In order to reset a keyboard, it is first necessary to release it, then press the power button. The keyboard should then be pressed once to turn it back on, ensuring that it is in a factory reset state and ready to be paired with a new device.

How long should Magic Keyboard last?

The Magic Keyboard is a wireless and rechargeable keyboard designed for Mac and Apple Vision Pro, offering a comfortable and precise typing experience. It has a long-lasting internal battery that can power the keyboard for about a month or more between charges. The product must be in its original condition with all included parts, accessories, and packaging.

Can you fold a Magic Keyboard flat?

The Magic Keyboard is an odd keyboard case that cannot be folded flat as a folio case, making it difficult to use as a laptop or fold it shut. iPads can also be used as sketchpads and readers, but this requires removing the case with magnets. The old Smart Keyboard cover is more flexible but not compatible with Magic Keyboard-compatible iPads (Air, Pro). The price of $300 or $350 for the 12. 9-inch version is high, especially considering the entry iPad costs about the same amount.

A new model could make the Magic Keyboard more affordable, as having a good keyboard on the go is increasingly useful with iPadOS. Despite this, the Magic Keyboard remains a favorite among users, but it can sometimes be strange.

Did Apple discontinue Magic Keyboard?

Apple has confirmed that its space gray Magic Keyboards, Trackpads, and Mice are being discontinued. The accessories are currently available for purchase on Apple’s store page, but with a “while supplies last” message. Apple confirmed to The Verge that it will no longer sell the space gray accessories after stock runs out, but the silver variants will still be available. The discontinuation of the space gray accessories raises questions about whether Apple will continue to use the dark color in the rumored redesign or if it will follow the colorful route with the new iMacs. The “while supplies last” label only applies to the space gray version.

Can you sell old keyboards?

If you’ve recently purchased a wireless keyboard, you may be wondering what to do with your old gear. Electronics often lose value over time, making it difficult to recover profits. If your old keyboard is still in working condition, you can sell it on the Facebook marketplace, eBay, or Amazon, but be aware of the fees. If your keyboard is functional but new, you can repurpose or donate it to prolong its lifecycle, reduce costs, and protect the environment.

Recycling keyboards is an excellent way to minimize the negative impact of manufacturing processes and overuse of raw materials. Remember, recycling is a sustainable way to dispose of old electronics, as they contain toxic but valuable components that shouldn’t end up in landfills.

  • Thank you for explaining: 1. This doesn’t apply just to Apple but ALL RESELLERS in the UK., 2. doesn’t cover accidental damage, 3. and your illustrated situation applies ONLY to only the UK. Thank you for being forthright with this because too many people will take only what they want to hear and run with it. Awesome job doing your homework on this.

  • I used this exact consumer law rights to get a free battery replacement after owning a 2014 MacBook Pro for 4 years. That would’ve cost me £450 to replace haha! This article is good to make everyone aware of this as I’ve been telling ALL my friends and family to use this powerful right for YEARS now! Legendary article to put out as always! Keep up the amazing content! 🙌🏼

  • I have an old MacBook Pro from early 2015. It has a problem with the battery; it says battery Service is recommended, and the 13inch 2015 Macbook is not yet vintage. I use Mac Big Sur macOS 11.6.8. The first MacBook Pro 13 came back in March 2016. I got my main second Mac mini (M1, 2020) last Dec 2021. Today, I will be contact Apple support for this problem, I had it seven years, I hope it fix or replace and I will be use my customer rights law.

  • A few things missing in this article. The Consumer Rights Act says that consumers must receive products that are 1. Fit for purpose 2. As described, or as seen in a sample 3. Of satisfactory quality Item 2 also apply to digital goods. In this case, claiming for Apple products usually comes under “satisfactory quality” and without defect. Within 30 days, you can ask for a full refund. This is the right to reject. Beyond that, the seller can offer a repair or replacement before you can ask for a partial refund. This is the final right to reject. If this final rejection is within 6 months, the seller cannot deduct anything from your refund for use of the product, i.e. you can claim a full refund. There is no mention of a 6 year cap in the law, but a contract between the consumer and the seller can lay out the limits on claims provided that it is not unfair.

