I met Coach Leach one time at a coaching clinic on the Air Raid. Off camera, he was 100% the same as he was in this article. He was what I call a subtle genius, because he disguised his true intelligence in a way as to not come across sounding brash or narcissistic. My wife and I were engaged for six months with no set date about when the nuptials would be made. One day just before lunch, I was told that the new insurance plan at work in the county government where I worked included 100% coverage of spouses, but nothing with fiancees. I called my soul mate and said, “Do you wanna get married and then go have lunch?” We got married at the courthouse where I worked with two witnesses and went to Whole Foods for our wedding lunch. None of our family believed us for a long time. Our next argument will be our first, and we’ve been married almost 30 years.

The wedding vs eloping will define the “why” are we getting married. Weddings are very ego based and are full of false eminence and grandeur. My parents got married and my mom’s backyard and her friends made all the food and apparently it was a success because they have been together forever. Anyway, I’m all down for a good party but some people go pretty crazy and even worse they get real mad when you don’t go to their wedding as if I randomly want to spend $7,000 to go to Hawaii to see my friend I haven’t seen since College mary some girl I don’t even know. Unless the money is coming from somewhere else, this is exactly the right thing to do. Cultural norms are way overrated, don’t fall for the idea of a “storybook wedding”. What a load of shit, I felt none of the storybook when I was forking up the bill for my wedding, to the point that there’s a bit of resentment still towards my wife for her insistence on a very specific type of wedding. That money would’ve gone a very long way in hindsight.

Biggest problem is (Especially the cookie cutter weddings) that it’s all semantics and a show for everyone else except the bride and groom.
