Climate change is linked to the development of marine heatwaves and cold spells, which are periods of exceptionally cold water that can harm or help ecosystems they hit. These extreme weather patterns are caused by air circulation patterns in our atmosphere and are being investigated for their development, prediction, and impact on the atmosphere.
The impact of heat waves and cold spells on mortality has become a major public health problem worldwide, especially among older adults living in low- to middle-income countries. A deep learning computer system developed by Rice University engineers has been used to predict extreme weather events up to five days in advance using minimal information. The system has been successful in predicting extreme cold spells up to nine months in advance, with results more in line with expectations for delayed effects.
In all provinces, significant mortality-increasing effects are found for below-optimal conditions. Deep learning accurately forecasts heat waves and cold spells, and Capsule neural network predicts extreme weather with WWII-era analog forecasts. However, there is a lack of understanding of how these patterns develop, how they can be predicted, and how climate change will affect our atmosphere.
In conclusion, the development of heatwaves and cold spells is influenced by ocean flows and sea surface heat fluxes. As global temperatures continue to rise, it is crucial to understand how these patterns develop, predict, and affect our environment.
📹 Injuries more common in heat waves than cold spells
Even during the heat, people still love to exercise. But doctors say injuries and death are more common during extreme heat than …
Are more heatwaves predicted?
As the Earth’s climate warms, hotter-than-usual days and nights are becoming more common, leading to longer, more frequent, and intense heat waves. These extreme heat events can result in more heat-related illnesses and deaths, especially if people and communities do not take steps to adapt. The High and Low Temperatures indicator examines trends over time in four key characteristics of heat waves in the United States: frequency, duration, season length, and intensity. Even small increases in extreme heat can lead to increased deaths and illnesses.
What are the predictable ways that heat flows?
Heat transfer occurs via three primary mechanisms: conduction (transfer through direct contact), convection (flow of air, liquid, or magma), and radiation (transfer of energy through the interaction of substances).
What are hot and cold spells?
Hot and cold flashes during menopause are believed to be caused by hormonal changes that affect the hypothalamus, the brain’s part responsible for regulating temperature. These fluctuations cause the hypothalamus to believe the body is too warm or too cool, triggering hot and cold flashes to rebalance the body’s temperature. In a hot flash, blood vessels beneath the skin widen to expel excessive body heat, while sweat glands release perspiration to cool the skin. In a cold flash, the brain tells blood vessels to constrict, creating an immediate chill, and skeletal muscles to contract, causing uncontrollable shivering.
To manage hot and cold flashes, users can start a cooling or warming session on the Wave with the press of a button or tap in a mobile app. These precisely engineered temperature sensations offer immediate relief that is safe, natural, and discreet. Embr Wave harnesses the body’s natural ability to respond to and comfort itself with temperature, allowing even a small amount of warming or cooling on one part of the body to alter the way you experience temperature throughout your body. This localized thermal sensations activate an instinctive response that tells the brain to make you feel better, delivering instant relief from hot and cold flashes.
How do you predict heat?
Meteorologists utilize historical data, weather models, and satellite observations to predict the occurrence of heat waves and other extreme temperatures. This is achieved through the analysis of temperature, pressure, and humidity patterns, which allows for the identification of potential conditions.
Does global warming cause cold spells?
The phenomenon of global warming is responsible for an increase in extreme weather events, including the occurrence of extreme winter cold spells. The development of effective modelling tools is of paramount importance for the prediction of the evolution of these events in the coming years, thus enabling a more effective preparation for them.
What are the effects of heat and cold waves?
The incidence of heat and cold waves has the potential to increase energy consumption, due to the reliance of people on heating systems. This can result in strain on power grids, and in some cases, power outages.
What is the impact of heat waves and cold spells on cause specific mortality in the city of São Paulo Brazil?
Heat waves and cold spells are linked to cause-specific deaths in São Paulo, with higher temperatures indicating a higher risk of death on heat wave days. Heat waves are more severe in ischemic stroke than hemorrhagic stroke. The effects of heat waves are more pronounced in ischemic stroke. Copyright © 2024 Elsevier B. What is a heat wave and a cold spell?