  • A lot depends on how friendly your Apple Store is. I’ve gotten several free repairs when I shouldn’t just because they were being nice. For instance, my wife dropped a 6-month old iPhone in the toilet, and we told them that. They replaced it anyway even though they had no obligation to do so. I took in an iMac for warranty repair on a bad drive but asked for them to fix my cracked screen. They told me it would be $75 to fix the screen, but when I came to pick it up, they told me they decided to fix it for free. Sometimes you just get lucky.

  • This conformation really helped me. I was debating whether or not to bring in my MacBook Pro late 2016 for speaker repair, both speakers blew a few months ago and I’ve used external headphones etc for sound; I didn’t bring it in for 2 reasons, 1: it’s an extension of my arm and 2: I’m out of warranty and I can only imagine how much that would cost. Not to mention the butterfly keyboard issue. All of these issues would make you think I’d never buy another but it’s just so good, that’s the allure.

  • For the fellow danish audiance, “consumer law” is the english word for “reklamationsret” and is also 2 years. Not sure if it was mentioned but apple world wide warranty and apple care is covering your product in the whole world as long as there is an Apple store or a Premium reseller / service provider. Where the consumer law can only be used in the country it was purchased, so don’t go buying all your items in UK if you don’t live nearby hoping for a 6 year warranty, unless you wanna travel back to UK for the repair. At least that is my experience

  • Very informative! We are in 🇨🇦 I took my 2020 Mac book pro in the Apple Store yesterday. It has a crack on the Bezel (bottom left hand corner) it is covered under the care plan but however they are charging 129$ they are saying is not covered under warrant!!! Is this correct? Shld I be paying anything if I have the care plan? They also said the Touch ID failed I’m not understanding why because it worked fine before I left it with them! Any insight you can off would be helpful. Thank you!

  • Always been fairly pleased with apple. I had a MacBook Pro 2017 and the Touch Bar had some weird lamination defect, apple replaced without any fuss. also, back in the days of the iPhone 6, apple replaced that outside of warranty too. Good to know about these rights though. I would probably still get AppleCare for more expensive products for the accidental damage cover though.

  • This may be different in the UK but as far as I know you can’t request a refund unless it’s from the place of purchase so for example, you can’t go to Apple and ask for a refund under Consumer Law if you bought it from third party electronics store. You’d have to go to the store you purchased it from in order to claim a refund. Repairs or replacements are done at Apple if needed though and they may not exclusively mention Consumer Law but they wouldn’t charge you unnecessarily otherwise they could get sued if they breach the Consumer Law Rights, as would any company selling goods.

  • Thank you, this is so helpful! I wish I’ve known this when I found out about the defect in my iPhone 6s plus camera (as well as the battery that kept freezing and dying in France in the cold between November to April!!!). They only said the warranty already expired and wanted me to pay for it!!! It was an awful experience with Apple. My question is: Do we have to go to the store where we bought the device from? My friend is purchasing 2 devices for me from the US and I’m afraid I won’t be able to use these magic words in the future if needed! Also I didn’t know that the magic keyboard can drain the battery, you’re the first one I hear talk about it! Thanks again for the great content!

  • They still have to respect the law for you to benefit from it lol. In my country, its 2 years as well but as soon as you claim your consumer rights, they will smile, take your item for “repair”, wait 30 days (the maximum allowed by law for repairs) and return it to you with obvious water damage, claiming you did it. Happened to my sister with her phone from a major service provider. Now your only option is to take it to court, which costs money/time/mental health and most people just won’t bother. So there is that. Better be polite when claiming your rights, because it may backfire in your face even in “normal” countries like the UK. And even then, it may not work out…. People are pigs. Actually, that is offensive to the poor pigs. These laws need to be tightened even further.

  • I am having issue with my M1 iPad Pro 12.9 inch its having some screen bleeding and two dots are an appearing on screen one is little burned grey and other is just a whilte light. I don’t hv a warranty now and it seems to be a manufacturing defect. I feel hopeful now after perusal this article, let’s see what happens.

  • Another thing that works great in Portugal (probably under the Consumer Law as well) is going to an authorized Apple repair shop and saying (in case there is a defect and they refuse to repair/replace it for free) that you do not trust your Apple product and you feel endangered by its malfunction, works like a charm.

