After World War II, the demand for technicians in Georgia increased due to a shift from being primarily agricultural to an industrial state. In 1980, the yellow jacket mascot, Buzz Bee, was adopted as an official mascot by Georgia Tech. Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU), a public, co-educational state university in Marietta, Georgia, was established in 1947. The university’s mascot was Sting, a green and black anthropomorphic hornet bearing the university’s logo on its chest.
SPSU competed in four intercollegiate varsity sports: men’s baseball, basketball, and soccer, while women’s basketball included. The university’s sports teams were nicknamed the Hornets and Lady Hornets, and their mascot was known as Horny the Hornet. The university participated in various men’s and women’s sports.
In 2010, the university introduced a new Hornet mascot, named Hornet, which featured the words “SPSU Athletic Association” and the word “HORNETS”. The sports teams of SPSU are nicknamed the Hornets and Lady Hornets, and their mascot is known as Horny the Hornet.
Kennesaw State University (KSU) is a public research university in Georgia with two campuses in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU), a 230-acre campus, was located in Marietta, about twenty miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.
