A void-of-course moon is a phenomenon where the Moon is unable to make any aspect to any planet during its movement through the Zodiac, slowing down energy and making it difficult to focus on tasks. This period can be challenging for those who cannot take the day off to sleep in every time the moon is void of course. In astrology, a void-of-course moon refers to the phemonenon where the Moon does not make any aspect to any planet. The condition of being void of course was only applied to the Moon and was originally defined as occurring when the Moon was not applying to an exact Ptolemaic aspect with any other planets within the next 30 degrees, regardless of sign boundaries.
The Moon is said to be void of course in the phase after making its last major aspect to a planet during its 2 1/2-day passage through one sign until its entry into the next sign, i.e., no conjunction. After making its last aspect before leaving a zodiac sign and before entering the next sign, it enters a period called “void of course”, during which there are no lunar aspects and no more messages to send.
A Void of Course moment occurs when the Moon is about to transition out of its Sign it’s in, but because of its degree, it is no longer connecting to other planets. The Moon enters a period called “void of course” during which there are no lunar aspects and no more messages to send to us. According to astrologer Pam Ciampi in Llewellyn’s 2020 Daily Planetary Guide, “nothing will come of this”.
In horary astrology, when the Moon is void-of-course at the moment of the question, it indicates “nothing will come of the matter”. This means that motivation is low until entering the next sign, and actions run out of steam. When the Moon is void of course, it signifies a shift in the emotional tone in the stars.

How to tell if the Moon is void of course?
The Moon is considered “Void of Course” when it makes its last major aspect before changing signs. It stops being void of course once it enters the next sign. The Moon changes signs every two or two and a half days and passes through all 12 zodiac signs every 27 and 1/3 days, which is one sidereal month. To track when the Moon is void of course, use the We’Moon planner’s V/C notation and look for when the Moon enters the next sign. For example, on the 24th, the Moon goes VoC at 2:58pm, and ends at 11:36pm when it changes into the sign of Leo.
What to do during a void of course?
The Aligned Hustle Calendar is a tool for tracking the mood of the moon, indicating the void moon. This period occurs when the moon has completed its interaction with other planets and is “void of course” until it enters the next sign. During a void moon, it is ideal for quiet, head-down work, with minimal unexpected activity. However, certain activities should be avoided depending on the sign the moon is about to enter.
When the void moon is heading into Aries, it is advised to avoid starting new projects. Although the Aries energy loves to start new things, it is not recommended to charge into it early under a void moon. Once the void moon concludes and the moon is properly into an Aries sign, new projects can begin.
What is the void of course in astrology?
The Moon enters a period called “void of course” after making its final aspect before leaving a zodiac sign, causing brain fog and lack of momentum. Despite this, it can be beneficial for recharging, brainstorming, and daydreaming. The Moon can be void of course multiple times a week, lasting from a few hours to a whole day. It is crucial to watch your timing and use a Moon table to track the “VOC begins” and “VOC ends” to ensure a successful day. This period can be beneficial for recharging, brainstorming, and daydreaming, but it is not the best time to start new actions.
What does a void symbolize?
Existentialist thought often portrays the Void as the absence of inherent meaning in the universe and the individual’s struggle to find meaning in a world that offers none. Philosophers like Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre explore the Void as a fundamental aspect of the human condition, where individuals must create their own meaning in a world that offers none. Camus discusses the concept of the absurd, the conflict between humans’ desire to find meaning and the universe’s indifferent silence.
He advocates for a defiant embrace of the absurd, where freedom and meaning can be found through personal choice and action, even in the face of the Void. Sartre’s work Being and Nothingness describes human existence as “condemned to be free”, where the Void represents the nothingness at the core of existence that individuals must confront when they realize that life has no preordained purpose. He argues that consciousness is a form of nothingness, creating a fundamental gap between the self and the world, creating a sense of the Void.
What does Void of Course Moon mean spiritually?
The moon’s trajectory through the cosmos is devoid of celestial influences, resulting in a haze of indistinct luminosity and a state of profound stillness. This spiritual experience encourages rest and contemplation, thereby facilitating a more profound comprehension of the universe.
