What is the Mars effect in astrology?
The Mars effect is a statistical correlation between athletic success and the position of Mars relative to the horizon at time and place of birth. First reported by French psychologist Michel Gauquelin in 1955, Gauquelin suggested that a significant number of sports champions were born just after Mars rises or culminates. He divided the ecliptic plane into twelve sectors, identifying two key sectors of statistical significance.
Gauquelin’s work was accepted by psychologist Hans Eysenck, but later attempts to validate and replicate the effect have produced uneven results due to disagreements over data selection and analysis. The availability and accuracy of time and place of birth data are crucial to studies, as is the criterion of “eminence”. Later research claims to explain the Mars effect by selection bias, favoring champions born in a key Mars sector and rejecting those not from the sample. Gauquelin’s work was not limited to the Mars effect, but he singled out “highly significant statistical correlations between planetary positions and the birth times of eminently successful people”.

Chris I laughed SO hard when you said, “Are we emotionally and spiritually prepared to read Valens?” 🤣😂😂 This was alao me right before I started your course (which was AMAZING by the way!). Thank you both for this lovely convo! Sylvi has such a way of bringing everything back to the duality of what is life 💜
Hey guys – I was just looking at musician Tracy Chapman’s natal chart and thought it might be interesting when considering how Mars applies to the life of the native. Tracy has a lot of action in the Mars-ruled signs, with a stellium in Aries (Mars at 0, Sun at 10, and Jupiter/Mercury conjunct at 26/27) and Moon and Neptune in Scorpio. The song “Fast Car” speaks of needing to make split-second decisions to escape being permanently trapped by the compulsion to enable the darknesses/addictions in others that are holding us back in life. Such a perfect Sun/Moon placement for the person who gave voice to this brilliant and timeless piece of music.
i have been waiting the malefic planet part of this series since it began cause my chart is really just mars and saturn trying to see who can do more damage via angularity/rulership and im very excited to finally crown a winner lmao. thank you /again/ for all that you do and offer this community w this website!! 🙂
Sylvi – is AWESOME – calm as talking about Mars – LOVE her. I have Mars in Capricorn in the 8th House and I am sure this planet has saved my life many times – just stopping and thinking things out – instead of reacting. Stamina and courage and tenacity – not getting lost in emotion, being logical, practical and making hard decisions with the right data. I am often the one who is saying ‘hang on hang on calm down – go back to the beginning and tell me what happened” trying to calm people down and stop them from reacting in a very violent Mars manner. I am also in my local Fire Brigade – and my great skill is ‘situational awareness’ I get that from Mars – it is like a game of chess – survey the area – what can hurt you – where are the potential dangers – what steps can we take to avoid the dangers. Thank you both this was great. My greatest loves have had Natal Mars placed right on my Natal Venus – magnetic attraction and great you know what…
I love the commentary on Mars being the ‘Ride or Die’ friend. So true. My friends know I can handle extreme situations. I have bailed them out, been the backup bouncer, the protector. Aries Mars conjunct Jupiter, where there is a will there is a way. I have intervened in suicidal situations with friends and family… crazy intense situations. Aries Mars trine Sag Neptune/Rising, conjunct Jupiter, sextile Gem Sun/Mercury, square Cancer Saturn. Mars is busy in my chart, a def asset even though sect is wrong, I think Jupiter gives it a boost, and 5th house is a good place.
Out of bounds Mars rising in Cap here (con asc). Can confirm that my hair throws red no matter what colour I dye it so these days I tend to go for a red tint. I still get acne at 35 years of age and especially when I eat dairy. I’ve been told I always “look busy” or that I’m “going somewhere”. I naturally walk fast and have lots of scars – especially burns ones from when I was younger. My partner tells me all the time that I’m clumsy – true- but it’s usually because I’m trying to do multiple things at once.
Mars to me is like a Father that just wants his child to be successful. What ever you want, he is like “Go! Do it! Do that thing you really want!” Its danger is that Mars does not care what is moral and what is not. He just wants you to fulfil your desires. So yes Mars might get you in a fight but he is also the one who wakes you up in the morning. The one that helps fight what ever obstacle is facing you. He is the one who makes you stand up for yourself and leave that job, relationship or whatever is making you miserable. Just make sure you let your Mars have his victories and dare to do something tiny (breaking a plate, running in the woods, talking loudly or being loud in general) so he want have force you take drastic and dangerous actions.
I woke up unusually early and thought I’d listen. I drifted back to sleep and dreamt we were sitting around a picnic table, a waitress brought us tea. You two were chatting away. I felt really grateful that you agreed to meet me here and share your insights. I kept waiting for a break in the convo to say thanks but none came. Other people started joining, sitting around the table. Then Sylvie got up & while still talking, climbed a tree and was swinging from the branches (I’ll relisten, I suspect arborist had been mentioned) while talking about liking physical work. I kept wanting to suggest catering, it’s so physically demanding. The whole thing was delightful and funny. Thanks guys! 😁✨
Very insightful! Though, this episode should’ve been filmed during a bar fight Good to know that I’ll be experiencing plenty of road rage when mars goes into my first house in my Mars year this month Edit: I just wanted to let you know, that the reason that somebody might try to learn motorcycle riding while profected Mars transits their first house cusp may correlate with the fact that Mars is squaring their fourth house cusp.
(apologies in advance for how many comments i leave on this article) the bit about courage in the face of danger is reminding me of a quote from poet Richard Siken, who’s got mars in scorpio, that says: “We have not touched the stars, nor are we forgiven, which brings us back to the hero’s shoulders and the gentleness that comes, not from the absence of violence, but despite the abundance of it.” feels very fitting for mars in it’s water sign lol.
