Killian, the mascot of Iona University, is an Irish-Gaelic warrior who represents the school’s Irish tradition and personifies strength. Modeled loosely on various Gaelic characters, Killian enrolled at Iona many years ago and loved it so much. The Gael, a symbol of the Irish tradition of Iona, is consistent with the school motto, certa bonum certamen, which translates to “fight the good”.
Iona University, a private Roman Catholic university with a main campus in New Rochelle, New York, was founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Theological Seminarians. The Iona Gaels men’s basketball team represents Iona University in NCAA Division I competition, competing in the Metro Atlantic.
