The Cleveland Browns were founded in 1946 by a fan vote in homage to their first coach, Paul Brown. Brown initially vetoed the name but it stuck. To poke fun at Brown, Brownie the Elf was created. During games, Brownie would mimic Brown and slam his hat if he got mad. The team has a new midfield logo at FirstEnergy Stadium featuring a mascot that has been part of the franchise since the very beginning.
The Browns have used a brownie elf as a franchise icon since its early days. Owner Arthur McBride named the team after its coach, Paul Brown, but needed a mascot to market it. The name Brownie comes from Scottish folklore, where elf-like creatures helped with household chores as long as little goodies were left for them.
The story of Brownie the Elf began long before the Cleveland Browns adopted the little creature. The team was named after their owner and legendary coach Paul Brown. The Rams left Cleveland in the early 1940s, and local papers started a campaign to adopt Brownie the Elf as a team mascot.
Cleveland adopted Brownie the Elf as a team mascot not long after its 1946 founding, and he served the team well before his deemphasis in the NFL. The latest caricature of Brownie was revealed last week as the team’s new midfield logo at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Let’s face it, mascots and team names in the AFC North, outside of the Browns, are disappointing. Bengals? Meh, Paul Browns’ high school team. Steelers? the superheating of carbon and iron. Really, that’s your team name? Ravens? a line from a poet. That really screams athletic dominance. I’ll take the surname of the Godfather of professional football thank you.
