Electional astrology is a method used by astrologers to determine the best time to begin an action based on favorable Horoscope Factors. It helps individuals start an action when the astral rhythms are favorable and the Universe is willing to help them. This technique is suitable for those who wish to be in control of their life and can help avoid sticky situations and alert them to potential areas of difficulty.
Electional astrology is a branch found in most traditions of astrology, where practitioners decide the most important placements in an electional chart. The ascendant and ascendant ruler in an election are also important, as are the moon’s positions. Planetary conditions and placement are meticulously studied by astrologers, particularly the Sun, Moon, and key planets like Mercury.
Electional astrology can help individuals make plans during the most auspicious periods of their life, such as weddings, medical procedures, and job interviews. It operates on the premise that if an event or undertaking has a definable start point, it also has a birth chart. Astrology, the ancient practice of interpreting celestial influences, has captivated human imagination for millennia.
In summary, electional astrology is a practical tool that helps individuals make decisions based on favorable Horoscope Factors and the astral rhythms. It can help individuals make informed decisions about their lives and make informed decisions about their future.

So, I have a good story @ a recent election chart that illustrates your points about malefics in angular houses rather nicely. I used it to time entering a juried art exhibit. The chart has Sag rising with Sun and Jupiter and Mercury in the 1st exactly trine the Moon at 4 Leo in the 9th, 2 Libra on the Mc in the 11th with Venus. Pretty good, right ? One of my 6 entries won first prize! However with Saturn in the 2nd it took several weeks to actually receive my prize. I have never been to an award event where awards are not awarded. I finally had to go ask for it. But then of course because Mars and Neptune were angular in Pisces in the 4th (which couldn’t be avoided to get the other goodies) the gallery roof leaked during the rains and some of my work had to be taken down temporarily. No harm done, perhaps because Mars is past the exact square to Jupiter in the sign Jupiter rules. Fun stuff.
This is an amazing episode. It opened up a whole new exploration for me in a grounded, logical and principled manner. Thank you! I was following another astrologer who puts out seasonal electional charts and I was getting lost (and frustrated) in the WHAT ARE WE DOING and WHY! This episode grounded me back to a solid foundation. You two are a delightful and insightful teaching team!
I am so glad I found you on YouTube. The most practical astrology show I have found so far. Thank you so much. I hope to sigh up for you podcast soon. I have learned so much. Too funny he talking about the shoot gun wedding I kind of had one. I was so push by my ex to marry him. I knew the timing was wrong. I should of stuck to my first take we might still be together today if I didn’t let him push me into it. Good Lord, that’s what these Aries have been doing to me forever pushing me when I knew they were wrong. Because of my health problems & my mercury placement I have a hard time explaining why not now.

0:36:28 This!!! This is why I don’t want just anyone doing my Natal. Because I don’t want to pay someone big bucks to tell me I have “challenges”. LOL I want the nasty, hard truth about my life. I Know my chart is bad! I’ve learned enuf about Astrology to know that. So, I don’t need no Unicorns farting all over me! LOL
I didn’t know that it was called elective astrology but I did plan on being pronounced Husband and wife during our wedding at an exact time. I even planed on walking down the isle 10 minutes late so the time would be precise. And when the priest announced us, my husband looked at his watch and we had a lot of flack about that…lol….But I explained it and we have been happily married for 42 years. I know of at least 3 couples that divorced and then remarried to each other years later and their marriages were much better. I am now wondering if Astrology was more favorable for each of them the second time around.
RE: astrologer’s role in giving “advice” – ethically, you give the client what they came for. You work within that framework. If they ask for advice like “should I marry her?” you can explore the potential issues that could arise, but if they just want to know “when should we get married within the next year?” you answer that question, maybe looking at a few alternatives and the challenges or joys they might bring.
Wow Leisa & Chris 🤩 Just listened to this episode on Spotify (have been devouring them for the past 6 months 🤍). This was such a great one. I’m planning to start formal astro study soon, at the Faculty of Astrological Studies (after 21 years of self-study). I had been having difficulty with finding a beneficial electional chart for the start-date, especially with the current planetary configurations! BUT I think I’ve got it now after listening to your advice. 02/03/21 Taurus ascendant; ruler Venus exalted in Pisces conjunct the midheaven; Moon in the 5th trine Mercury & Jupiter (plus a 9 degree separation trine to Saturn 🪐 but it’s a day chart and Saturn is not badly placed in Aquarius and no longer squaring Mars … phew!) I feel quite proud of myself! 😂😂 Thank you both so much!! Lisa NZ 🇳🇿 PS I plan to use the chart for the time of submitting the application 😊
Wonderful! Although you answered the question about putting a malefic in the first, I felt that the of-sect malefic was mostly addressed. What about the out-of-sect malefic? I mean if Mars is otherwise well placed in Aries in the first house in a day chart, with a trine applying to the Moon or whatever, does the fact that it’s the out-of-sect malefic make it a deal-breaker?