  • As an ex 🍎 employee. This is true. This is indeed only relevant if you bought your product directly from Apple. Consumer law only applies to the retailer you consumed from. Also, doesn’t count when you damaged your own machine ofc. We would actually inform customers of this right upon purchase but people basically forget 80% of the conversation lol. Basically no other retailer than the 🍎 store complied tho, resulting in a lot of people disappointed anyway. So buying directly at Apple might be a good idea anyways.

  • I had surpassingly good experiences with apple replacing my AirPods Pro multiple times now. It was first the right one that had like a static noise pop up and always be buzzing when playing bass frequencies and a few months later the left one. Each have been replaced via the send in program and I used the apple support app chat since that felt like the easiest way

  • I am currently having a problem whereby my airpod pros have started this crackling noise in the right one. I went to O2 who I am still financing them through and they have straight up refused although I have done nothing to damage them and they are one month out of warranty. So now I am paying for a broken pair of airpods that they refuse to get fixed or replaced. I am so frustrated as I do not have a great deal of money as a student and feel like paying for a new airpod whilst still paying the finance on these is just completely ridiculous. what should I do? Thank you for explaining in this article, but I feel like I need some more direct advice regarding my situation.

  • Hey, thanks for the article, I have been facing a battery issue with my macbook air m1 2020 model. This occuring from the next two weeks of purchasing the laptop. From six months onwards I have contacting the apple support and taken to service also they are saying no issue but still the issue is happening. Could you please suggest me what steps need to be taken to resolve the issue and my Mac is still in warranty

  • In Australia we have a thing in consumer law called statutory warranty. Unfortunately Apple has a tendency to disregard it which has burnt me three times – faulty 17″ PowerBook, one of those 15″ MacBook Pros with the dodgy Nvidia graphics card and most recently a USB C MacBook with a non-functional Power/USB C port. Apple has really gone down hill in terms of customer relations since Steve Jobs died.

  • FYI another thing about Consumer Law in the UK is that according to the ACT, the Consumer has to claim in the first 6 months to actually get the full 6 year coverage. If the Consumer claims the fault after 6 months, it’s up to them to prove the device came with the fault. Some sellers such as Apple and John Lewis extend this to 2 years for you to claim a fault. Just put this out there, so people don’t get shown the door.

  • I bought a refurbished 4 months ago. It had a clear screen protector I pulled it off to get a better one. At the bottom of the screen. I didn’t say anything to them . I am returning this for a repair my off and on button is stuck in. They just sent me a box for my iPad . Should I say something about the screen or should I let the.I didn’t get the extra insurance. I have to send it back tomorrow. I’m kinda panicked on what to do. How to play it .

  • if the keyboard is connected by usb then the usb a specs calls for 500 mah current limit (that is why some newer macs may complain not enough power despite devices working perfectly on other older macs) it could be possible that a surface mount tantilum capacitor has shorted or a usb pin has bent and has shorted. i know about the capacitor shorting because in a louis rossman article an array of tantilum capacitors on the backlight power rail caused the macbook’s backlight to not turn on. after desoldering the capacitors the backlight came on though was unprotected or giving off interference.

  • I already knew this, even when speaking to apple support they didn’t appear to be aware of my countries consumer laws – Britain. So had to be passed onto senior management. But it was a broken ipad after having it 7 months, and as soon as they accepted the law my replacement arrived within 24 hours of shipping it. I hope American’s have similar protections, as I know EU countries have excellent consumer laws.

  • I remember Apple called me a few years ago saying that they would like to replace for free my 2 GB iPod Nano 1st gen. They wouldn’t tell me what they’ll replace it with, (if I get their new Nano, or a similar one, which at that point was obsolete for quite a few years already), all they said is I will get a new iPod Nano. They sent me a box and I sent it in, and in return they sent a brand-new iPod Nano 6th gen 8GB. Apparently there was a battery problem with that model, and they were offering free replacements to everyone who bought that particular model.