Scorpio rising here with Mars confirmed as my nativity ruler due to my sun and moon both being placed in cadent houses. Yes I watched that episode 😉 As someone truly ruled by Mars, I can attest to the intense difficulty this planet can cause in life. At the same time, it’s been my greatest gift, as it bestows warrior-like resolve when it comes to physical endurance and dealing with stressful situations. The sense of paranoia and fear, no matter how good I may believe I feel in any moment, is always lurking in the background. Mars is always on the edge, surveying, ready to fight, to protect, to defeat the enemy. Imagine this, as these are my Mars aspects: Mars Conjunct Mercury – ADHD city! Hyperactive mind and hands. Too many ideas! Mars Conjunct Pluto – Beast Mode Archetype – Take the warrior energy of Mars and combine it with Darth Vader. Yes, running away is the right instinct. People literally look at me sometimes in complete disbelief. It’s a mix of intrigue, attraction, repulsion and confusion, all at the same time. I feel that way all the time. Mars Trine Moon – Yep, that’s a good one and I think is part of my saving grace. Protects me from those potentially destructive Mercury and Pluto conjunctions. My emotions and physical self working together in unison. Mars Trine Saturn – Can I get a hell yea! Both malefics working together for constructive outcomes. Mars Sextile Venus – Ahh, helps me breathe. Libra Sun and Cap Moon
Really enjoyed this one. Although I will say I think the passion and enthusiasm that comes with mars was maybe underplayed for the more malefic aspects? I’m an Aries rising with mars in the 7th, my oldest son is Libra rising with mars in the 7th and I’d say we are both really passionate about encouraging those we’re in relationship with, we invest a lot of our energy into our relationships and encouraging those we’re close to. My youngest daughter has mars in the 3rd and has a similar thing with her siblings. She is a cancer rising so it comes more with a concern, she’s very concerned for her siblings and likes to keep them close. 😊❤️ My husband is a Leo rising, he has mars in the 5th conjunct his Neptune and he always has big dreams and ideas and that’s where he puts his energy. 😄 My oldest daughter and my sister both have mars in the 11th and they invest a lot of their energy into friends, both have large friend circles and busy social lives. My youngest son has mars in the 6th and he definitely has a strong focus and energy in put into ‘work’ but work that he enjoys. So I guess I see natal mars as what we put the most of our energy too. Perhaps u already mentioned this though and I missed it. I love that it’s got me thinking about it though. 😊 Always enjoy ur podcasts Chris and have learnt so much from them. Thank u.
Mars Venus conjunction here.. I can say the worst, rudest things in fights and I’m forgiven in a few days. My arguments/debates on forums/real life are seen as attractive. I am also deeply passionate about people whom I love and even my hobbies like cooking, singing, guitar gel both planet qualities really well. I think the genres of music I like too is a mixture of passionate, soft rock, ballady, with metal thrown in. I’m attracted to ppl who are intelligent and passionate even if I don’t agree with their point of view. Sometimes even being on opposite sides in a debate is really attractive to me.
For some reason will the heating nature of the two malefics made me think of the two major ways to die in space; the cold, restrictive nature being the vast majority of space where you would freeze to the point of physical restrictive death being Saturn. The extreme heat, burning up in an atmosphere or star by where you are bombarded with extreme forces but is less likely being Mars.
as a scorpio rising with mars in the 10th, I can say: thanks for this episode and the part where u say Mars does not always means just the military or violent aspecto, but also the preventing of or the “other side of the coin” I find it hard to translate into my life when I hear the typical Martial themes and how they can be associated into the 10th, although I am pretty straightforward and aggresive towards life in general… I could not be less interested in the Army for example. Hope that made sense…
I have a sandwich of mars in 1st Acendent and moon in 12th in leo all conjunct and I am incredibly impatient, I take instant decisions and I have incredible Will to continue even hard and undesirable circumstances. I am always ready to defend myself and my loved ones. It’s like having an instant shot of adrenaline when I get triggered…my mars is also squared by my Uranus in Scorpio. 😳 I personally think I was made to act upon my desires as I have NN and Jupiter conjunct in 2nd house. Mars is helping me to assert myself and wanting to achieve whatever I desire to achieve. My sun is also conjunct Pluto. Thank you ever so much for a wonderful podcast. I am slowly going through all episodes. ♥️🙏🏻
Mars in the 11th. Definitely experienced ostracization in friendship groups and dramatic friendship break ups out of nowhere. This is usually where I stood up for myself or critiqued some kind of institution. Such as one time I critiqued landlordism to a friend, not being aware that a friend was a landlord, then them taking offense and the friendship blew up. My mars is in its fall. So I put two and two together there. One group of people in my social circle I’d considered friends also ostracized me for speaking publicly about their friend who’d mistreated me. That happened around the time Pluto opposed my mars, I think it was a day or two off that being exact. Even though I was waiting for something bad to happen in the context of a group or friends by transit, I was still shocked at what transpired. Also, a friend who pushed boundaries then took offense when I found their apology lacking, because it didn’t cite their boundary pushing, but my offense, so they and the friend who helped write the apology regrouped without me, and dropped off the radar. I have so few friends now because I’ve been burned by this experience over and over. Friendship break ups are a hidden pain tbh. But they are just as important if not more than romantic relationships. I’d say another thing is fighting for your friends – I’ve defended friends (or been ready to) when I’ve seen them come under unfair attack. Several groups I’ve left also because of racism, or something that misaligned with my values where everyone else/most nodded along but I either left, or i spoke up then left after an aggressive response to my, i thought, tactful calls for reflection on something I saw as problematic.
My Mars is at 26 sag 59. I can confirm, I don’t mind saying what’s true but disrupts the system. My Jupiter in the 9th, my Sun, and Saturn/uranus at 0 cap all support it. I feel enormous power but that I must use it carefully. I just found astrology and I can’t wait to make an impact. Thank you so much for this series and for the podcast and the book and the rest! I’m growing so quickly with all this high quality content to gobble up.
Interesting when you guys mentioned milk as being the antidote to hot peppers and the reference to cancer and dairy products. I have a very weak Mars in cancer in the 12th house but I became an ardent activist for animal rights when I learned about the dairy industry and how horribly animals are treated in the animal agriculture industry and the devastating impact on the whole planet. But fighting that fight is very emotionally draining and upsetting, and the ridicule you get from other people is just incredible. It’s a very frustrated and sad Mars.
