What are the 7 luminaries in astrology?

The seven classical planets, which are easily visible with the naked eye, were known to ancient astrologers as the Moon, Mercury, Venus, The Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. These planets were often referred to as “the lights” or “luminaries”. In astrology, planets have a different meaning than astronomical understandings. Before telescopes, the night sky consisted of fixed stars and moving objects, or “wandering stars”. The Ancient Greeks, who learned from the Babylonians, included the Sun and Moon as the Sacred 7 Luminaires/7 Heavens, making a total of seven planets.

The ancient Babylonians, Greeks, Persians, Romans, Medieval Christians, and others thought of the 7 Classical Planets as gods and named their 7 days of the week after them. Astrologers retain this definition of the 7 Classical Planets today.

To ancient astrologers, the planets represented the will of deities and their direct influence on human affairs. Modern astrologers view the planets as basic drives or urges in the subconscious, or energy flow regulators representing dimensions of experience. They express themselves with different qualities in the 12 signs of the zodiac and in the 12 houses, and are related to each other through aspects.

  • Your mother sounds lovely. I’m liking your take on things, & wanted to share my sun moon if I may. Sun/Venus conj in 3rd ♒️, has no obvious connection to moon/Mars conj in 5th ♈️directly opposite Uranus. ♏️ rising. Any thoughts would always be appreciated but not essential 😉 of corse! (What are the benefits/ differences of equal house I wonder?) thanks x

  • This was my favourite lesson so far, thank you Jaime! I loved all your fiery energy, and as an earth heavy native, I could really use some of it 😉 You really helped me understand how to work with my Aries moon, and I have been putting into practice some of your suggestions. So many thanks to both you and Stormie. Lots of love to astrology peeps everywhere 💖

  • Hello, I had a question about the Sun in Libra and the Moon in Aquarius. In the class on dignities and debilities, we briefly touched on a Sun in detriment in Aquarius and it was said that the Sun’s power is somewhat moderated by the cold Ruler (Saturn). But how does the Sun in fall (in Libra) or the Sun in detriment (in Aquarius) affect the ego? Is this already included in the usual description of Sun in Libra or Sun in Aquarius or should you take this into account when interpreting? Thank you!
