Magic Johnson, a Los Angeles Lakers legend and three-time NBA most valuable player, has become a living testament to advances in medicine that have turned human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from a death sentence into something that can be treated. Johnson opened up about living with the virus and his career in an exclusive interview for CBS Mornings nearly 30 years ago. On Sunday, the 30th anniversary of his decision to retire from basketball upon learning he had been diagnosed with HIV, Johnson revealed his HIV status in a press conference.
To raise awareness, Johnson appeared on the 1992 Nickelodeon HIV/AIDS special, A Conversation With Magic, surrounded by children, some of whom were also HIV positive. Since his retirement, Johnson has been an advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention and safe sex, as well as an entrepreneur, philanthropist, broadcaster, and motivational speaker. He is now the chairman and CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises.
Johnson played 13 seasons in the NBA, all with the Los Angeles Lakers. He owns stakes in three Los Angeles-based sports teams, including MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers. Outside of sport, Johnson has investments in a trio of Los Angeles professional sports franchises, including the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks and MLB’s Los Angeles Sparks.
A five-time NBA champion with the Lakers and three-time NBA most valuable player, Johnson is currently part-owner of teams in four US sports leagues.
