What Makes Scientists Dismiss Astrology?

Astrology, despite its long history of scientific progress, has not lost its appeal. Its claims have been refuted repeatedly, but many find the practice useful during times of anxiety. A detailed assessment of 152 astrologers found their predictions were no better than random guessing and rarely agreed with. Scientific studies involving astrology have stopped after attempting and failing to establish the validity of astrological ideas. There are no documented cases of astrology, and there are numerous reasons why astrology is disregarded as factual in the modern world.

The main reason is that there is no proven scientific evidence that astrology has any explanatory power for describing the universe. A study from Science Communication revealed that the mere “ology” suffix led participants to rate astrology as more scientific, indicating potential semantic confusion. Astrology largely exploits people’s tendencies to buy into generic descriptions of themselves.

A recent survey from the National Science Foundation found that fewer Americans rejected astrology. The science is unanimously and unambigiously clear: astrology is no longer considered scientific due to its lack of progress and refusal to deal with a large body of critical scientific studies. About a third of Americans believe astrology is “very” or “sort of scientific”.

Falsifiability in astrology is only a matter of replaceability by another theory, and since astrology is in principle replaceable by another theory, falsifiability is only a matter of replaceability by another theory. Astrology has been scientifically tested many times despite the slipperiness of adherents’ claims, and it seldom performs well. The theories of astrology claim that the positions of the planets and the stars influence who you are and what happens to you, such as your job, your career, and your life.

Why are horoscopes a sin in Islam?

Reading horoscopes and believing in them is considered a form of shirk, a form of seeking knowledge of the unseen, which is only known by Allah. It is akin to idol worship and is strictly forbidden in Islam. Shirk is considered the biggest haram of all, as Allah forgives only those to whom He wills, not partners set up with Him in worship. Therefore, shirk is a sin that Allah does not forgive.

Will Allah forgive for believing in zodiac signs?

Shirk is a sin that Allah does not forgive, and it is worse than any other sin, including eating pork or drinking alcohol. Reading horoscopes is not just a harmless fun, but a form of shirk that can have serious consequences in the afterlife. It is akin to idol worship and is strictly forbidden in Islam. Reading horoscopes is not just a fun activity, but a form of shirk that seeks knowledge of the unseen, which is only known by Allah.

It is akin to idol worship and is not something to be taken lightly. Therefore, reading horoscopes and believing in them is not a harmless pastime but a serious sin that can have serious consequences in the afterlife.

What does the Bible say about astrology?

In Matthew 28:18, Jesus asserts that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to him. This contradicts biblical wisdom, as chasing after false gods is a sin. There is no biblical evidence that God has given authority to stars or astrologists. Pursuing predictions about our destiny or personality is biblically sinful, as it takes power from God and gives it to something other than God. A horoscope cannot change what God has already ordained before we were even created.

What does Allah say about astrology?

The prohibition of zodiac signs in Islam is based on hadiths and transmissions from Ibn ‘Abbas and al-Bazzar. Abu Dawud narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that anyone learning astrology has learned a branch of witchcraft. Al-Bazzar narrated that the Messenger of Allah is not one who practices augury, fortune-telling, or witchcraft. He stated that anyone who claims to know the unseen is either a fortune-teller or acting like one, as Allah is the only One who has knowledge of the unseen. Allah states that “none in the heavens and the earth knows the Ghayb (Unseen) except Allah”.

Do scientists think astrology is real?

Astrology has been criticized for making falsifiable predictions, with the most famous test conducted by Shawn Carlson revealing that natal astrology performed no better than chance. Astrology has not demonstrated its effectiveness in controlled studies and has no scientific validity, making it regarded as pseudoscience. There is no proposed mechanism by which the positions and motions of stars and planets could affect people and events on Earth in the way astrologers say they do, which does not contradict well-understood aspects of biology and physics.

Modern scientific inquiry into astrology primarily focuses on drawing a correlation between astrological traditions and the influence of seasonal birth in humans. Most professional astrologers rely on performing astrology-based personality tests and making relevant predictions about the remunerator’s future. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson emphasized the importance of knowing how the laws of nature shape the world around us, as without this knowledge, individuals can easily become victims of people seeking to take advantage of them.

