword is a great melee backup for a ranged spellcaster, while the Staff of the Great Beyond allows Intelligence-users to cast Incantations without taking up another weapon slot. These weapons are essential for the best Intelligence builds in Elden Ring, as they allow for more customization and versatility in the game.
Are magic classes good in Elden Ring?
The Elden Ring Astrologer class is a powerful ranged magic option with 15 Mind and 16 Intelligence stats. It can cast powerful Sorcery spells for single and multiple targets. However, its stats are low, so it’s recommended to spend first Runes on boosting Vigor and Endurance to increase HP and Stamina. Increasing Intelligence can help meet higher Attribute requirements for better spells. The class also has the highest starting Faith, more balanced stats, and Incantations that focus less on dealing damage.
Can you beat Elden Ring using only magic?
The majority of adversaries can be vanquished through the use of magical abilities. However, it is necessary to invest time and effort into enhancing one’s equipment and spells to achieve this. Locating an alternative to the Astrologers Staff can be a lengthy process, unless one circumvents adversaries by means of a trap chest in order to obtain the Meteorite Staff.
Is sorcery or incantations better?
Intelligence builds and sorcery magic are more viable than Faith builds and incantations in PvE and PvP. Sorceries have offensive power, faster casting times, and are more FP efficient. However, incantations are still viable and better for cooperative play. They heal co-op buddies, stun, and interrupt large groups of enemies, dealing significant damage to bosses and PvE enemies. Some incantations build up Bleed, Frostbite, and Madness status effects, forcing PvP opponents to back off.
Both incantations and sorcery magic are useful when navigating the Elden Ring. The choice depends on the character build and the foes. Sorceries are more effective for aggressive attacks, while incantations are more suitable for support-based spells. Players who prefer more aggressive attacks may prefer sorceries, while those who prefer support-based spells may prefer incantations.

I always use a spellsword build in souls games. You always see a mage with a weapon of some kind but they rarely use it or only spam the weapon arts on said weapon. Typically it’s just a prop in their hand meant to scare you into thinking they will use it when they won’t or don’t. As far as why I prefer the spellsword builds over just straight melee builds because of the bows being bad unless you use great bows or spam status arrows. I have decent armor. I have ranged damage and melee damage also. So I have an answer for most situations. If you have a build with no kind of magic at all in Elden Ring you feel so nerfed. Also the soft caps being raised and the meta being between 125 to 150 you can really pull that off really well. It’s all about how you want to play that’s the point of an RPG game after all.
