Georgia Southern University’s official Eagle mascot, GUS, is known for his sideline antics at sporting events and special appearances throughout the year. In January 2024, the university celebrated the 20th birthday of Freedom, the bald eagle mascot of the university. The Bald Eagle, found only in North America, became the official national symbol of the United States of America in 1782. In 1960, “Eagles” became the new mascot for Georgia Southern, and the majestic, soaring raptor depicts the spirit and pride of the university.
The center of Georgia Southern University is home to 85 other birds, 67 reptiles, 70 amphibians, and eight mammals. Freedom, a male Southern Bald Eagle, was found knocked out of the stadium in January 2024. The university is proud to celebrate Freedom’s 20th birthday and honor the mascot’s memory.
The Georgia Southern Eagles Football Basketball Gus Figure, featuring the Eagles logo on a hat, is a very nice poly resin figure with great detail. The mascot is a symbol of pride and spirit for the university, and the eagle mascot is a symbol of the university’s commitment to its students and alumni.