Pursuing predictions about our destiny or personality takes power from God and gives it to something other than God, which is biblically sinful. A horoscope cannot change what God has already ordained before we were even created. A study by YouGov found that 37 of Americans under 30 believe in astrology, making it crucial to provide a biblical understanding of astrology to teens.

Does astrology have anything to do with science?

Astrology is not a scientific approach to answer questions, as astrologers often fail to critically evaluate the validity of their explanations. This is a crucial aspect of science, where scientists evaluate their ideas against natural evidence and reject or modify them when evidence doesn’t support them. Astrologers, however, do not take the same critical perspective on their own astrological ideas. A study by physicist John McGervey found no bias towards particular signs, indicating that the validity of astrological explanations is not supported.

When did people stop believing in astrology?

Astrology has been a scholarly tradition throughout its history, connected with other studies like astronomy, alchemy, meteorology, and medicine. However, new scientific concepts in astronomy and physics, such as heliocentrism and Newtonian mechanics, challenged its academic and theoretical standing. Astrology, in its broadest sense, is the search for meaning in the sky. Early evidence for humans making conscious attempts to measure, record, and predict seasonal changes by reference to astronomical cycles appears as markings on bones and cave walls, showing that lunar cycles were being noted as early as 25, 000 years ago.

Farmers addressed agricultural needs with increasing knowledge of the constellations that appear in different seasons, and used the rising of particular star-groups to herald annual floods or seasonal activities. By the 3rd millennium BCE, civilizations had sophisticated awareness of celestial cycles and may have oriented temples in alignment with heliacal risings of the stars.

Scattered evidence suggests that the oldest known astrological references are copies of texts made in the ancient world, such as the Venus tablet of Ammisaduqa, which is thought to have been compiled in Babylon around 1700 BCE. A scroll documenting an early use of electional astrology is doubtfully ascribed to the reign of the Sumerian ruler Gudea of Lagash, but there is controversy about whether these were genuinely recorded at the time or merely ascribed to ancient rulers by posterity.

The oldest undisputed evidence of the use of astrology as an integrated system of knowledge is attributed to the records of the first dynasty of Babylon (1950-1651 BCE), which had some parallels with Hellenistic Greek astrology.

Why is astrology considered witchcraft?

The conviction in malevolent spiritual entities gave rise to a dual condemnation of magical practices that sought to benefit humanity rather than cause harm, as well as divination techniques of all kinds. This was largely due to the fact that the ability to foresee and predict future events was often perceived as being closely associated with witchcraft.

When did astrology stop being a science?

The Silk Roads played a significant role in cultural exchange and the development of various scientific disciplines, including medicine, mathematics, geography, cartography, and astronomy. Astrology, a broad field concerned with the search for meaning and predictive information in the sky, was one such discipline that was widely accepted in political and cultural circles.

During the Tang (705-907 CE) period, foreign systems of astrology were adopted in China, particularly the practice of ‘horoscopy’, predictions made by an astrologer based on the position of the sun at the time of a person’s birth or the calendar significance of an event. Astrology often acted as a medium of transmission of other knowledge bases, predominantly from Indo-Iranian sources, especially within astronomy and the close mathematical observation of stars and planets.

Indian astrology was often introduced into new regions of Central Asia, the Iranian Plateau, and China alongside the introduction of Buddhism, another significant shared legacy of these trade routes. Early Islamic astrologers included numerous Indian theories in their works, most of which reached them via texts written in Middle Persian during a time when direct translations into Arabic of many scientific texts from Ancient Greek and Indian sources were made.

In Medieval Central Asia, two distinct versions of the discipline emerged: one focused on mathematical theories and precise astronomical measurements, and the other on the interpretation of magical elements to make predictions. Al-Biruni, a polymath, differentiated astrology from astronomy, arguing that the former was more of an art or practice and criticizing its weak mathematical and scientific foundations. He also emphasized his theory that astrology is not a science through analysis of astrological doctrines from Ancient Greece, the Indian subcontinent, the Iranian Plateau, and Central Asian regions.