I have a good Moon conjunct Mars celebrity natal chart example for the files: Bruce Dickinson, the lead singer of Iron Maiden, was born with Moon conjunct Mars in Taurus (ruler of the throat/vocal chords). Iron Maiden is a heavy metal band (Mars) who often performs songs about esoteric or mythological history themes (the Moon). Bruce is also famously a pilot and pro fencer! ✈️⚔️
Mars conjuct Saturn in the 6-7th house (edge) meant always for me abusive relationships where i was always the one who could never raise voice and have a will power. Ever since i started my astrology and psychology journey, i make this exact thing on myself (excercising daily as a soldier, and working like a soldier, humble and step by step), so it doesnt find me anymore from the outside, and i also dont let it anymore to happen.
Aquarius Sun, Aquarius Ascendant, Libra Moon, Aquarius Mercury, Capricorn Venus (squared by my Moon, Uranus AND Pluto annnnnd in conjunction with my Capricorn Jupiter so I basically have an invisible love life in my solitude), Best for last……Mars in Sagittarius. My Saturn in Gemini adds yet more air element. Takes all my effort to stay or maintain grounding. Or even gain grounding at all at times. My Mars is a curiosity to me so I’m very excited about this episode! Thank you so much! 🙏🏼
Adding this Mars/Venus conjunction example: one of the biggest embroidery/cross stitch designers of the 20th century into the 21st was Marilyn Levitt-Imblum, she had a mars, venus conjunction in virgo. The constant use of a needle in and out of fabric for the sake of art and the attention to detail required for said art feels really relevant 🪡
The discussion of fighters with Mars in detriment, and the road rage during Mars transits, reminds me of times I’ve had Mars transiting my Cancer Asc… last time I had to undergo this very painful treatment for my hip that involved stabbing long needles deep into my muscles, however, it was very effective for healing.
My father has mars in Leo in the 9th house (nothign else in that house for him) and it seemed spot on to me ( education/ travel/ all things foreign) he was a career Air Force airman, took advantage of the military opportunity to travel to go back to the country his mother was from, where he then also met my mother, due to his job, and he travelled a lot and we moved often becaues of him being in the military.
Watching this with hindsight… Two years ago and this year, I got in a car accident on days when the sun was conjunct mars. This year in Libra, my 1H, 2 years ago in Leo 11H. The first time my car was totaled, it was over $4k in damages (but insurance covered it, and it was fixable). So I have definitely learned to PAY ATTENTION during these transits and maybe not do any excess driving if I can help it.
I am SO glad that I found this website. I was just transiting my bedroom from the house of Cancer and entering my bathroom which is in Scorpio, and I WAS considering buying some Ginger biscuits, but then I heard your article. Ginger biscuits, being inclined by 90 degrees to Virgo, would, I realised, lead to a bout of serious depression, so I leaned towards Taurus and purchased a packet of Cheese biscuits instead. They tasted, delicious, a very strong Caerphilly cheese with a hint of Mars dust.
Omg I finally see what happened. These last two years have been so hard on me. Filled with fear and restriction of a type of feeling halted, as if I cannot do the things that I need to bravely let myself go into. As if stopped out of absolute terror. So I had a kundalini awakening that has been going strong for the last 3 years (a twelth house perfection year ugh). I have saturn in my 11th house in scorpio and mars in my second in aquarius (where saturn is at right now)… It has dawned on my for the last two years that saturn was taring me apart. Not just that, saturn (as if today) is at the exact degree of my mars. I know they are supposed to be receiving each other through mutual reception, but are in a sign based square as well, also mars is my most malific planet (I’m diurnal).and is square the mc in the eleventh. I know I’ll get over this after saturn is out of aquarius, but I am starting to really dislike how slow saturn is. One thing it has done is push me to work on myself in the last two years (in many ways including spiritual practices, eating better, paying attention to vitamins and minerals, trying to pay attention to what kind of content I watch, or read (watching what I invite into my sphere if influence)… But it feels as if I have been up against a giant wave crashing over my life for two years straight! Like an almost impassable wall that I have been struggling to fix. I just want to know that because they are in mutual reception that maybe I will come out on the other side ok and not go insane from this amount of existential intensity.
My Gemini Mars for me very much interconnects me 9th and 10th houses since it’s in the late 20 degrees (forgot exact). I am a copywriter while i’m completing my masters in propaganda studies, specifically nationalism like 200+ miles from where I was born which in this country is a LONG way away. While for many mars is seen as bad in a way, and while I am Venus dominant in my chart, Mars is very special for me as for how I am directing myself in life.
I’m Capricorn Rising Scorpio Sun Pisces Moon (trine my Sun) Mercury in Libra Venus in Sagittarius (square my Moon and sextile Mercury) Mars in Virgo (in tight – less than 1 degree of separation – conjunction with Pluto) in the 9th House So yes I do find that it seems that I accidentally exorcise people. I know some folks have VERY strong reactions to me without me doing anything more than just breathing. My presence riles them up. It’s very unnerving. But my Progressed Sun is now in Capricorn so I no longer give a crap, lol.
My signs are ♓♑♊♒♑♌ I’m listening to this while trying to put my son to sleep who is restless af. His signs are ♐♒♊♐♐♈ He has sagg. As 3 of his personal planets and an Aquarius moon like you Chris. He really does love his freedom and he is only 9 months. I can already see how brilliant he is. I call him my lucky number 9 baby. I waited all my life to be able to read his chart. 🥰🥰 Namaste 🙏🏼
Hello, there! My big six: ♎️♎️♏️♏️♏️♎️ (Sun, Moon, Rising, Mercury, Venus, Mars) My Libran Sun, Moon, and Mars are all in the 12th house. I have always seen / experienced my mom as this fierce, independent, soldier woman (which she is really: big ♐️ energy, was in the last battalion of the WACs / US veteran) but since I’ve become a mom, I find myself websiteing that energy a lot too. Fiercely protective of my children, and my home. I’ve also found anger/conflict/aggression to be very difficult to manage at times, and have had to find actual constructive ways to work things out, although my go to has been / can be a nasty passive aggressiveness. My younger (half) sister has 0 degrees Mars in Aries, and I always joke it’s why we didn’t grow up together (the fights!) but she’s really taught me a lot about the difference between assertiveness vs aggression. I get irritated and angry with myself a lot, and it can implode in my environment. I need a LOT of alone time to regather/recooperate. It’s funny that while I may mishandle my own defenses/offenses, When it comes to serving or protecting others, my Mars shines (Aries 6th house?). I truly feel I am my own worse energy at times too (12th house?) Just finished listening to the podcast version of this episode (catching up planet wise!) and really enjoyed it. Hopefully my insights add a little more flavor! Chris, if you ever wanna run fro your money (experiences?) with that Scorpio Stellium, let me know! According to Donna Cunninghams’s Pluto score chart, I’ve scored an 80!
