Vulnera Sanentur isn’t correct if you listen closely, and it is over Rickman’s bad Latin pronunciation. I had to listen to it numerous times to catch what he meant. What he was trying to pronounce was the Latin for Velum Suture, with velum being skin, of course. It would have been something like Velumera Suturentur. The British are bad to drop their Ts.
Obviously being a little picky here, but: 1.) Protego Diabolica – one thing you didn’t mention is that the spell seems to kind of build up and either multiplies it’s own power or draws power from people it affects or maybe the ambient magic around it, either way in the one case we’re given of it being used, it seems to grow larger and larger as time goes on. 2.) Fiendfyre – idk where I read this, but I’m like 95% sure that the flames produced by this spell burn hotter and hotter the more anger/rage/malice/general dark intent you put into the casting of the spell. 3.) Reducto – (I don’t even really like this spell because it’s Ginny’s “specialty” and I just don’t like Ginny very much, but it’s a ridiculously powerful spell nonetheless) I think it actually just literally causes the target to implode. 4.) Firestorm – (getting REAL picky here) Your description of it feels a little off when you start by saying it produces a “ring” of fire. You aren’t WRONG by any means, but I think it might be more accurate to say it produces a column of controllable raging inferno. Even then, I’m not sure if it specifically has to be in that form, Dumbledore is supposedly the best elemental manipulator of any wizard in history (that we know of) so it’s very possible that he just decided to make it into a huge column/ring simply because that would be the most helpful form for it to take in that moment. 5.) Flipendo – I’m pretty sure that one is actually a play on words, as in I think the point of the spell is that it causes a target to “flip end over end”.
I feel like I wanted the spells that actually were casted not effects like the shields around Hogwarts cause we do actually know what spells are used to make that shield so alot of these are even spells there descriptions of what spells do or have done which I think is a very weird take on what is a spell idk why I’m even writing this😅

I think Dumbledore advocated for everyone calling him by his name for two reasons. First of all, fear of a name adds to fear of the thing itself, but, more importantly, if everyone was saying it all the time the Taboo Curse would be pretty damn useless. “Hey, Tom, which one of the 5,000 or so people in London who just said your name should we go get?” “You dare?!”
I believe the Taboo curse was only put on the name Voldemort after he took over the Ministry of Magic. It seems you need the authority or power of the Ministry to enact such country wide curses. Before that, it was merely a tradition and fear among wizarding kind who were afraid of him so much that they didn’t want to even say his name.
Hello there, I come from Greece and I find very interesting the fact that we have a similar custom in our country for quite a long time! Since the ancient times, Greeks were avoiding to say out loud the name of something or someone they feared. The idea behind it was that, by saying the name of an illness or a bad person you were actually calling them to find you. This notion combined with the fact that Ancient Greeks had a God, or a Semi-God or a Nymphe, or a Spirit for almost everything, and the fear that they could accidentally anger them and commit ‘hubris” made this “protective measure” really compulsory for religious and superstitious people, meaning almost everyone in the ancient world. This notion was rooted so deep that even up to these days my grandmothers, they would never say “cancer” or “Satan” or “Devil” but they would say instead the “disease” or “the one who’s out of here” and they would react exactly the same way Mrs Weasley reacts to the word “Lord Voldemort”.

In the Harry Potter universe, the taboo did not go into effect until the death eaters head overrun the ministry. Beforehand, it was only considered socially taboo to say lord Voldemort‘s name out loud. That’s the reason why people surrounding Albus Dumbledore, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin or Harry himself always winced every time the name was said by one of them. (I’ll never forget when I first read Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and noted how amazed Harry was when Lupin used the name the first time.) The notion that the characters were protected against the taboo by the presence of the Fidelius charm easily explains the reason why they could use the name freely while they were hiding out at Grimauld Place. It also suggests that they might have been at liberty to speak it out loud while hiding out at Shell Cottage later on even if they didn’t.
It wasn’t said during or after the first wizarding war simply out of fear ( or for some, respect) but once Voldemort rose to power a second time then he put the taboo curse on it and he could find anyone who spoke his name that wasn’t protected by certain charms. Note, this didn’t happen until after Dumbledores death and I believe that’s because he was the only wizard Voldemort was afraid of and Voldemort knew that Dumbledore would warn Harry and everyone else and tell them how to protect themselves. Makes sense because the main reason the Taboo was put on the name was to help find Harry and Dumbledore always protected Harry that’s why Voldemort waited until after his death to attempt this taboo. So I believe you are correct my friend…at least that’s what I’ve gotten out of the four reads of the book series that I’ve completed 🤣
i havent watched the article yet but i think i have a pretty believable theory, why no one says voldemorts name is because the order of the pheonix says it,and im guessing that the name was also tabooed in the first war aswell and when someone said the name, the death eaters would come to kill you, and that spread so much fear that no one said it
I think the thumbnail for this article gives a good clue for an answer that doesn’t involve a taboo curse. Members of the Order of the Phoenix most likely were the people who were least afraid of using his name unapologetically in the first place, even though others may have said it a bit fearfully at first. Then in war times, the ones who used the name (Order members) also tended to be the ones who died. I think the spurious correlation instilled in the minds of people would be powerful. “They all kept saying that name and now they’re all dead!” Remember, Hogwarts teaches magic, but basic statistics and science of knowledge are woefully neglected.
I like the idea of Dumbledore giving the name less power but using is freely, however he is a stronger wizard than most. Christ cast out demons etc. that his disciples couldn’t. I always thought it was kinda like a shame thing amongst wizards, where they wanted to bury the fact that their community had wizard Hitler on the loose against muggles not that long ago, kinda like how anything even joking about Nazis is super banned in Germany. While perusal I was wondering when Harry and Hagrid are having a meal in the first movie, Hagrid explains what happened to Harry partners, when Hagrid saids voldemort then Harry saids it. You said he placed the taboo curse on his name during the events of the last book correct? So then why were people still scared to say it when Harry first found out he was a wizard? Never properly explained? Uhhh Yes, yes it is explained lol, and the answer to why you shouldnt say his name is actually very simple. I forget when exactly the issue and topic of why it’s not a good idea to say his name is first brought up, or who says it, but it is stated that the name Voldemort has a trace on it, much the same way that under age witches and wizzards have a trace on them so that the ministry always knows where they are, and if they do magic outside of Hogwarts. Voldemorts name has basically the same kind of trace on it, so that when someone says his name, said person can be traced to their current location. The difference between the underage trace and the name trace of course being that the trace on Voldemorts name alerts the death eaters, and the underage Trace is handled by the ministry. So the reason that everyone would never said his name even after he “died” the first time, was because the same trace was present before he died as well. So everyone got used to not saying his name before he died, and it just became a normal habit for no one to say his name that persisted for even the 13 years he was gone. One very clear cut example of the trace on his name, and just how accurate the trace was is right after they left Bill and Fleur’s wedding and were in the coffee shop. They are sitting at the table talking and Hermione says Voldemort in conversation, and literally 20 seconds later the two death eaters walk into the shop and attack them.