Do Muslims study astrology?

Do Muslims study astrology?

Astrology, a popular practice in the modern world, has become increasingly popular due to its ability to provide insights into one’s personality and zodiac sign. However, it has also been criticized by older generations for being incompatible with Islam. Kaiser Aslam, the Muslim Chaplain at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, argues that astrology and astronomy were once the same field. He explains that many scholars of the past wrote books on astrology, but also commented on astronomy.

It wasn’t until around 400 or 500 years ago that these two fields shifted, and there is almost no disagreement that Islam has a significant connection with astronomy. This highlights the importance of understanding the interconnectedness of astrology and astronomy in the modern world.

  • I was a science major in University studying Chemistry. I am very analytical and skeptical of popular opinions. I first became curious about astrology in 1971 and began studying it then by applying scientific methods like: “What happens to Y as X approaches infinity?” In other words, when you look at extreme peoples charts like Hitler, Stalin, and serial killers does the results according to Astrology actually describe their character, desires, etc. ? It has been 43 years since my first introduction to Astrology and I know it works from years of researching the subject. I study astrology in a quasi-statistical way. Do the probabilities prove true? Yes, they do. Quantum Mechanics is way out there compared to Newtonian Physics when it comes to comprehending it. For example, the Heisenberg principle in Quantum Mechanics says that by merely observing something you change it. I have no clue about the mechanism by which the planets cause our personality, desires, motivations, etc. to change.I have no idea who or how these ideas originated. I just know from years of study that analyzing a person’s chart gives a very accurate description of them. Is it absolutely correct? Probably not. To understand them more precisely you must compare their charts to the people close to them like their parents in order to see what the interactions between charts would stimulate in their chart. It is a huge subject for sure!

  • What about the 9 months where the baby is forming in the womb? Arent the planets still affecting the growth the whole time? So that by the time of actual birth that is only the final arrangement? Maybe we have to study the whole 9 month period of movements of the planets and stars to get to the bottom of the real formation of the child?

  • Woah…. I just don’t care what people think about astrology. I absolutely believe in vedic astrology. But I don’t pity anyone for not believing in it or whatever because hey, my chart so accurately defines me. So it works for me. I’ve been really into vedic astrology since the first time I came across your articles. Thanks Kapiel, I learned A LOT.

  • when i look at my chart i have grown out of it …and many people i know have to..sure some energies still linger..but its proven our enviorment and our diets and our lifestyles make up a majority of our persona.. im born on the same day and about 17 minutes diff as my neighbor.. we are nothing alike and still share the same rising sign

  • Many astrologers don’t know that grahas( planets) are not the planets in the solar system but shakthis inside a person. Grahas means something that influences the mind that power is within. To understand astrology an astrologer should know Vedanta. Most astrologers study astrology books without having any knowledge in Vedanta.

  • Oh absolutely not, no, that’s why I keep telling people to study it for themselves, because it’s unbelievable…it fits to a T…Like my sister and father are the exact same people, they have the same personality, well turns out they’re 2 geminis with almost exact same charts, and every piece of every chart has fit the person perfectly. And like, Aries is the first sign, Pisces the last, you can tell the mental age of people based on their signs, and it always fits, it’s super accurate.

  • I have a suggestion, if they want to debunk or prove it is wrong, I think you should be an expert in astrology too.So to prove astrology is wrong, they will have to learn it thoroughly and then understand, analyze and come out with a theory of their own. That is more like what a researcher does/should do.Science never told you not to learn what is to be questioned? The analogy is what DiCaprio did in departed to expose Matt Damon 😛 . You need to think like a criminal to catch one!!

  • It does work. There is a bit of free Will but not in all areas. An astrologer predicted that I won’t be able to clear my Med school exams. I worked my ass off. Was super confident. Guess what. Didn’t clear. He then predicted that I would get into Med school after two years. This time I wasn’t that well prepared. Not confident. And I knew my level of preparation wasn’t upto the mark. I cleared and my rank was within top 10. If only hard work mattered, I should have been able to clear in my first attempt.

