Warlock Spells: Can Wizards Learn Them?

The Magic Item Creation rules (DMG 129) can be used during downtime to have a Warlock create a spell scroll. However, only wizards can learn spells from RAW spellbooks. Warlocks learn them by leveling and are granted by the patron. Multiclassing between spellcasters and warlocks is simple, treating them separately for learning.

Copying a spell into a spellbook requires that the spell be on the wizard spell list, so you cannot learn extra warlock spells that way. A wizard can learn a warlock spell, but they have different spellcasting abilities. Warlocks learn and grow in power at the cost of occasional services performed on the patron’s behalf. The magic bestowed on a warlock ranges from minor to lasting alterations to their being.

Warlocks and wizards use spells in fundamentally different ways. Warlocks need a few spells, so their spell list is relatively small. They can gain more spells through Eldritch Invocations, and gaining 5th level gains a new 1st, 2nd, or 3rd level spell and can swap out a spell they already know for a different one.

Wizards can learn scrolls with wizard levels, but they can only learn them up to the wizard spell level you’ve reached. Directly from other spellcasters, wizards might learn spells through apprenticeship, magical instruction, or witnessing another. Sorcerers learn spells at different rates, similar to warlocks.

A wizard can learn a spell from a scroll created by a cleric as long as that spell is also on the wizard spell list. Scrolls are not specific to class type.
