The story revolves around Ji Chang-woook, who is a character in a fairytale series. The drama is a must-watch if the viewer wasn’t rushed to finish it in one day. Overall, The Sound of Magic is a delightful and memorable drama that offers a unique blend of musical and K-Drama elements.
Why is The Sound of Magic so good?
The Sound of Magic, a Korean drama, has set a new high standard for its musical genre, with actors and actresses showcasing their talents. Ji Chang Wook, who has practiced magic for three months before acting, has put in significant effort in the production. The drama music, particularly the flying silhouettes of Ah Yi and Lee Eul, evokes a dreamy style of Disney classics, with the merry go round song where Lee Eul and Ah Yi fly into the sky with their horses.
The performances of Ah Yi and Ji Chang Wook are impressive, with Ah Yi singing well while crying and having emotional expressions, while Wook’s beautiful smile and singing skills are admirable. The graphic representation of the original WEBTOON is also impressive, with the drama being performed in a musical form, leaving the stage more exaggerated and surreal. This transition between reality and dreamy songs takes the audience to a space of fantasy, then gently brings them back to the brokenness of the world with a lingering feeling of hurt and sadness. The production and camera team are praised for their well-thought-out work.

Here’s my own analysis of the ending: The ending was purposely done so the viewers will not focus on the magic element, but rather the journey and growth of the main leads. It is also a subtle way for us to also see society issues, especially for children such as issue of the current way most adult see of education and the show also subtly tackles on depression. I also think it tackles how most adults treat children, especially the abusive employer who takes advantage of children with problems, the parents of Il Deung, and the teacher. As for the magic element, I think that in this story, the magic that Min Hyuk do to Ah Yi when helping her was real magic but is only limited when helping her and even then is still limited to certain extent. I guess his real magic only activates when he helps someone to make them truly smile so that’s why when he helped Ah Yi solved her money problems, he failed (only prop money was generated) because that would not make her truly be happy, the same is also true when he helped Ah Yi with the abusive employer but I think it was partly activated when she checks after where was the boss that’s why she didn’t see him. The hint was the butterfly. The nail in the coffin was the police near the end asked Ah Yi if she was in the amusement park because they were flabbergasted that they saw flash of lights on that day, and that day was the day Ah Yi was shown the fireworks when she was transported to the Ferris Wheel. The butterfly (either the butterfly itself or the necklace) was always present when real magic was activated.
Ji chang Wook is the most versatile actor I have ever seen. He can make me cry, and laugh. I live in America, and I am hooked on Korean dramas. There is good lessons to learn in every one of them. For the most part they are clean to watch, great actors and actresses and you can learn so much about Korean people. They respect their elders and are taught manners. The men seem to really know how to treat women. I love my country but we could learn a lot from these wonderful south Korean people.
I absolutely loved the show. I was afraid I would not like it due to it being a musical but I truly loved the songs that were not too present, just right. There was a needed dose of magic and a good reflection on the pressure of societal norms as well as the passage to adulthood. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I really liked it, as an middleaged adult : working, paying your bills and being programmed/brainwashed by parents, teachers and society you risk to forget the miracles in live. You lose your connection with your heart ( which is endless), your inner child and with spirit and live in your mind ( which you only have to use to think). The first 2 songs in the movie made me cry because it felt so sad that with growing up and living up to expectations of others instead of living your own life according to what makes you happy. It is so sad and painful when you lose the connection with your innerchild, the purity and joy. I think people should try to cherish that connection their entire life so even at the age of 80 you still have that joyful child inside that believes in magic….🦋💖
The post credit scene doesn’t really continues the story, but gave me a feeling that it could have season 2. Great show, it has exceeded my expectations. The only loose end I didn’t get (I didn’t read the webtoon) is that rash in the boys’s neck. What did that mean, after all? Ji Chang Wook was charming as ever, the girl also sings so beautifully, the songs are enchanting…
This series was really needed at this time. The beauty and innocence of magic stayed present The whole series. I thought it was really lovely to see the friendships grow, and especially with the magician and the teen,it wasn’t cringy or creepy,he held his position as someone to look up to,which can be devastating if it turned sexual. Very happy and upbeat visual feast for all of us that DO BELIEVE IN MAGIC.Xx
BCP says, “I find The Sound of Magic a very unique story. It kept me perusal it. I was a teacher, and I had seen a lot of heartache among students (in my case, deaf students). Every student/child should be happy to dream without us telling them they can’t do it. I believe each student will website his/her dream to the right one without any negative comments or put-downs.”