Venus retrograde conjunct Mars in Scorpio third house co-present with Uranus and Mercury natal. I won’t even begin to catalog the shock and awe this transit represents in my life— It would make an interesting book and maybe a series 😆 (major drama!!!) Since I have Saturn on my ascendant in Virgo, these stories will probably never see the light of day. I also tend to exert a lot of energy striving to reconcile opposites and building or maintain bridges. I’m pretty good at keeping volatile situations and people at peace (including myself) and there are no shortage of situations in my life that need this type of vigilance. I have worked in difficult situations doing social work and also briefly driving ambulance. Now I manage a health food store, but feel more like a therapist and physician as I am a magnet for people who seek physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. Man, I could go on forever with the literal examples of how it has manifested in both positive and negative ways.
I wasn’t expecting to have one of my own placements mentioned during Machine Gun vs. Snipe Rife–but since it happened, I gotta speak on it! I have Mars in Pisces in the 9th house, as well as being born in 1998–the Chinese zodiac year of the Earth Tiger. My life path number: 3 I like using The Rat Race as a reference when I’m reading any chart that belongs to a person, me included, because of the elemental versions of each animal & how I blatantly, always see it in others and myself. I 100% did not know until a few months ago: “In Chinese mythology and mysticism, tigers are king of the jungle, not the lion…they are fierce protectors of the deceased…even modern Chinese people can be seen placing tiger figurines at the final resting place of a loved one.” Tigers in this mythology are associated with guarding the dead from evil entities/demons because demons are rarely likely to incite anyone near/with a Tiger person let alone the exposed, solitary Tiger person. Just going to leave this here b/c it’s fucking cool. I do kind of wish demons would interact with me more obviously rather than just watch me from the shadows & attempt to out-tiger me…..pussies.
My mars is in cancer and I get colds and flu a lot. It always hits me the first and hardest out of everyone. Funnily enough, I only get it from children (I think having my 5th house in scorpio has something to do with that) if it originates outside my home or from family members (mostly my nephews and my older sister who, funnily enough, is a cancer sun). Never from friends or acquaintances.
This blew my mind for a variety of reasons, but I’ll speak for myself! 🤯 I have Mars in Virgo (night sect) in the 4th. ALL of my current neighbors are loud and it’s infuriating. After my 4H profection prepping for this, I am moving out of my parents house for the first time to Denver. I don’t have the best relationship with my family and have always wanted to move long distance. Everyone on my mom’s side of the family has emigrated long distance from their place of origin as well.
mars is dominate in my chart. I have 0’23 Aires rising, with Mars 16 ’44 Aires, Sednia 27’0 conjunct my south node 27’44, Eris 9’44.. my favorite description was written by the late Isabelle🙃 Hickey is a person with a strong mars can go where angles fear to tread. when mars transited over my uranus, i was walking home from school and someone came up behind shot me.( the only thing I ever predicted) on 1/1/2000 my friend was murdered in front of me, not usual things that happen to the average person. for me Mars is NOW OR NOT NOW. Courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyway. when I was young I believed performed the best in emergency situation. hope that helps to add to your definition to mars which is also in a grand trine with saturn and uranus. and squares my Sun and moon.
♍♊♐♌♍♎ I’m Sagittarius rising in a day chart with Jupiter conjunct Mars conjunct Mc in the 11th in Libra. With my ruler of the first touching Mars, when emotionally upset I have a tendency towards clumsiness that manifests as physical injury. I have a scar above the eye from a gymnastics accident as well as a LARGE scar on my hand from a blade mishap in the kitchen. It’s been difficult to overcome as I am an artisan and work with my hands. Mercury is combust my Sun in Virgo, and my Gemini Moon trines both Libra and Saturn in Aquarius lol. To soothe my Mars I currently try to maintain a qigong practice, which combines physical movement with spirituality.. I’ve venus in Leo in the 9th. Yoga was real beneficial to me but I stopped after a sprained ankle. So yea this episode was spot on!! And the timing most opportune. With my most recent birthday, Mars is now my time lord. Maybe I should be taking mitigation more seriously? Fun fact! I realized after this episode that with my ruler of the forth conjunct mars, both of my parents work in martial settings. My mom’s a nurse who preps all the instruments for surgery and dad a metal fabricator.
I have a taurus mars 2h in retrograde and I don’t collect swords although I’d love to collect knives! interestingly my house has just a metric shitload of scissors. like way too many. 7 pairs at last count which is almost twice as many as how many people live in my house. as for collecting I collect pumpkin sculptures lmao which I suppose isn’t as cool as swords
We tend to think of sun signs as evenly distributed, but more people are born in some months rather than others. Likewise, more babies are born at certain times of day. How would that affect the general disposition of a. population? Are these concentrations of birth times the same in the northern and southern hemispheres?
Something interesting is what paul sedir wrote about the correspondences of plant life that is under the rule of mars. So thorny plants, some poisonous plants and plants that cause inflammation, heat in the body, usually plants with red like: poison oak and poison ivy, poison sumac ect. Spikey plants and stimulants…. They all have similar signatures that show some type of abrasiveness in it’s looks that speaks to the nature of what is inherent in the plant. Take kratom gor instance: kratom is a stimulant, has red veins as it ages and spikey seed pods! It also has variation of red on the stems depending on the strain. Plants that act on the blood as well as crystals and stones that work on the blood. Hematite is one of these and there have been tests on hematite and it’s actions on blood, stanching wounds ect. Wanna try something cool, if you get a (real hematite: the original bloodstone), and get a cut, dip it in cold waterfor a few seconds and hold it on the wound and it will coagulate the blood and stop the bleeding.
As someone with Mars in sag in the 5th I’ve always been good at sports but I especially enjoy kickboxing which I thought was an interesting correlation to sag representing the legs on the body. I also cackled at the comment made about the mma fighter who didn’t really care about winning, but just wanted to chill at home and smoke weed because it’s so relatable with my Mars conjunct Venus.
