Black magic is a well-established fact in Islam, mentioned in the Qur’an and Sunnah. It is considered a major sin and does not have any permissible act in Islam. However, those who claim to treat black magic can be right by reciting Quranic verses.
Black magic is defined as a form of magic that employs polytheistic practices, talismans, and the invocation of devils to manipulate individuals. It is haram to do amaliyat (black magic) against someone, and it can affect others. The holy Prophet was also affected by black magic.
To break the spell of black magic, one must daily recite the manzil, blow into a glass of water, and drink the water. The Holy Quran, particularly the four chapters beginning with “Qul”, is the most important source for understanding black magic in Islam.
Belief and practice in magic in Islam are widespread and pervasive, both historically and currently. Both the Quran and hadith make references to witchcraft, the evil eye, and supernatural beings known as jinn. Black magic is condemned in Islam but Muslim thinkers are unclear on how to deal with this superstitious holdover from an earlier age.
In Islamic theology, black magic is considered a vital element of everyday life and practice. Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h. warns against seven deadly acts: ascribing partners to God, magic, and killing the human self. The modern study of magic in Islam is intimately connected to the history of Orientalism, which developed during the nineteenth century. When magical rituals are appropriated, they are included in established ritual systems and provided with interpretations that are compatible with the Islamic faith.