How long does void of course last?
The lunar cycle in a Sign can last up to 2 ½ days, with no planets applying to that Sign for a while. The Moon is in Virgo, and most other planets connect with it through Sign or degree base Aspects. From 00 to 20 degrees, the Moon connects with most of the world, but as it gets to the last 10, there are no other celestial bodies at a higher degree. The previous configuration would be a Trine from the Moon in Virgo at 18 degrees, with Uranus in Taurus at that exact point.
What to avoid during void of course?
During a Void of Course Moon, it is advisable to avoid signing contracts, attending important meetings, launching new projects, or making major purchases. Understanding planetary positions can provide context to the implications of a Void of Course Moon, as Mercury Retrograde can amplify its effects. Mercury Retrograde often leads to external challenges in communication and technology, while a Void of Course Moon tends to create more internal struggles and feelings of “stuckness”. It is important to be aware of the broader planetary positions and prepare accordingly.
What does void of course moon mean in horary?
The presence of a Void of Course Moon in a horary chart indicates the possibility of an unanticipated postponement in the progression of events or developments. This is in contrast to the immediate succession of sudden alarms or despair, which are more commonly associated with the Void of Course Moon.
What is void of course moon in traditional astrology?
The Void of Course Moon is defined as the moment when the Moon reaches the zenith of its orbital cycle within a given sign, such as 28° Virgo, where it does not form a conjunction with another planet before transitioning out of Virgo. This definition is widely accepted in the relevant academic literature.

In early 2021 I did several followup episodes either entirely on the void of course Moon, or where I touched on it again as part of a continuing dialogue over the past few months about the origins of that concept and some related ones. Here are the main episodes in order: youtube.com/watch?v=dZ4WQExbelI youtube.com/watch?v=0WyszB9kXOI youtube.com/watch?v=KOYp51hkDI4 youtube.com/watch?v=Wc86LAI2vXc youtube.com/watch?v=uhY-tLDIw9o Worth checking out some of those, since this has been an area where there has been a lot of additional research and discussion on the podcast recently.
One thing that I learned from John Frawley is that in 17th century English, the word ‘hardly’ had a slightly different meaning than the way we use it today. When we hear, ‘the moon void of course means things go hardly forward’, we think basically it’s dead in the water so why bother; but in Lily’s time ‘hardly’ meant ‘with difficulty’, so ‘go hardly forward’ would mean it can be accomplished but with much difficulty (it would be hard).
It’s pretty rare for the moon to not apply to any other planet for a full 30 degrees, isn’t it? Also, I think that, with the first definition in mind, it would make sense why some astrologers who typically follow the second definition to not consider what would otherwise be a VOC moon a being VOC if she immediately applies to aspect another planet upon entering the next sign.
Thanks so much for this clarification. In terms of the second definition (the modern one) would it be correct to say that from this perspective the Moon is going to be Void of Course about every 2.5 days at the end of every single sign – unless it happens to make an exact aspect with another planet at 29°59′ of a sign?
Thank you, Chris! I seem to have a 2nd definition natal void of course moon at 29’ Leo, applying to Mercury RX at 9’ Virgo. I read somewhere that these moons make it difficult or impossible to practice magic successfully . As someone who newly identifies as a witch, this seems like important information *yikes*. I am wondering how valid this is and will continue my research 🙏🏻
Interesting article. I would be interested in a podcast devoted to the subject presenting the “substanitive issues” exploring what and why one approach may be “better” than the other. In my business as a real estate professional, I am always (daily) referring to Maynard’s Celestial Guide AND a possibly lesser known, Polaris “Good Timing Guide” by Madeline C Gerwick (polarisbusinessguides.com) which, I BELIEVE, uses the LILY Void of Course in the timings. The Polaris guide is designed for the “layman” (IMO) who just wants to know what’s a “good time” and what’s not. While I lean towards the use of Maynard’s mostly because of the issue of final aspect in the timing. I refer to both guides when signing contracts, listing properties, marketing campaigns, important phone calls and conferences, etc. and sometimes the information is conflicting.