A heat wave (HW) is a sequence of at least three days with a temperature maximum (Tmax) above 30. 0 °C, while a cold spell (CS) is a sequence of at least three days with a Tmax of less than 30. 0 °C. These definitions have been widely used in previous studies. The site uses cookies, and all rights are reserved for text and data mining, AI training, and similar technologies. How predictable are heat waves?
Weather models predict expected temperatures at specific locations and times, with accuracy ranging from 10-14 days. They can help inform action when a heatwave is imminent. Climate models predict long-term environmental changes, ranging from decades to millennia. They can assist urban planning in preparing for future heat extremes. A new area of prediction is seasonal and sub-seasonal timescale (S2S), forecasting weeks to months in advance. These models, often climate models, run operationally more like weather models. They can inform early messaging and budgeting decisions in preparation for the heat season.
How to forecast heat waves?
IMD uses a network of surface observatories across India to collect data on temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed, and direction. They use historical daily maximum temperature data to calculate the normal maximum temperature and define heat wave criteria. IMD scientists then use this data to generate numerical weather prediction models for short-range, extended range, and seasonal forecasts. The models can only predict parameters conducive to a heat wave.
Heat wave data accuracy has increased by about 50 percent in the past decade, likely due to more data, better data processing methods, and research into the physical mechanisms behind the phenomena. Heat waves can now be predicted 24 hours earlier with 88 accuracy. A paper published in Earth and Space Science evaluated the efficiency of various models in predicting heat waves in India.
How do cold spells impact humans?
The meta-analyses revealed a correlation between cold spells and elevated mortality rates from nonaccidental causes, cardiovascular diseases, and other factors. This association was quantified by random-effects models, which yielded a summary rate ratio of 1. 10 (95% CI: 1. 04, 1. 17).

Why India will See More Heatwave Days in 2024 | Vantage with Palki Sharma India is bracing for a long and grueling summer.
In Berhampur, Bhubaneswar temp reaches upto 45-48 degrees with 85-90% humidity. It’s boiling. We have spoiled our country, there are hardly any trees and it’s a concrete jungle with worst city planning over decades. Now nothing will change in older cities unfortunately. and our massive population and unlawful citizens are also the cause for this.
Our ECI totally ignored heat wave which is usual in three months from April – June .It is an annual occurance .Elections should have commence April first week and complete by May 10 instead of April 19 and stretching until June 1st and counting on 4th June .ECI (Election Commission’s) drawn out a unwise and foolish General Elections 2024 time table or schedule .Which Genl. Elections did stretch beyond May ? (Except 9th or 10th General Election, 1991 due to tragic assassination of PM hopeful (late)Rajiv Gandhi). Thus pls expect lower turnout of voteing percentage in the Lokshaba or General Elections 2024 (not cross beyond 70,%.
It’s gone. My native village now feels like a furnace. It used to have lush green paddy fields, lot of plants and tress with 7 lakes. ALL GONE. Greed to construct apartments and shift that money to overseas.Even Indian politicians have their children and grandchildren studying overseas. They want native Indians to live and study in this extreme weather to serve te nepo kids of political families. We are shafted.
India has done its best to cover all its beautiful fertile soil with tarmac. Because “growth,” and IMF standards. It’s doing its best to desertify the entire subcontinent, including Nepal’s himlayas now being smashed to cement by Indian industrialists. Say “no” and you’re a regressdive feudal. Well done, India. You are so marabhoomified, abrahamified and totally rich.
Yes. Our people due to British education and culture invasion, lost touch with nature. Nature is part of vedic culture. People knew its importance and gave first place. British education undermined it and there were no attempts to change it after independence. In my childhood my paternal uncle used to take me around the plants in village yo water them. There were many trees in our courtyard which grown with drained utensiles water etc. they got vitamins feom that water. Nowadays only concrete jungle, there is no space for rain water pits and harvesting. So it has to start again from villages taking into confidence all the sarpanches
Heat waves can also be a result of cutting trees and forests…Guys, plant more trees…they gives us oxygen, fruits, vegetables, clean air and many more things…We’ve to protect them….Heat waves is not a small issues, many people in our India are dying because of heat strokes every day…So, drink sufficient water even if you aren’t thirsty….Use shelters, curtains and keep your home cool, Save animals…Provide them a shelter and give them plenty of water, Take cool baths and protect yourself…No one else gonna do it.