  • @ZONEofTECH :- Hello I recently purchased I phone 13 it’s not even 60 days…my charging port damaged and I’m unable to charge via charger…..does it’s will be covered under consumer law rights…I visited apple centre they have insisted that the repair cost which is near about 30 thousand Indian rupees…can u plz help me what can be done….in this case….

  • Damn it! Thanks so much for your insight, I got a new watch replacement with limited warranty expired and no apple care, one series 6 should not have water damage right? I used these 3 words before they send my product for a repair in their notes and I refused pay the 399,00 replacement fee in case it isn’t a software issue. Again thanks a lot.

  • Norway has a similar policy. 5 years. I did get to test it out when an Ipod Touch had touch issues several times. I finally got one that worked. I would like to know if this policy stretches to battery issues. I might make a article on the topic, showing how bad it actually is while Apple still claims it’s good enough. Right before it reaches 80 percent on an iPad.

  • Here in Germany with have also a 2 Year consumer law right. But, besides that i am an apple user since Day one, i have never been refused by any Failure with apple products from apple. The Service here in Germany with my apple products (iphones and macbooks) are excellent. I have several issues with my devices and its funny because they just give you in 5min a brandnew or refurbished device after they check the devices and hear your problems. I am very happy with the service and can say that i am willing to pay more for Apple Products than for others BECAUSE of the hassle-free service. My 2018 MacBook had an Battery issue and i had a dead pixel in the center of the display… no Problem: Full Replacement of the Top and Lower Chassis. It was basicly a brandnew device for me after 2 Years of usage! I am very happy with them!

  • My i phone 13 pro screen is not working turn into white due to i deep in water for like 30 second but it can still receive call if we know the area but i send it for a check to the dealer but comes out water damage…and apple doesn’t Cover warranty if it is water damage….I’m so frustrated on this as thr previous series 11 12 12pro are all okay when we deep in water..but my 13 pro 💔….. give me some suggestions what i can do…is consumer law going to work it out for me

  • so I spoke with apple support regards my brand new 2020 Mac book air. I know its 2023 but this person never opened this laptop for years and sold me for very low price. after having for 3 days key board start to have issues. Key(s) feel “sticky” or do not respond in a consistent manner. Apple support said use device is not eligible becaz this issue was until 2019. so I got no luck that is very sad. I am addicted of apple products and love them so much but this situation really messed up with me. what should I do next? get this repair by third party?

  • This is a very old article but I just recently bought a 15 pro max alongside an apple watch through SKY not Apple, which I’m paying monthly for 3 years, I was curious about apple care but it seems meh, my question is, could I use consumer law rights on both devices separately for (touch wood) any issues that occur after my 1 year warranty and is consumer law rights a one time deal? I am only 7 mins in but I was just thinking, if I get a reply I thank you

  • Here’s an easier way. Ask for a CS Code. A CS Code (or customer satisfaction code) is a number that Apple uses to bill the repair to Apple instead of the user when there is no warranty on the device. You can call apple and say “the apple store told me to call you and get a cs code” and usually they cave pretty quickly.

  • I’ve been facing network connection error on updating software version. And tbis has happened 4th fime. I’ve submitted my iPhone to the service center for 4th time. Neither they repair it or replace it. Everytime they just troubleshoot and restore my iPhone and give it back to me. How to take legal action against them?

  • Good luck trying! I bought a MacBook Pro 2 years and 1 month ago, now there’s Verticle lines down the screen and horizontal line flickering. Brought it to Apple and they wouldn’t replace it, said there was also no signs that it had been dropped or that there was liquid damage so it is there problem. Got it independently checked and even then they wouldn’t replace the screen. Now have to pay £520 to get an £1900 laptop screen repaired… the consumer rights law won’t always work

  • But I think this only applies to NEW products with the original owner (and receipt) and will not apply to the UK secondhand shops or secondhand sales (even with the original receipt changing hands). But I also believe that if for example here in the UK we had Maplin a few years back go out of business and in cases like that it then becomes the responsibility of the manufacturer

  • Hi! A question, so I have a similar issue with my iPhone as the battery health has fluctuated a lot (went down 2% in first two weeks) and again in the pasts month. Should I contact apple support through their app and mention consumer law rights? I’m not too close to an apple store so it would be a pain to travel just to organise another time for repair. Thanks anyway great article

  • Hello! I have one iPhone 12 Pro max bought 13/11/20 and after one year my battery health is 85% with 277 battery cycles. I reported the sudden drop of battery health after 14.5 update. They did all of diagnostics and said the battery is good without issues but the truth is that week by week, I’m losing 1% battery health. The last time I was at Apple Regent Street, I invoked my consumer law rights but they told me that wasn’t do anything because the battery passed the tests. Now, I avoid to give an intensive use during the day with afraid to damage the battery even more.