well said explanation..It’s definitely about hopes, believes, caring, depression, dark, so many emotions that have meaning behind in the same time it give u the fancy show in reality world In my opinion for what i get, living the dream not that bad in order to continue living in life but if u really a believer …& don’t push yourself out of limits u will lose urself whatever it’s right or wrong eventually u will get hurt
I really enjoyed this series. There are definitely lessons to be learned and lots to think about, especially about the pressures that are bestowed upon us. Overall it was a very well made series. The ending was disappointing, but only because it felt like a cliffhanger, leaving you wondering what happened to the Magician and the male student. Thumbs up for me!
The show was brilliant, so different from the majority of k-dramas I’ve watched so far, original, interesting and meaningful. Although I have to admit I was reluctant to watch it at first,I’m so glad I did. My beloved actor Ji Chang Wook proved his super talent once more,as well as the rest of the cast. All in all, this show was the pleasant surprise of the year!
The show was the best show I’ve ever seen. It had so many unexpected twists and turns that you don’t know what’s going to happen next. It also had deep reflections on growing up and becoming an adult and loosing the belief in magic as well as the magic of being a child during childhood. The songs and the music were enjoyable to listen that it made me want to listen to them all day. I am wishing for a second series.
When I was perusal this kdrama I was confused on why he always said his magic was real when everything he did was a trick. But then after perusal it more and witnessing the events between the magician and Ahyi, I figured out that the magic he had was to make people feel better and happy. All the times he showed Ahyi magical things was the magic that was real.
i loved it but i got really confused at the end as to whether the magic is real or not. When he made the boss disappear it turned out he had pushed him. When that young girl caught him on camera and snooped around he choked her and through his fit of rage hurt his parrot. He literally fell into madness so i’m honestly confused how that wasn’t addressed? plus what happened to the boy with the glasses (sorry names have left my brain) ? we don’t really know what he decided to do and where he went? is the magic real or is it hallucinations? because when glasses boy breaks down and throws a chair you see him look at the light and a butterfly but no one else seems to be able to see it? i don’t know :,) because the girl becomes a party magician afterwards so does that mean magic is as real as you make it? and the last few things she says to the magician is “your a real magician because you made me believe magic is real” or something along those lines IM JUST SO CONFUSION. but the concept was so cool
I personally think he really had magic and that in the end when he disappears he actually just got sent to a safer place, where people can’t find him, at least for now… This thought also tells me that, maybe.. the magician will come back someday to see how his successor is doing but… idk what comes after the but, I can’t exactly put my finger on it yet This really makes me want to believe that there is gonna be a season 2 but we don’t know yet. Guess we will have to wait and see
I am a new fan of Ji Chang Wook. This series is the first thing I’ve seen him in and now I’m hooked on his talent to make me feel love. It lead me to other films he’s been in such as Lovestruck in the city. Both of these films made me want to hold him until he felt better. I really wanted to take away all of his pain. What Talent this man has. Singing voice is also very soothing. He could sing me to sleep for sure. Certainly I hope there is a season II for this series. I would love to see Ri-eul and Ah-Yi get together despite their age difference. The way he looks at her with so much compassion and genuine love. I think I’m jealous. <3
This show was very unexpected for me. It spoke to me and I could relate to the story . This drama is unlike anything I have ever seen before and was beautifully written and produced. After I finished it I found myself thinking about it over and over and the Peter Pan storyline really did stand out. My daughter and I watched the whole series on Mother’s Day. We loved it.