My daughter has Mars in Virgo in the 3rd House. She is like a fire torch slash AK-47 when she talks! I describe it as agressive BB pellets of detailed words being shot at you! 😂 Ouch! Not to mention her driving style! Omg! Takes off like a rocket and comes to a stop at the last second. Switching lanes is like pointing a missile & shooting… no pause before switching lanes! She is a great kid but is learning to tame her abrasive critical Mars! Thank goodness for her Mercury-Sun in Libra! 😜😍
My friend has Mercury conjunct Mars in Scorpio and in her younger days she competed nationally in handball in France! Not sure you call that sport the same in English but in French it is literally “handball” which is funny! Mercury rules hands, Mars energy/Sport… Other significations for this combination I would say would be speaking loudly or aggressively as a usual way of speaking. Being self-righteous, perhaps self-centred/egotistical, proud of intellectual achievements…
I have my natal leo mars in 11th house applying to a less than a degree off square w my retrograde scorpio venus. My moon is separating from my mars from less than a degree away. @ my recent mars return I had so much anxiety @ a social gathering that I ran away & had a terrible bike accident. Still wouldn’t trade this mars placement for the world!!! It keeps life interesting!!!!
♐️sun ♏️moon♏️Mercury ♏️Venus conjunct by one minute, separating from ♏️Mars square AC ♑️Jupiter ♊️Saturn. Saturn will conjunct AC final time Jan 18, 2022 (after square to Mars/Venus Jan 6)…learning how to love again…again! 🤣. Drawn out saturn/Uranus breakup which at one point “required” the use of sheathed swords in my bedroom…as Mars gears up to conjunct my moon dec 13, I’m determined to website the energy positively…perhaps new avenues of astrological research! Using yin yoga and am planning to do 108 sun salutations/day for the 40 days of Venus retro in my 12th…focused, strenuous physical activity with a spiritual bent…my Mars/Venus sextile Jupiter in my 12th. 🔥🔥🔥 (Ceres is also conjunct Mars Venus by minutes…I have three children…it’s a very interesting life, lol.)
I can attest that mars conjunct mercury makes you prone to swearing. I have it in the 10th H and it honestly happens in almost every other sentence, I don’t do it at work, but a switch flips outside of work and it’s the fastest way to get my point across most of the time. I don’t understand why some people find it so offensive when done casually. Swearing in a sentence is similar to adding hot peppers to your food, not necessary but intensifies it, keeps it from being bland.
I have Mars in Cancer conj the MC in the 10H in a day chart. I find that the angular Mars ambition and energy is very present, but I have to be sure my feelings are tended to and I’ve taken care of my physical self, or else I fly straight to comfort. Also emotional combative rings true. It means its difficult for me to be assertive because usually by the time I feel comfortable enough to act on the need for assertion, I’m already upset and angry crying lmao! Mostly, unfortunately, working in the service industry means that it usually manifests as emotional and combative customers. When Covid hit, I somehow acquired a “nemesis” customer that would specifically seek me out when I was working alone to argue, mostly about why he shouldn’t have to mask up. I fell for it once or twice, but eventually got my manager’s permission to not serve him and he stopped coming back. I always think of Mars in Cancer as those moments in movies/tv where the hero is fighting the bad guy, but the bad guy tries to emotionally manipulate the hero to throw them off, usually by showing the hero their lover is in danger or something like that. The distraction of emotions makes it hard to get things done. Oh also I’m ♍︎♎︎♎︎♎︎♎︎♋︎
I have mars in the 4th sextile jupiter in the 5th (jupiter =asc and midheaven ruler). I finally found success and fulfillment in working for myself in real estate. I definitely had a mars parent and my childhood SUCKED. and I moved away from my hometown as soon as I possibly could. now I live on my mars line (astro cartography) 😩
Thanks Chris Im really enjoying this series! Two things. My sister is 3 days older than Sylvi so it was entertaining in that context looking into my sister’s chart again. Secondly Mars in my 6th I always felt manifests as confrontations in the work place. For me it has been both co workers or my bosses throughout. I have carry over from the 7th because My Sun is in the 7th and Mars’ ruler is the Sun. The topic of open enemies in the 7th, I thought was a medieval horary concept. In the Hellenistic period open enemies(confrontations) is a 6th house topic. I tend to think and trust the latter. I’m a night chart so I’ve been able to diffuse a lot (even hold my anger back). I agree that in the context of the workplace Ive always kept myself a busy body (and can overwork myself). Thanks for reading!
this was very insightful. aries sun (with mars, in 4th house) – scorpio moon and midheaven – capricorn ascendant, nighttime chart. so it seems like my mars is being used pretty well overall. mars is transiting my 9th house right now and i had a minor eye injury yesterday while trying to hammer something with tacks during a storm in the dark, lol. the comments you made during the 4th house discussion relating to wanting to keep arguments and etc private really resonated with me. i definitely find myself speaking in hushed tones and trying to “act natural” when i’m out in public having a heated situation with someone.
♈️ sun, moon, mercury in the 3rd house ♉️ mars in the 4th house ♑️ ascendant This episode hit so many nails for me! I was a literal fireball of a child. I started all the fights in the house with my siblings (talked back a lot to my parents as well), as i had a short fuse, did not like being told no and my patience was 0/10. I was the first feminine child and also the first of my generation (my older ones were all 90s kids and i was the first 2000s) so i was the “princess” who grew up with technology (half of the photo albums are of me since cameras and phone cameras were accesible) and I was also the first to do well in school at a young age so I was a major overachiever and would bring home a bunch of reading trophies (they used to have word count competitions in my elementary and i’d win first in my grade each year). I had also taken up roles like safety patrol (5th grade), vice president (4th grade) and president (5th grade) in baby ASB 🤣. My drive slowed down as I aged but I was still a huge scholar up until my junior/senior year where I stopped caring and became a stoner for the time lol. I used to get in trouble very often for being over talkative in class and even now have a problem with talking too much and talking faster than my mind can keep up, causing me to stumble over my words frequently. Oh and I have the mouth of a sailor lol. On the topic of sailors, my dad was in the navy and was extremely martial like and because of that I’d always rebel and was the first to get tattoos out of my sibling (15 years) and body piercings (also 15).