  • Many thanks for this article. I called Apple yesterday as my AirPods Pro have stopped working. They mentioned Consumer Rights Law to ME! I didn’t know about it. They’ve offered to repair or replace them free of charge. That’s what I call service. My iPad Pro has a major battery issue and only lasts two hours before needing to be charged again. Think I’ll mention Consumer Rights with the iPad too.

  • Tried this today after having my iPhone 14 pro max damaged. Screen went completely white and kept glitching. Didn’t have any insurance on it since I’m usually really careful about my things…..no apple care at all either. Within 10min I was out with a brand new phone. You are the fucking man I appreciate the article my guy 🍻🍻🍻

  • Apple refused to replace magnetic leather link band (leather layers begun separating/pealing off) saying – this specific part of band is not covered by AppleCare+ warranty. In reality they do not care about any “consumer law rights”, their statement was – in USA it is applied in state of Maine only. Loyal customer, have spent 10k over last years on Apple products – we do not care 🙂

  • Wonder how this works in the US? My iPad Pro 12.9″ ‘20 has the pencil noise issue. I’m on my fourth unit. Have apple care but they have been stubborn admitting there is a product flaw. Would like my money back. Only thing that works is a glass screen protector. My old 9.7″ Pro never had that problem. Plus the Magic keyboard drains the battery more quickly than expected. Like the unit but it definitely has some design issues.

  • What about in Asia Pacific countries? Specifically Philippines? I’m having difficulty getting my MacBook air 2020 be repaired or replaced and it is still under warranty as it is under me for just 6months but unfortunately a tiny crack on the right hand upper corner of the monitor appeared and it gave the screen a pixelated line. I did not cause the crack as it is always inside its protective bag after i use it. Hope somebody can help me out. Thank you…

  • i just woke up this morning to find my macbook pro with a cracked chin alongside the dead and exploded pixels that were already there. it’s only been 14 months since this part of the laptop was replaced under warranty. gonna have to pull this card to get it repaired again. am i just unlucky or has apple’s build quality gotten worse recently?

  • Anyone who has some knowledge in economics know what this eventually means is, with little competition in the tech industry, Apple could just shift all these additional costs from “consumer rights law” to their new products. So sure you get “free” repairs and refunds, but in the beginning you bought your Apple products, you’re actually paying for it already. LOL. That’s why electronics in the U.K. are at least 20% more expensive than other places in the world without such laws, for example Hong Kong. What you need is more competition in the space. Competition is the only way to combat bad behaviour on both sides of demand and supply.

  • Here in Quebec Canada we have what is called a legal warranty. In essence, say after the Mac Pro 1 year Apple warranty expires, the logic board died. Under the legal warranty, Apple has to replace it free of charge. The warranty stipulates that the item must be free of problem for a reasonable amount of time. So it stands that a 8000$ machine should be working at least after 5 years. For a 50$ item, the law would be less accommodating naturally. The kicker here is Apple, by Quebec law, must inform you of the legal warranty BEFORE selling you AppleCare. This goes for all merchants who try to sell you extended warranties.

  • I have a US iPhone 11 and it’s screen was separated. My warranty finished in January and I saw the defect in February. I went to Apple as soon as I saw it, and I was told that I had to pay upfront the cost of repair which was a large amount. I was really upset then one of the workers asked me if my device is covered by the Australian consumer law. I wasn’t sure then they saw that it was a phone purchased in the US, so it was not covered 🙁 I was surprised that they mentioned it!

