What Is The Meaning Of Foil In Magic The Gathering?

Foil cards, the premium cards in Magic: The Gathering, have a shiny finish and rainbow effect. They are available in various types, such as pre-modern, traditional, and etched foil. Etched foil uses metallic paint or varnish to highlight specific parts of the card artwork with a sparkling effect. Foil treatments in Magic include traditional, galaxy, etched, gilded, and textured foil.

The Halo Foil is a new foil treatment that gives a halo-like effect to some cards in March of the Machine and Secret Lair: March of the Machines. Urza’s Legacy was the first set to feature foil cards available in booster packs, while the previous set (Urza’s Saga) had a foil prerelease promo card. Foil cards, officially styled as “premium” cards, are Magic cards with a shiny foil treatment on the art, text, frames, or entire card.

Foil layer on a card signifies a more rare version and looks nice. Foil-etched cards appear slightly matte and less shiny on the foiled portions, with a slightly textured finish compared to regular foils. Surge Foils feature an almost ripple-style foiling effect, making them eye-catching from the get-go.

Foils were the original premium cards in Magic, introduced in 1999 in Urza’s Legacy and Seventh Edition, and quickly became very desirable.

  • In East Asia, people even make different between traditional foil. There are Japanese print foil and American print foil. Sometimes has Belgium print foil. Especially for war of Sparks alternate Japanese foil planeswalker cards, there are partial gloss foil, all-face gloss foil and promo foil. I really don’t understand why they make these different, and they even make these in different price.

  • from the perspective who played a lot during 7th. It was also the 1st time that we were able to get a black border on some of the classic cards because the foil was the first time it would change the border from white to black. that on top of it being so scare was very special to me at the time. Now looking back I covet these items even more

  • I bought a few 7th Edition foils yesterday, after buying some Urza’s and hearing that 7th Edition are even more beautiful and well done, I had to get in on it! I bought like 3 for some SUPER good deals, excited to add them to my collection! I bought that Kjeldoran Knight for $18! Its a steal man the cheapest one listed now is like $48!

  • Very good explanatory article Mattcaster. What I want to ask is this: what does it actually mean when you see the price of a foil going down in one day, (like in MTG stocks market price)? Is it that a few people needed to sell and they put lower prices on these cards, some people got them and this creates the lower price? Or that a card is not so much trendy and desirable anymore?

  • I think I’m having a Mandela effect when it comes to birds of paradise. I swear they were in a block set at the same time they were in the core sets when 7th edition released. I remember them being at an all-time low because you could get them from at least three different sets 6th, 7th and the main set from whichever block that was.

  • Should I sell my “extra” enemy fetch lands with modern horizons 2 …. on the horizon? What type of products will there be for mo-ho 2. I preordered a collector booster box for 345$ from my LGS; thought was a decent entry point for 1 box probably with a promo? Seems like wotc is pushing preorder by making it way cheaper.. commander legends CB’s, timespiral remastered (preorder was 175$)… maybe a quick information article on mo-ho 2 with a couple specs and how price entry on sealed product is so important. Just some ideas for a quick possibly popular article. Keep the website growing

  • 7th Edition foils were also a gift from some MTGO Events. Winners recieved the 7th Edition full foil box. It is nice to have. I have a couple signed 7th foils like Goblin Matron and an Ensnaring bridge. To be very honest I know they are rare. But these prices are insane, and only so expensive because of demand of some pimp EDH players.