  • I am not an astrologer. I am never affected by anyone’s psychological wizardry. But planet’s patterns works. dont know why. This mystery has not been reconciled with science yet. may converge later . If I can feel momentum of those patterns so real, do I have to wait next 100 Einsteins to find its cause and only then trust? I will hardly live till next Einstein comes.

  • astrology in the western sense (the one you read in newspaper) is for people who are afraid to take responsibility for their actions and their outcomes. Yes the universe and planets may affect us, but the ultimate factor in our lives is how much responsibility we take for the things we do, and living life consciously and responsibly rather than defaulting to a zombie/automatic/subconscious state. Bruce Lipton: 95% of actions occur in subconscious state. All the more reason to live concsiously

  • I met a Bio chemistry scientist from ISRO who learnt Astrology for 7 years. Here are his words.. “Planets dont influence humans. However planets and their positions for some reason has been able to indicate what kinda person one would be when born at a certain time ..There is no evidence to know how it happens, they just know it happens. In other words planets are an indicators of how a person would be. Like Mars in Second house means a person would be someone who uses lot of fowl language in his normal conversations. That doesnt mean tht planet mars is actually making him use fowl language. Its only indicating that this person would be someone who uses fowl language in his normal conversations…Anothr thing is no astrologer knows how planets have been given “karakas”…like Sun represents father, Moon Represents Mother…Nobody knows on what basis is this Sun associated to Father..They just know its associated…So people who learn astrology just mug this up as its a basics of astrology….These predictions are only probabilities…it may not always be true…So is all sort of predictions..Doctors predict the date of delivery of the baby from the third month of pregnancy itself…But it rarely comes true…Weather Forecast is done and in India it also goes wrong…Stock market predictions done on certain past and present numbers..This also goes wrong…So predictions are always unscientific but is made on the basis of scientific calculations.”…….. I learnt astrology on my own together with genetics.

  • I’m currently investigating the veracity of astrology. Put simply I’m attempting to figure out if astrology could be an ancient form of psychology rooted in the science of astronomy. On the other hand could it simply be the parroting of ancient folklore? Astrology and astronomy separated due to the conclusions of Copernicus who deduced that the earth and other planets in our solar system orbit the sun. This does not invalidate astrology because astrology is, in part, about observations of the sky made from specific locations. Just as science moved on from the times of Ptolemy, one of the founders of astrology, we should not view astrology with the same kind of lens. In fact most of us do not do so. Instead we use the logic of Descartes and Newton to understand our world. This asserts that the universe is made of separate objects that are in relationships to each other. This distance may be measured via the modalities of space and time. But the science that the computer you are reading this upon is not Newton’s science. It is the science of quantum uncertainty and probability. The science by which we understand time and space is no longer Newton’s Laws of Motion but those of Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity (of which Newton’s Laws form a specific subset). Planets are not linked by invisible strings (unless you’re referring to String Theory) but they are better described as bubbles suspended within wavy planes of gravity. Their mass causing the distortions of gravity as well as time/space.

  • What gets me is that people argue as to whether Astrology is real or false, without ever defining what they mean by the term, there’s hundreds of different systems of Astrology, as well as a generic definition such as Astronomical objects &/or systems influencing behavior, which includes the circadian cycle & seasonality.

  • Whr have u explained about the correctness of astrology here no proof or anything. U r saying planets revolving around affects the people on Earth but how they r affecting by which force, how can planets nearby affects the same way as far away planets, moon is not a even a planet, how each planet affects every individual differently if the gravity is same on entire earth. Give us some concrete answers these r all ur beliefs if correct prove us.

  • Ya dude I am little bit confused because I have seen the articles that people proving astrology fake and dumb but I know that in my chart I have experienced lot of things those were described by my chart…. I also had studied famous people charts where I saw yogas which make them intelligent, famous and wealthy…….

  • I wouldnt classify astrology as science for obvious reasons, but I dont understand how people have a hard time comprehending that planets influence the events on earth, when science has mind blown us so many times like the bending of light, relativity, blackholes, quasars, quantum physics, but when someone postulates something about something that affects us on a personal level (Astrology), its suddenly ludicrous.