  • Sir I am from India I bought a MacBook air m1 2020 last yr after that 1yr I just off my MacBook for 5 days after 5 days when I try to on it its not powering on and I give to icare they told me they will check the Mac what happened and after some days the call me and told the logic board have been replaced and now also it’s not working then they told me now the problem with a cable and the changed the cable to the display after that also its not working and the next problem with the camera then they change the display and the camera after that also the camera its not working When I call the support team they are telling wait we will solve the all problems From your side is there any solution for this

  • What about the US version? I know several laws were changed but I just learned about this Consumer Law Rights from the UK, I know nothing about a US equivalent. As I’m planning on switching from Android to iPhone and iPad. As I’m sick and tired of the BS of planned obsolescence and updates slowing my phone down.

  • I had an awful experience with Apple, in – warranty logic board failure, they tried to repair it for a week but couldn’t and damaged the screen in transit. Agreed to repair damage but then couldn’t source the parts for 2 weeks, submitted complaint and executive relations took another 2 weeks to look into it. Refused to replace and said I had to keep waiting for a repair with no ETA, told me that discussing my complaint was a “pointless conversation”. Then I randomly get a call from the Apple Store that they will replace my machine with no explanation after waiting almost 2 months.

  • I just left the Apple store, (after chats and calls and a previous visit). They said that the can replace the faulty product because I didn’t make any claim in the two years from the purchase. I’m confused. If the product doesn’t work on the third year (because faulty) I can not claim my rights? Does anyone know if this is legit?

  • I wish I knew it applied for 6 years when my Surface Pro’s kickstand broke after 7 months. I was aware of these laws but thought they only applied for 6 months, and the Microsoft store at Oxford Circus seemed like it would not honour the 1 year warranty. Also when my then 3 year old Sony Xperia XZ Premium just stopped charging at all.

  • I bought a new MacBook Pro 14 inch in March and I paid £2000 as I’ve got the upgraded one terabyte storage. Just over a week ago the laptop crashed wouldn’t turn on and the Apple Store can’t fix it so they sent it back to the repair centre and it’s been over a week and Apple has not updated me and has not given me a replacement laptop

  • When the iPad Pros first launched, I noticed the Pencil 2 I bought had a little black dot on the side. At first I ignored it, thinking it was dirt, but then noticed it could not be cleaned off and was always smearing some black substance around the dot. So when I moved to NYC, I took it to the Apple store and asked for a replacement. Their reply, as usual, was that the warranty had run out and they can’t replace it. I told them this was a manufacturing defect and not about the warranty, still I got this blank face from the salesperson. Finally I said loudly, you are required by LAW to replace a defective product! And within five minutes I got the replacement lol. Geez man never back down when Apple doesn’t want to replace a defective product, keep going at them until they do!

  • This is literally my Most expensive Father’s Day gift. He’s going to freak out. He’s an architect set to retire in 8-10 years. Dudes been rocking a 6th gen with the old pencil. Now it’s all updated 11inch pro, magic key and the pencil pro! All still in the their respective boxes. Thanks for your help in making me a bit broke 🤣 looking forward to seeing pops lose his marbles trying to figure out Apple intelligence. TREAT YO DAD!!!!!

  • I just upgraded to a 13″ M4 and this is my first Magic Keyboard. I specifically went to the Apple Store to try the new model out before making a decision. I have the Logitech keyboard combo on my old M1 and liked it, but the Magic Keyboard is definitely a better typing experience and feels more ‘solid’. The connection for the Logitech keyboard is kinda flimsy and results in the keyboard shifting when using in my lap. I did like that it has a case for the iPad, which the Magic Keyboard does not. I figured I’d try it out for the 2 week return period and I quickly decided that I really like it and use it way more than I thought it would or than I did with the Logitech. The price is ridiculous, but it really is a nice piece of kit. I’m pretty sure I’m going to keep it at this point, but recommend if anyone is on the fence, you have two weeks to return with no questions from Apple, so try it out and return if you really don’t like it or can’t justify it.

  • Far and away, the best, most honest review of the Magic Keyboard so far! I subscribed. I really can’t grok how in beta, Apple’s designers didn’t notice the top-heavy, falling backwards when mounting the iPad, and concluded, “That’s good enough for a $300+ release anyway.” Did they even test it with an M4 iPad mounted? For me, it’s a dealbreaker. With each release, Apple makes their iPads more “laptop-like.” How could they not consider how it works in your “lap?”

