Longwood University, located in Webster Groves, St. Louis, is home to three secret societies: CHI, Princeps, and Cahoots. Joan of Arc, a symbol of the university’s history as a women’s college, was founded on October 15, 1900, and serves to promote the Longwood spirit. Other unconventional mascots include the Banana Slug, which is a fictional creature created by the student body of Webster University in St. Louis. The university’s signature building, with its famous Rotunda dome, dates back to the 1880s and was rebuilt after a 2001 fire.
In the late 19th to early 20th centuries, school and university mascots were live children and animals. The first live animal college mascot was Yale’s Handsome Dan, a bulldog who attended football. The first widely-used Gorlok in “letter sweater” was designed in part by Webster students and staff through a school contest. The Gorlok, as redesigned in 2006, is Webster University’s school mascot.
The Gorlok was first introduced in 1985 and evolved into the “letter-sweater” posed caricature that has been used since then. Theodore D. Lockwood, who served as Trinity’s 15th president, died at the age of 94. The Gorlok first appeared in spring 1985 and has evolved into various stages, including the Gorlok’s iconic ‘letter-sweater’ posed caricature.