-Watermanagement by water storage for mainly cities and agriculture, -Protection of (large) trees as trees create water (really!), -diversification of water usage per hour per sector, -Siesta´s during the day, -please don´t use mechanical fans as they just move air and don´t cool the air and therefore only consumes electricity / the same effect can be created by use of a normal paper fan (cooling of air is almost not possible unless using a ton of energy), -Create more waterways that penatrate deeper into land, -DON’T POLLUTE THE RIVERS!, -plant shading trees beside small streams of water as it evaporates less when it covers the body of water, -Cover soil with grass and other dried plant material against draught (that don’t burn easily) -Paint the roofs of building white (albedo effect), -build buildings according to aerodynamics to use the air stream through and beside buildings to push the warmer air out of the building (is already being done in Arabic and Sahel countries), -reduce livestock as livestock consumes SO MUCH WATER / or change the water usage of these animals (see link with diversification). -follow a vegeterian/ vegan diet. These are some ideas but instead, please continue fighting between majid and mandir becaus that is what the country really needs during the sixth extinction event…..
They found out just a few days ago that it is impossible for India to make semiconductor chips because there is not enough water, you need HUGE amount of pure water to make chips, for example, in Taiwan, 50% of water is used to make chips. This is another reason that India should make friend with China, that can provide chips for India in the years ahead.
We have to change timing of shop and offices. Shop should open early at 6 and close at 10 and again open at 5 and close at 11, similarly office should open at 5 and close at 10 pm. Till heatwave continues and school and college should remain close. All non essential meetings and training should be postponed.
Schools are also running, the government should look forward it, if students gets sick then they will not be able to study properly and there will be no benefit in opening the schools and the result of the students will not be good enough, if the temperature is higher than other years then schools should be closed before June
Election may shift to winter because of heat wave . Heat wave is very patrn of climate condition .it can change by snow mountain in a cities how is snow mountain to create high close chamber and create snow inside it and drag the cool wind to the cities. So the cities will be cooler . Second covering the cities with glass fibers also give cool ness in the cities .
In summary: wet places will get warmer and wetter; hot places will get hotter and drier; temperate places will get more pleasant. There are ecological planting techniques for ameliorating desert conditions, but they are mostly small scale, run by focussed individuals. Most governments are bitching and whining about climate change but taking the opportunity to tax processes that create CO2 without using any of the revenue to introduce ecological methods that ameliorate the negative effects of climate change.
We are so glad to thank World Economic Forum to create such opportunities, such that we have such Geo Engineering going on every corner of the world. Aersonal spray from Aeroplane will create more humidity below the atmosphere. I am so glad to pay my income to direct & in direct taxes to keep my govt not to speak about this. In the same note I strongly suggest HPV vaccine to all the world to keep people in the plan of WEF’s “Global reset”.
Industrialiation policies have been a mistake made for decades now…wanting to be like the West has had devastating results, but nobody wanted to listen, driven by ego…those that do not want to isten to well-meant advice will have to feel it…India was once a green gem and it is not sure what will happpen to it when the Himalayas loose their snow…
Every single day of this extremely worst heat 42 to 45 degrees in Pune Maharshtra citizens are struggling to survive through where sometimes it gets suffocating and unable to breathe properly, the concerned electricity divisions are depriving consumers of basic ammenity for survival through it by cutting off electricity for hours together every single day of this worst heat wave. When the electricity does switch on it is given on completely low voltage on certains switches/ areas. People’s fridges, fans and other devices are getting damaged or bursting cause of this. Such extreme heat and no voltage or such low voltage causing electronics to all of a sudden experience this type of intermitent power supply are causing fire outbreaks. But do they care that there might be old people, children, those who are already unwell, poorer people who hardly have 1 fan to survive through this heat? As long as they are comfortable in Air Conditioned offices with generator back up and then go to homes with ACs in all rooms it doesn’t matter to them or any other.
