Degree theory is an analytical approach to astrology that adds layers of meaning to placements according to their degree. It works because astrology is a system of associations, and by examining the degree of a planet, we can gain deeper insights into our personality, strengths, and compatibility with others. The degrees in astrology refer to the placement of planets and other celestial bodies within the zodiac wheel. By understanding the significance of these degrees, we can gain deeper insights into our natal chart and how they influence our personality, life events, and compatibility with others.
The critical degrees are the first, middle, and final degrees of a sign, which are particularly potent. Planets at 0° in a natal chart take on the pure, undiluted nature of the sign. Planets from 14° to 16° have a degree of karmic completion and mastery, such as the anaretic degree (29°).
Degrees start at the beginning of the sign, not the house, and can tell us where exactly a planet is located within a sign. Depending on the planet’s degree, it can affect our life lessons and relationships.
Zodiac signs and planets fall at a specific place in the sky, known as an astrological degree. These degrees give meaning and depth to the hidden characteristics of the sign and planet, allowing us to understand their internal forces on a deeper level.
Degrees follow the order of the Zodiac, with the first degree associated with Aries and its ruling planet Mars. A birth chart wheel consists of 360 degrees, with 30 degrees per House. To create a natal chart, check your planets’ degrees, and read their meanings.

How to know planet degree in astrology?
The degree of a planet in a zodiac sign is a crucial aspect of astrology. If the chart indicates planets close to the ring, the degree can be easily determined. If not, a straight edge can be used to draw a line from the planet to the chart’s edge, indicating the degree of the planet within the given sign. For example, Mercury is 2 degrees Gemini, Jupiter is 15 degrees Scorpio, and Pluto is 28 degrees Sagittarius.
The degree of a planet is not just a number, but a story that reveals our personality, strengths, and challenges. It provides a detailed and precise reading of our astrological chart, revealing a deeper layer of our cosmic blueprint.

What are the degrees in astrology houses?
The whole sign house system, also known as the “Sign-House system”, is a 30° house division system used in Hellenistic and Indian astrology. It is believed to be the oldest form of house division and may have been developed around the 1st or 2nd century BCE. The system was passed on to the Indian and early Medieval traditions of astrology, but its transmission to India from Western locales is contested.
In the Medieval period, around the 10th century, whole sign houses fell into disuse in the western tradition. By the 20th century, it was completely unknown in the western astrological community, but it was continually used in India until the 1980s and 1990s. The distinction between equal houses and whole sign houses lies in the fact that the cusp of the 1st house is the beginning of the sign that contains the ascendant, while in equal houses the degree of the ascendant is itself the cusp of the 1st house.
There is debate surrounding the claims that whole sign houses was the original form of house division and the dominant form among ancient astrologers. Some argue that it is never explicitly mentioned in the text of any ancient astrologer when explaining how to divide up the houses, while others argue that it breaks with principles of primary motion and demotes the value of angularity.
The whole sign house movement is argued to have decontextualized Hellenistic astrological texts from those that preceded and proceeded them. In Europe, most astrologers previously associated with traditional astrology never really took up whole sign houses. Martin Gansten argues that in Valens, houses were often provisionally approximated by sign position alone, but calculation of places by degree was consistently upheld in principle as more accurate and useful.

What does planet degree mean?
Zodiac signs and planets have astrological degrees in their birth charts, which provide meaning and depth to their hidden characteristics. For example, a sun falling at zero degrees Aries represents the true essence of the sign, while 29 degrees Aries may indicate a rush to evolve into something more significant or better. These degrees are crucial in understanding the complexities of a sign and enhancing the uniqueness of individuals and birth charts. For example, a zero degrees Aries person may embrace slow growth, while a 29 degrees Aries person may push for quick progress.

How to read degrees of planets in astrology?
The degree theory in astrology focuses on the 360 degrees of the zodiac wheel, divided by 12 to determine the maximum number of degrees by sign or planet. This helps in determining one’s persona and understanding their birth chart. Sabian symbols, created by astrologer Marc Edmund Jones and clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler in 1925, represent the 360 phases that correspond with each degree on the zodiac wheel. These symbols bring imagery and assign stories to certain degrees, such as Aries representing a flock of wild geese and Gemini representing workers drilling for oil.
Which degree is good for planets?
Planets near the edges of a sign interact weakly or have a delayed influence, while those closer to the middle have a stronger interaction and more clear influence on your life. Aspects are the angles planets make with each other as they traverse the 360 degrees of the sky. There are five major aspects that have a profound influence on your life: conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition.
Conjunction occurs when two planets are within a few degrees of each other, blending their energy together. Sextile occurs when planets are 60 degrees apart, working harmoniously, often bringing about a good mood. Squares involve tension and conflict between planets, while trine brings luck and opportunity. Opposition occurs when planets are 180 degrees apart, bringing balance or creating obstacles. Understanding these aspects can help you better understand your life and the signs around you.
What is a strong degree in astrology?
Critical degrees are points within each zodiac sign with intensified astrological significance. These degrees are 0, 29, and sometimes 15 degrees, each with a unique energy and deal with beginnings, endings, and heightened traits. The first critical degree, 0 degrees, represents the beginning of something or a new cycle, carrying a purer energy and symbolizing innovation, fresh starts, and new direction. For example, a planet at 0 degrees Aries can symbolize assertiveness, innovation, and leadership.
The final degree, 29 degrees, marks the last strike in a clock, representing the close of a chapter and bringing a sense of completion or ending. Planets at 29 degrees can symbolize the pinnacle of a spiritual pursuit or emotional challenge, ready to leap forward into the energy of something new in Aries. This degree can also bring the more challenging aspects of a sign to light.

