What Transpires At The Election Ceremony?

The Rite of Election is the second liturgical step in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, marking the end of the period of the catechumenate and beginning the period of purification. It is usually celebrated on the First Sunday of Lent, this year, February 21, 2021, during Mass by the diocesan bishop or his delegate. The rite marks the entry into the final phase of their preparation to receive the sacraments of initiation, usually at the Easter Vigil.

The diocesan bishop is the proper minister of the Rite of Election (RCIA, 12). There is a Rite of Sending to Election provided in the ritual book for candidates who are preparing for Confirmation and First Eucharist or Reception into the full. The rite should normally take place on the First Sunday of Lent, with the presiding celebrant being the Bishop or his delegate.