3rd revisit, figured I would go again with the ruler of spirit angle. (Mars isn’t my favorite planet..) Accidentally found good songs. Tweaker – ruby, Tweaker – Happy Child.. popular, Bonnie Prince Billy – I see a darkness. (Johnny Cash covered the latter). Vocalist, lyricist: moon, mars, Venus, Jupiter in scorpio. Definitely sweats sexiness.. (Venus, mars conj.. joke) that moon is about as obvious as it gets. Not exactly sexy, but amazing songwriter. One way mars in detriment (libra) conjunct Venus and Pluto trine moon, sextile Neptune, etc etc etc can show up in my natal is agreeableness that can actually entrap others by them exposing either a conscious or unconscious motivation. I’ve actually wondered if in a setting like a podcast if that would still happen. I’ve heard episodes of this podcast where a person can get comfortable unintentional going into an underlining thought process that is motivating them which they may not be entirely aware of. That is how Venus (psychologically) can service mars. Sometimes, rarely or by accident, it can show up like the viral “change my mind” memes. Generalized statement where it’s hard to figure out what it even means. A recent one: JK Rowling is right. What I actually means (which I knew) is that he comments about strategy and some feeling alienated from themselves with their own support groups being shut down is a poor strategy that will backfire which is only related to mars expressions of cutting/separating. How some feel is similar to how some feel when they vote to only find who they voted for are more concerned with lobbyists and special interests feeling left out.
i have Mars in the first house, i have a small scare on my face. the bigger of Mars action was a little lower 1980 when Mars and uranus ♅, on the streets of Oakland california I had someone come up behind me and shoot me. the bullet went through my shoulder and skimmed the back of my neck. studying i noticed the transit, but couldn’t pin down what would happen, A week later a friend I studied with called and asked what happened, I do not remember the exact date.
So interesting. I am particularly aware of Mars energy in my life. I have Mars in Cancer, its depression, and I definitely relate to the supposed way it could play out in a native’s life. But what I find interesting is Sylvi’s example of the reaction we have when we touch a hot stove. I grew up in a little cabin that was heated by a stove, and inevitably had to contend as a baby with the reality of that hot stove…and HOT was my first spoken word. And also I went on to experience two major burn accidents. One at 2yrs, falling in a campfire, and the other on a motorcycle at the age of 9. I wonder what transits were happening at those times in my life. And I wonder if burn accidents represent Mars energy. And why it is a theme in my life despite the depressed Mars.? Anyone?
Mars has a face tatt..!!! That is SO funny. I have Mars on the ascendant in Scorpio. I had a motor bike accident more than 10 years ago and it left a scar over my right eye. I planned for a number of years to get a face tatt for that spot. I ended up choosing the angelic symbol for healing. I love it! (OBTW I am 70 years old next year, so no impulsive thing here, it is only my second tattoo the first being of a spider –another symbol related to Scorpio which I got on my 65th birthday) I would surely watch a article “So you want to get a tattoo?” LOL I am also a bit surprised how Mars features so much in my chart because I am Libra with a stellium of 5, plus Taurus in my 7th house has Jupiter
I have ♍♑♌♍♋♈ and my mars squaring both my Venus and Neptune. Fun fact is i also have Jupiter in ♊ soo lots of mercury placements.. but i would love to know if i should consider both Gemini more as its in my 11th house and thus concider more of Gemini qualities than only “ms talkalot”.. and Aries too seeing as mars is there in my 10th house how that impacts me and my personality more than that?🙏 Love the podcast! I learn so much from you!🙏🫶
Enjoyed the interpretation of Mars in Gemini in 1st. Add conjunct to Ascendant. And you got me, unafraid to speak my mind, and quite cutting in remarks. Note also, the need to leave comments. I have also started to check Mars transits whenever I get injuries to my hands. Literally cuts by knives, paper and burns, and bleeding a lot. Recently, it was even a cut by a red handled knife on a red tomato, which I bled all over.
RastafarI love. I am learning soo much from your podcasts! I loved the one about ancient Philosophy and Astrology. My Sun is Gemini with Mercury in Gemini. I have Scorpio Ascendant with Neptune in Scorpio. I have Moon in Cancer, Venus and Saturn in Taurus. And,, I have Mars in Sagitarius in the 2nd house! My Stellium is in Virgo in the 11th house. I have Uranus, Pluto and Jupiter in Virgo! I really enjoyed everything that you’ve said about Mars. I wish I could get my chart to know when the planets are transitting aspects in my natal chart. I was born on Sunday at 4:15PM, June 15, 1969 in Brooklyn, New York. ( By the way, please tell us where your guest is taking her Astrology courses) Blessed love.#1804 #Ayiti #Housesforthehomeless
I finished perusal, this was really good, it gave my a few insights on my 1H Mars in Leo in a day chart: I get a sore throat occasionally, which goes away very fast (I’m wondering the fact it’s is squaring my Taurus Sun has anything to do with it, since Taurus is associated with the throat), I have minor scars on my face, from chickenpox lol, and I suffer from anxiety, which I never thought to attribute to Mars!
Wow, such a thoughtful, insightful pod cast on mars., much learned. My mars is less than 1 degree above asc in 12th house in cap with kyron in cap there, too, sag ruling 12th. I’ve worked in a prison and a state mental hospital, and know all too well, the plight of the underdog. Loved being able to help there, while I also worked on healing self. I have aires on 3rd house, and don’t know if it’s significant, but had a violent, psycho sister that totally f’d my head, like the first 12 years of my life. My mother had an aspect, where she condoned her behavior and humiliated me! Of course, past life karma! I had to go to spirituality for sanity, and hard headed cap rising helped to survive. Glad now to be where I am. It’s interesting that sister almost died at birth. Mabey someday ill study her chart. I had an NDE, but no life review. I think I chose it as part of the undoing, unraveling . I even tried to help her, but she’s too crazy, still causing havoc in peoples lives, so I let go. Thank you for this patient study of mars and its aspects. I am living, mostly as a recluse, for now. Take care and God/ Goddess bless!