  • every one drinks and picese is the most prone to drinking out of water signs not cancer..the drinking theory was an example i used not me personaly i barley drink 5x a year lol that just shows ..you cant judge my sobriety on my chart..im not even in to drinking ..so now whats that say about cancers?? lol

  • You know what.. I think it’s even better that they don’t believe in astrology, because at least we understand the world better than they do. We can predict things and so on. It’s to our advantage! 🙂 I think it should stay a secret and people shouldn’t believe in astrology, that’s way there are religions and sciences. These things help people not to get involved in astrology (don’t know if that was made consciously or unconsciously). Though it’s quite funny that people believe in Jesus and those things instead of astrology, because guess which is more realistic thing :))) So, I think, let’s celebrate having such knowledge and don’t try to make people believe in it because the world would go mad if this would be scientifically proven to be real. Btw, love your articles!

  • I had a discussion with someone about astrology, I gotta be clear Im not well knowledged in astrology but believe in it generally. But I came with the point of scienctific data proofing the moon has impact on peoples emotions (crime data, stock trading fluctuations and likely more) and with that I would lay the question if we have proof the moon impacts us what about the rest of the universe. His response on the data of the moon was that that was Science. I laughed my ass off as he said scientific data of a astrological object is science and not astrology.

  • I feel if astrology din’t exist we all would be of same nature. Each person on this earth is different . Some are intelligent some aren’t, some are rich some poor, some lucky some unlucky. so if you see one’s chart you can predict a person’s behaviour and positive things that will happen in life. so its not completely false. Also i believe everyone is born with their karma. so it’s a combination of both. And if u notice why some people don’t work hard but they get success easily and some keep trying and they get success after struggle. Also have you heard that some people are god gifted. Their talents, skills etc no one can replace them.

  • I hate Ph.D owners making dumb statements. That’s why i dropped out of school. They kept telling me I can’t do astrology research. But yet they know nothing couldn’t even tell me a moon sign. Yet they think they have enough info to make a sound decision. ={ I hate science now. And i’ve been doing research for 3 years now.

  • Even if you were the greatest astrologer out there, you know you are not qualified for a rebuttal against anybody least against a physicist, Ph.d. Not only you did not present any of the “proofs” presented by the scientist but also you did not provide any compelling arguments in the favor of astrology. You simply don’t have that knack or articulation required to engage in a meaningful debate. Ok? So, please stop wasting everybody’s time, including your own. You are making a fool of yourself and thereby doing a disservice to the great knowledge of Vedic Astrology, or astrology in general. Instead, spend the quality time in doing actual research in Vedic astrology…you may stumble upon some unique knowledge. By the way, I believe in Vedic Astrology, have been studying it for decades and I am a physicist and an engineer both by education and profession, so I do understand a little of physics & astronomy. The force which keeps us bounded to the Earth is generally referred to as Gravitational force, not magnetic force, at least, as of now, in the current understanding of the natural forces to the humankind.

  • have you ever had expierence with x drug addict charts? new age meditation/yoga practitioners charts? people who changed diets?? i have seen many charts complete opposite of the person soley based on life and how people re modified there personalities …how the gemini moon learned to use therapy to speak less…how the capricorn learned to be more up beat by using therapy and group…all these things apply to how we behave

  • I can’t belive in astrology without real scientific explanation, but I can clearly see that people born in the same zodiac sign have some things incommon, and it’s always the same things that they have incommon. My point is that I don’t like an Idea that somenone can tell me my future, I don’t belive in destiny. But I refuse to pretend that there isn’t any truth about people’s personalities. So I think that human lack of knowlage is a prof for, or against astrology. And you could learn a bit more about physics, becasue some things you’ve said are wrong.

  • Idk if this comment reach to anyone but, Yea! One point is good that is “Don’t assume how astrology is created, try to find out how it was created”. Maybe the way we’re perusal it, it wasn’t like that in those times. Rest part, judging it, only one sentence Kapiel…I know you’re good at what you believe and I as a viewer appreciate that, and so many you astrological things I learned but Sir, you, tbh failed biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy on one go,Congratulations for that. Plus, you’re Indian, so you must embrace your accent as an Indian, you don’t have to pretend that “oh you’re wrong I’m amarican”, dude you got amaraican residency certificate by living there, but you can’t deny your ethnicity, and your accent is not so soothing for ears.

