When Were Magic Mushrooms Found?

Magic mushrooms, also known as “magic mushrooms” or “shrooms”, have a long history dating back thousands of years. The term “magic mushrooms” was introduced in 1957 in a Life Magazine exposé. Psilocybin mushrooms were researched from the 1950s to the 1970s by prominent academics, including Harvard University’s Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (later Ram Dass). American scientists began studying “shrooms” in the late 1950s, with Swiss scientist Albert Hofmann being the first person to extract the psychoactive compounds found in nearly all species of Psilocybe.

The first evidence of magic mushroom use dates back to 10,000 BCE, with cave paintings in Australia suggesting that mushroom-induced trances were part of indigenous culture there. In 1956, Roger Heim identified the psychoactive mushroom the Wassons brought back from Mexico as Psilocybe, and in 1958, Albert Hofmann first identified psilocybin and psilocin as the active compounds in these mushrooms. Psilocybin and psilocin, the psychoactive compounds found in nearly all species of Psilocybe, have shown promise as a treatment for conditions.

Psilocybin is a chemical obtained from certain types of fresh or dried mushrooms. The first documented recreational use of psilocybin mushrooms growing outside Mexico occurred in Vancouver in 1965. In 1965, the RCMP confiscated Psilocybe semilanceata, but it has since been discovered that only one of the nearly 200 species of psychedelic mushrooms, Psilocybe semilanceata, grows in any country.

  • Cool article. Teonanacatl actually means Sacred Mothers Sustenance. Teo (Sacred Energy) Nan (as is Tonantzin – Venerable Mother) Nacatl (Sustenance). Teotl was incorrectly translated as god and nanacatl as either mushroom or flesh. Source is the teacher Arturo Meza, and other people still speaking the language and living the culture.

  • As someone who saw god, died and became energy, sound, color and felt every emotion at once and then chose to come back to life after ceasing to be, I get why they’re illegal. We expected a nice fun trip with drawing and a movie. What we got was transcendence to a higher plane of consciousness. As an experienced psychonaut I was even freaking out. After 4 hours of no longer being, I came down to tripping balls and that was a relief. Beautiful experience, but someone who doesnt know what the abyss is could easily get lost in there and ens up hurting themselves or scaring their family. Definitely going back though, most intense trip of my life. Penis envy 🔥

  • I recently went to my favorite pizzaria with my girlfriend and ordered a large…one topping…thin crust pizza pie with extra sauce. We chose mushrooms for the topping. We ate the whole pizza…and then we went to the local planetarium for a “lazer light show” featuring “The Dark Side Of The Moon” by Pink Floyd. We spent the entire light show waiting to”trip”. Well…nothing happened…and my girl was so pissed off that she ran out of the planetarium and broke up with me via text the next day…

  • I am not well researched on this topic, but Im somewhat skeptical of the conclusion that these ancient paintings depict psilocybin mushroom use…whos to say they dont just depict any old species of mushroom? Mushrooms in general have a distinctive appearance that often causes them to stick out from their surroundings, and would likely attract the curiosity of prehistoric humans who knew little about them.

  • If you watch ants documentary, you will realize that the stoned ape theory is possible. The ants are intelligent because they do mushroom farming. Every ants have work, from farming to soldier to teaching the little ants. They must have come across psilocybin mushroom because they both belong on the ground. Same as apes

  • And they were also used for desgusting brutal human sacrefice… you forgot to mention that. If they were really something wow these south american civilizations would never be at war with each other and not to mention practice human sacrefice!! Its like offering the kids a delicious cookie and than snatch them and make their life a nightmare!!!