there are a lot of good messages they tried to give though after reading the manhwa, i think there are things they could’ve included in the drama more to make it less confusing but the drama did well on the manhwa as well. i think whats confusing in this drama was how they made his magic seem legit in the story like the day with fireworks and lots of lights which isnt as enforced in the manhwa and is just shaken off as a dream/imagination. other scenes are all just his little trickery in the manhwa. because they focused on the security cam capturing the “magic” it distracted me at the end asking myself if magic legit in this story’s universe? and missed the important message
They want season 2 but it’s been 7 or probably 8 years since Author made a original webtoon… He haven’t made his season 2 on his webtoon after the first season… Probably they won’t make it… Netflix didn’t renew it… Or the director finished the story without telling that they will get season 2 because Author of the Sound of Magic didn’t make his season 2 since he finished it…
In my opinion, it is a happy ending. Lee doesn’t go to prison, Yoon grows up to be a happy adult, the real murderer goes to prison. This show really made me believe in magic. This show showed me so much, so many emotions, twists…. 🤨But, do you believe in magic💫. (btw idk if it’s Ri or Lee, Google says Lee but netflix Ri)
I know this is quite irrelevant but the way you say the MC’s name is “ah ē” her name is quite important because it means “child” in Korean. In one of the scenes L said,”Even if you are an adult people will still call you ai (child). Also Illdung’s name is also important because it means “first place” which kinda represents how he is like first glance. I know it isn’t all that relevant to the article but I just wanted to point this out.
After long & deep thought, despite the all characters story behind. It’s about dream, hope & imagination. When you believe, You see wht you want to see & you feel what you want to feel, work of mind. Believe in magic means believe in yourself, believe wht you want to imagine, ur right feeling, dream, hope to be happy & free. In reality life is tough..’believe in magic’ give some hope for certain people to continue their life.. make life easier & there some hope. Metaphor. They give this drama without solid closure or explanation only for you to decide & believe on ur own. When your life is easier & happy you won’t related. When you hv hard time in ur life, you wish and look for miracle like magic.
I never thought I would say that when it comes to musical but man that show is spot on. Honestly K- drama is the best thing happened to Netflix. Although I beleive the plot was perfect in term the final episode got everything covered and Netflix doesn’t necessarily owe us a season 2. But man I don’t wanna see anything the way I wanna see S2 for this one. I would totally lose my shit over it.
The theme to this story revolves around two types of Magic 0 one is described as being fake and the other real… The Magician claiming that while some magic is fake …his magic is real. Under extreme duress, the main character’s real world blurs into a magical one – one might argue of self deception. Her real world is where power to use to bully, deceive and to oppress the weak and the poor. Reality’s cruel illusion is portrayed by the MC chasing after her money as it is blown by the wind. If both magic and reality use deception, and trickery, what set real or good magic from bad or fake magic … is the same thing that makes reality good or bad… that is intent and outcomes.. the Magician used deception to uplift the MC out of despair and to push for justice if not happiness when the real world seem indifferent to oppression and cruelty.
DO NOT WATCH until you watch these 6 episodes; see if YOU analyze and understand the ending first. Watch to see if you did and congratulate yourself if appropriate. This is once of the best Drama series imho, a lot packed into six episodes that will amaze you and have you wondering, what next? I would love to see a series 2 on what happened to each character and where they are in life now.
Spoilers: I feel it was slow in places that really should have sped up and sped over things that were left without proper explanation or build up but it was enjoyable and the only best song was the magician singing, the rest were so so (IMO). The ending ep felt rushed despite its length and didn’t give clear distinction to whether he was really magic and just seen as mentally ill or if all his magic could be explained and he really was ill, not both at the same time. There was no hint at what happened to the boy at the end, just the girl (sorry I’m not good with Korean names) and the boy was kept out of the way with a random fight and his crush for the girl lead nowhere. Though I was half prepared for a tragically devastating ending for the magician so at least I’m glad I was left hopeful. And the brilliant song the magician sings gives me a sense of unease after I realise another girl was being murdered during the fireworks. Her death was a little lost and forgotten in the busy finale and so was the one I called the “mean girl” throughout. And poor Bella the parrot!
