How old is the tarot?

Tarot decks were invented in Italy in the 1430s, adding a fifth suit of 21 specially illustrated cards called trionfi (“triumphs”) and an odd card called il matto (“the fool”). These cards bore Italian suitmarks and belonged to an experimental period of card design when queens were often added to the series of court cards previously consisting of only a king and two male figures. In standard cards, the four figures were subsequently reduced to three again by suppressing the queen, except in French cards, which suppressed the cavalier (knight).

The trionfi each bore a different allegorical illustration instead of a common suitmark, possibly representing characters in medieval reenactments of Roman triumphal processions. They were originally unnumbered, so it was necessary to remember their order. When added to the pack, trionfi functioned as a suit superior in power to the other four, acting as a suit of triumphs or “trumps”.

Can I tarot myself?

Tarot readings can be done by beginners, providing insight into current situations, honoring intuition, and forecasting potential outcomes. To begin, clean the energy of your space by burning herbs, ringing bells or chimes, taking a bath, or using crystals. A Selenite wand is a popular energy refresher that aids clarity.

Sit comfortably and close your eyes, focusing on the protective energy surrounding you. Take deep breaths, think about your question or needing guidance, and keep your mind and heart open to the answers that may come through the cards. Shuffle the deck, focusing on your desired query, and shuffle the cards in front of you. The pattern laid out is called a “spread”, and the meaning of each card in combinations builds up to the overall answer to your query.

Before beginning to shuffle, know which spread you will be working with. As answers come through, it’s important to draw additional cards for further clarity or start with a new question from a different perspective. Tarot readings can be a powerful tool for personal growth and understanding.

Where are tarot cards from?

In English-speaking countries, cartomantic tarot cards are available for novelty and divination. Early French occultists claimed tarot cards had esoteric links to ancient Egypt, Kabbalah, the Indic Tantra, or I Ching. However, scholarly research shows that tarot cards were invented in northern Italy in the mid-15th century and no significant use of tarot cards for divination until the late 18th century. Historians describe western views of the Tarot pack as a “successful propaganda campaign”.

The earliest evidence of a tarot deck used for cartomancy comes from an anonymous manuscript from around 1750. The popularization of esoteric tarot started with Antoine Court and Jean-Baptiste Alliette (Etteilla) in Paris during the 1780s, using the Tarot of Marseilles. French tarot players abandoned the Marseilles tarot in favor of the Tarot Nouveau around 1900, and the Marseilles pattern is now mostly used by cartomancers. Etteilla was the first to produce a bespoke tarot deck specifically designed for occult purposes around 1789, containing themes related to ancient Egypt.

Is it safe to read tarot cards?

Tarot cards, like other metaphysical tools, are as safe or dangerous as the messages they deliver. They provide clues into the subconscious and are not harmful themselves. The Tarot is often linked to witchcraft, as many practicing witches use it. However, not all witches use the Tarot. The Tarot is a divination tool used by witches to derive more symbolism and understanding for specific questions. • Fabulous vid ! Number 3 for me 💜🙏 and your Empress card has cleared up a mystery for me ! Have lately been pondering on what image design to use on my new business cards. A week ago I had a strong image come into my head just as was falling asleep…a great pillar of light & colour in the centre, flanked by 2 opposite facing crescent – type shapes. I drew it out but was puzzled by the 2 shapes. The pillar makes sense due to the type of healing practice. Now I know ! Thanks to you….& it also makes sense. 🌸🌱🙏

  • Love the beginning of your article. Wow that was a beautiful drive, love the 💐. I will have to send you pictures of the almond trees blooming. Then when the blooms fall it looks like snow. I picked the first card and third one. Beautiful deck of cards. The Queens dress looked like water flowing from her to bring everything to life at her feet. I thought that was beautiful, the new life or regeneration of it. Thank you Andy for sharing your gift with us. Sending lots of love, light and hugs. Many blessings to you 🙏. Stay safe 🙏❤.

  • Beautiful Village! I can’t believe all the green there. We still have a lot of snow on the ground here and it’s cloudy and gray. I picked 2 Princess of swords. Swords seems to be following me around lately. I think I could talk to you for hours about the state of the world. I see so much going on but it becomes too overwhelming so I tune it out. I do think we’re at the end of all this craziness though. Love and light 😊

  • Hi Andy. You have a couple of beautiful hens. Is the one in the back a silver laced wyandotte? How many chickens do you have? I have a hard time picking just one card on the pick a cards, so I try to take a little from all of them. As far as the number 13, it’s always been my lucky number considering I’m was born on the 13th.

  • Sorry Andy but Asda is no longer owned by Walmart🤦‍♀️ but it is owned by the Billionaire Issa brothers. I’m surprised you didn’t know this from the news last year. Asda had been in turmoil for sometime with various bids of unsuccessful takeovers, they employs over 146,000 people and of course the new owner have understandably have had to make some changes as they have taken on billions of pounds of debt. i say the empolyees are very lucky, if the previous takeover was successful, then was more staff would have lost their jobs! Not just 3000 people, like you say, if you are in any doubt with what I say, then please double check the information on the internet. 🤷‍♀️