I have Mars in Taurus with Venus copresent in 12th and I literally just said very loudly last night “I just want everyone to get along and be safe and be healthy dammit!” I own a craft kit business and I require a lot of alone time even though I have a lot of associates and social interactions .. Aries 11th with Mercury there. I’m pretty obsessed with researching and healing myself with natural remedies.. scorpio 6th.
Sun scorpio, leo ascendant, mars in the 1st, short temper to say the least 😅 I’m pretty much a man stuck in a woman’s body 🤷♀️ mars square mercury and uranus, typically have bandaids on one or more fingers.. (I do not have red hair, small scar on my face barely visible but many scars on ny body many of which from burns)
Hey i have Mars with Sun Moon and thank god Venus being badly aspected by Saturn and Uranus and i almost died 3 times and i am relatively young for that i think (still post my 1st saturn return) my question is Does websiteing Mars energy into something constructive like working out every day or a special project or something REALLY STOPS the bad manifestation of the planet? Because i am really tired of this…i have been trying all my life and still have those awfull 3 experiences and don’t even wanna think about the future…..I have jupiter in aries close to the north node but it is rx….does that help in any way as a benefic?
Yo chris I don’t want to offend you in this, but you should had brought another astrologer into this conversation. In comparison to the previous planets episodes, there was a lot missing on this, beginning with your co-hosts knowledge of the planet. I don’t think she was the best choice for this… also she has like no motivation I can’t even sense the mars in her.
@theastrologypodcast I’m a redhead and I have mars in the first house by whole sign. I can send you my natal chart if that helps? Just let me know your email and I’ll send it to you. It might be significantly placed because my family are mixed heritage and I’m a bit of a weird one in the context of my family of origin? Anyway, let me know if I can help with this astrological hypothesis and I’m happy to send you my natal data privately. Thanks, Chris!
Natal Mars in Virgo – first house. all of the skin eruptions, inflammation, infection, etc are so real for me. plus the last Mars/Sun synodic cycle started right on my Virgo Ascendant so the Mars lessons were activated even more and that’s when my eczema started to get really bad and I began my healing journey with a TCM dermatologist. also I have a Leo stellium in the Mars decan :hot: :overheating: and I’m living right by my Mars astrocartography line it’s been great and horrible and really rewarding LOL
Excited for this as Mars is my malefic out of sect in my 1H lol, but having the time of his life being trine by Venus and Jupiter, with nothing on his way! I don’t know if I’ll find these answers in this podcast but this placement always wonders me, since I’m not much of a martial person at all, but maybe it’s a lesson for me to learn? Anyways, my big six are: ♉️♋️♌️♊️♈️♌️
Technically there are NO GOOD or BAD Signs on the zodiac because everybody is affected by all signs because, Each Sign has a House & a Home on the Circle of each Life Time. Choice is the Purpose of the WORLD that we call a Universe – that relates to the word University or Education. The Circle ⭕️ represents the Key to everything because it Never Ends. The Clock represents the Circle as Time Never ends and the Zodiac represents the Clock with dimensions overlapping each other, like the Number 8 — which represents the PAST & the Future While the PRESENT is Now. It doesn’t take a brain to recognize, that WE are Who WE Chose to be — as a Choice to be LED or to follow a Leader. The key is the point at a Mirror to who is in charge. Because the DeviL has always LiveD as a DoG spelt backwards — as Karma represents the ⭕️. It doesn’t take a brain to realize, that everything starts at ⭕️ The Brain represents Creativity & Learning.
I’m really sorry to say this, but this girl was way too inexperienced to be on this show. Compared to other articles of your amazing website, this was a total disaster. The only thing I heard coming out of this girl was “yeah” and “uhmm”. There was absolutely zero contribution. I hope you will consider making another one with Mars ❤️

I’m a Mars in Scorpio and I am currently living a minimalist lifestyle,I have had a need for this for as long as I was able to remember, also I do get noticed for things that seem so small but to others it’s so blown up !! I do get annoyed quite a bit, I currently have annoying neighbors,I’m very sensitive to sounds, I do crave and enjoy my alone time, Wow spot on!!!
Oh my god. I’m a mars in cancer and your “having valuable land in the family that can’t be sold due to nostalgia” thing is scarily accurate to me. The land also happens to be owned on my mothers side lmao. I guess the shock comes from me being new to astrology; I’m just now starting to study it lol.
Mars in libra and you got it right. When I do actually speak my mind and say what I want how I want, instead of just mentally leaving ppl where they are, it yields such great results for me. It just gives me so much anxiety that I hate doing it. And it’s never about the person that makes me nervous, it’s always internal.
Mars in cancer here, so spot on, despite that, I have my Moon in pisces and Chiron in cancer and house 10. Thanks for your loving messages!! Yep, family wounds have being so far my biggest lesson, after years being on the spiritual journey. Not easy but at least I’m aware of it and continously doing my work. Give a big hug to others whose mars is in cancer i understand you 😂 😂 😂
I have mars in Cancer LoL and yes you are right😂 I inherited my home and paid off over 45,000$ in back taxes and it has been a bitch lol but I do own my home outright💕 I have overcome that thank God, and yes I have passive income and hated my mother as a child; i love her so much now; I’m biracial so yes definite identity crisis as a child also lol!! But my relationship with my children is amazing. Loyalty is a must in life for me; I feel like the karmic debt is paid cause life now is fabulous AF 💕♥️🥰 you were spot in Sky👌🏽💕😘❤️
I have Mars in Aquarius and my ideas don’t trail off as much as they metamorphose. One topic of conversation will easily transition to 10 others before I have to go back and make the original point. 😅 Thank you for this wonderful description! Too much of the time, analyses of Mars in Aquarius come from those who are prone to anger and get annoyed at us for not straight-up taking abuse and instead detaching emotionally. I love the description about the capability to change lives for the greater good.
Thank you for just explaining exactly how this feels. Mars in Scorpio in third house here and everything you said resonates utterly. Quite right about the money and the bed and the bugs. I have a private space that is just for me and I feel my heat rising if outside noise intrudes (neighbours, car noise, anything unwelcome). I need to spend so much time alone, quietly, unseen, unknown about here in order to regenerate so I can face the world again positively. You have such a gift, thank you and peace to you.