To those who are disappointed on the ending because they didn’t meet or whut, maybe you have to learn to believe in magic too. He disappeared because Ahyi who performed it believed in magic and his absence proved that the magic was real. In the manhwa, the last panel showed an ‘invitation’ on the mail box similar to the invitation ildeung and ahyi received, and it is intended for the audience/viewers. Learn to embrace your inner child and believe in magic again maybe you’ll realize how great Annarasumanara is. Still one of my favorites!! p.s. the real disappointing part about this adaptation (although it’s not necessary) was it didn’t include the scene of adult Ahyi and Ildeung’s relationship status (yes they’re still closeee at that time and i will always ship them hehe)
I think the importance wasn’t whether he is a real magician, its our belief and faith in him. Thats what magic is anyway, it is real if you believe it is. And, what is “magic” anyway? Logical tricks? Scientific? Illusions? Its whatever it means for you. Just lile how Ri Eul said the ball and flower tricks are performance tricks, but the real magic is making Ah Yi smile
What i think about the end. I know they age and wow, no hate here for NY opnion. I don’t think the end sooo good, maybe bc i am a fan of happy endings, BUT ANYWAYS, i really just wanted to see they together, like, livings they lives and doing magic together. I shipp Ah yi with him, yea, but i not saying like “YEAH GO GO MARRY”, no, bc she’s too young and maybe him toooo old. I was expecting they in the future to became a couple. I really love when he helped her, and protect (in the scene he made the street lights turn on for her, in the night), and i also believes her makes him happy too. The last dance made me cry so much, they smiles BRO😭
This not totally teach us to believe in magic literally but be responsible with our dying dreams and losing our true identity. “You should do whatever it is you want to do just as much as the things you don’t want to do.” -magician. From the point also of magician, “I just need someone who can tell me that no matter what others say, it’s not important, and someone who believes me. That’s all I need”, that’s a hint also for believing in your own no matter what other people think of you and focus on those who believe, that’s the true definition of success that’s why he keep on asking “Do you believe in magic” and if anyone believes, that’s how his magic activates.
Loved the show. I thought the ending set up for season 2. If not, it left up to each viewer’s interpretation. 💖💖💖 Ji Chang Wook did an excellent job. I felt like he drew inspiration from Michael Jackson (the story also reminded me of him) & Johnny Depp in Charlie & The Chocolate Factory (which many said was inspired by MJ also). I do believe in Magic. 🪄✨
Cherished every microminute of Sound of Magic 🪄!!!!!! Thank you so much for such a lovely presentation…. Transported me into a very different world… such perfect expressions from 𝒋𝒄𝒘 … am in awe completely!!! 😎👏😊😌😊𝒋𝒄𝒘 nailed it completely!!!!!! Thank you ..Sound of magic ..it’s a deep meaning tale that doesn’t imposes a tutorial of what’s the solution but recognizes the issues of the pressure of living life on the beaten path, impact of trying to break out, stunting the ability of a magnificent mind to known options of expression🙇♀️🙇♀️🙇♀️
I enjoyed this drama very much. The acting, singing, magic and storyline was brilliant. In a world with Covid and wars. It is wonderful to immerse yourself into this excellent drama. I recommend this to all the family. I do believe in magic especially when Ji Chang Wook is the magician. He is an excellent role model for the younger actors. Annara Sumanara 🎩🦜🥰
I’m actually crying… this role is just perfectly written for Ji Chang Wook! he has been stating so many times that he is actually very innocent minded and would like ppl to let him embrace his childishness sometimes I can’t wait to see this sparkling side of him It feels like he’s letting us see behind his curtains for once…
I can’t help stoping crying while perusal the official trailer. It’s so touching and I believe the childlike pure-hearted magician will make us recall our deep in heart dreams. I am expecting for Ji Chang Wook’s great acting and beautiful voices and the other main leading actress/actor’s great performance to make this drama successful. Wishing May 6 to come earlier. Wookie, fighting.
It’s all so magical… I want to take this time to appreciate everyone involved in making this beautiful show… Thank you to the director for telling Ha Ilkwon(Webtoon writer) 10 years ago that it would be cool to make his work into article form… Thank you to the screenwriter, who was challenged to translate the way the story unfolded in the webtoon… thank you to the music directors, who spent 18 months recording, perfecting, making lyrics… To the lyricists who took so much time making sure that the songs conveyed how each character feels at a certain moment… To our cast!!!! Who had to go to vocal lessons, film, record, and perfecting everything! I will appreciate this show with all that I can, and just from this trailer I can say that everything was worth the wait!!! Gonna cry buckets
I’ve always struggled perusal high school dramas because my experience of those years were so painful, lonely, and desperate. Each day was just hanging on for dear life. I would’ve done anything to have someone bring hope and magic to my life. This show lets that teenage girl in me feel seen and uplifted.
