What Does Astrology’S Upapada Lagna Mean?

Upapada Lagna is a significant concept in Vedic astrology, particularly in the Jaimini branch. It represents the potential for marriage and relationships in a person’s life and is calculated by counting the same distance from the Ascendant as the distance between the Sun and the Moon, using the 12th house in a natal chart. Upapada Lagna is the second most important Arudha in a birth chart after Arudha Lagna, also known as the Bhava Pada of the 12th house, also known as Up-Arudha, Vyaya Pada.

Upapada Lagna is a divisional chart point (Dhana) used primarily to analyze relationships and marriage. It is not as widely used as ascendant (Lagna) or other major house placements, but it can offer valuable insights. To calculate Upapada Lagna, find the twelfth house in your chart and see where the Lord of the twelfth has traveled from the twelfth house. The word pada means foot, where something is standing or seeming to stand.

In Vedic astrology, Upapada Lagna is the technique of determining every single detail of your spouse, if taken out accurately. It indicates the conditions of married life, the nature of the family a person comes from, and the long standing of the marital relationship. In Jaimini astrology, Upapada Lagna is considered an important indicator of marriage and relationships. In Indian astrology, Upapada Lagna indicates happiness, sustenance, and longevity of marriage, multiple marriages, and polygamy.

In summary, Upapada Lagna is a crucial aspect in Vedic astrology, particularly in the Jaimini branch, representing the potential for marriage and relationships. By understanding its significance and interpretation, one can gain profound insights into the dynamics of relationships and partnerships.

Is ascendant important in astrology?

The ascendant, a sign in astrology, signifies the individual environment and conditioning a person receives during their upbringing and childhood. Astrologers believe it is also concerned with how a person presents themselves to the world, especially in public and impersonal situations. Although Babylonian astronomers observed the actual rising times of the signs, no specific mention of the ascendant in texts that have survived on clay tablets. By the 3rd century BCE, Egyptians used the rising of specific asterisms to identify the ascending sign and get an approximate time of night.

The Greeks later named the ascendant horoskopos, or “hour marker”. The first documented mention of an ascendant was found in the works of Balbilus. From an astrological perspective, the ascendant is the value of the ecliptical geocentric longitude (λ), which is easterly on the horizon.

In astrological practice, the Upapada Lagna, the Arudha of the 12th house, is employed in both Parashari and Jaimini astrology to predict aspects of one’s marital life, including spouse, children, and sexual activity. This is due to the 12th house’s association with sexual activity.

Which lagna is wealthy?

Dhana yogas, or wealth-giving bhavas, are determined by the Lakshmisthanas (bhavas) and their lords, planets, and trinal lords. The 5th and 9th bhavas and their lords, along with their planets, ensure wealth and prosperity. Indu lagna is also an indicator of wealth, as several planets associate with it or occupy kendras from it. Gain of wealth is more a result of one’s good previous karmas, and rasi-parivartana between the lord of the lagna and the lord of the 2nd, the Dhana bhava, is highly desirable.

Rahu, Venus, Mars, and Saturn combining in the Virgo (Kanya) sign give immense wealth. Some vedic astrologers believe that Rahu, Mars, and Venus in the Kanya (Virgo) sign gives wealth, while Saturn is excluded. Jupiter, Mercury, and Saturn occupying their own signs make one long-lived and gain riches regularly throughout life.

The lord of the Dhana bhava should occupy either its own house or a kendra to make one wealthy. The lord of the Dhana bhava in its own or exaltation sign and aspected by Jupiter makes one liked by others, famous, wealthy, and generous. Jupiter conjoining with Mars in the 2nd house gives much wealth, and the lords of the 2nd and 11th occupying each other’s houses or conjoining in a kendra or trikona also make one very rich.

Which lagna has long life?

The 8th house from the lagna is the house of longevity, while the 12th house, which includes the 2nd and 7th houses, are the marakasthanas (death-inflicting houses). The principal Marakas are the lords of the 2nd and 7th houses, who are designated as the inflictors of death or killers.

Marakas refer to the one that causes death at the end of a life-span or causes ill-health. For Aries lagna, Venus owns both marakasthanas, while for Taurus lagna, Mars, Moon, Mercury, and Mars are the marakas. For Gemini lagna, Saturn and Leo lagnas are associated with marakas, while Venus for Virgo lagna, Mars for Libra lagna, Venus and Saturn for Sagittarius lagna, Mars, Moon, and Jupiter for Capricorn lagna, Sun, Mars, and Jupiter for Aquarius lagna, and Mercury and Saturn for Pisces lagna.

Marakas and planets associated with them can cause illness and death during their dashas. If longevity is over but the dasa of maraka is not operating, the lord of the 12th house acts as the maraka and its dasha or the dasha of a malefic can cause death. Saturn and Rahu are the Mrityu-karakas or significators of death.

Death can occur in the antra-dasha or dasha of the lord of the 3rd nakshatra from Janam nakshatra for a person of Alpayu (short-life), in the 5th nakshatra for a person of Madhyayu (middle-life), and in the 7th nakshatra for a person blessed with Poornayu (long-life).

The manner of death can be known from yoga-formations occurring at the time of birth, such as being bitten by a cobra or stoned to death by falling on a stone or falling a stone. Death from punishment by ruler, fire, tuberculosis, excess fluids, surgery, fever, tumors, swelling, prolonged illness, starvation, poison, drowning, fall from height, injury, incarceration, or thirst or dehydration can also occur. Natural malefics cause illness or death in their dasha or antradasha, and disease can be prevented by a strong lagna and lord.

  • Hi this manjunath here from Bengaluru I am perusal you article on six month your knowledge of information is good, but background not good, I have small clarification about my birth chart Place – Bengaluru Time – 1,40am Date – 26/11/1993 Currently No Job on last four months I hope your return messages please

  • Your explanation is very clear and what impresses me is that you personally experimented and found that the exception of the calculation rule is not applicable for you personally. But you open to others to experiment and discover for themselves. Your way of presentation is very good for learning. Thanks

  • according to Parashar, there is an exception if the lord of the 12th placed 7 the from the 12th house then it will be wrong if we calculate 7th from the 12th lord, in this condition when the 12th lord is in 7th from 12th house then only count 4 houses from the lord of the 12th….in ur first example libra ascendant 12th house is Leo sun is the lord, he is 7 the from the 12th house in Aquarius, as per the exception we have to count 4 from the Aquarius so the UL is t=Taurus…also in the example plz check,in the Taurus AL is mentioned…..

  • Here is how to calculate : “The calculation of Upapada is very easy, simply count from 12th house to the 12th Lord. Now count as many houses from 12th lord. The house where count ends is where your Upapada is. There are a few exceptions: If the 12th lord is in the 12th house or the 6th house, then Upapada will go to the 9th house of the horoscope. If the 12th lord is in3rd house and 9th house, then Upapada will go to the 3rd house of the horoscope.”

  • I calculated according to the way u mentioned and me and the guy ended up in the same Leo sign but none of us is Leo rising tho . I also checked this way with David and Victoria Beckham couple, their sign fall in their 7th house of each other . My question is what does it mean to have same sign as a result from both partners

  • I am an aries ascendent woman. My 12th house lord Jupiter is placed in 3rd house. Acc to rules my upapada lagna is falling on 6th house Virgo. But I read somewhere that UL cannot fall on 6th house. But I dont know the exception rules, that how to determine UL in such a case. My earnest request to you is, kindly determine my correct UL and help me out. Please. 🙏