Thank you for the fantastic webinar, as always! In case of an event when Scorpio is on the Ascendant and Mars is the ruler (by the way, would you say it is ok to have ascendants in Scorpio, Capricorn etc for events, as they are ruled by the Malefics?), Mars was at 2 degrees Sagittarius, 2nd house, and Venus was at 29 degrees Leo, 10th house. Would you consider Mars and Venus to be in a trine (based on their signs) or in an applying square (based on their degrees)? Thank you.
you mentioned in the sept forecast that there were a lot of good elections this month so i figure it’s a good month to practice doing my own elections so i’m (potentially re-)watching (i’ve watched so many episodes in such a short time it’s hard to keep track, sue me! wait, no, don’t sue me. that’s the opposite of the point i’m trying to make) this episode also i think it’s hilarious that you asked lisa “wait, what’s my usual line” about the patreon promo, very funny to me
Yesterday I talked to my dad and mentioned this article on electional astrology and he told me that Turks leading up to the ottoman empire would have astrologers elect dates to go on journeys, attempt to conquer a place or go to war etc. I want to delve deep and do some research in this area. At what point did Muslims stop using Astrology and declare it forbidden or to be avoided. Because I look at all the old scholars and everything I know of my heritage and Astrology is there. The Ottomans used Astrology, palm and face reading to determine if a student should stay in school, join the army or become a vezir-someone who aids the sultan and different political ranks in the empire. But today I see Astrology spoken of as shirk meaning to put yourself in equal place to God. However, in the Quran it indicates the importance of the stars. There is a chapter called the stars, a chapter called moon and a chapter called sun ( surah shams, surah qamar and surah najm) And at the start of one Allah says ” I swear by the stars, and this is a grand swear” indicator of how important the stars are. However, the Quran also says to not believe ones who look at the stars and planets and presume to know the future. So I’m realizing there is a thin line between thinking I can tell or predict the future with astrology and/or using it as a tool to understand a person or a time. I believe it is not due to the stars or planets but that they have been created with reason to indicate certain things, they themselves cannot have the power to do anything on their own.
@Chris, you might want to raise the cost on your book. That is if you haven’t yet. Ik trust I haven’t bought it yet but I’m sure it is well worth 50$. Ik I’ve paid a lot more for books that seem to have less in them. At least just by listening to these lectures & you referring to your book that the subject goes deeper in it.
this is great. lots of information and I did an entire day study of it 🙂 I trust I got the best election chart for launching my first website. Leo Ascendant sun in first house, getting a nice trine from Jupiter. although is a night chart the only place I could get for Venus was in the 12 house. im ok with it becuase i placed the malefics in the cadent 6th and 9th house. the moon is right on MC degree getting a nice trine from Jupiter in the 5th as well. thank you again!! this is lots of fun.
Thanks so much for the great episode. Your book is on the way so forgive me if I can get this information in there but I did have a question. I’m trying to find a good time to elect for a diet and exercise program. The consensus of your podcast basically said avoid the 6th house but this would be the prominent house for this endeavor (at least I think so). Should I focus on the ruler of that house, putting the moon in that house, putting the ruler of the AC in that house? Or just ignore it and focus on Venus and Mars ( Venus – food, Mars – exercise)
Thank you so much for this amazing, well structured and helpful article!! I am in the middle of doing job applications so this is incredibly precious. I have one question, I noticed you never mentioned the house of joy of the planets, even when in one chart Jupiter is in the 11th. Was that because of lack of time to cover all techniques, or is this not important for an electional chart? If you follow the rule of the house of joy of the planets, having Saturn “well placed” as you recommend if it’s the ruler of the AC would mean Saturn in the 12th which is a house where earlier you explained the ruler of the AC must never be.Thank you so much if you have a moment to answer this question. And apologies if someone else has already asked this, I haven’t scrolled through all 156 comments!
Hi! Thanks so much for this riveting article!! How would you mitigate the malefics for Sagittarius and Pisces risings with the current Saturn in Pisces square Mars in Sagittarius in the sky? Especially when you don’t have a choice regarding the timeframe and the election is about travelling abroad, is it preferable that Mars is in a cadent House for a native day chart? And vice versa for a nocturne native chart, would you favour having Saturn in a cadent house for the elective?
Thank you for great explanation. I saw this article few years later. I have question regarding applying versus separating aspect. Do you take the ruler planet of the ascendant as reference and asses if others are applying or spectating, or you use other planets to assess if applying or spectating to the ruler of the ascendant?
Thanks for all you contribute! So useful… I am contemplating the ramifications for cancer rising people, as they have the moon as ruler. As only one house is ruled by the moon and with no other planet to consider it seems a big contrast to what all other rising signs have. Any thoughts? This seems to make cancer rising people very tied to the moon cycle🌙.