Mars in cancer here and that was a very good description. Finally also some positive aspects. You give me hope regarding passive income and I used to live as an expat for many years but I moved back home and now I feel stuck here. I would love to travel again but something seems to keep me here. Nostalgia and Stockholm syndrome is again a big one for me, I keep finding myself glamourising the past even though I know it wasn’t that amazing in reality. It’s so difficult to figure out who I am and what I really want on the soul level, but there is a strong urge to do that or else life feels meaningless.
I’m one of those lucky Mars in Cancer people…in the 7th house, no less😬. You’re accurate there, it feels like all the people I would love to be close to never have time for me or seek me out and those that I don’t care to spend much time with are attached to me or we’re connected in some other way. I’m finally (hopefully) fully healing all the deep resentments that come with this placement (to muddle things up a bit more… I’ve got Venus in Virgo…in my 8th house). Oh my! If I weren’t blessed with a Leo sun trining a Jupiter in Saggitarius, I probably wouldn’t have made it this far. Thank you for this article, Sky! I love these – feel free to make more. 😜🥰
I’m a Mars in Scorpio (Mars in the 8th) person with Mars Conjunct Pluto (in Scorpio) at 6° 🙋🏼♀️ I don’t know how I am only just now finding your website but I’m so glad I did. Your story of the dollar bill reminded me of a personal experience I had a few years ago. I met with a tarot reader and numerologist who talked about the significance of the number 5 and 8 in my life. She also spoke in depth about how giving to others would always come back to me. At the end of our reading I paid and had a $5 bill left which eerily enough had a number 8 written on it. I gave it to her and she still has it to this day. Even cooler, after I left I went to the thrift store and ended up buying a pair of jeans. When I got home I went to wash them and reached in the pocket and pulled out a $5 bill — it came back. ✨
I love your analysis of Piscean energy SO much. You dont make us debilitated individuals, rather focus on the complexity the 12th house brings, and the natural struggles that humans can face with this. Thank you for that! Pisces: Sun, Moon, Jupiter & Mars! I call it the God complex, not that we believe we are God, but understand the ability for all to connect to that God complex in them because of our constant connection to source. I can personally say I am governed by it, and often find myself thanking God to be alive, and in this realm on this planet, but still not feeling in the world. There is a vibration that comes with being of the Earth as oppsed to in the earth. The attachment to worldy things are not there for me. I dont aspire to own things in this life rather enjoy the experience of the world and help as many as I can realize it is SO much more then just this life, and realm. Death itself is not scary, the way you go of course can be. But I pray all will tap into that God source in them, and enjoy their human experiences while they are here! Asé 💜🔮🌊🙏🏾
LOVED THIS article! Thank you for this! I’m a Mars in Scorpio in conjunction with Pluto and Mercury, both also in Scorpio. Now learning that it’s a Scorpio Stellium and my moon is in the 8th house. You were so on point about the Scorpionic energy and also the healing abilities with this placement. I’ve had to be very careful with how I’m involving myself in other’s lives and it’s so true that just the smallest gestures or things I do somehow create huge impacts or reactions from others. I could never understand why. This really helped me to understand that part of myself. So, thank you!
Mars in Virgo, wow… That looked like it was going to resonate at the start, but then kinda derailed for me… Might be my other placements but for me, it’s an instinct and natural way of applying practical things to make us healthy, in body, mind and spirit. Things just make sense, click and we can quickly and easily place a plan in action and back it up with a smile. Maybe some disconnect between body and mind, as being well is taken for granted. We are quite healthy and stable. But any disruption is a huge nuisance until we get knowledge and devise ASAP a plan to mitigate, cure, get rid of what is not in balance. As a fire planet in a earth mutuable sign, it just makes sense. Practical action that focuses on well being but is flexible in terms of time and content. There is an attunement to what we feel is right for us. We understand very early on that doctors are doing the best they can but not always know what is right for our specific case. We get second opinions or don’t really follow recipes 😉 All we gather, all this experience and knowledge, we find ourselves sharing at dinner parties. Lol. “Oh.. you are having a hard time shaking that sore throat? Have you tried desinfecting your toothbrush brush every morning before the first use?” We are the ones that as kids ate dirt 🙂 or ate salt on its own and later on found out we had very low blood pressure. We are the ones that are ok with applying the most extreme rules during lockdown and are not worrying about walking around with a mask.
Aries is the masculine manifestation, while Scorpio is the feminine manifestation of Mars. I’m a Mars and Pluto in Scorpio and your description of our experiences is spot on! It’s so weird that when I go into solitude, people come looking for me 😂 I absolutely love creating pleasant living conditions for myself and my bed is very important to me. I believe that I have become my own best psychologist and it has transformed my life immeasurably ❤
My goodness. My chart ruler is Mars in Virgo and you literally just described my life. You were spot on about every single one of my health problems. What you said about needing to be self reliant and starting from scratch was me all over. This felt like a personal reading! Can I just say to all my Mars in Virgo’s out there, especially if Mars rules your chart, it’s really important not to obsess over the little things. It will spike your anxiety and your body cannot handle it. Remove yourself from any situation that makes you feel uncomfortable, have a good routine, look after your health diligently, and don’t internalise your problems. Speak about them to friends and family or if you feel you can’t do that, go see someone like the article said. Virgos nature for needing perfection to attain satisfaction of self is in overdrive with the power of Mars, and all that internal turmoil will most certainly give you stress and health problems. Try to focus on methods of relaxation. Thank you so much for this article!
I’m sorry for using profanity if it’s frowned upon here or anything, but holy shit, thank you. I’m the ‘Newmaker’ person from before. I don’t know if you noticed, or if anyone noticed, or if anyone cares… but I deleted my account – that account. I don’t know why. I noticed some people were paying a little too close attention to me and I felt like my privacy was being invaded. So I deleted it… restart. Somewhere else. As someone else. I try to avoid relationships because they always feel like they end in tragedy somehow. Anyway. But this was really good! Thank you for sharing, Sky, you did great. I hope you and everyone else are doing great. See you. 🔥♐
Thanks ❣ Mars in Pisces. When I had my chart read (some 45 years ago), my understanding was that this was a terrible placement. I would be constantly fighting myself, and find it difficult to move forward. After having listened to your explanation, it feels as if I’ve been released. So much of what you said resonates. Thanks, again.