What we need is better and more efficent public transpirtation and less number of cars on the street and more sustainable urbanisation and better water harvesting systems and some kind of control over our explosive population and the development of tier one and three cities and better water resource management. aforestation and green energy Perhaps this is a big ask but if we dont do it then several years from now water and food will become the new currency
And our government and supreme court supports “human development” and cut down more trees and mountains. In Maharashtra, an average sanitation worker earns between 50 and 70k rupees but do you know what they do? These workers outsource that work to someone else and in return, they give them a percentage of their own salaries. And these outsourced workers burn garbage thereby increasing population and greenhouse effects. Corporations are aware of this but turn a blind eye. Rampant permissions are given to property developers. The government has concretised the roads leading to groundwater depletion and no way to replenish it as everywhere there are buildings made of concrete. This is what happens when a country has too many ppl with limited opportunities and a bad education system. We do see changes in the young generation in terms of awareness, but it’s too less as environmental laws are not only not enforced by the government on all, the parents and elders don’t follow it or teach their young. Only a few ppl do that.
What are you saying!! Due to heat wave we need extra coal consumption for electricity 😅 thats kinda crazy . India is worlds 2 most carbon emitting and our economy is down already dont worry. It just climate chage and the Hindu kush and the Himalayan range are just melting away. Stay ready for some crazy summer flooding in the plans folks.
2:35 in the article. Power consumption will be ramped up so more Coal will be needed. That is the problem. Coal is probably the worst source of energy for electricity. It produces the most Green House Gases depending on it’s chemical content. But it is are more damaging than Natural Gas, while being far cheaper per kilowatt of energy produced. But that’s the catch. More greenhouse gases, more climate change and higher CO2 and more need for refrigeration so more coal is burned. India is of course trying to be a World Power, with an emerging technology sector and a growing military and an increasing economy. But growth at what cost? Following the Carbon Intensive Growth fueled Economic model as the West from the 19th century and China from the past 35 years. Or Brazil too using the land that was Amazon Rainforest for farming and cattle? Same trade off. Short term economic gain with longer term ecological harm. Modi is a bit like Jair Bolsonaro was. He was a climate change denier and a proponent for cutting the Amazon for land use. Now we have Lula da Silva trying to reverse that path. Still Brazil has seen a lot of flooding that never occurred before. Seems that missing Rainforest was a great storage of water on the land as well as carbon sequestration. This stuff counts for something. It’s not possible to have a sustainable economy if the weather becomes so radically diverse, ranging from heat to fires to floods to droughts. It’s too difficult with current methods of farming to support large scale agriculture in this dynamic and dystopian climate.
Didi toh apke itne followers hai. Aap log kuch karte kyu nahi isske liye. Chaliye ped lagate hai. Government ko ped lagane par majboor karte hai. Special zameen sirf tree plantation ke liye allot honi chahiye Har locality me minimum 10% of land area me green trees hone chahiye… Please I request you all influencers Kuch kariye sab ko join kijiye apne saath 5 years ke baad dopahar ko 12-5 bahar nahi nikal payenge 🙏
Hello Ms. Palki Sharma, I always watch your articles which are very informative, illustrative & motivational in some ways. I would like to urge you with reference to this particular article & other articles which you might publish in future on environmental topics. We humans are only talking about how to save or protect ourselves & other humans. we never talk about showing equal empathy & giving equal consideration to the animals which are around us, such as strays & birds. They are highly dependent on us, especially the strays (dogs, cats, cows, etc.). When we are going to experience such a harsh weather ahead, it’s our moral duty to take care of them as well. Doing some very small, easy & noble deeds such as providing food & water to those voiceless souls can make their lives little better. Humans are not the only claimant of the resources on the planet, animals too are. Such extreme weather conditions are caused by all wrongdoings of humans, but all the other species are suffering & will suffer because of us. So, the least we can do is our tiny contribution by being kind to them. We owe this to the society & the society also includes those animals, birds, trees around us, it doesn’t mean society of humans. Through your articles, you can educate, inspire & motivate people to think beyond the materialistic things & make this planet a better place for all species. After all, we all are creation of that one Lord Mighty. Please consider my suggestion to add this aspect in your content.
India doesn’t know to adhere to climate change it’s only capable to send the satellite to chandrayaan, so money wasted there is not going to benefit, And Isro is only a manufacturing company for a product, we don’t have any machinery to produce artificial water or use sea water deposited into dry land or died lakes many cooler places will not be able to save, so we need not want to take a advice frm a Pm for education as all are not educated in the centre and the states were the ruling party is not collaborating according to climate changes, Too much fooling around happening