Hello. I have a question. Would you consider the moment that a person submits the application for something they want to begin like, university application, brokerage account, or business launching as the moment of inception? Regardless of the time when the administrative work on the other end will send back the confirmation that our activity is up and running. Because sometimes, they’re very late even though we finalize or submit on our elected time. And it’s out of our control after that. Lol. I’m not sure so I think I’ll try to ask here. Thank you.
so being that you don’t want the ruler of the ascendant in the 2nd, 6th, 8th, or 12th. is it bad to have the other benefics in these houses? say you have libra as the asc and venus isn”t in one of those houses, but you are casting a chart for business and jupiter is in the second house (which is supposed to be the house of gains and money issues, would this be a bad thing? or would it depend more on the houses being angular cadent succeedant ect.? apparently I need to take down notes on all your articles cause 3-4 hour long articles are hard to watch in one sitting.
Thank you so much for this wonderfully robust episode. I’m late to the game here, but could anyone please answer: Would you still avoid negative transits to a natal, exalted out-of-sect malefic? Would you still prioritize positive transits to a natal, in-sect benefic in its adversity or depression? Thank you!
Hey this question isn’t directly related to the article which is fantastic by the way I love your stuff, but I recently got a astrogold was wondering if there is a way to set the natal chart in the middle and progress the transit chart around the outside? It seems to make it the same chart in both when you progress it
If I have a really good electional chart, but Mars in the electional is only a few degrees away from my natal DSC (day chart for me; the electional chart would be a night chart) is it still a good-enough chart? In the electional chart, both malefics are in the 12th house. ASC ruler is Jupiter in its domicile in the 1st house; Venus is also first house. Moon in Cancer in the 5th… Note: It’s a chart for me quitting smoking.
One question… regarding choosing a time when the next aspect the Moon makes is a friendly aspect to a Benefic (i.e. applying to a trine, sextile, or conjuction with JU or VE): Would you say this is a good simple ‘stand-alone’ technique for things which are a little important, but not major? For example, small community events, phone calls or emails of moderate importance, etc. Does it carry enough weight to really be worth paying attention to?
Hey Chris, Great article! Not sure if ive missed this but is mercury classed as a benefic or malefic planet ? Could we say it would depend on its dignity its in by sign, for example being posited in pisces would this make mercury a malefic, but in virgo a benefic. Im asking because a chart im looking at for a past date, mercury is retrograde and is the only planet that will be applying by square (when turns direct) to the asc ruler, so not sure whether to see this as good or bad ?
There is someone I know that wants to open a business the business will be for guns and ammunition. In such case Mars rules guns? How does one cast such election, does Mars need to be the ruler of the ascendant and can it be placed in angles or the same rule for malefic in cadent houses still apply with no hard aspects to ascendant and moon?
Chris, this has nothing to do with this article but I have a question regarding the concept of “overcoming” that you discuss in your book. I’m trying to understand if in the square between my mars & saturn if saturn is in Scorpio in the 7th at 22 degrees & mars is in the 10th in aquarius at 19 degrees which one is overcoming which? Thanks!
God!!! Ok so I have been trying to learn astrology for making talismans and have got down about half of the methods (kinda) I understand terms, house system, decans, peregrine, exaltation, fall, detriment, ect., I kindof understand the master and co master of the nativity, just learned to read ephemerises, asc, dc, mc, aspects, but some of the ancient methods they expect that anyone reading the charts knows a god-like level of astrology… Like the atributions of certain stones in peoples elemental, or overall temperments is so complicating to me… Am I just dumb for starting with things like henry cornelius agrippas works? Should I have started out with psychological astrology, hellenistic? What? I have alot of these things written down, but not alot of it memorized. Am I the only person that’s wanting to cuss and throw things out of frustration? 😆
I know this isn’t going to be the popular comment, but I get confused between different methods. so according to the theosophical society, there are soooooo many rules for using astrological magick, you basically have to have the best memory in the world, or a collection of all the rules written down. just like electional astrology there seems to be no perfect chart unless, like you said: (if you want to wait 20 years). I am new to astrology, but it’s all super confusing with vthe different types of astrological magick. with aggripas and the supposed hermes trismigistus methods for creating talismans, you have to place the fixed star at the ascendant, or MC, for theosophical magick, it seems that every single facet of astrology is important, but especially the moon. what confuses me is the rules for placing the moon in angular or succeedent houses as well as the fortune in question, and for electional astrology it’s concerned with the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th, and eleventh. so according to electional astrology you can have taurus in the ascendant and venus in the 9th, but according to astrological magick, being in a cadent house with your fortune, or the moon is a no no, in electional astrology having any kind of aspect with a benific to the ruler of the ascendant is ok, but in astrological magick, having squares and oppositions, quincunxt ect, are not desirable. so my question is that, if using the planets currents of energy is just a helping hand, or a boost to working such things, then why are the rules so different?
One thing you did not address in your podcast is modern planets in the chart. What do you do if Uranus is squaring the ruler of ascendant or sitting on the ascendant? Modern planets affect the chart by transit. How do you mitigate their influence? Do you treat them like malefic planets? You also mentioned that for a trip you use the time of departure for the journey. WOuldn’t it be better to use the time you arrive at the destination?