  • But you would be wrong, and that’s not how astrology goes. Nowhere does it say that “someone will plot against you”. You clearly have no knowledge of the branch at all, and so you’re wasting everybody’s time. I have never taken something to the bitter end, and I’ve done a multitude of things, unlike Taurus people who stick with one thing for extended periods of time. I’m an Aries, it fits me. Like Thom Yorke, he said in an interview that he’s great at starting things but never following through.

  • I have recently stumbled upon many articles of people ranting about how they don’t “believe in” astrology and attempting to insult anyone who shows interest in it. It’s pure comedy from both the article and the comments of people unwittingly showing their ignorance while thinking they are doing the mocking. I wonder, do they make articles about everything they aren’t interested in? They are all complete parodies of themselves.

  • Oye Kapiel… “Ye Log pagal hai”…. You yourself know that it takes great karma of past to believe in astrology …. As astrology is the toughest science ever created, even physics and all such theories are puny compared to Vedic Astrology. If everyone believed in astrology then the value of astrology would diminish. So let these people suffer in whatever karmas they have done in their past lives… Good people like us will try to help them whenever needed. I pity these people!!!

  • It is more important to find out the coordinations of star When I was in my mother womb because in that time my DNA was developed.. not at my birth time another thing… the instruments and people who were present in that operation theater have far more gravitational pull then that of the Mars and pluto at the time of my birth….

  • if a murder kill somebody its not his fault, its a planets fault, if good person becomes bad person, planets caused him to be like this. if we are meant to be controlled by planets then we don’t have to do anything, we are no longer responsible for our karma, planets are. you can do all the bad things and get away by blaming it on planets. i don’t understand Hinduism, one side they said our karma decide our past future and present, how is it fair when it is decided by planets.

  • One main thing that Astrology is in the wrong, is that, we humans are “influenced” by planets when we are born. But that doesn´t make sense, because the baby is still there, in the mothers belly (already under that supposedly influence). So, the force of planets must start their “influence”, at the conception moment, not at the birth (mother´s belly is not thick enough to be a “mercury´s ray protection”). So the allegedly planet´s influence, should start when the sperm meets the ovule. But that date cannot be known. You must ask your parents when then used to fuck, for a guessing. XD

  • It is our past karma that gives us such birth time and place etc. If your karma is great you’ll be born in good time and planetary positions. It is only your good karma that will make you believe in Astrology. You were not supposed to believe in this divine knowledge hence you don’t believe. Thanks to your past life’s karma.

  • i just told you i am pro astrology..i believe astrology i study astrology i just dont believe everything is soley based on astrology ..much things are influenced by upbringing,diet,nutrition,thoughts,expeierence..How could i be cheating a test that i actually support?? i dont drink sorry man never really was a big drinker or substance user…im old enough so its not happening when i get older..any one can develop a drinking habit regardless of the sign lol do you wanna do a full chart on me??

  • “By multiple different astrologists with different methods” sounds legit. I can guess people’s signs, it’s very obvious. If a person is a certain sign but acts a different way, you draw their chart and it turns out it’s very different to the sun sign. It’s always spot on, you clearly haven’t tested it! Stop wasting my time!

  • Ok, I sent a mail with the info at 12:35pm Natchitoche local time to chartastrology, an account I’ll give you the password to in a while. Can you tell me about your youth, did you do any sports, any hobbies, your friends, relationship with your parents, anything that stands out that we can use to compare your chart?

  • While I love krschannel I have to say that your description and analogy of radiation, energy and neurotransmitter are a bit flawed .. As the theory does make sense it also fails the fact that scientifically and studies shown our thoughts also induce our neurons like GABA, dopamine, serotonin Etc.. Even certain foods and diets, vitamins and wtb drugs and alchaol or medications .. So technically we are only out chart since birth ?? What about autistics ? Wtb some one with a Virgo and gemini(Tbc