After perusal the series, I can safely say it took a lot not to cry. I didn’t expect it to be short, I wasn’t even sure what to expect with each episode, was looking for a big twist, but it was so simple it snuck its way through the cracks of my grown-up heart into my inner child. Definitely a magical experience
This is the most beautiful drama I’ve ever seen. It was so magical and the songs were so beautiful. It teaches you a lot of lessons and there are deep meanings. I love Chang Wook’s character in here. He did it perfectly. I wish it could have 10 episodes instead of 6. Overall, please prepare to cry out your eyes. Tip: Watch this at nighttime with the lights turned off for a better cinematic experience! (6/16/22)
It’s still just the trailer but I sobbed at how beautiful it is to witness such a wonderful and heartfelt webtoon finally come to life 😭🥺❤ been waiting for this for so long and it honestly looks promising and true to its material. Plus, it’s a musical to make it all the better! The casts looks so perfect too! Can’t wait for the release 🤍❄
i am still not over this drama. i watch it every once in a while. it is so good. it truly feels magical in the way it transports you into this world. it makes you think about life.. the lessons of mental illness, social stigma, being forced on path laid out for you, where you are trapped, and being poor and trapped in that way too. believing you can change your life like magic, if you are on a path you don’t want to go down. and not caring what others think of you. 🌺 VERY powerful story. all three characters moved me so much. truly a gem of a show. it will always be remembered by me as one of my favorite shows ever. 💕
This looks beautiful beyond words. In many ways Annarasumanara has the essence of Peter Pan, The Greatest Showman, Professor Layton and the bit toward the end immediately reminds me so much of Edward Scissorhands. I feel like this drama will light up our inner child, the self that didn’t hesitate to dream. Can’t wait for it to air, everything looks so magical ❤️
I was worried in the beginning when whole high school was dancing in the opening this would not be for me. Then Ji Chang Wook starts singing and I’m hooked!!! 🙆🏻♀️ I love your heartfelt singing and joined with the little girl singing I could barely catch my next breath and smiling endlessly to your performance. This is such new side to kdrama only on episode 2 amazing choice for you Ji Chang. Of course I have to add you look amazingly handsome and your voice just makes your fans melt 🥰
i read the manhwa after i saw the teaser and im so excited on this one!! i fell in love with the story and how it is so relatable in this modern society on how it portrays about growth, dreams, being a child and an adult, having mental illness, poverty, pressure, etc.!! i saw some similar scenes from the manhwa in this trailer and i really cant wait to see it onscreen!! im in love with teaser trailer, it really truly feels like magic and cant wait for the songs, the snippets already sound so beautiful!! im so excited to see ji chang wook, choi seung eun and hwang in yeop as L (Lee Eul), Ai, and Ildeung!!!
I just finished the last episode with my mom (She’s so in love with Hwa In-Yeop lol). I loved it, It made me think, cry and laugh. It really made me to re-think if the way I’m living life is really the way I want it to…or if I’m just doing what everyone else is supposed to do. It was heartwarming ❤️
I so can’t wait to see this the minute it comes out,It looks spectacular! Especially having Ji-Chang-wook as the male lead,He never disappoints when it comes to his acting! I remember i watched “suspicious partner” when I first started perusal kdramas back in 2019,It was one of the very first kdramas I’ve ever watched and I immediately fell in love with his acting and his charming personality! Honestly one of the best Korean actors out there that are of the same age range 🤍 This looks like such a heart-felt and beautiful kdrama and the visuals are amazing!,It kinda gives you the vibe that it’s not for anyone or the universe to decide whether there’s such thing as magic and that it’s up to yourself to consider what does magic mean to you, what do you consider magic and if you have faith and believe in the meaning of magic 🤍 Magic can be in any form,It’s not just the meaning that we got to know, see and grew up with as kids like card tricks or pulling a rabbit out of a hat 🃏🐰🎩 What makes this kdrama worth the wait and incredible even before it gets released is the fact that this is a musical kdrama which is quite rare and I don’t think has been made before or if it has it’s one of the fewest ones out there,I think that the writers and producers of this kdrama is trying to bring out a new meaning to magic and to show people that it’s not silly or childish to believe it in and I feel like it’s going to be a beautiful one 🤍🪄✨ Annara sumanara 🎩🦋🎪✨
Already finished reading the webtoon and been waiting for this drama since then, I can really say that Korea did an awesome job making this drama, the webtoon itself was already complicated so I was I little worried for the outcome of this drama and they surprisingly nailed it just by looking at the trailer 😭😭😭😭 I can’t wait for May to come!