  • Regarding the accuracy of the trackpad I think you’re referring to the trackpad inertia. When you move the mouse on a Mac it stops immediately when you stop. On an iPad it continues moving for a bit. If you go into system settings and search for inertia you can toggle this off so that it acts like a Mac cursor.

  • I have the one for the 11 inch iPad Pro. I really like it after using it for a few days, but still a little bit concerned if the aluminum or something on it like dust will scratch the screen. The rubber around the keyboard does not really prevent the display glass to touch the aluminum in the trackpad area… The glass really touches the surface. At the moment it seems we have no keyboard gate and I really hope it stays like that.

  • I’m a big fan of the separated external BT keyboard and ipad on stand: For one, it’s more ergonomic to have the iPad a bit higher and a bit behind the keyboard. Also, it’s way more affordable than the Apple Magic Keyboard: there are lots of affordable BT keyboards that a great typing experience, backlit keys, and a rock solid connection to the iPad. There are lots of very affordable stands, including portable ones. The keyboard and portalbe stand I purchased together weigh slightly less than the new Magic Keyboard. The stand folds nearly flat and both fit quite easily in my bag along with my M4 iPP. My total cost was around $125 for the stand & keyboard. What I give up with this combo is the cool factor of the Apple Magic Keyboard and the convenience of having everything in one slim package. Only you can decide if those things are important enough to spend more than double. But for me, the ergonomics are the deciding factor. My workdays include many hours sitting at a desk. Tipping my head down to look at an iPad screen that is low and right next to my hands when typing isn’t comfortable after a half hour or so. So I’m happy to pass on the Apple Magic Keyboard. But I know it’ll be a great option for many. It’s very well-made, it “just works,” (and works really well), and you get the convenience and cool factor, both of which are worth paying money for.

  • I got my new iPad Pro 4 a few days ago. I’m glad I splurged for the magic keyboard. I had a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard. It was OK, but the magic keyboard is better in so many little ways. I typically use my tablet while laying on my back, with the keyboard sitting between my stomach and chest. It is a little wobbly, but not too bad. On the rare occasions I use it in my lap, I will need to prop it up with something near the front. maybe some third-party will come up with gizmo that stays attached to the bottom of the keyboard just for that purpose – maybe 1 inch rubber wedge or something.

  • Just like @DjangoGreen, I wanted a tablet due to the benefits tablets have over laptops (iPADOS, touch screen, lightweight, ability to work while holding the device with one hand etc.). I’ve never had any desire to try and make my tablet a laptop. Dictation and the on screen keyboard, is good enough for me when away from home. A bluetooth keyboard (MX Keys Mini) and mouse (MX 3) sits on the desk at home for heavy duty work. Enjoyed the article! 👍🙏

  • I picked up my first magic keyboard with my 2020 iPad Pro, just a few months after I purchased my 2020 MacBook Pro for $2000. Let’s just say that the MacBook Pro has less than 100 battery cycles in 2024. I now have a 2023 iPad Pro with magic keyboard and it’s pretty much all I use. I only pull out the MacBook Pro for certain things when absolutely necessary. I run my business on the iPad Pro, and now I do most of my recording in pro logic and article work in Final Cut Pro on the iPad.. and I do own Logic Pro on desktop. I really think iPads are the future. I only wish they would come up with a hybrid OS to be more compatible with some websites..

  • I got a Magic Keyboard today. I had a couple other versions made by other manufacturers. The apple keyboard is 1000 times better. The others are cheap feeling. Also… the “when you touch the screen it falls over” is exaggerated. Majorly exaggerated. I am keeping the apple Magic Keyboard. It’s fantastic.

  • I went to buy the M4 13 iPad… and I ended up leaving. I will be buying the M2 iPad 12.9 SOLELY because of the Magic Keyboard… (I had the M1 until it got stolen) What you complained about the tipping… well, the old design was infinitely better for that weight distribution. Also, the suggestions on the lower part of the touch screen of the iPad are a lot easier to tap with your fingertips without even moving your hands from the keyboard, again, with the older Magic Keyboard. I just cannot understand why would Apple have made it all worse with this new design.