THANK YOU SO SO MUCH FOR THIS!!! I know it’s a super old article, but I’m trying to teach myself to read birth charts. everyone resource telling me what the aspects mean, but no one explains the basic math behind how the chart is broken down. It’s so obvious, but it didn’t click for me until a minute and a half into this article. Thank you!! <3
Nice article, for me a good way to describe why astrology works to people who can’t get behind the star connection thing is just to remember the fact that when astrology started being used we were relying entirely on water based clocks or the sky/stars for our clocks/cycles – astrology is essentially just a way of measuring different cycles and sub-cycles in consciousness, and the stars are like the universe’s clock so it makes sense to use them rather than building something new from the ground up. (Especially since the planets and signs already had personalities and archetypes attached to them through various myths/legends/religions – which makes the grouping of the cycles a lot easier)
What I do not understand is that the Sun in this article is represented as a CD that takes up the whole region of the sky (30°) but in reality the Sun certainly is not that big. My question is how can we say that the Sun is in another sign while in a particular sign based off of a model that is not sized proportionally?
How can you explain it like that.? First the size comparison is not good. The sun or galxies would be just a dot relative to those division of space.. The reason why they may not feel like their sun sign is because maybe their moon sign is stronger or other signs of. The other planets are stronger. Some of those planets may be selecting the sun.. Also the 30 degree space can be subdivided intoo smaller sections. Depending on which degree the planet is in that sign will also determine how that planet is resonating.
I’ve loved all your articles to this point. To which now I’m confused as to what the hell is going on. I’ve always felt that when I here a person is a few days of the cusp of the western dates, they seem to be almost fully their sun sign (ego wise). But from what you’re saying is; one, the dates are all wrong and two, people have a mix of the adjoining signs for a pretty large part of the transition. None of which really jells well with what I’ve personally observed. I’m trying to learn, though.
It is interesting how you perceive the presence, or lack thereof, of celestial bodies that define a specific zodiacal influence. The celestial bodies within a specific zodiac IS its influence. To say the absence of those celestial bodies have no bearing on the sign itself or its influence on the earth’s citizens is like saying if you remove the moon there will be no effect on the tides, our minds, our bodies, etc., and I think most of us know that is completely false. This plane has gone through many changes, vibrationally, and as a result, physically. Some wisdom teachings that were once solid (credible and constant) and seemingly absolute for a period, can and have, somewhat changed in the way such truths are expressed NOW. Markers and hard influences have softened due to, what I refer to as, “The Wild Card” period. Things are not as predictable as they once were. Changes in our skies, were and are a part, of the ushering in of this period. What does this mean zodiacally? We must rely more heavily on our intangible gifts; the hidden treasures of who we truly are. We must remember, and then apply what we have known. Humanity is now meet with a rare cycle of possibility; an evolutionary leap is upon us. The negative inherent within this possibility is an imminent end. Collectively, we are expressing capacities that exceed the boundaries of our “normal” framework; an anomaly. “How” we meet this opportunity will define who we are and what will be. So, the question remains, “will we awaken, recognize and rise to the occasion or waste this rare opportunity?
Let me tell you somethin’. My Saturn is in Aquarius in 7th house on 0 orb 13′. My 7th house is in the sign of Capricorn, so it means the ruler of the 7th is in the 7th house. My 8th house (which rules life after marriage is in the sign of Aquarius (which also means the ruler of the 8th is gone in the 7th, that is great – NOT). Yes. Like I mean that: you can bury me alive as well. Ou, it’s desirable actually.
The actual constellations aren’t really 30 degrees even the highest degree constellation is virgo and its like 45 degrees the lowest is scorpio and thats only 7 degrees this is how long the sun actually takes going through these signs virgo is 45 days long factually and scorpio is 7 days long and if theres 13 constellations along the ecliptic the path the sun takes around the earth then the automatically makes it 13 sign in astrology the astronomers proved this information a fact but many people already know about the 13 sign astrology main stream astrology is nothing but a business with a bunch a proper liars or people that are ignorant to the truths mainstream astrology is not for the benefit of a person but for manipulation and scamming people for money. Yes astrology is deep but if you know the truth about the signs its deeper and will wake alot of truth seekers up the truth changes you when you listen your gonna feel it
