Special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Donald Trump’s campaign ties to Russia concluded without finding evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in the 2016 election. The Justice Department stated that Mueller’s nearly two-year investigation did not find adequate evidence to show that officials with Trump’s presidential 2016 campaign aided Russian attempts to interfere. Mueller found no criminal conspiracy between the president’s team and Moscow, and while Mueller declined to recommend charges against Trump, he did not conclude that Trump had obstructed justice.
The report stated that no evidence of a conspiracy was found, but it did lay out 10 instances where the president possibly obstructed justice. Mueller has said his report did not exonerate Trump of any wrongdoing. Attorney General William Barr sent a four-page letter to Congress showing that Mueller did not clear Trump of obstruction of justice. Mueller deputy Aaron Zebley looked back on the investigation of Trump’s ties to Russia and explained why his team didn’t indict the president.
In conclusion, Mueller’s investigation did not find sufficient evidence that Trump’s campaign coordinated with Russia, and he did not conclude that Trump had obstructed justice. The Justice Department’s decision to dismiss Trump’s claims of “total exoneration” is a significant step towards resolving the ongoing political debate surrounding the Trump campaign.