I am very shocked that the webtoon is being made into a kdrama I read it five years ago. It was an amazingly beautiful read. It’s very short only 27 episodes on webtoon. I had thought this webtoon was so underrated and am pleasantly surprised by this. I hope to see Spirit Fingers made into a kdrama as well someday! 🥺🙏🏾
I just started perusal this drama and it feels so new to me ‘Cause i’ve been perusal K dramas since around 2010 but never ever seen a K drama like this before. It feels like i’m perusal a Disney movie. I totally enjoy perusal this and Changwook is so handsome i wanna hug him hehe and also the leading actress reminds me of Sulli, same features. She’s so pretty and the nerd school boy is so cute too
I am so glad they’re sticking to the same vibe the webtoon had! It would be better if it’s in black and white but I like how they made things more “magical” in their own way!! The author really made it hard to see this masterpiece in a live action format because of how innovative their art style is! I hope they also experimented more with this drama! I don’t care about realism! Because that’s one thing the author did! Made things realistic with the plot and made things “magical” with their unique art style!! Kinda wanted Inyeop to be in that “long face” (you’ll know what i mean if you read it😂) I also cannot wait to see the money scene and the big revelation!!!!! I grew up reading the webtoon so I have many expectations! I just really hope this live action would do it justice because the webtoon is just top notch!!
Y’all trust me this ones the best!.. i was actually tryna find smthg with less episodes and with no expectations i have watched this (also for ji chang wook TT)! and- I FREAKING NEED MORE!!.. 6 episodes ain’t enough for this masterpiece story line..I highly recommend this drama for high schoolers!.. This really did made an impact on me.. And gave the courage to make a pact with me and believe in myself to become a better adult than anyone else i’ve around me right now irl!.. tbh the only thing made me even more obsessed with this is ji chang wook! 🙁 godd i love him so much, he is such a comfort, just his presence comforted me a lot.. and the main antagonist (fl) of this series made a real nice impression on me.. not to forget, our Inyeop!! he gave his fullest for this one too!.. ‘The sound of magic’ literally felt like a song-like-story telling, even the actors have participated in the vocals of the ost’s which makes their singing even more realistic!.. i never really cry that ease! But this series made me cry tbh :’) and this whole drama felt like a warm hug overall<3
This comic was really really awesome and I loved it. when I see the words which I read are acted by persons it’s really heartwarming and those words( do you believe in magic) wow :))) It was wholesome when I read. I am looking for this, I am on cloud nine after seeing this… thankyou author and the one who decided to make it, coz u filled magic in my life also ur gonna do the same for all who see this…
I have read the webtoon before perusal the drama. And i just feel the need to say, that Ji Chang wook hit the nail with his acting! He played the role of ‘R’ so well, I don’t even have words for it! Like, ‘R’ is a character who is warm yet mysterious yet creepy. And Ji Chang Wook has nailed it. All of it! Damn, Off you go, Ji Chang Wook!
omg this K-Drama is so beautuful. I love the songs. But the reason why I started perusal this series. Is Hwang in Yeop. I watched True Beauty before and was so impressed by the actor (I didn’t know him before) I thought to myself, wow, who is this guy and then I really had to find out where else he was playing. Na Ill Deung and Han Seo Jun are so different I mean Ill Deung is the nerdy type, he is good at school and rather reserved, while Seo jun is rebellious, he is the bad boy in true beauty who says what he thinks and does Whatever he does, he doesn’t mince his words. And the more series you watch with HIY, you see what a brilliant actor he is. His smile, his emotions are so good. But every time I see him, even in The Sound of magic, I think of that one scene from True Beauty. Imagine Ill Deung dancing Okey Dokey Yo.XD And I love Ji Chang wook, too this man is amazing, his acting and his voice. He can sooo good sing, and he looks so good too. Hwang in Yeop and Ji Chang wook are just love.❤
